Officials in the South African city of Cape Town launched an investigation on Monday (Feb 19) to look for the source of the foul stench which has blanketed parts of the port city.&nbsp;

The stench which covered parts of Cape Town prompted the officials to inspect sewage facilities for leaks and an environmental health team was activated before the source of the smell was traced back to a ship carrying 19,000 cows from Brazil to Iraq.

The city is expected to get some respite from the foul smell soon, as per city authorities. Zahid Badroodien, an official in the mayor’s office in charge of water and sanitation took to X and said that investigators confirmed that the source of the smell “across the city is a ship in the harbour”. &nbsp;

“Live export, as evidenced by this situation, exposes animals to perilous conditions such as dangerous levels of ammonia, rough seas, extreme heat stress, injuries, dirty environments, exhaustion, and even death,” said the political party, in a statement.&nbsp;

The incident also took place weeks after a ship carrying around 14,000 sheep and 2,000 cattle was stuck off the coast of Australia for nearly a month in sweltering heat after it was forced to abandon a trip through the Red Sea amid attacks from Yemen-based Houthi rebels.&nbsp;

At the time, animal welfare advocates were left appalled, bringing Australia’s live animal export industry under scrutiny.&nbsp;

The official added that the commercial launch of a new vaccine called 'Lumpi-ProVacInd', which is being developed by two institutes of Agri research body ICAR, will take the next "three to four months”.

Swain said that the ‘goat-pox vaccine’ is "100 per cent effective" and almost 15 million doses have already administered to the ill cattle in affected states. The population of cattle in India is 20 million.

Though the new virus outbreak has emerged as the biggest challenge to the dairy sector, most private milk producers have claimed that disease had no big impact on milk production, adding that the country is poised with surplus milk in inventories, but some have questioned this assessment.

Lumpy skin disease is a contagious viral disease that affects cattle. It causes fever, nodules on the skin and can also lead to death.

Meanwhile, officials in Maharashtra—where so far 42 animals have died and where the disease is spreading rapidly— are running an awareness campaign on the disease and also remain present in their areas of duty to provide immediate assistance to people.

This weekend, parts of western Kansas and the Texas panhandle will near 110 degrees, though stronger winds and lower humidity levels will help minimize cattle deaths, he said.

Cypriot daily Phileleftheros said the authorities are aware of the situation and monitoring the ship if it sails into the Republic of Cyprus' territorial waters.

It said animal welfare organisation Compassion in World Farming has asked for the Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture to send vets aboard the ship and examine the animals when possible.

This blows in the face of propaganda that cow dung and urine would be productively used to make medicines and agarbattis. Every enclosure has a segregated facility for bulls and cow. Most of the strays belong to the local breed which is unproductive, sick or not as productive as a farmer would like it to be.

What is surprising is that even Opposition in India has stayed away from the issue fearing backlash. Even in Madhya Pradesh, Congress, instead of tackling the issue of rural distress caused by the stray, spoke of building more shelters.&nbsp;

On being asked why is this the case, the caretaker said that, ideally, the place should have had a slant so that we could have collected urine and cow dung for processing but now it cannot be done. This blows in the face of propaganda that cow dung and urine would be productively used to make medicines and agarbattis. Every enclosure has a segregated facility for bulls and cow. Most of the strays belong to the local breed which is unproductive, sick or not as productive as a farmer would like it to be. What is surprising is that even Opposition in India has stayed away from the issue fearing backlash. Even in Madhya Pradesh, Congress, instead of tackling the issue of rural distress caused by the stray, spoke of building more shelters. The issue of culling livestock remains tangled in the religious and political ego of the Hindu community. It has been strengthened by a belief that the cattle economy does not exist. India still remains one of the biggest exporters of beef in the world. This schizophrenic approach to cattle economy instead of being resolved has become an issue of identity and other in India. It does not mean that the agrarian sector will boycott Modi as he still enjoys a high level of confidence but it can definitely spoil the party for BJP.
