The drug, which is administered subcutaneously, or under the skin, is also known as elranatamab, and belongs to the class of bi-specific antibodies — these boost the immune system's ability to target and eliminate cancerous cells by bringing together immune cells with cancer cells.

Pramita started experiencing symptoms during Covid induced lockdowns. When her parents got her tested, the family came to know that she was suffering from Acute Minor Leukemia (blood cancer). Her parents stood by her side firmly and her treatment began. She received treatment in Lucknow and Gurugram.

"I didn't have a consistent schedule due to my untimely sickness &amp; hospital visits. However much I could read, I read with full concentration... my aim is to become a doctor," she said as quoted by ANI.

She has been quoted in media reports as saying that she studied even during her visits to hospital.

Times of India said that her school arranged online classes for her and even arranged for her to take her exam in Gurugram when she was receiving treatment.

After that, a bone marrow biopsy was performed and samples were sent to a US laboratory on the recommendation of specialists. He was then diagnosed with "intermediate risk" myelodysplastic syndrome. Cortizo did not reveal if he would receive treatment. He said that he will undergo a second evaluation in the US city of Houston in July to find out the extent of the disease. "I want to say that I feel well, I'm in good spirits and that I will continue with my regular work," Cortizo said. What is myelodysplastic syndrome? According to the American Cancer Society, myelodysplastic syndrome is considered a type of cancer affecting the body's ability to make healthy blood cells in the bone marrow. Julio Sandoval, a doctor specialising in internal medicine and critical care, told AFP: "The disease diagnosed to the president is a type of blood cancer." Citing Sandoval, the news agency further reported that this type of cancer makes the patient feel tired and weak, and leads to weight loss. Sandoval said that the disease can be caused "by a genetic disorder that develops silently and appears after the age of 60." On Wednesday, the Chandigarh BJP president Arun Sood addressed a press conference and said that the 68-year-old MP was on a recovery path. She had begun treatment for the disease last year. 
 
“She had suffered a broken left arm at her Chandigarh house on November 11 last year. After her medical tests at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. The disease had spread to her left arm and right shoulder. For treatment she had to go to Mumbai on December 4,” said Sood. 
 
The actress was reportedly being treated in Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital and the disease had receded from her arm and shoulder after months of treatment.&nbsp; 
 
“Even though she is recovering after her four-month treatment and no longer admitted at Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai, she has to visit the hospital regularly for treatment," Sood added.&nbsp;

The news was confirmed by her husband, actor Anupam Kher on Twitter on Thursday.&nbsp;

The blood test, called PanSeer can detect cancer in 95 per cent people who show no symptoms but inevitably develop the disease.

The researchers who contributed belong to various schools of Fudan University -&nbsp;State Key Laboratory of Genetic Engineering and Collaborative Innovation Center for Genetics and Development,&nbsp;Taizhou Institute of Health Sciences, and the&nbsp;Human Phenome Institute.

"Non-invasive"

The study was published in the journal Nature Communications and the test it has developed is a “DNA methylation-based” non-invasive blood test.

A new therapy is showing positive results in the US, but children in India suffering from blood cancer may not be able to access it anytime soon, Frances Milnes, Market Access Head of multi-national pharma giant Novartis, shared this information.

Introduced last month in the US, Chimeric Anitigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is a last resort for children suffering B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer.

In India, over the last 20 years, number of children affected by ALL has doubled and the number stands at an estimated 25,000 children diagnosed with ALL every year. It will be tough to bring the CAR-T therapy to India because the cost of the therapy is eye-watering.

The one-time therapy costs Rs 3.8 crore or US$4,75,000 and Novartis has no plans to make it accessible to India in near future.

It is the first-ever FDA approved cell therapy and it shows high rates of remission. Over 80% of pediatric patients who were treated got cured. &quot;Most children have stem-cell transplants and are cured but it relapses in some children, and in most children with relapse the CAR-T therapy works and it is really the last chance for them,&quot; said Milnes. Currently, the therapy is available in only a few accredited hospitals in the US to patients who are insured.

&quot;We are not looking at India as a market at the moment because of affordability issues. Also, it is too early to say anything. We are now moving towards introducing it in Europe first,&quot; said Milnes.

Milnes said that it took an immensely long time for the process of research and formulation of the therapy. &quot;We remove cells from the patient and take them to a processing plant. After about 21 days, the cells are ready to be reintroduced in the patients. The process is to modify the cells and scale them up to make sure there are enough cells to put back in the body, so they can go and fight the cancer,&quot; said Milnes.

&quot;It is an exciting therapy. It is one of a kind and helps give patients another shot at life. However it is too expensive for Indians to afford and we are hoping that Indians can access it in India sooner,&quot; said Dr Sameer Kaul, Surgical Oncologist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi.

Millnes said that the patient will only get charged by the pharma company if they have responded to the therapy by the end of the first month. &quot;This is outcomes based contracting or pricing and you do not pay if the therapy fails to work on you,&quot; Milnes stated.
