As a millennial, the words "smart earnings" are not too common in our vocabulary. We constantly hear people discussing it, but we convince ourselves that we do not have time to start making smart monetary decisions in the quest for a better future. All this can change with a simple switch in mindset and outlook.

Smart earning can only be done when you have a smart financial plan. According to Arun Singh Tanwar, founder and CEO of Get Together Finance, the ideal plan of financial planning is using his 50-30-20 rule which means to put the first portion into investing, the second portion into saving and the third into expense at the starting stage of earning. Then after some time, one can allocate the first portion into investing, then expenses, and lastly saving.

After a few years when financial commitments are the highest, it should be switched first to expenses then saving and the last can be kept for investment.

But do millennials follow that? Sadly, many do not follow this plan which leads them to an unsecured financial future.

A report titled ‘Jailed For Doing Business’ by TeamLease RegTech and Observer Research Foundation (ORF) found that while the Indian government has been pushing for ease of doing business in the country, there are still more than 26,000 imprisonment clauses as penalties for non-compliance with business laws.

In other words, non-compliance with two out of five provisions for doing business in India can send an entrepreneur to jail.

What did the report find?

The report compiled by TeamLease RegTech with the ORF, a New Delhi-based independent think tank, found that there are 69,233 unique compliances which broadly regulate doing business in India out of which 26,134 clauses have imprisonment clauses as a penalty for non-compliance.

However, the brunt of these excessive compliances is borne mainly by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), said the report. Since a typical MSME has more than 150 employees, it reportedly faces 500-900 compliances that cost at least 12-18 lakhs ($14,637-$21,955) in a year.

The report also found that five Indian states – Gujarat (1,469), Punjab (1,273), Maharashtra (1,210), Karnataka (1,175) and Tamil Nadu (1,043) – have more than 1,000 imprisonment clauses in their business laws.

It is also worth noting that this regulatory overreach impacts not only entrepreneurs running for-profits but not-for-profit institutions as well, said the report. It added, “There is a widening gap between the goods and services the country needs and how the State views the entrepreneurs creating them.”

‘First-of-its-kind’ monograph: TeamLease RegTech

Speaking about the report, TeamLease RegTech, said that this monograph is a first-of-its-kind consolidation of business compliance data that had, to date, only existed in silos across ministries and departments. Notably, the report has been collated over the past seven years by TeamLease RegTech, a regulatory technology solutions firm.

The monograph for the report has classified the data into seven broad domains – labour; finance and taxation; environment, health and safety; secretarial; commercial; industry-specific; and general. “The excessive criminalization of India’s employer compliance universe breeds corruption, blunts formal employment and poisons justice,” said the Vice Chairman of TeamLease, Manish Sabharwal, in a statement.

He added, “This report is a wonderful contribution to ideas for actionable reforms; the government has made a good start in purging compliances but truly reducing regulatory cholesterol requires extending that project to purging the 26,134 jail provisions for employers at the centre and state.”

The report offers ten recommendations on rationalising the excesses of business laws, rules and regulations, which include using criminal penalties with restraint and even calls for the creation of a regulatory impact assessment committee which could lay the foundation of policy reformation. Furthermore, the report also recommends rationalising imprisonment clauses.

“The recommendations in Jailed for Doing Business, and its thorough analysis, must compel us to change how we assess our businesses and treat those who run them,” said the President of the ORF, Samir Saran. He added, “I see this report as a springboard for new research and efforts that are needed to do away with rules, laws and codes that hold back India’s entrepreneurial energy and its emergence as a global economic powerhouse”.

In May 2023, India's retail sales of electric two-wheelers reached a new peak at 104,755 units, marking a 57 per cent increase compared to April 2023, which saw 66,724 units sold. This translates to an average of 3,379 electric two-wheelers sold per day last month. This is the first time, the sale of two-wheeler EVs topped 100,000 units.

These figures are based on end-of-day sales data from the government's Vahan website as of May 31. The record-breaking sales surpassed the previous high of 85,452 units in March 2023 by a significant margin of 19,303 units. This is despite the fact that in April, sales experienced a 22 per cent decline in April 2023 compared to the previous month.

What is driving the sale surge?

The surge in retail sales in May, particularly in the last week of the month, as per Auto Car Pro can be attributed to the Indian government's May 22nd decision to revise the subsidy under the FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles) Scheme.

Also read | UPI records 9 billion transactions in May worth Rs 14.3 trillion

The subsidy was reduced to Rs 10,000 per kilowatt per hour (kWh) from the previous Rs 15,000/kWh, and the incentive cap was lowered to 15 per cent of the two-wheeler EV's ex-factory price, down from the previous 40 per cent. This 37.5 per cent reduction in incentives resulted in higher vehicle prices starting from June 1, prompting value-conscious buyers to make their purchases earlier.

Between May 23 and May 31, a total of 57,917 electric two-wheelers were sold, indicating a rush of new purchases in the last eight days of May.

Which companies sold the most unit?

Among the leading OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), only three out of the top 25 experienced a decline in sales month-on-month.

Market leaders Ola Electric, TVS Motor Co, Ather Energy, and Bajaj Auto achieved their best-ever monthly sales figures.

- Ola Electric sold 28,438 units, surpassing its previous high of 21,991 units in April 2023.

- TVS Motor Co's iQube crossed the 20,000-unit mark with 20,253 units sold.

- Ather Energy achieved a new monthly high of 15,256 units.

- Bajaj Auto saw a remarkable 168 per cent increase in sales to 9,910 units, securing the fourth position for the first time.

These four OEMs, along with Ampere Vehicles, accounted for 83,475 units of the total 104,755 EVs sold in May, representing 80 per cent of the market share. Additionally, seven other OEMs achieved four-figure sales.

Will the sales sustain over time?

Looking ahead, the reduced FAME II subsidy, which took effect on June 1 and resulted in higher prices for e-scooters and e-motorcycles, and is expected to slow down demand in the coming months. However, it might pick up during the upcoming festival season.

Nevertheless, the prospects for the domestic electric two-wheeler industry are expected to remain strong due to the rising cost of petrol and diesel and the cost-effective nature of eco-friendly two-wheeler travel. Manufacturers are expected to announce price increases in the near future.

The lobby group noted that despite Chinese officials expressing openness to greater foreign investment, investors will feel unwelcomed in an environment where risk cannot be properly assessed, and legal uncertainties are rising.

The cases coincide with rising tensions between the United States and China, which have badly affected the confidence of American businesses operating in the world's second-largest economy.

China's counter-espionage law was revised last week, and an amendment is set to take effect in July. The law widens the scope of materials and data the country deems relevant to national security, further increasing risks for American firms.

The lobby group added that it is unclear what the long-term implications of the heightened scrutiny will be.

US-China Tech War

Meanwhile, the US is attempting to slow China's progress in high tech products without hurting US companies. This move comes after the US' microchip export limits, which were enacted last year, have had little impact on China's technology sector.

Notably, these restrictions limited US tech giant Nvidia's chip shipments. But the company designed variants of its processors for the Chinese market that were slowed down to comply with US rules.

However, even the delayed Nvidia chips are being considered an improvement for Chinese enterprises, and highlights the US dilemma of halting China's high-tech advancement.

There are two aspects to the export limitations.

The first limits a chip's ability to calculate exceedingly exact numbers, limiting the use of supercomputers in military research. The second limitation affects artificial intelligence (AI) by limiting chip-to-chip transfer speeds.

Nvidia has not stated whether it will slow down the processors used for AI-based tools like ChatGPT. However, the company said that the government is not attempting to undermine competition or the US industry and that American enterprises can supply products for commercial purposes.

While the world of crypto currencies continues to puzzle many, the kind of impact it has had on the financial systems across the world is noteworthy. But mysteries seem to be a running theme and given its origins, it is spot on. Over a decade ago, the world witnessed a cryptic milestone when Satoshi Nakamoto developed Bitcoin, the world’s first cryptocurrency. But who is this mastermind? No one knows for sure.

What do we know about Satoshi Nakamoto?

Nakamoto is said to be a pseudonym for the person or people who helped create Bitcoin but the real identity of who he, she or they might be, continues to remain one of the biggest mysteries of the 21st century. The mysterious individual or group was the author of a 2008 white paper which outlined the theory and operating structure of the Bitcoin payment system.

Nakamoto’s identity continues to remain shrouded in mystery due to the lack of personal or background details about the person who would only communicate via email. One of the biggest indications that Nakamoto created Bitcoin was the famous white paper titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”.

The elusive mastermind behind the now largest cryptocurrency in the world was said to be working on the first version of the software back in 2007. Around two years later, Nakamoto created the first-ever online message board post which was dedicated to cryptocurrency, on the P2P Foundation forum.

“I’ve developed a new open source P2P e-cash system called Bitcoin. It’s completely decentralised, with no central server or trusted parties, because everything is based on crypto proof instead of trust. Give it a try, or take a look at the screenshots and design paper,” said Nakamoto, on the forum, as per Forbes.

However, in 2010, his involvement with Bitcoin ended but the cryptocurrency did not. As of 2021, at least one million Bitcoin miners were verifying the data that make up the Bitcoin blockchain and the cryptocurrency continues to remain one of the world’s largest by market cap.

What did Nakamoto do?

It is worth noting that while the idea of digital currency was not new at the time, as reports suggest, there had been few attempts to create it. However, Nakamoto managed to solve a fundamental problem with digital currency, duplication. Unlike tangible currency like coins or paper money which could only be present at one place at a time, cryptocurrency could be duplicated which is also known as “double-spending”.

Since digital currency does not exist in physical space, the transaction of said currency would not be in a single person’s possession. As a result, digital currency could be spent more than once. In order to overcome this issue, Nakamoto created a blockchain system of verification.

Initially, one of the solutions to circumvent this problem would be third-party intermediaries like banks which would verify if the currency has already been used by its holder. However, given the additional costs and the risk of fraud of the trust-based model, Nakamoto decided to remove the human factor altogether and proposed a decentralised approach for transactions using ledgers.

This is where the blockchain comes into play. This system adds timestamps to transaction information, and cryptographic techniques are used to encrypt the data which cannot be changed and must be validated. Subsequently, the network is required to verify the authenticity of the transactions based on a majority consensus mechanism called proof-of-work.

Is Nakamoto a real person?

We know so little about the so-called father of cryptocurrency that many have questioned if Satoshi Nakamoto really does exist. However, given what is known about the mastermind behind this system, there seems to be at least one person, if not people behind it. Case in point, somebody would have to write a source code for Bitcoin, publish the white paper which began it all, send emails and even create a forum to talk about the cryptocurrency.

About his disappearance

Several reports have quoted Nakamoto’s last email written on 24 April 2011 which was a short statement to another developer where the creator of Bitcoin said “I’ve moved on to other things” and that the project was in “good hands”. In December 2010 following the creation and initial implementation of Bitcoin, the creator seemingly vanished from the public eye.

It was in 2014 when a final forum post credited to Nakamoto simply said, “I am not Dorian Nakamoto.” This came after a Newsweek magazine article published in March of that year claimed that a 64-year-old Japanese-American physicist was the creator of Bitcoin.

The report said, “The trail followed by Newsweek led to a 64-year-old Japanese-American man whose name really is Satoshi Nakamoto”. Although it could be said that Nakamoto did not necessarily ‘disappear’ considering his identity was never revealed and anonymity would likely be his only choice to avoid public scrutiny.

Is Elon Musk Satoshi Nakamoto?

There have been speculations about Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk being Satoshi Nakamoto after a former intern for Musk’s SpaceX company Sahil Gupta, in a blog post on the website Medium suggested so. He cited the billionaire’s knowledge and interests which could have led him to develop a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.

However, Musk has since denied this claim. In 2021, during a podcast by AI researcher Lex Fridman, the Tesla CEO said that he believes that the person behind the Nakamoto pseudonym is none other than cryptographic expert Nick Szabo.

“He seems to be the one more responsible for the ideas behind Bitcoin than anyone else. He claims not to be Nakamoto, but I'm not sure that's neither here nor there,” said Musk, as quoted by CNBC. However, Szabo had also previously denied this claim.
