<p>What came next has set social media abuzz, with animal lovers leaving positive comments to the viral video. Suddenly, the baby elephant in the background started to tap on Kaunda's shoulder.&nbsp;It comes up from behind the journalist and put his trunk on his shoulder and face.</p>

<p>The major challenge in reuniting baby elephants that are separated from their herd, is that - the herd must be somewhere in the vicinity of the lost baby for an easy reunion, else the baby won’t be accepted by other herds of elephants. In cases where the baby cannot be reunited with the herd, forest officials would have to take the elephant captive and raise it in a captive elephant camp.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In this case, the forest staff left the baby elephant near what was suspected to be its own herd, but the baby came back running to the humans, owing to heavy rain and mist. On the following day, the officials are said to have used a small rope and tied the baby elephant near the spot where it was first found. This was done in the hope that the herd would find the baby based on its trumpeting calls.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When forest officials returned to the same spot, they found just the rope and telltale signs of a herd of elephants having visited the spot - its footprints, slanted vegetation, and thickets etc. Thus, the officials partially confirmed that the elephant was reunited with its herd. However, amid the inclement weather in the region, they are also following the herd from a distance to confirm visually if the baby is back in the pack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Supriya Sahu, IAS, Principal Secretary, Environment, Climate Change &amp; Forests, Tamil Nadu Govt, had tweeted out videos of the rescue of the baby elephant and the attempts made to reunite it with the herd.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mana Srivate, a rescue worker from Thailand, has been in the profession of healthcare for the last 26 years and has performed&nbsp;dozens of resuscitation. However, never did he think he would have to perform one on an elephant.</p>

<p>In&nbsp;the eastern province of Chanthaburi, a motorcyclist crashed into a baby elephant who was crossing the road with his herd. Both, the elephant and the motorcyclist, were injured in the collision after which emergency services were called.</p>

<p>While the unit served to the motorcyclist,&nbsp;Srivate helped the baby elephant who was lying in the middle of the road. His act was captured on video which was circulated on Thailand's social media.</p>

<p>In the video,&nbsp;Srivate can be seen&nbsp;giving two-handed compressions to a small elephant lying on its side as colleagues a few metres away treat a dazed and injured motorcycle rider.</p>

<p>"It’s my instinct to save lives, but I was worried the whole time because I can hear the mother and other elephants calling for the baby," Srivate said. "I assumed where an elephant heart would be located based on human theory and a video clip I saw online."</p>

<p>Recalling the moment the baby elephant came back to his senses and showed signs of movement, he said, "When the baby elephant starting to move, I almost cried."</p>

<p>The elephant was taken to a nearby location for treatment and was later returned to the same spot after it made recovery. Immediately after the baby elephant called out its mother, the herd of elephants came back to help the baby of the family.</p>

An Austrian minister has become the honorary godmother of a baby elephant born at Vienna Zoo. A small ceremony to mark the occasion was held at the newly-reopened zoo.

<p>The four-month-old calf was rescued from a hunter's snare trap in the forest of Myanmar's southwest Ayeyarwaddy region last month and is now being looked after by staff at the Wingabaw elephant sanctuary, an hour's drive northeast of Yangon.</p>

<p>"When she arrived at the camp last month, her leg was terribly sore", said Than Naing Oo, the camp veterinarian, as he cleaned the injury.</p>

<p>"Now she is getting better as we treat her with medicine twice a day."</p>

<p>Than Naing Oo said Ayeyar Sein's parents were nowhere to be seen near the trap and were most likely killed by poachers.</p>

<p>Poachers kill elephants for their tusks and skin, which are used to make jewellery and traditional medicine, among other things.</p>

<p>"The big challenge for us in taking care of baby elephants is to keep them alive", said Shwe Yi Win Htet, manager at the camp, adding that two young elephants had died in their care.</p>

<p>"They do not have mothers to feed them and are instead fed with powdered milk. That's why all of us are looking after them very carefully. Our priority is to prolong their lives", she said.</p>

<p>Officials named the four-month-old calf Ayeyar Sein in accordance with the tradition of giving orphans the first name of the state where they are found.</p>

<p>Wingabaw elephant camp is a government-owned shelter and 20 elephants rescued from similar situations are currently kept there.</p>

<p>Eight are orphaned baby elephants.</p>
