A new genetic study has clarified how spectacled cobras (Naja naja), one of India's "big four" snakes responsible for most serious snakebite cases, are related across South Asia. The findings were published in Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. The spectacled cobra is currently treated as a single species found across much of South Asia, with regional variation in colour, hood markings and venom. Early classifications split it into regional subspecies, but later work grouped them together. A 2022 study proposed that Sri Lankan cobras be recognised as a separate species. A subsequent reassessment challenged that conclusion, citing its reliance on mitochondrial markers, limited geographic sampling and use of venom as taxonomic evidence. The new study's authors note that earlier molecular work drew mostly on samples from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with minimal representation from India, partly because of difficulties in obtaining research permits and samples. Before this study, only 23 N. naja sequences had been generated. Also read: India tops list of most snake attacks in the world with 1.3mn cases every year, study finds The team sequenced nine DNA markers, both mitochondrial and nuclear, from scale samples of 67 cobras collected across major Indian regions. The researchers say this is consistent with widespread genetic mixing, despite visible differences in appearance and venom. This contrasts with other widespread snakes, such as the banded krait and king cobra, and with related cobra species, which show pronounced geographic clustering. The Sri Lankan cobras, however, formed a distinct genetic lineage, showing moderate mitochondrial divergence from the mainland population. The researchers link this to tectonic connectivity between the African and Arabian plates, aridification, and the expansion of savanna and grasslands. They note that Naja fossils have not been found in the Arabian Peninsula, which may reflect uneven sampling. The lineage that reached the subcontinent likely evolved into N. naja. The data suggest it reached Sri Lanka around two million years ago, in the early Pleistocene, when lower sea levels created land connections. Rising seas later isolated the island population, allowing a separate lineage to form, while mixing continued on the mainland.

It was earlier believed by scientists that Elapoidea - which is the superfamily of cobras, coral snakes and mambas - first existed in Africa.

However, the hypothesis was proved wrong when scientists discovered the fossil of a file snake in Tanzania which belonged to the Oligocene Epoch (33.9 million to 23 million years ago).

The snake was found to be the oldest relative which belongs to the Elapoidea group as per the fossil record.

In the new research, which was published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the researchers carried out the fossils and genetic analysis of snakes from other regions to discover that these snakes along with snakes from the superfamily Colubroidea originated in Asia.

"The reason for the uncertainty was mostly because of the lack of understanding of how these different species are related to one another," said lead author Jeffrey Weinell, who is an evolutionary biologist and postdoctoral fellow at the American Museum of Natural History, while speaking to Live Science.

How did scientists carry out the research?

The comprehensive genetic data related to the group was never compiled by scientists.

"I was interested in inferring the tree of life for this group, which predicts the evolutionary relationships, and then using that tree of life estimate plus information about modern species to estimate where the ancestor of this group lived," he said.

In the latest study, Weinell and his colleagues looked into 3,128 locations on the genomes of 65 species of Elapoidea to understand how all the snakes were related.

In the earlier fossil record, these Asian ancestors were not mentioned probably because of the conditions in which they evolved.

A deadly cobra was found slithering in a plane's cockpit at 11,000ft in the air. South African pilot Rudolph Erasmus held his nerves & made an emergency landing. 'You could hear a needle drop and i think everyone froze for a moment or two,' he said.

Pilot shares 'snakes on a plane' moment

A deadly cobra was found slithering in a plane's cockpit by South African pilot Rudolph Erasmus at 11,000ft in the air.

The scary co-passenger was slithering under the pilot's seat. "To be truly honest, it's as if my brain did not register what was going on. It was a moment of [...] awe," Erasmus said, adding that he initially mistook the cold feeling on his back as his water bottle.

"I felt this cool sensation, sort of, crawling up my shirt," he stated, believing that he did not close the bottle properly and hence, the water is dripping down his back.

"As I turned to the left and looked down I saw the cobra [...] receding its head backwards underneath the seat,” he said.

The pilot had to make an emergency landing. The flight had departed from Bloemfontein and was destined for Pretoria. The private plane, Beechcraft Baron 58, had four passengers onboard along with the snake.

Erasmus said that Cape cobra's single bite is lethal and can lead to the victim's death in 30 minutes, hence to avoid any panic, he carefully thought before telling passengers calmly about the unwanted co-passenger on board.

Erasmus was also "so scared the snake might have gone to the back and cause mass panic". Thinking thoroughly, he decided to inform the passengers.

"I did inform the passengers: 'Listen the snake is inside the aircraft, it's underneath my seat, so let's try and get down to the ground as soon as we can',” he said to the passengers.

Describing about the scary announcement made to the passengers, Erasmus said that there was an absolute moment of silence: "You could hear a needle drop and I think everyone froze for a moment or two,” he said.

Pilots receive training for dealing with various scenarios, but certainly not for handling snakes in the cockpit, Erasmus said, adding that panicking would have made the situation much worse.

The plane's emergency landing was made in the city of Welkom. The presence of a snake, however, was not a total surprise. Two employees working at Worcester flying club, from where the plane first took off, said that they had seen the reptile enter the aircraft and had tried to "grab" it, but in vain.

Erasmus said that he had also tried finding the snake before boarding the aircraft along with the passengers, but "unfortunately it was not there, so we all then safely assumed that it must have crawled out overnight or earlier that morning, which was on Monday".

However, the pilot refused to accept that he did anything special. "I think that's a bit blown up if I can be direct. It's also my passengers that remained calm as well,” he said.

Snake scare! Pilot finds deadly cobra in cockpit, makes emergency landing

How much can a person take? Apparently, a lot!

A charity worker from Britain in India went through a lot. After surviving COVID-19, dengue, and malaria, Ian Jones did not expect any more hurdles. But then, he was bit by a deadly snake in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

An Indian cobra bit Jones in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, after which he underwent treatment at a hospital in Jodhpur city, which is 350 kms away from the state capital Jaipur.

Initially, doctors suspected that he was also carrying COVID-19, for which he later tested negative.

"Jones came to us last week after a snake bite in a village in the region. Initially it was suspected that he is also Covid-19 positive (for the second time) but he tested negative for that," doctor Abhishek Tater, who treated him at the local Medipulse Hospital, told AFP on November 21.

The doctor spoke about the symptoms exhibited by Jones after the snake bite. "While with us, he was conscious and had snake bite symptoms including blurring of vision and difficulty to walk, but these are generally transient symptoms," Tater added.

He was discharged soon after, and the doctor believes there won’t be any “long term effects”.

“If he hasn't already improved, he'd do so within next few days," the doctor told AFP further. Additionally, the doctor pointed out how common snake bites are in rural parts of the region.

His son, Seb Jones has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for medical bills, and to facilitate his travel back to England.

On the page, his son’s statement read as follows: "Dad is a fighter, during his time out in India he had already suffered from malaria and dengue fever before Covid-19”.
