Leading Danish pharma firm Novo Nordisk has claimed that its bestselling obesity drug Wegovy can cut the risk of heart attack, stroke or heart-related death by 20 per cent.

The firm claimed that the clinical study, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, has proved that its drug has medical benefits beyond weight reduction.

The clinical trial was conducted on 17,604 adults, aged 45 or older, with heart disease and obesity or who were overweight, but who didn’t have diabetes under a five-year trial called “Select”.

The test involved studying Wegovy against a placebo in addition to the standard of care for the prevention of major adverse cardiac events.

The find of a 20 per cent reduction in heart risk is higher than many experts’ prediction of 15-17 per cent, Reuters news agency reported.

Novo’s shares surged as much as 16 per cent after the publication of the study.

<h2>High expectations&nbsp;</h2>

A similar trial for the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic, which uses the same ingredient, semaglutide, previously showed it could reduce cardiovascular risk by 26 per cent, however, no trial study was shared to authenticate the claim.

It is being argued that once the Wegovy findings are peer-reviewed and published in a medical journal, more doctors would be encouraged to prescribe the drug, which is currently being sold as a lifestyle drug.

US law classifies weight-loss treatments as lifestyle drugs and bars the Medicare health plan for older Americans from covering them.

According to a report in Times Now, a hospital in Mumbai said that cases of heart attack in its emergency ward have gone up by 15-20 per cent. As reported by Times Now, Dr Santosh NU, Consultant, Neurosurgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery, Aster CMI Hospital, qoted an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) survey. The survey said that about 10-15 per cent of all types of strokes suffered by young adults result in one-fifth of hospitalisations. These, said the survey, can have a devastating impact on years that are most productive in a person's life.

Sedentary lifestyle is leading to heart diseases.

“An increase in a sedentary lifestyle is the primary reason for higher stroke cases nowadays. Several risk factors such as smoking, alcoholism, increased BMI due to lack of exercise, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, past stroke, and oral contraceptive pills can cause a stroke,” he told Times Now.

According to statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO), almost one-fifth of 17.9 million cardiovascular disease-related death globally occur in India. Unfortunately, large number of youngsters make up the tally.

There are genetic causes as well.

“When the heart has no blockages, but the muscle of the heart is abnormal, and abnormal heart muscles are completely thin or thick, and that gives rise to sudden very fast or very slow heart rate, resulting in stopping of heart and death,” said Dr Maulik Parekh from Sir HN Reliance Hospital. And, a new study presented at the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session Together with the World Congress of Cardiology has found that a "keto-like" diet may be associated with higher&nbsp;levels of "bad" cholesterol and a twofold heightened risk of deadly cardiovascular problems.

"Our study found that regular consumption of a self-reported diet low in carbohydrates and high in fat was associated with increased levels of LDL cholesterol— or 'bad' cholesterol—and a higher risk of heart disease. To our knowledge, our study is one of the first to examine the association between this type of dietary pattern and cardiovascular outcomes," the lead study author, Dr Iulia Iatan, from the Healthy Heart Program Prevention Clinic, St. Paul’s Hospital and University of British Columbia’s Centre for Heart Lung Innovation in Vancouver, Canada, said in a news release.

Meanwhile, Christopher Gardner, a research professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center who was not involved in the study, said, "This study provides an important contribution to the scientific literature, and suggests the harms outweigh the benefits. Elevated LDL cholesterol should not be dismissed as simply a negligible side effect of a VLCD (very-low-calorie diet) or ketogenic diet."

Several previous studies have suggested that an LCHF diet can lead to elevated levels of LDL cholesterol in a few people. And, elevated LDL cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease.&nbsp;For this study, the researchers defined an LCHF diet as consisting of no more than 25 per cent of total daily energy or calories from carbohydrates and about 45 per cent or more from fat.

For the new study, the researchers analysed data from the UK Biobank, which is a large-scale prospective database with health information of over half a million people living in the United Kingdom and followed for at least a decade.

The result of the study indicated that drinking just one to three cups of your favourite tea beverage lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes by four per cent. Meanwhile, it also reduced the risk of developing diabetes by one per cent for every extra cuppa.&nbsp;

"Our results are exciting because they suggest that people can do something as simple as drinking four cups of tea a day to potentially lessen their risk of developing type 2 diabetes," said a researcher related to the study.&nbsp;

Eating two servings of avocados a week was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a recent study.

The study was published in 'Journal of the American Heart Association'.

Avocados contain dietary fibre, unsaturated fats especially monounsaturated fat (healthy fats) and other favourable components that have been associated with good cardiovascular health. Clinical trials have previously found avocados have a positive impact on cardiovascular risk factors including high cholesterol.

Researchers have believed this is the first, large, prospective study to support the positive association between higher avocado consumption and lower cardiovascular events, such as coronary heart disease and stroke.

"Our study provides further evidence that the intake of plant-sourced unsaturated fats can improve diet quality and is an important component in cardiovascular disease prevention," said Lorena S. Pacheco, PhD, M.P.H., R.D.N., lead author of the study and a postdoctoral research fellow in the nutrition department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

"These are particularly notable findings since the consumption of avocados has risen steeply in the U.S. in the last 20 years, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture," she added.

For 30 years, researchers followed more than 68,780 women (ages 30 to 55 years) from the Nurses 'Health Study and more than 41,700 men (ages 40 to 75 years) from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. All study participants were free of cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke at the start of the study and living in the United States.

Researchers documented 9,185 coronary heart disease events and 5,290 strokes during more than 30 years of follow-up. Researchers assessed participants'&nbsp;diet using food frequency questionnaires given at the beginning of the study and then every four years. They calculated avocado intake from a questionnaire item that asked about the amount consumed and frequency. One serving equalled half of an avocado or a half cup of avocado.

The analysis found:

1. After considering a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors and overall diet, study participants who ate at least two servings of avocado each week had a 16 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 21 per cent lower risk of coronary heart disease, compared to those who never or rarely ate avocados.

2. Based on statistical modelling, replacing half a serving daily of margarine, butter, egg, yoghurt, cheese or processed meats such as bacon with the same amount of avocado was associated with a 16 per cent to 22 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease events.

3. Substituting half a serving a day of avocado for the equivalent amount of olive oil, nuts and other plant oils showed no additional benefit.

4. No significant associations were noted in relation to stroke risk and how much avocado was eaten.

"The study's results have provided additional guidance for health care professionals to share. Offering the suggestion to replace certain spreads and saturated fat-containing foods, such as cheese and processed meats, with avocado is something physicians and other health care practitioners such as registered dietitians can do when they meet with patients, especially since avocado is a well-accepted food," Pacheco said.

"These findings are significant because a healthy dietary pattern is a cornerstone for cardiovascular health, however, it can be difficult for many Americans to achieve and adhere to healthy eating patterns," said Cheryl Anderson, PhD, M.P.H., FAHA, chair of the American Heart Association's Council on Epidemiology and Prevention.

"We desperately need strategies to improve intake of AHA-recommended healthy diets -- such as the Mediterranean diet -- that is rich in vegetables and fruits," said Anderson, who is a professor and dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at University of California San Diego.

After considering a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors and overall diet, study participants who ate at least two servings of avocado each week had a 16 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 21 per cent lower risk of coronary heart disease, compared to those who never or rarely ate avocados. 2. Based on statistical modelling, replacing half a serving daily of margarine, butter, egg, yoghurt, cheese or processed meats such as bacon with the same amount of avocado was associated with a 16 per cent to 22 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease events. 3. Substituting half a serving a day of avocado for the equivalent amount of olive oil, nuts and other plant oils showed no additional benefit. 4. No significant associations were noted in relation to stroke risk and how much avocado was eaten. "The study's results have provided additional guidance for health care professionals to share. Offering the suggestion to replace certain spreads and saturated fat-containing foods, such as cheese and processed meats, with avocado is something physicians and other health care practitioners such as registered dietitians can do when they meet with patients, especially since avocado is a well-accepted food," Pacheco said.
