As per <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/blood-safety-and-availability">World Health Donation data</a>, in high-income countries, only 31.5 out of 1000 people donate blood. In upper-middle-income countries, it's 16.4 out of 1000, in lower-middle-income countries 6.6 out of 1000 and in low-income countries, it's 5.0 out of 1000.

To understand why blood donation is important and to bust the many myths around it, WION connected with Dr Kavitha Sudheendran, Family Medicine Physician, Apollo Clinic, Chennai.

"Blood donation is an important part of global healthcare, with over 100 million units contributed annually. Blood donation is crucial for patients undergoing surgery, coping with trauma, managing chronic illness, and battling cancer," says Dr Sudheendran.

<h2>Busting myths about donating blood</h2>

One of the primary concerns that people have when it comes to blood donations is safety, and that giving blood can result in infections.

However, according to Dr Sudheendran, "For donors, it is ensured that blood donation is safe as using sterile single-use needles and equipment ensures no such infections can occur."

Furthermore, she said that the discomfort is minimal and donation has no long-term effect on a donor's immunity or strength.

"The discomfort is slightly noticeable, comparable to a pinch, and the entire process of donation usually lasts less than an hour, which means that it's fast and simple but with minimum inconvenience to an individual."

Another common myth is that people with tattoos are not eligible to donate blood. However, as per the&nbsp;expert, "If your tattoo was made by a registered person, healed well and your condition meets the requirements,&nbsp;then after a while, which can range from 3 to 12 months as stipulated in the said laws, one can donate blood."

When you donate blood, it is separated into different components —&nbsp;red blood cells, plasma, and platelets —&nbsp;each of which can save a separate life.

Dr Sudheendran explains that red blood cells are extremely important for treating anaemia and supporting surgeries.&nbsp;Platelets are crucial for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or those with low platelet counts, helping to prevent excessive bleeding and promote wound healing.

Plasma, which is rich in protein and helps with clotting, can aid in treating trauma, burns, and liver diseases. Cryoprecipitate, a component of plasma, is used to manage bleeding disorders like haemophilia by providing essential clotting factors.

By donating blood, not only do you save lives, but it is actually good for your health. "Giving blood regularly is well-tolerated when performed in appropriate intervals (commonly every 8–12 weeks), which promotes good levels of iron for body functioning and is, therefore, conducive to an improved state of heart," stated the family physician.

Penetrative anal sex has a higher risk of spreading many types of sexually transmitted diseases, because the thin lining of the anus is easily damaged, making it more vulnerable to infection.&nbsp;

The new rules have replaced policies that previously singled out men who have sex with men (MSM) or women who have sex with MSM for deferrals.

AFP quoted Andrew Goldstein, a cancer researcher from Los Angeles, who was a regular blood donor when he was younger. But the FDA's previous policies made him ineligible to donate since he is a gay man. Goldstein welcomed the move.

"Something like giving blood feels like something so small that you can do, and it means a lot to me that I'll be able to do that again," said Goldstein, who participated in a clinical study in 2021 that paved the way for the new guidance.&nbsp;

According to the data from the Red Cross, every two seconds, a person in the United States requires blood or platelets. The need may arise due to surgery, cancer treatment, chronic illness or traumatic injuries.

Shabir Hussain Khan's story started in 1980 when his friend met with an accident in Jammu and Kashmir summer capital in Srinagar. He went to the hospital to donate blood for his friend and since then he has donated 182 pints of blood in the last four decades. Not only has he donated blood hundreds of times but also organised over 1200 blood donation camps across the union territory.&nbsp;

''I started over 40 years ago around 1980 in the SMHS Hospital in Srinagar Medical College. My friend had an accident, and I went to donate blood for him, but then I continued to donate blood. It created some beautiful satisfaction in my heart, as I belong to a BPL family, and I used to see people in trouble finding it difficult to get blood in these hospitals. I thought it is the best thing to do for humanity. Our Islam also teaches us the same. I have donated 182 pints of blood since 1980, I have organised more than 1200 blood donation camps across the valley, '' said Shabir Hussain Khan, volunteer blood donor.&nbsp;

Khan has been called the biggest life saver of the union territory. He says he will keep donating his blood till the time he is alive. As his blood group is O negative making him a universal donor, he says saving lives is his life's mission and the best satisfaction as well.&nbsp;

''I had only and only thought that Allah will bless me if I help the people in need. My blood group is O negative, and a lot of children require it and I feel proud that I am able to help. Allah had decided this for me, and I think it is the best thing that could have happened to me. When humans donate blood, they leave everything in the hands of God. People pray for me all the time and I have made this promise to myself that I will keep donating my blood till I am alive, '' said Shabir Hussain Khan, Volunteer Blood Donor.&nbsp;

Shabir has been continuously doing awareness programmes across the Kashmir valley and inspiring thousands of youngsters to donate blood for people in need. He has been motivating people to donate blood. Shabir also held blood donation camps during the peak of corona time for the people in need.

Shabir's only wish is that the government of India recognises his and the efforts of other blood donors in the valley. Shabir has not received a single government award for being the highest blood donor of the union territory.&nbsp;

''Government does not recognise our efforts, ten times my name was sent for state award but did get it. I hope there is a scheme for blood donors. They need to be appreciated for their work. They need the government to appreciate their efforts. The refreshments for the donors are nothing, '' said Shabir Hussain Khan, volunteer blood donor.&nbsp;

Shabir Hussain Khan's journey in blood donation started decades ago and he continues to save lives of people without getting anything in return.

Canada&nbsp;announced Thursday a lifting of restrictions on blood donations by gay and bisexual men that dates back to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.

Instead, donors will be screened for high-risk sexual behaviours, regardless of gender or sexuality.

"Under the new screening approach, Canadian Blood Services will introduce a sexual behaviour-based donor-screening questionnaire that will apply to all donors of blood and plasma," the health department said in a statement.

The policy change&nbsp;to be implemented by September marks "a significant milestone toward a more inclusive blood donation system," it said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it "good news for all Canadians," adding at a news conference: "Our blood supply will continue to be safe and we're doing away with a discriminatory blanket ban."

The move follows several changes to the blood donation regime over the past decade that saw deferral periods for donations by gay men progressively lowered from a lifetime ban to three months in 2019.

This meant at the time that men who had sex with men could not donate blood if they'd had sex during the period prior to the donation.

Usually someone hoping to donate blood is asked to fill a questionnaire in advance in which one question inquired if a man has had any sexual relationship with another man. That clause will now be removed, as per the Health Minister.

As of now, gay men could donate blood only if they hadn’t had sexual relationship with another man in the last 12 months.

I have seen people pleading for blood at hospitals, looking for it here and there, calling their friends at the last minute. This, at a time, when they are dealing with the trauma of a loved one being sick. 
 
I can&rsquo;t think of a civilisation that would increase your suffering when you are already weak and trying to cope with that. Then you have the added responsibility of finding blood units. It is one of the most ridiculous experiences of being in a hospital. How could a society, that is so advanced, be so poorly prepared for such eventualities! 
 
Paid donors 
 
Blood donation is an altruistic activity. It should be on a voluntary basis. We don&rsquo;t need anyone to certify this aspect of blood donation, but just to drive home the point even the highest judicial institution of the country says the same. 
 
The reality is quite different. According to a research paper in Asian Journal of Transfusion Science, 50 per cent of blood collection is estimated to be from paid blood sellers and merely 5 per cent of the voluntary donors are repeated donors. 
 
With the severe shortage of blood in Indian hospitals, there is a burgeoning market for buying and selling of blood. Usually people from poor backgrounds such as daily wage earners or construction workers find this as a lucrative way of earning money. 
 
At the same time, people from impoverished sections are at a higher risk of contracting HIV, hepatitis and other diseases. In some of the case studies, it has been observed that first these people start voluntarily as paid donors, risking their health but after a while they are forced by the touts to give their blood. They are unable to get out of this quagmire. 
 
There is a lot missing 
 
Also, in India, the culture of blood donation is lacking immensely. Most of the times, a person would donate blood only when his/her family member is in hospital and he/she is required to replenish the hospital blood bank with the same quantity of blood as used in the treatment. 
 
There are several unlicensed blood banks in the country as well further bolstering this black market. Around 34 per cent of the blood banks in India are unlicensed. Private blood banks are legal as long as they obtain a government licence which comes at Rupees 8,000. 
 
These issues put a big question mark on the quality of blood collected, whether there has been proper check for the infections or not and also, whether the blood collected is from a paid donor or a voluntary donor.

Contaminated blood 
 
All blood banks in India have to mandatorily test all collected blood units for five transmission infections, including HIV, Hepatitis&ndash;B Virus, Hepatitis-C Virus, Syphilis and Malaria. 
 
Ideally, the banks should be checking for infections, but how many actually do is a different story. The numbers in this regards are not comforting. 
 
In a recent Right to Information (RTI) &nbsp;reply, the National AIDS Control Organisation in India said that in the past 17 months, at least 2,234 people have been infected with HIV while getting blood transfusion. 
 
The number is the highest for Uttar Pradesh where 361 such cases were reported while Gujarat came second with 292 cases, Maharashtra third with 276 and New Delhi stood fourth with 264 such cases. 
 
The National Thalassemia Welfare Society estimates that 6-8 per cent of its own patients contract diseases, including HIV, through transfusions. 
 
In 2013, two thalassemic children died and 21 others were diagnosed with HIV after a single, unlicensed blood bank was found to be transfusing patients without testing in Junagadh, Gujarat, reported the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics. 
 
How other countries handle such situations? 
 
People have been infected in all parts of the world with contaminated blood. The All Party Parliamentary Group for Haemophilia and Contaminated Blood last week published a critical report about the help provided to the thousands infected with Hepatitis C and HIV by contaminated blood during the 1970s and 1980s. 
 
Between 1978 and 1985, more than 1,500 haemophiliacs were infected with the HIV virus in a similar way, most of whom were co-infected with hepatitis C as well. 
 
Many haemophiliacs were infected at the Royal Free hospital&rsquo;s unit and many have since died. Currently, all those infected by Hepatitis C or HIV receive a &pound;20,000 lump sum when they join the payment scheme and if someone progresses to the more serious stage of Hepatitis C they get another &pound;50,000. 
 
In the 1980s, Canada also went through a blood contamination crisis and paid billions of dollars out. Since then the Canadians have taken steps to contain the problem. 
 
No lesson learnt 
 
According to the World Health Organisation, India with a population of 1.2 billion needs 12 million units of blood annually but it collects only 9 million. 
 
There is a deficit of 25 per cent. India has no law under which the police can take penal action against somebody selling blood. 
 
Even though, the Supreme Court in a judgment in 1996 has banned paid donations, the lawmakers have not formulated any blood-related law till now. Beyond that, tens of thousands have been infected and not a dime has been paid in compensation. 
 
Lessons have not been learnt and blood testing continues to stay archaic. Blood testing and stopping contamination may still be a far cry as basic healthcare is still missing. It is shameful for politicians and the medical community to have a failure like this stare them in their face.

In the 1980s, Canada also went through a blood contamination crisis and paid billions of dollars out. Since then the Canadians have taken steps to contain the problem. No lesson learnt According to the World Health Organisation, India with a population of 1.2 billion needs 12 million units of blood annually but it collects only 9 million. There is a deficit of 25 per cent. India has no law under which the police can take penal action against somebody selling blood. Even though, the Supreme Court in a judgment in 1996 has banned paid donations, the lawmakers have not formulated any blood-related law till now. Beyond that, tens of thousands have been infected and not a dime has been paid in compensation. Lessons have not been learnt and blood testing continues to stay archaic. Blood testing and stopping contamination may still be a far cry as basic healthcare is still missing. It is shameful for politicians and the medical community to have a failure like this stare them in their face.
