With the contest reaching its conclusion, it were the visitors Newcastle who were heading for a shock win as they led by 1-0 until the controversial moment arrived in the 98th minute. Tino Livramento touched the ball inside the penalty area, which looked accidental and not worthy of a penalty. However, in turn of moments VAR Kwiatkowski asked Marciniak to head to the pitch-side screen. After a long consultation, a penalty was awarded to PSG as they equalised to take control of their fate in the group.

Kwiatkowski, supposed to officiate as the VAR again on Wednesday withdrew before the match started with no official statement from the UEFA. It is understood, considering that a significant error was made, the UEFA was reluctant to face more backlash for another similar incident.

An 11th German fan was arrested in a separate incident in Naples, accused of violence towards a public official.

Wednesday's match kicks off at 6:45 pm (1745 GMT) at the Maradona Stadium in Naples.

Naples was also the scene of serious disorder before and after last season's Champions League last-16 clash with Eintracht Frankfurt, whose hardcore fans travelled to Italy despite a ticketing controversy which led to the German club not taking up their away allocation.

Manchester City's bid to retain their Champions League title will be less difficult than their long endeavour to win Europe's top club competition, manager Pep Guardiola said on Monday. City also won the Premier League and FA Cup to seal a treble last season but despite that success England right back Kyle Walker said there was no shortage of motivation in the squad.

"It's our job (to be motivated). We're at a massive club for a reason," he told reporters. "It comes from within that you have to keep going and be motivated. The manager wants to win more, he doesn't settle for second and we need to follow in his footsteps.

"What we've done is in the past now, it's a new season. The manager drew a diagram and had us at the bottom of the mountain and we have to climb it again. Going again is what separates good teams from great teams."
