A new breakthrough blood test has been invented by scientists for detecting brain cancer. This test churns faster results and is less invasive in comparison to a surgical biopsy.&nbsp;

More than 100 microlitres of blood are required to carry out this novel 'liquid biopsy' and in an hour the method is able to detect biomarkers related to glioblastoma, which is the deadliest brain tumour.&nbsp;

The accuracy of this test is best in comparison to all other existent markers and tests for glioblastoma. According to the prototype's developers, the test has "near turn-key functionality".

A team of scientists from the United States and Australia made the breakthrough and the University of Notre Dame's scientists led the entire team.&nbsp;

The test has been based on sensing mutated blood biomarkers which are known as epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) and are overexpressed in a few kinds of cancers, like&nbsp;glioblastoma.

The scientists found these blood biomarkers present inside extracellular vesicles which are small packages filled with proteins, lipids, and genetic material which belong to their original cells.

"Extracellular vesicles or exosomes are unique nanoparticles secreted by cells,"&nbsp;said biomolecular engineer Hsueh-Chia Chang from Notre Dame.

"They are big – 10 to 50 times bigger than a molecule – and they have a weak charge. Our technology was specifically designed for these nanoparticles, using their features to our advantage," he added.

A supersensitive biochip was covered with an untreated sample of blood plasma by the researchers to detect the molecules which were released by cancerous tumour cells.

This chip has a tiny sensor which contains antibodies&nbsp;that get attracted to the exosomes carrying mutated EGFRs.

Once these EGFRs get attached to the biochip, a voltage change happens in the plasma solution which if leads to the creation of a high negative charge, indicates the presence of cancer.&nbsp;

<h2>How do scientists carry out the test to detect cancer in one hour?</h2>

In the experiments done, the clinical blood samples were taken from 10 healthy individuals and 20 patients suffering from glioblastoma and the biochip was tested using them.&nbsp;

For every test, one chip was used. The liquid biopsy was finally able to detect the cancer biomarkers with accuracy and also reflected a very low prognostic value, which hinted that the test is highly replicable.

"Our electrokinetic sensor allows us to do things other diagnostics cannot,"&nbsp;said biomolecular engineer Satyajyoti Senapati from Notre Dame.

The researchers focussed on a commercially available blood test called ALZpath. They analysed results obtained from 786 people in the US, Canada and Spain. These people had also had a lumbar puncture or an amyloid PET scan to detect presence of tau proteins in their brain. Three trials were carried out and it was seen in all of them that ALZpath blood test was as effective as traditional methods to detect signs of Alzheimer's.

“A blood test is cheaper, safer and easier to administer, and it can improve clinical confidence in diagnosing Alzheimer’s and selecting participants for clinical trial and disease monitoring,” said Prof Thomas Karikari from University of Pittsburgh.

It is an antibody-based blood test to detect a specific protein called brain-derived tau. This protein is specifically linked to Alzeimer's disease.

In April, a team of the Indiana University School of Medicine in the US launched the blood test. It seems to have claimed it to be psychiatry’s first-ever biological answer to diagnose a mood disorder. &nbsp;

Dr Alexander Niculescu, a psychiatrist and geneticist, who led the research, said, “Our study shows that it is possible to have a blood test for depression and bipolar disorder, that have clinical utility, can distinguish between the two, and match people to the right medications.” &nbsp; &nbsp;

“This avoids years of trials and error, hospitalisations and side-effects,” added Niculescu.

The study seems to have delved into the biological basis of mood disorders. It has developed a tool to distinguish which type of mood disorder a person has, depression or bipolar disorder. &nbsp;&nbsp;

To develop the test, Niculescu’s team drew on its 15 years of research into how psychiatry relates to blood gene expression biomarkers, measurable indicators of a biological state in the form of RNA, DNA, proteins or other molecules. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The blood tests, which have been developed by Dr Niculescu and his team, are now available as CLIA tests for physicians to order, through a company set up by Niculescu and others in the field. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A simple blood test named 'Galleri' that can detect more than 50 different types of cancers before they show any clinical signs or symptoms is accurate enough to be used as a multi-cancer screening test, according to scientists.

The company that developed and funded the research, GRAIL, Inc. (California, USA), has recently made the multi-cancer early detection test available in the United States by prescription only. This would supplement other current screening procedures for breast, cervical, prostate, lung, and bowel cancers.&nbsp;

An earlier version of Galleri was shown in clinical testing to be capable of detecting more than 50 forms of cancer with a single blood draw, 45 of which do not have recommended screening.

In total, more than 134,000 individuals have participated in GRAIL's blood test clinical trials. The examination also reveals the location of cancer.&nbsp;

“When a cancer signal is detected in these trials, the test also pinpoints where the cancer is located in the body with high accuracy,” Dr Joshua Ofman, chief medical officer and head of external affairs at GRAIL, told Healthline. “This helps healthcare providers to determine next steps for diagnosis and care.”

Many of the cancers that the test can detect don't really have screening tests, including liver, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers, which are among the most lethal and where early detection could save lives.&nbsp;

The research is not a predictive test, but rather simply picks up signs of cancer in the body before they become pervasive enough to cause apparent changes in the body, which is mostly when people get diagnosed with the disease. This early detection can prevent many deaths and complications by taking early&nbsp;steps to bring it under control.

The researchers who contributed belong to various schools of Fudan University -&nbsp;State Key Laboratory of Genetic Engineering and Collaborative Innovation Center for Genetics and Development,&nbsp;Taizhou Institute of Health Sciences, and the&nbsp;Human Phenome Institute.

"Non-invasive"

The study was published in the journal Nature Communications and the test it has developed is a “DNA methylation-based” non-invasive blood test.

Even though earlier studies have claimed to have achieved the same, this particular test is peculiar for it diagnoses the cancer even before its symptoms become apparent in patients.

The researchers looked for methyl groups in the DNA, which are one of the significant signs of tumour. They then picked up small strands of DNA to ascertain the presence of cancer.

Employing technology based on artificial intelligence, they developed a system to determine whether any DNA came from tumours.

Early diagnosis: Early treatment

They collected 414 plasma samples from people in China between 2007-2014.

Out of these cancer free samples, 191 came out with symptoms of stomach, liver, lung, colorectal cancers, after which they were diagnosed.
