Former prime minister Manmohan Singh was on Thursday discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here, where he was admitted after testing positive for COVID-19.

Sources close to the Congress leader said he was doing fine and returned home on Thursday afternoon.

Singh, 88, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre, a dedicated COVID-19 facility, on April 19 after he had mild fever and tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection.

He received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on March 4 and the second dose on April 3.

None of the other members of Singh's family have tested positive for the infection, the sources said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said, "Good to know former PM Dr Manmohan Singh ji has been discharged from hospital and has recovered from COVID-19. My best wishes for his good health and well being."

AIIMS put him on steroids dose for 16 weeks which will not cure the decease. It will only suppress the pain and inflammation," he said.

Tushar Mehta appearing for ED said that Chidambaram has been given the best treatment. "We have taken him in AIIMS. He took the name of Doctor Ahuja, who is the best doctor for his disease. Doctor Ahuja also talked with his family doctor Nagesh Reddy who can be the part of AIIMS team. We have no objection in that."

Sibal opposed the treatment being provided in AIIMS stated that it has no sterile atmosphere and Chidambaram should get treatment at Apollo. However, he agreed that AIIMS should provide him a private ward with sterile environment.

October 30, a special court in Delhi sent Chidambaram to judicial custody till November 13.

The Congress leader was produced before the court on completion of his ED custody in the case.

The court had, on October 24, extended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody of Chidambaram till October 30 in connection with the case.

The ED, which is probing the money laundering charges against the leader, had arrested him on October 16.

This is the second time Chidambaram is being sent to Tihar jail.

He was earlier sent to Tihar following his CBI arrest on August 21 in connection with the INX media case.

"Glad that the Government has stepped back and grudgingly acknowledged the independence of the RBI," he said on Twitter.

"My guess is that the independent directors (at least most of them) realized that the government was on a perilous course and refused to go beyond giving advice to the RBI.

"There is no harm in a technical committee examining the issue of Reserves. At least the Reserves are safe until May 2019!," Chidambaram tweeted.

Signalling a temporary truce, the Reserve Bank and the government Monday agreed to refer to an expert committee the contentious issue of appropriate size of reserves that the RBI must hold, while restructuring of stressed loans of small businesses would be considered by the central bank.

The setting up of the committee, whose members will be decided by the government and the RBI, followed a marathon nine-hour long meeting of the central board that discussed threadbare issues that had brought the central bank and the Finance Ministry at loggerheads.&nbsp;

"The Board decided to constitute an expert committee to examine the ECF, the membership and terms of reference of which will be jointly determined by the Government of India and the RBI," the central bank said in a statement.

Glad government acknowledged independence of RBI: Chidambaram

Former finance minister P Chidambaram Friday warned the NDA government against laying its hands on RBI reserves, saying it will have “catastrophic” economic consequences for the country.

He also said the minutes of a Reserve Bank of India meeting on November 7, 2016 is a “comprehensive repudiation” of the government’s “justification” for demonetisation.

Talking to reporters in Guwahati, the senior Congress leader said it is clear that the BJP has no understanding of the role of the central bank and no respect for the independence of its governor.

The government has already taken the “extraordinary step” of invoking Section 7 of the RBI Act (that empowers the government to issue directions to the RBI), he said.

He alleged that the “immediate goal of the government is to lay its hands on the reserves of the RBI and appropriate a sum of at least Rs one lakh crore to meet its fiscal deficit target and to increase spending in an election year”. He also said that “According to reports the BJP government is planning to override the RBI governor through the board of directors in which it has planted its hand-picked nominees”.

Taking to Twitter, he said the RBI Board had met on November 8, 2016 and “disagreed” with the key reasons given by the government, but “obediently endorsed demonetisation” and that was a “black day” in the central bank’s history.

Chidambaram also hit out at the government over its claim to “fix appropriate economic capital framework of RBI” after it rejected as speculation reports that it was seeking the reserve bank’s approval for release of Rs 3.6 lakh crore.

“RBI minutes of 7-11-2016 is a comprehensive repudiation of government’s “justification” for demonetisation.

“RBI Board, with many members absent, met at 5.30 pm on 8-11-2016 and disagreed with the key reasons given by government, yet obediently endorsed demonetisation. That was a black day in RBI’s history,” he tweeted.

He said that “shockingly, government’s paper calculated GDP growth in real terms and growth in money circulation in nominal terms, yet compared the two and reached absurd conclusions. So much for the competence of the government. On Modi government’s clarification that it is not seeking transfer of Rs 3.6 lakh crore reserves from the RBI and the only proposal under discussion is to fix appropriate economic capital framework of the central bank, the former finance minister questioned the claim as a “jargon”.

“You fix what is broke. Which part of RBI is broken that the government is anxious to fix,” he asked.

The Delhi High Court has extended the interim protection of former Finance minister P. Chidambaram in connection with the INX media case. He has been granted interim protection from arrest until October 25.

On August 1, the court had extended his interim protection from arrest till September 28.

An anticipatory bail plea was filed by Chidambaram seeking protection from arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Chidambaram and his son, Karti, have been under the scanner of the CBI and ED in connection with the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to INX Media, a venture promoted by former media baron Peter Mukerjea and his wife, Indrani Mukerjea.

The alleged irregularities took place in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Finance minister under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

In February, Karti was arrested for his alleged role in the case. The court, however, granted him bail in March.
