In the first official proposal that Netanyahu submitted to his security cabinet late on Thursday (Feb 22), the document sees the Israeli army persisting in its war on Hamas until it achieves key goals.

These include dismantling Hamas and Islamic Jihad and safeguarding the release of all hostages that are held captive in Gaza.

After the war comes to an end, Gaza's civil affairs would be run by "local officials with administrative experience" who are "not linked to countries or entities that support terrorism", the Times of Israel newspaper reported citing key elements of Netanyahu's plan.

At the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that this move comes after "recent talk in the international community about an attempt to unilaterally impose on Israel a Palestinian state."

He said the formal statement would reflect that, "Israel rejects outright international dictates regarding a permanent arrangement with the Palestinians. Such an arrangement can only be reached in direct negotiations between the sides, without preconditions."&nbsp;

"Israel will continue to oppose a unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. Such a recognition, following the massacre of October 7, will give terrorism a huge reward, a reward like no other, and will prevent any future peace agreement," the Israeli prime minister said.

"The crew observed the missiles impact the water near the ship. There were no reported injuries or damage to the ship. The ship has continued underway."

Notably, immediately after the Hamas attack, the Netanyahu administration announced a&nbsp;closure on the occupied West Bank, citing security reasons. The immediate repercussion was that&nbsp;more than 100,000 Palestinians who worked in Israel but lived in West Bank before the war, could not enter Tel Aviv.

Since then, the majority of Palestinians have been unemployed as the war continues without a break.&nbsp;

According to reports, MBZ was willing to help Netanyahu but the abrupt request to pay the Palestinian workers startled him, leading to the vexed response.&nbsp;

The leader of the National Unity party, Benny Gantz, was named as the preferred prime minister after the war by almost a quarter (23 per cent) of the respondents.&nbsp;

Despite the low share of the respondents who wish to see Netanyahu as prime minister when the war is over, there is no alternative on the Right whose support even comes close, the survey showed.

Minister of Internal Security Ben-Gvir is preferred by only 1.5 per cent, ex-Mossad chief Yossi Cohen by 1 per cent and&nbsp;Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant by just 0.5 per cent&nbsp;of respondents.

This is not the first instance when Netanyahu's popularity has taken a dip. Last week, another poll was carried out by the Bar-Ilan University in which it was revealed that only 24 per cent of Israelis considered Netanyahu as the most trustworthy source of news related to the war against Hamas.

Israeli officials confirmed the local media reports that Egypt has laid out a new proposal for a truce which includes the release of all Israelis held hostage in the Gaza Strip. Reports in the Israeli media indicate that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration has not rejected the proposal and that further negotiations may follow.

But PM Netanyahu said that Israel will keep fighting in Gaza until a complete victory over Hamas is achieved.

"This is the only way to destroy Hamas, bring our hostages back, and ensure that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel," Netanyahu said.&nbsp;

According to the Saudi news website Asharq cited by The Times of Israel, the Egyptian initiative is a plan to end hostilities and release all the remaining hostages&nbsp;in three stages.

But PM Netanyahu said that Israel will keep fighting in Gaza until a complete victory over Hamas is achieved. "This is the only way to destroy Hamas, bring our hostages back, and ensure that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel," Netanyahu said. According to the Saudi news website Asharq cited by The Times of Israel, the Egyptian initiative is a plan to end hostilities and release all the remaining hostages in three stages. Egypt's proposal for peace in Gaza: Reading into three stages According to a report in The Times of Israel, the first stage would be a two-week halt in fighting, extendable to three or four, in exchange for the release of 40 hostages — women, minors and elderly men, especially sick ones. In return, Israel would release 120 Palestinian prisoners of the 'same categories', the report added. During this time, hostilities would stop, Israeli tanks would withdraw, and humanitarian aid would enter Gaza, it said further. The third stage would include a comprehensive ceasefire and the release of the remaining Israeli hostages, including soldiers, in return for a to-be-determined number of Palestinian security prisoners in Israeli jails affiliated with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad groups. Israel-Hamas war: Hopes of truce revived as Egypt proposes ambitious peace plan

United States President Joe Biden said he did not talk about a ceasefire during his phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as he pressed the latter to ensure the civilians in Gaza are protected.

“I had a long talk with Netanyahu today [Saturday] and it was a private conversation,” Biden told reporters on Saturday (Dec 23).

“I did not ask for a ceasefire,” he said, in response to a shouted question.

The White House in a statement later, said that Biden and Netanyahu discussed Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, including its “objectives and phasing”.

Biden “emphasised the critical need to protect the civilian population including those supporting the humanitarian aid operation, and the importance of allowing civilians to move safely away from areas of ongoing fighting,” said the statement.

“The leaders discussed the importance of securing the release of all remaining hostages.”

The telephone call between the two leaders came a day after the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding "safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale”. However, it did not mention a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants.

The US and Russia abstained from the vote, whose impact on the ground, aid groups fear, will be close to nil.

On December 20, Netanyahu had ruled out a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip until the "elimination" of the Palestinian terror group Hamas.

He reiterated his country's long-standing position on the war saying that the fighting wouldn't stop at all unless Hamas was "completely destroyed" and hostages were released safe and sound.

He said Hamas was given "a simple choice — either to surrender or die" as they did not "have any option".

In an interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera news, Hamas spokesperson Ghazi Hamad said, “Some people are looking for a small pause -- a pause here and there for one week, two weeks, three weeks. But we want to stop the aggression (completely). I think we will not play this game.”
