The missile was the last test-fired in November 2017 from the Indian Air Force's fighter, Sukhoi-30MKI.

The missile was also showcased at the Dubai Air Show last year and had garnered quite a lot of interest from several countries.

BrahMos is a medium range ramjet supersonic cruise missile which can be launched from the land, air and the sea.

The missile is a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russian Federation's NPO Mashinostroeyenia.

The word BrahMos is a portmanteau of rivers Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia. It boasts of a speed of Mach 2.8 to 3.0, making it the fastest anti-ship cruise missile in the world. The missile's speed is now being upgraded to Mach 5.0

It was inducted into service in 2006 and is used by the Indian Army, Air Force, and the Navy.

It weighs between 2,500 kg and 3,000 kg, has a length of about 8.4 meters with a warhead of about 200-300 kg.

Supersonic cruise missile BrahMos successfully flight-tested from Rajasthan's Pokhran

India successfully test-fired the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from the Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet for the first time today.

The test-flight will significantly increase the IAF's air combat operations capability, the defence ministry said.

The missile, which weighs 2.5 tonnes and is the heaviest weapon to be deployed on India's Su-30 aircraft, hit a sea-based target in the Bay of Bengal from the fighter jet.

"The successful maiden test firing of Brahmos Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) from Su-30MKI will significantly bolster the IAF's air combat operations capability from stand-off ranges," the defence ministry said.

India on Friday termed as "incorrect" reports of it supplying BrahMos anti-ship cruise missiles to Vietnam even as the South Asian country said the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations has been growing in many fields including security and defence.

Replying to questions on the issue, external affairs ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said Vietnam's Foreign Ministry has already rejected the report, saying it is incorrect.

"It is not correct, that is what I am trying to say. The person who has been quoted, the ministry has already rejected and they are saying that the news item which is running and which is out is incorrect," he said.

However, there was no clear denial of the report by Vietnam's foreign ministry in the public domain.

When asked about the report, a spokesperson in the Vietnam foreign ministry said the Vietnam-India comprehensive strategic partnership has been actively developing in many fields including economics, trade, investment, culture, education, security and defence.

"The bilateral security and defence ties have been making practical contribution to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world at large," the spokesperson said, adding Vietnam persistently pursues a national defence policy of peace and of self-defence.

The spokesperson further said "procurement of defence equipment by Vietnam is consistent with the policy of peace and self-defence and is the normal practice in the national defence. We will forward your question to the relevant agency."

There was no comment available from the defence ministry on the issue.

India had held talks with Vietnam for supply of the BrahMos missile.

In February, while replying to a question in Lok Sabha on whether the government has any plans to sell Akash and BrahMos missile to Vietnam, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre had said that India has held talks with the South Asian country on the issue.

"India and Vietnam share a strategic partnership. Defence cooperation, including supply of defence equipment, is an important aspect of this partnership.

"Both countries have held discussions on range of issues in this regard," he had said in a written reply.

Vietnam, which is involved in a territorial dispute with China, is keen to get it hands on the supersonic missiles that can be fired on land, water and under water.

Indian govt denies reports of sale of BrahMos missile to Vietnam

India test-fired a long-range supersonic cruise missile for the second consecutive day, its army said.

The Indian Army said the multi-role missile, named Brahmos, demonstrated its "accuracy of less than one metre".

"The multi-mission missile hit the land-based targets with the desired precision in both the trials," an unnamed Army officer told The Times of India.

The Block-III version of Brahmos LACM (land attack cruise missile) "hit the land-based target in 'top-attack' mode", the army said, adding that the launch took place in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a group of islands on the Bay of Bengal.

The launch of Brahmos for the second consecutive day comes on the heels of heightened tension between India and Pakistan following heavy skirmishing along the Line of Control -- a de facto border separating the two nations.

It is believed that the Indian government has greenlit the deployment of the missile in Arunachal Pradesh, apparently to counter China's rising influence in the region.
