With a limited number of films set for a theatrical release amid the pandemic, famous franchise ‘Lord of the Rings’ is bringing its trilogy to boost cinema sales. The films will now re-release in Chinese theatres throughout April in restored 4K, Imax and 3D versions. This comes just in time for the 20th anniversary of the first movie from the franchise’s Chinese debut.

The re-runs of the trilogy come just after James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ returned to Chinese screens and snatched back its number 1 position from Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to become the highest-grossing film in movie history.

Interestingly, this has happened without any promotions to back ‘Avatar’ and goes on to what kind of an impact the film has had on our minds.

Meanwhile, as for news of ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ is scheduled to release on April 4, ‘The Two Towers’ on April 16 and ‘The Return of the King’ on April 23.

Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy debuted in China at a time when the country had far fewer screens and thus a much smaller box office. ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ hit the country in April 2002, grossing $6.88 million, while ‘The Two Towers’ earned only $3 million. In 2004, ‘Return of the King’ earned $10.4 million.

Chinese researchers have developed a technology that they claim could see an object hidden over a kilometre far.

The scientists say that non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging could be used for everything from policing to defence, reports SCMP.

According to the research paper published earlier this month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers at the University of Science and Technology set up a laster emitter
at their campus in Urban Shanghai and hid a mannequin behind a flat-screen inside a flat 1.43 km away.

A pulse laser was thrown onto a wall inside the flat, which scattered the light in different directions.

Some of the photons were reflected on to the mannequin, while others travelled to a sensor placed next to the laser emitter.

The photons that struck the hidden object were then reflected back onto the wall and bounced back a third time to hit the sensor.

The researchers then calculated how far each part of the mannequin was placed and recreate a three-dimensional image through an algorithm.

"This range is about three orders of magnitude longer than previous experiments," the scientists said in the article.

"The results will open avenues for the development of NLOS imaging techniques and relevant applications to real-world conditions."

Less than three million foreign tourists visited India in 2020, a dip of around 75 per cent as compared to the previous year, due to travel restrictions imposed to control the coronavirus pandemic, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday.

Tourism Minister Prahlad Patel said that while in 2019, the number of foreign tourist arrivals was 10.93 million, the number stood at 10.56 million in 2018.

It was in 2017 that foreign tourist arrivals crossed the 10 million mark.

There were 10.4 million arrivals in that year, he said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

Last year, foreign tourist arrivals stood at 2.68 million and "no formal study has been instituted for assessment of loss of revenue in 2020", Patel said.

"However, several rounds of discussions and brainstorming sessions with industry stakeholders indicate massive loss of revenue, foreign exchange and jobs. Because of the highly unorganised nature of the sector, the impact in numerical terms can only be ascertained in due course," the minister said.

"To incentivize stakeholders in the tourism industry, the guidelines for the scheme of Market Development Assistance (MDA) for providing financial support to stakeholders for the promotion of domestic tourism have been modified to enhance the scope and reach of the scheme, to provide maximum benefits to the stakeholders," Patel told the House.

Besides, promotional activities have been incorporated including online promotions and the extent of financial assistance permissible has been enhanced, he said.

Tourism departments of states and union territories are also now eligible for obtaining financial support under the scheme, Patel said.

European Union on Wednesday called for release of dozens of opposition figures in Hong Kong. The EU also said that it was eyeing imposing more sanctions on China over its crackdown on pro-democracy activists, leaders and businessmen.

"We are currently analysing the situation to see how we might need to react. There are other possibilities open to us, sanctions for example," European Commission spokesman Peter Stano told journalists.

He said that the sanctions if imposed, will have to be unanimously agreed by EU's 27 member states. The states had come together in July 2019 to slap sanctions on China when it passed the controversial National Security Law. The law was invoked by China to stamp out dissent in Hong Kong.

EU threatens China of more sanctions, wants Hong Kong opposition figures released

The amendments are aimed to strengthen the military leadership under Chinese President Xi Jinping. Also, it will provide it with the means to respond to the conflicts between China and the United States.

China amends defence law to strengthen military powers

China has revised its National Defence Law, expanding the power of its armed forces headed by President Xi Jinping to mobilise military and civilian resources to defend its national interests both at home and abroad.

The new law, effective from January 1, weakens the role of the State Council, China's Cabinet headed by Premier Li Keqiang, in formulating military policy, handing decision-making powers to the Central Military Commission (CMC), the overall high-command of the two million-strong People's Liberation Army (PLA) headed by Xi, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on Sunday.

Xi, 67, has emerged as the Communist Party of China's (CPC) most powerful leader after its founder Mao Zedong, holding the posts of CPC General Secretary, head of the military besides the Presidency with prospects of a life-long tenure.

He is the only civilian leader in the CMC, packed with high-ranking military officials. The amendments for the National Defence Law (NDL) were passed by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on December 26 last year.

The revised law came into force after the key conclave of the ruling CPC in November last year finalised plans to build a fully modern military on par with the US by 2027.
By the year 2027, which marks the centennial of the founding of the PLA, China will build a fully modern military, a goal that is in alignment with the national strength and will fulfil the future national defence need, official media reports earlier said.

The revised law specifically stresses the need to build a nationwide coordination mechanism for the mobilisation of state-owned and private enterprises to take part in research into new defence technologies covering conventional weapons, as well as the non-traditional domains of cybersecurity, space and electromagnetics.

Military and political analysts said the new NDL aimed to strengthen the country's military leadership under Xi, providing it with the legal grounds to respond to the challenges of accelerating confrontations between China and the US.

Deng Yuwen, a former deputy editor of the Communist Party publication Study Times, said the amendments aimed to legalise and formally apply the ?special? nature of China's political and defence system when dealing with situations that could harm the regime at home and abroad.

"China's political nature is very different from many countries...It's not surprising for Beijing to enhance the leadership of the CMC when the PLA is going out to defend China's national interests across the world," Deng told the Post.

Chen Daoyin, a former professor of Political Science and Law at the Shanghai University, said the changes showed the regime had gained the confidence to legitimise its long-standing principle that ?the party commands the gun? and stamp its ?absolute leadership over-armed and reserved forces?.

"The move to include 'development interests' as a reason for armed mobilisation and war in the law would provide legal grounds for the country to launch a war in the legitimate name of defending national development interests," Chen said.

Zeng Zhiping, a military law expert at Soochow University said one of the big changes of the law was the downgrading of the State Council's role in formulating the principles of China's national defence, and the right to direct and administer the mobilisation of its armed forces.

"The CMC is now formally in charge of making national defence policy and principles, while the State Council becomes a mere implementing agency to provide support to the military," Zeng, who is a retired PLA lieutenant colonel, said.

"It's a big contrast when compared with developed countries like Israel, Germany and France, which prefer to put their armed forces under civilian leadership. Even in the US, the civilian-led defence ministry plays a more important role than their military top brass, the Joint Chiefs of Staff," he said.
