India's Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday announced that Artificial Intelligence-based ChatGPT's use by students will be prohibited in Class 10 and 12 board exams which are set to begin on Wednesday.

"Mobile, ChatGPT and other electronic items will not be allowed in examination hall," as per the instructions released by the CBSE ahead of the exams.

The board officials emphasised that any use of ChatGPT will be considered as using unfair means by students to clear board exams with flying numbers.

"Students are not allowed to carry any electronic devices inside the exam centre. This includes using device to access ChatGPT so that unfair means is not used," said a senior board official.

Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), is an Artificial Intelligence bot which can generate student essays, news articles, songs and speeches on the basis of input given to it.

Large language model (LLM), the new artificial intelligence (AI) system, has been designed to create human-like writing through the prediction of upcoming word sequences.

Other cautionary instructions on the admit card of students read, "You should not indulge in any unfair practice. If found, you will be booked under Unfair Means (UFM) Activity and action will be taken as per the rules of the board."

"Do not believe in fake videos and messages uploaded on social media. Do not spread rumours too. You could be booked under unfair means rules," the instructions added.

No use of ChatGPT in Class 10, 12 board exams, says CBSE

99.04 per cent students passed the class 10 exams as girls gained an advantage of &nbsp;0.35 per cent over boys.

Students in Trivandrum achieved the highest pass percentage of 99.99 per cent followed by Bengaluru with 99.96 per cent and Chennai with 99.94 per cent.

The board exams were cancelled this year due to the second wave of coronavirus as the results were announced on the basis of an alternate assessment policy.

The number of students scoring between 90 and 95 per cent&nbsp;increased from 1,84,358 to 2,00,962, according to CBSE.

According to the policy laid down to assess students, 20 marks for each subject were for internal assessment with 80 marks calculated on basis of the students' performance in various tests or exams throughout the year.&nbsp;

CBSE said no merit list will be declared this year and no merit certificates will be issued to students.

According to CBSE, over 57,000 students had scored above 95 per cent in class 10 while the number of candidates scoring between 90 and 95 per cent had gone up to over two lakh.

Last year, the board had partially cancelled the exams due to the nationwide lockdown while declaring results on the basis of scores in the subjects for which exams were already conducted.

He expressed concern about the health of the students who were supposed to take part in class 10 board exams. According to highly placed sources, the officials had come to the meeting with a proposal to postpone the board exams and not to cancel them. 
 
The officials affirmed that once the situation gets normal, exams can be conducted, but the Prime Minister put his foot down and clearly said, the country cannot take the risk with the health of the children as they are underage. Therefore, it is necessary to cancel the exams altogether, rather than defer them. However, Prime Minister Modi approved the cancellation of class 10 exams and the postponement of the class 12 examinations.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday notified its assessment scheme for the pending class 10 and 12 examinations, which have been cancelled in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per the scheme, results of class 10 and 12 students, who have completed all their exams, will be declared based on their performances in the exams.

"For students who have appeared in the examinations in only three subjects, the average of the marks obtained in the best two performing subjects will be awarded in the subjects whose examinations have not been conducted," he added.

Taking note of cancellation of a few exams in northeast Delhi in view of the communal violence in the area during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in February, the board has decided to take into account internal exams to assess performances.

"There are very few students of class 12, mainly from Delhi, who have appeared in the examinations in only one or two subjects. Their results will be declared based on performances in the appeared subjects and performance in internal, practical or project assessment," Bhardwaj said.

The board will conduct exams for class 12 at a later stage when the situation is conducive and students who are unhappy with their score will have an option to appear for them.

However, the students who opt to sit for those exams, their performances in the exams will be treated as the final score.

Class 10 students will not get a chance to appear for improvement exams and their score as declared by the board will be treated final.

The four-point assessment scheme has been devised following cancellation of the pending exams, which were scheduled from July 1 to 15.

"Results based upon the assessment scheme will be declared by July 15 so candidates can apply and seek admissions in higher educational institutions in India or abroad," Bhardwaj said.
