Pakistan's pollution crisis is worsening by the hour. So much so that toxic smog blanketing skies is now visible from space. Satellite imagery from NASA's worldview shows a vast, grey smog cloud stretching over Pakistan's Punjab province. According to health officials, 40,000 have sought treatment for respiratory issues. Moreover, UN has said the pollution crisis has its devastating impact on children and pregnant women. Watch this video to find out more.

Recently, South Africa has taken steps that could lead to the creation of "designer babies." While this term may sound unusual, it reflects a significant advancement in genetic science. In May, South Africa announced a revision to its national health research guidelines. This change has the potential to make the country the first to endorse genome editing for the creation of genetically modified children. This development could represent a major breakthrough in genetic modification. However, editing human genes that can be inherited has always been a controversial topic. Many people are concerned about the social implications and the risks involved.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu once again brought up the issue of the ageing population in the region and appealed to people to have more children.&nbsp;

“We are thinking of incentivising families with more kids, encouraging couples to have more children. We will bring in a new law to make only those with more than two children eligible to contest,’’ said Naidu on Saturday (Oct 19).

The policy, in effect for decades, has led to a demographic imbalance that threatens future growth, prompting concerns about the sustainability of China's development and the well-being of its elderly citizens.

A father who fled with his three children in late 2021 has been seen for the first time in nearly three years along the west coast of New Zealand's North Island.&nbsp;

<h2>Disappearance in 2021</h2>

Tom Phillips, along with his children Ember (now 8), Maverick (now 9), and Jayda (now 11), disappeared just before Christmas 2021. The father took the children into the Waikato wilderness following a disagreement with their mother. Since then, there have been numerous unverified sightings of Phillips, but none that included his children.

<h2>Recent footage</h2>

On October 3, 2024, new footage showed Phillips with the three children walking through farmland in Marokopa, New Zealand. The group, dressed in camouflage gear and carrying large backpacks, was spotted by pig hunters in the area. The footage reignited the search for the family, with authorities treating this sighting as "credible."

<h2>Reactions from family</h2>

The children’s mother, who last saw them in 2021, expressed relief upon seeing the footage. She told the New Zealand Herald, “I’m so happy that they’re all there,” adding that she instantly recognised each child. “I’m so relieved to see all three of my babies. They’re all alive.”

Phillips’ mother, Julia, also shared her joy at seeing her grandchildren. “We were relieved to see the children alive and well. We thought they would be but you never know,” she told the New Zealand Herald. She also expressed a desire for the children to come home.

<h2>Previous disappearance and ongoing search</h2>

Phillips and his children were first reported missing on September 11, 2021. A large search operation involving police, emergency services, and volunteers occurred for days. Nineteen days later, Phillips and the children returned to his parents' home, claiming they had been on an extended camping trip. Phillips was subsequently charged with wasting police time and resources.

However, nearly three months later the family went missing once again. When Phillips failed to appear in court, a warrant was issued for his arrest.&nbsp;

Now, with this new sighting, authorities are once again on the lookout for Phillips and the children, hoping to bring them home safely.

Fugitive father with three children spotted nearly three years after going missing

“Home is what you take with you, not what you leave behind” - N.K. Jemisin

It's a balmy Sunday afternoon and India's capital city is waking up to a less chaotic weekend with some planning to queue outside barbeques and others teaming up to visit some of the postcard places.&nbsp;

In the upscale neighbourhoods of South Delhi stands the dream college of engineers, IIT Delhi, famous for churning out the best of the best graduates for the industry.&nbsp;

It&nbsp;was a special day for the institute, as it is trying to put on a vibrant display of cultural diversity and resilience through its festival Rendezvous 2024.

Amidst the hustle-bustle and last-minute preparations before the show, three teenage girls - Aarti Bhil, Ajni Bhil, and Reshma Bhil - stand in a corner of the dark backstage - a little jittery but brimming with confidence to showcase the skills they have nurtured through the last few years.&nbsp;

For them, it is a momentous occasion, which will not just carve their future but will also substantiate the harsh decision of their families to leave a land which they once called "home".

Home - the word appears very familiar to a lot of people yet it may feel distant or hold a different meaning to some lives that&nbsp;are torn apart in the politics of the powerful.&nbsp;

Riots, political upheavals, natural calamities, coups, religious divides, conflict over land and the worst being the partition of a country, lead to scores of people losing their homes, families, relatives, identities, wealth, future and motherland.&nbsp;

To these displaced souls, home is perhaps a dream long lost in the war and feud of the politically learned. Unlike the latter, they do not understand borders, divisions and limitations between humans. To them, the world is a place to live and not one of war.

And so to live, these little girls - who come from Pakistani Hindu refugee families - are finding their own roots in the soil of Rajasthan which is where these families have found shelter and are now building what we know as "home".

<h2>A home lost, a nation found: Trials and tribulations of refugees</h2>

The girls, donning hues of Rajasthan - red, black, blue and yellow - sing the folk song on the glory of land "Dharti dhorari", as if praising it for keeping them safe in its sand dunes-filled lap.&nbsp;

The children’s participation at the fest was executed by Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation. Incidentally, the organisation’s founder, Sanjeev Newar, is an alumnus of IIT himself. Newar told Wion, “We did it because this event will inspire every child in the refugee community.”&nbsp;

Teenage girls - Aarti Bhil, Ajni Bhil, and Reshma Bhil - sing&nbsp;"Dharti dhorari" on the stage.&nbsp;

"It feels like home in India. The government is concerned with us and cares for us unlike Pakistan, where we feared for our lives," sighs Dileep, brother of Arti, as he recalls the little he saw and heard from his family before he crossed the border at the age of 8.

But what made them take the drastic decision? "My uncle was murdered by some Muslim and no one heard our pleas, that was the point when we felt we didn't belong to Pakistan and shifted here," he speaks to WION while keeping his gaze at her sister, whose mellifluous voice flows through the hall and keeps the audience captivated.

But for Aarti's father, Dehraj, the biggest relief is that his daughter now can travel freely across states without any fear of facing any consequences.&nbsp;

"In Pakistan, we were afraid even if our daughters stepped out of the houses but now my girl is performing so far from us, but I know she is safe and is getting all opportunities to build her future," the girl's father chuckles as his moist eyes recall the days of hardship when even this land was not a home but just a mere land where he did all menial jobs and endured extreme pain to feed his family.

Leaving your house and migrating to a different country comes at a high cost.&nbsp;

The case was the same for Dehraj, who sold his land at an extremely low price somehow and ran from Pakistan after he saw his brother getting tagged as "kafir" (a term used for disbelievers of God in Islam) and dying just for demanding taxi fares from Muslim passengers.&nbsp;

"In Pakistan, if you have to live as a Hindu, you will have to keep your eyes, ears and mouth shut, or else be prepared to lose your house, property and lives," Dehraj warns as his bloodshot eyes scream out his agonies.&nbsp;

For Mehtab Ram, father of Reshma, it was the dark future of his children in Pakistan which made him change his motherland and seek shelter in India.&nbsp;

"Reshma is our family's only hope and this is because we are in India," Mehtab stutters amid the wailing of his other children.

<h2>Pakistani Hindu refugees finding identity in post-CAA era</h2>

The hardships and nightmares of these refugees continue to follow them like a dark shadow in the present times but it is the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 which has now become their torchbearer as they tread ahead in the future.&nbsp;

CAA is giving them what they need the most - their identity and their right to call India their "motherland" while allowing them to slowly axe their past relationship with Pakistan.

"CAA has benefitted us a lot. Almost my entire family has got their nationalities. The application for the rest of them is under process. This has proved fruitful to all who have come from Pakistan," says Dehraj, while speaking to WION.

“Home is what you take with you, not what you leave behind” - N.K. Jemisin It's a balmy Sunday afternoon and India's capital city is waking up to a less chaotic weekend with some planning to queue outside barbeques and others teaming up to visit some of the postcard places. In the upscale neighbourhoods of South Delhi stands the dream college of engineers, IIT Delhi, famous for churning out the best of the best graduates for the industry. It was a special day for the institute, as it is trying to put on a vibrant display of cultural diversity and resilience through its festival Rendezvous 2024. Amidst the hustle-bustle and last-minute preparations before the show, three teenage girls - Aarti Bhil, Ajni Bhil, and Reshma Bhil - stand in a corner of the dark backstage - a little jittery but brimming with confidence to showcase the skills they have nurtured through the last few years. Also Read: BAPS temple in US vandalised: India deplores vandals who painted 'Hindus go back' graffiti For them, it is a momentous occasion, which will not just carve their future but will also substantiate the harsh decision of their families to leave a land which they once called "home". Home - the word appears very familiar to a lot of people yet it may feel distant or hold a different meaning to some lives that are torn apart in the politics of the powerful. Riots, political upheavals, natural calamities, coups, religious divides, conflict over land and the worst being the partition of a country, lead to scores of people losing their homes, families, relatives, identities, wealth, future and motherland. A home lost, a nation found: Trials and tribulations of refugees The girls, donning hues of Rajasthan - red, black, blue and yellow - sing the folk song on the glory of land "Dharti dhorari", as if praising it for keeping them safe in its sand dunes-filled lap. The children’s participation at the fest was executed by Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation. Incidentally, the organisation’s founder, Sanjeev Newar, is an alumnus of IIT himself. Newar told Wion, “We did it because this event will inspire every child in the refugee community.” Teenage girls - Aarti Bhil, Ajni Bhil, and Reshma Bhil - sing "Dharti dhorari" on the stage. But for Aarti's father, Dehraj, the biggest relief is that his daughter now can travel freely across states without any fear of facing any consequences. Watch: Bangladesh Hindu Temple Targeted Again, Idols Vandalized by Miscreants Leaving your house and migrating to a different country comes at a high cost. The case was the same for Dehraj, who sold his land at an extremely low price somehow and ran from Pakistan after he saw his brother getting tagged as "kafir" (a term used for disbelievers of God in Islam) and dying just for demanding taxi fares from Muslim passengers. "In Pakistan, if you have to live as a Hindu, you will have to keep your eyes, ears and mouth shut, or else be prepared to lose your house, property and lives," Dehraj warns as his bloodshot eyes scream out his agonies. For Mehtab Ram, father of Reshma, it was the dark future of his children in Pakistan which made him change his motherland and seek shelter in India. "Reshma is our family's only hope and this is because we are in India," Mehtab stutters amid the wailing of his other children. Pakistani Hindu refugees finding identity in post-CAA era The hardships and nightmares of these refugees continue to follow them like a dark shadow in the present times but it is the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019 which has now become their torchbearer as they tread ahead in the future. It's not just these girls who have emerged as a ray of hope for the families but also the son of Dehraj, Dileep, who aims to become a journalist and ensure that the voices of the underprivileged and uprooted reach the world. Leaving behind the scars of the dreadful past and the fear of being chased from one's own land, the new generation of Pakistani Hindu refugees is creating their own bright future and hoping to see a horizon with no sunset.

Every parent has at some occasion encountered a child refusing to eat certain foods. As annoying as it may be, fussy eating is possibly associated mostly with genetics, according to a large study in the UK that examined food habits of thousands of children over a period of time.

Food Fussiness or FF is "the tendency to eat a small range of foods, due to pickiness and/or reluctance to try new foods," and peaks at around seven years of age, according to the study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.

The study participants were identical and non-identical twins whose food habits were tracked over 13 years. This is the first twin study of genetic and environmental contributions to the developmental trajectory of FF from toddlerhood to early adolescence, and stability and change over time, said the study whose lead authors are Zeynep Nas and Moritz Herle.

The study found genetics, or specifically DNA, to be the top factor behind food fussiness.&nbsp;

"Genetic variation in the population explained 60 per cent of the differences in pickiness at 16 months, rising to 74 per cent and more from three to 13 years old," it said.

Individual differences in fussy eating, it said, were largely explained by genetic factors at all ages.&nbsp;

"Fussy eating also shows a significant proportion of environmental influence, especially in toddlerhood, and may, therefore, benefit from early interventions throughout childhood," it added.

The scientists found that fussy eating habits were more similar among identical twins than non-identical twins.

But fussy eating can be fixed, even though it has genetic underpinnings, according to Dr Alison Fildes, a co-author of the study.

“Parents can continue to support their children to eat a wide variety of foods throughout childhood and into adolescence, but peers and friends might become a more important influence on children’s diets as they reach their teens.”

Chinese president Xi Jinping said that women have a critical role to play in establishing a "new trend of family", as the country faces the challenge of an ageing population and record decline in the birth rate. Malaysian police said on Friday they will summon the top management of an Islamic business group after children rescued from charity homes allegedly run by the firm, suffered injuries consistent with sexual and physical assault.

Police this week rescued 402 children and youths in raids carried out at 20 premises that they said were operated by Islamic conglomerate Global Ikhwan Services and Business (GISB).&nbsp;

GISB has said they did not run the homes and denied allegations of sexual abuse at the properties. A GISB spokesperson said on Friday the firm had yet to be summoned by police.&nbsp;

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said 172 of those rescued have undergone physical and mental health screenings, with many showing old and new injuries as well as indications of emotional trauma and stunted growth.&nbsp;

Some of the children were disabled or sick, while 13 had been sodomised, Razarudin said.&nbsp;

The case has sparked outrage in Muslim-majority Malaysia, with some critics questioning why action had not been taken earlier after police said it had received complaints on GISB as far back as 2011. &nbsp;

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Friday he instructed authorities to investigate without delay and take swift action against GISB should any misconduct be found, state news agency Bernama reported.&nbsp;

Of 171 people arrested during the raids, 159 have been detained pending investigation, while others were found to have been minors and released, Razarudin said.&nbsp;

Four men and one woman are being investigated in connection with the sodomy cases, he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Link to banned sect</h2>

Razarudin said police would call up GISB's board for questioning and did not discount the possibility of further arrests or raids on premises linked to the group. He did not say when they would be summoned, citing pending investigations.

The firm, which has been linked to a banned Islamic religious sect in Malaysia, is involved in businesses ranging from supermarkets to laundromats with operations in 20 countries, according to its website.

The group has acknowledged its links to the now-defunct Malaysia-based Al-Arqam religious sect, which was banned by the government in 1994, but now describes itself as an Islamic conglomerate based on Muslim practices.

Razarudin said the minors were mostly third or fourth-generation GISB members, whose parents worked for the company and would abandon their children at ages as young as two.

"We found examples of children whose parents worked in Saudi Arabia for six years, but their kids remain here... this is a form of neglect, abuse, and exposure," he said, adding some had not seen their parents in years.&nbsp;

He said authorities screened 392 children who were being held in police facilities, while those who were sick or with special needs had been transferred to the welfare department and health ministry for further care. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Razarudin said the probe may be expanded to include allegations of cheating and money laundering, and urged potential victims to come forward.&nbsp;

Malaysia: Police to summon Islamic firm after more evidence of child sex abuse is found

New research has made a remarkable discovery that can significantly change the quality of healthcare for children. Medical clowns can help children recover quicker and reduce their hospital stays.

Medical clowns are trained professionals who use humour and playfulness to entertain children who are undergoing a treatment at hospital. The new research has found evidence that suggests that they can reduce the time children stay in the hospital and the duration of antibiotic treatment for pneumonia.

The study conducted on 51 children revealed that those who were visited by medical clowns left the hospital a day earlier than those who weren't.

“They have been shown to reduce pain and alleviate stress and anxiety in children and their families during medical treatment, and have been gradually integrated into many aspects of hospital care," said Dr Karin Yaacoby-Bianu, a researcher at the Carmel Medical Centre and Israel Institute of Technology, Israel. “But their impact on children being treated for pneumonia has not been investigated.”

“Community-acquired pneumonia is one of the leading causes of hospitalisation in children, globally,” said Yaacoby-Bianu.

<h2>Laughter can have healing effects</h2>

The research was presented at the 2024 European Respiratory Society Congress. They divided 51 children aged between 2 and 18 into two groups, who were hospitalised for pneumonia.&nbsp;

During their stay, one of the groups included four 15-minute visits from a medical clown from the Dream Doctors Project. The clowns did various activities like singing, music, and guided meditation.&nbsp;

It was found that the group visited by clowns remained in the hospital for 43.5 hours and needed 2 days of IV antibiotic treatment, on average. The second group who were not visited by the clown stayed for 70 hours on average and needed 3 days of IV antibiotics. Other parameters like heart rate and inflammation were also lower in the group visited by clowns.

“While the practice of medical clowning is not a standardised interaction, we believe that it helps to alleviate stress and anxiety, improves psychological adjustment to the hospital environment and allows patients to better participate in treatment plans like adherence to oral antibiotics and fluids,” explains Yaacoby-Bianu.

“Laughter and humour may also have direct physiological benefits by lowering respiratory and heart rates, reducing air trapping, modulating hormones, and enhancing the immune function.”

<h2>Medical clowns may ease the stress</h2>

Dr Stefan Unger, a paediatrician at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People Edinburgh, UK, says that adding medical clowns to the care team "may reduce physical and emotional stress on children and their families."

“It may also reduce costs and lift some of the burden on healthcare systems.”

The researchers are now examining whether medical clowns have similar effects on other diseases.

Medical clowns can help reduce hospital stay for children: Study

A report titled 'Food Heals Report 2024,'&nbsp;by Cuddles Foundation revealed that malnutrition significantly impacts childhood cancer treatment in India and most children diagnosed with cancer are undernourished.&nbsp;

According to the report, 57 per cent to 61 per cent of&nbsp;children diagnosed with cancer&nbsp;are undernourished.&nbsp;

The report stated that 65 per cent of newly diagnosed paediatric cancer patients in India consume less than half of their daily required calories and protein, which weakens their ability to tolerate cancer treatments.&nbsp;

An estimated 76,000 children are diagnosed with cancer annually in India, and between 57 per cent to 61 per cent of them are undernourished by the time they receive their first nutrition consultation.&nbsp;

A report titled 'Food Heals Report 2024,' by Cuddles Foundation revealed that malnutrition significantly impacts childhood cancer treatment in India and most children diagnosed with cancer are undernourished. According to the report, 57 per cent to 61 per cent of children diagnosed with cancer are undernourished. The report stated that 65 per cent of newly diagnosed paediatric cancer patients in India consume less than half of their daily required calories and protein, which weakens their ability to tolerate cancer treatments. An estimated 76,000 children are diagnosed with cancer annually in India, and between 57 per cent to 61 per cent of them are undernourished by the time they receive their first nutrition consultation. Watch: WHO-backed study: Mobile phones not linked to brain cancer × The report noted that widespread malnutrition affects children's ability to tolerate treatment, leading to more complications, infections, and poorer treatment outcomes. It further highlighted the critical role nutrition plays in paediatric oncology care, adding that malnutrition remains a key barrier to effective treatment. In India, the survival rates and quality of life for thousands of children with cancer are compromised due to inadequate nutrition. Majority of children diagnosed with cancer in India are 'malnourished': Report

It's a general notion that some children are born brilliant and excel at studies, while others 'with less intelligence' lag behind in academic performance. A large new study seeks to bust this myth, having found that motivation, self-regulation, grit and perseverance help children become better at studies.

These non-cognitive skills that are part of emotional intelligence and also include academic interest and value attributed to learning, are as important as intelligence- a largely genetic attribute- in determining academic success, found the study.

"Our research challenges the long-held assumption that intelligence is the primary driver of academic achievement," said Dr Margherita Malanchini at Queen Mary University of London, who did the study along with Dr Andrea Allegrini at University College London.

The findings challenge the traditional view of educational achievement as determined largely by intelligence, which is largely a genetic attribute.&nbsp;

Instead, it suggests that a child's "emotional and behavioural makeup, influenced by both genes and environment, plays a crucial role in their educational journey," said the release.&nbsp;

<h2>How the study was done</h2>

By analysing DNA of study participants, researchers constructed a "polygenic score" for non-cognitive skills, essentially a genetic snapshot of a child's predisposition towards these skills, it said.&nbsp;

"We discovered that genetic effects associated with non-cognitive skills become increasingly predictive of academic achievement over the school years, in fact their effect nearly doubles between the ages of 7 and 16," Dr Allegrini said.

"By the end of compulsory education, genetic dispositions towards non-cognitive skills were equally as important as those related to cognitive abilities in predicting academic success."&nbsp;

<h2>Children in same families differ in approach to studies</h2>

Children within the family may shape their own learning experiences based on their personality, dispositions and abilities.

"We found that while family-wide processes play a significant role, the increasing influence of non-cognitive genetics on academic achievement remained evident even within families," said Allegrini.&nbsp;

"Our education system has traditionally focused on cognitive development," said Dr Malanchini.&nbsp;

Use of humour by parents has a very positive impact on their relationship with children, according to a new study that highlighted the importance of laughing with your kids.

The pilot study led by Penn State University in the US had two major findings: That parents who used humour had a better relationship with their kids, and that children of parents with good humour sense considered their relationship more positively when they grew up.

"Humour can teach people cognitive flexibility, relieve stress, and promote creative problem solving and resilience," ScienceDaily quoted Benjamin Levi, the lead author of the study, as saying.

"My father used humour and it was very effective. I use humour in my clinical practice and with my own children," said Levi, a professor of paediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine. "The question became, how does one constructively use humour?"

<h2>How the study was done</h2>

For the study published in PLOS One journal, the researchers surveyed 312 respondents aged between 18 and 45.&nbsp;

Over 50 per cent of respondents said their parents used humour. And 71.8% agreed that humour can be an effective parenting tool. Most respondents do or plan to use humour with their children and believe that it has more potential benefit than harm,&nbsp;

Among the children who grew up with humourous parents, 50.5% said they had a good relationship with them, and 44.2% reported they felt their parents did a good job raising them, said ScienceDaily in a report on the study.&nbsp;

This was in stark contrast to those whose parents did not use humour. Out of those who responded that their parents didn't use humour, only 2.9% reported a good relationship with them later in life. Only 3.6% of these respondents said they thought their parents did a good job raising them.

"My hope is that people can learn to use humour as an effective parenting tool, not only to diffuse tension but develop resilience and cognitive and emotional flexibility in themselves and model it for their children," Levi said.

As someone chosen by the deity, I must accept this role," he added. Reacting to the social media, one netizen said, “The parents are the ones who need ‘treatment’ the most, not the child. Those superstitious parents should get their heads checked in a hospital instead of harming the next generation." “If this can cure diseases, why do we still need doctors? The archaeologists were left stunned when they discovered dozens of graves of children, which belonged to the Bronze and Iron Ages,&nbsp;in southern Norway.

Each of the burials&nbsp;was&nbsp;marked with circles of meticulously placed stones&nbsp;and are said to be hundreds of years old. The discovery was made by a team from Norway's Museum of Cultural History,&nbsp;last year, nearly 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of Oslo, close to the Swedish border.

"They've lain here as a secret until we found them," said museum archaeologist Guro Fossum, while speaking to Science Norway. "We uncovered one after another and ended up with 41 round stone formations," he added.

The circles of stones, each of which measured up to six&nbsp;feet (two&nbsp;metres) across, were kept together. These circles were placed around a huge, central zone.&nbsp;

The archaeologists, after carrying out further investigations, found pottery shards and burned bones beneath those stones.

<h2>Children buried were infants or 3 to 6 years old</h2>

In a new analysis, it was discovered that nearly all the burials were graves of children who were killed between 800 and 200 BC.&nbsp;

Among them, many were infants and others were between three&nbsp;to six&nbsp;years old.

"The dating shows that the burial site was used over a long period, so they couldn't all have died in the same natural disaster or outbreak of disease or epidemic," said Fossum.

The museum, in a statement, said that such a concentration of the ancient graves of children is very unique in Europe.

The statement added that the area around the burial ground is filled with rock carvings which represent Sun worship and voyages.

Archaeologists have decided to analyse the artefacts recovered from the site, which include a metal brooch and pieces of pottery.

A concerning UN report claims to have found evidence of violence against children reaching "extreme levels" in armed conflicts — particularly in Gaza and Sudan — in 2023.

One in four young children are at risk of stunted development due to restricted diet, a UN report has found. Such restricted diet, the report added, also harms children's brain development and chances of survival.&nbsp;

The United Nations previously designated "hunger hotspots" – including Palestine, Haiti and Mali – where access to food is likely to deteriorate in the coming months due to raging state of war.&nbsp;

In its latest report, UN's children's agency UNICEF assessed diets of under-five children. It found that nearly 181 million children from almost 100 countries consuming, at most, only two food groups on a daily basis – typically milk with a starchy food such as rice, maize or wheat.

This meets the criteria for “severe food poverty” and means they are “children living on the brink”, according to Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s executive director.

"This can have an irreversible negative impact on their survival, growth and brain development," she said. "Children who consume just two food groups per day, for example rice and some milk, are up to 50 per cent more likely to experience severe forms of malnutrition."

<h2>Income inequality not sole reason for stunted growth: UN report</h2>

The report found that household income was not the only driver of diet quality. Children from wealthier households in some countries were also found to be living in severe food poverty due to a predominance of unhealthy and non-nutritious foods, and a lack of knowledge among parents about what a healthy diet should look like.

Less than 10 per cent of children in severe food poverty are fed fruit and vegetables, and less than 5 per cent meat, poultry and fish.

In west and central Africa, severe child food poverty fell from 42 per cent to 32 per cent over the past decade.

One in four children under five at risk of stunted growth globally: UN report

Researchers have said that feeding children peanut products from infancy until the age of five cuts the risk of developing a peanut allergy during later years of life. They found that&nbsp;children who ate peanut pastes or puffed peanut snacks regularly from four to six months onwards were 71 per cent&nbsp;less likely to have a peanut allergy at age 13 than those who avoided peanuts.

The latest study, known as the Leap-Trio trial, followed 508 of the children to an average age of 13, during which time they were free to eat or avoid peanuts as they wished.

<h2>What does it mean?</h2>

In the West, the prevalence of peanut allergy can be as high as 1 in 200 individuals in some populations.

In the United Kingdom, peanut allergy is present in between 0.4 to 0.6 per cent of the whole population.

Researchers say that this simple dietary intervention could prevent about 10,000 cases of potentially life-threatening peanut allergies each year in the UK alone and cut worldwide&nbsp; cases by 100,000 annually.

"I strongly recommend that babies are introduced to peanuts by four months if they have eczema and by six months if they don’t have eczema," Gideon Lack, professor of paediatric allergy at King’s College London told the Guardian.

Babies with eczema are more at risk of developing peanut allergies as traces of the food can penetrate the skin more easily.

Earlier work by the same researchers found that regular consumption of peanut products from infancy reduced the risk of peanut allergy at age five by 81 per cent, compared with children who avoided peanuts for the same period.

The results of the study published in NEJM Evidence also show that the protection remained intact even after the children stopped consuming peanut butter after the age of 5.

"You will prevent the vast majority of peanut allergy, but for those cases where you aren’t able to prevent it, you can identify the children earlier when treating them is much easier," Lack was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

"Once they are at seven, eight, nine months of age, you have really missed the boat. But even if you do miss the boat, you identify children who have peanut allergy early and can treat them with immunotherapy."

Peanut butter or peanut puffs could be given to children who were still breastfeeding once they were able to manage soft foods, according to the researchers.

But even if you do miss the boat, you identify children who have peanut allergy early and can treat them with immunotherapy." Peanut butter or peanut puffs could be given to children who were still breastfeeding once they were able to manage soft foods, according to the researchers. (With inputs from agencies)
