Kangana Ranaut post row costs Supriya Shrinate a Congress seat in Lok Sabha elections 2024

Supriya Shrinate, the digital media chief of Congress, has been dropped as candidate in Lok Sabha elections days after being slammed for a derogatory post against BJP candidate and Bollywood actress Kangana Renaut.

Shrinate's name was not included in the eight list of party candidatesafter she made the controversial postwhich led to a political uproar.

In the 2019 elections, Shrinate unsuccessfully fought in the Maharajganj seat in Uttar Pradesh. However, this time around, her name was nowhere on the Congress party's list for the Lok Sabha election.

Incidentally, Maharajganj is near Rae Bareilly, the pocket burrow constituency of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, which she will not contest this time around.

Virendra Chaudhary has been fielded from Maharajganj seat by the Congress this year.

Supriya Shrinate-Kangana Ranaut controversy

Supriya Shrinate allegedly posted an offensive comment against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mandi candidate Kangana Ranaut and later deleted the post.

She initially claimed that someone with access to her Instagram account had made the post.

After a political furor erupted, she posted on social media: "Anyone who knows me will know I would never say that for a woman. However, a parody account that I have just discovered misusing my name is being run on Twitter ( @Supriyaparody ) which started the whole mischief, and is being reported."

Ranaut said that the post was hurtful to her. Speaking to ANI news agency, the actress said, "Every woman deserves dignity, no matter what profession she is in...The most I am hurt by is the 'Mandi' thing, which is known as Chota Kashi and has been the land of several Rishis".

Taking to X, Ranaut posted, "Dear Supriya ji, in the last 20 years of my career as an artist, I have played all kinds of women. From a naive girl in Queen to a seductive spy in Dhaakad, from a goddess in Manikarnika to a demon in Chandramukhi, from a prostitute in Rajjo to a revolutionary leader in Thalaivii".

Congress leader Sandeep Dixit concurred that such language and remarks have no place in the political battle and said that Supriya Shrinate has given clarification for the position.

The Election Commission, meanwhile, issued show-cause notices to Supriya Shrinate and asked her to respond by March 29.

The poll panel stated that the remark was violative of the Model Code of Conduct.
