<h2>Allegations against Menendez</h2>

Federal prosecutors alleged that Menendez used his position as the former Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman to help one businessman hammer out a contract with Egyptian officials.

They also alleged that being a senior senator in New Jersey, he helped one accomplice accused in an insurance fraud case escape investigation.

According to prosecutors, another New Jersey businessman Jose Uribe paid $15,000 in cash to Menendez's wife Nadine in the spring of 2019. She used the money as down payment for the luxury car that the duo bought.

She texted Menendez, "Congratulations. We are the proud owners of a 2019 Mercedes," according to prosecutors.

Menendez's has also pleaded not guilty to the charges&nbsp;that are due to be tried separately.

<h2>FBI raid</h2>

In June 2022, USA's federal investigative agency FBI raided Menendez's house and found 13 gold bars, nearly half a million dollars in cash and the convertible Mercedes-Benz.

"Menendez made multiple public statements supporting the government of Qatar" while the company was considering investments into a real estate development owned by Daibes, the indictment said.

Daibes is also charged in the case and has pleaded not guilty, with the trial set for May 6.

In the Egypt-related charges, Mendendez has been accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from three New Jersey residents between 2018 and 2022, and of having used his "power and influence to protect, to enrich those businessmen and to benefit the government of Egypt."

Hana’s attorney Lawrence Lustberg also rejected the new allegations.

"The new allegation that Wael Hana was part of a plot concocted over dinner to enlist Senator Menendez as an agent of the Egyptian Government is as absurd as it is false," Lustberg said.

"As with the other charges in this indictment, Mr&nbsp;Hana will vigorously defend against this new and baseless allegation."
