Ayurveda considers Nidra (sleep) as one of the three pillars of health, alongside Ahara (food) and Brahmacharya (code of conduct for energy management). Sleep is essential to ensure good health and well-being. It provides the basic strong resistance to combat minor diseases and imbalances on a long-term basis.

An important function of sleep is the enhancement of Ojas (vital energy) the master coordinator between mind, body and soul. Ojus being the fine product of digestion and a life-supporting element, helps to insulate the mind from daily stress and exertion. The quality and quantity of sleep, therefore, need to be balanced, so as to enable effective functioning and it is necessary to disconnect the mind from the senses. Although people have acknowledged the importance of good diet and exercise, they tend to ignore the importance of sleep, which in turn can have drastic consequences on one's health.

For this, the elements of sleep that play a major role in getting perfect sleep need to be understood and practised. The right breathing pattern, snoring, the right posture, setting up a daily evening routine and creating a conducive physical environment are some of the key elements.

An ideal position and posture are crucial to getting good sleep. According to Ayurveda sleeping on your left side is very beneficial as it improves circulation and promotes digestion and cardiac functions.

Ayurveda also recommends sleeping on the left side, as it is believed to help one breathe properly while supporting body functions well.

For quality sleep, getting the right breathing pattern is essential.

Ayurveda says that sleeping immediately after a long and hectic day can lead to snoring. Regular snoring meanwhile indicates that you are not getting enough oxygen for the repair of the wear and tear of bodily tissues. To counter this, Ayurveda promotes Abhyanga (oil massage), Padabhyanga (feet massage) and Nasya karma (drops of medicated oil in the nostrils) as a solution for such issues.

The WHO chief had landed in Gujarat on Monday on a three-day visit.&nbsp;

PM Modi along with the WHO chief and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth had attended the ground-breaking ceremony at Jamnagar.

"The WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine is a recognition of India`s contribution and potential in this field. WHO, via this Centre of traditional medicine, has done a new partnership with India," PM Modi said during the ceremony.

"About five decades ago, Jamnagar established the world's first Ayurveda based University. It is named the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda. Jamnagar`s contributions towards wellness will get a global identity with WHO's Global Centre for Traditional Medicine," India's prime minister added.&nbsp;

Tedros along with PM Modi will be inaugurating the Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The most common tests for COVID-19 like Procalcitonin, RT-PCR, C reactive protein, etc are exhibiting 20-60 per cent improvement after the patients undergoing nature-based treatments, as opposed to the more common medications.

COVID-19 causes a range of symptoms, some minor like body ache, dry cough, headaches to more serious symptoms like shortness of breath and difficulty in speaking. The Ayurvedic mode of treatment was also able to relieve such symptoms a lot quickly.

"We have formulated medicine from an extract of herbs. It is very effective to cure any type of viral fever," said Dr Veni.

The Siddha doctor claimed that the medicine formulated by him along with his team treats infections caused by the virus within 24 hours to 40 hours.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar said that the state is "well prepared and is taking all precautionary and preventive steps" to tackle any possible infections. "So far, no case has been identified in the state as well as the country. I appeal to the public to not panic," he added.

He underlined that yoga is immensely popular in Iceland, saying that the people of the tiny Nordic country understand the value of living in harmony with nature and oneself which are basic to the exercise.

The President called upon the Indian community to make efforts to promote Ayurveda and traditional knowledge system across the world.

Expressing happiness that Hindi would be now taught at the University of Iceland, Kovind said that the move would strengthen cultural understanding between the two countries.

Highlighting the initiatives done by the government, Kovind said, "We have set a target to become a five trillion-dollar economy by 2025. Through Jal Jeevan Abhiyaan, we are working to provide clean tap drinking water to every rural household by 2024."

The Ayushman Bharat scheme is providing health benefits to approximately 500 million people. We are committed to sourcing 175 GW of electricity from renewable sources by 2022 and we are well on our way to achieve this goal," he added.

He will address the India-Iceland Business Forum on September 11. He will also deliver a lecture at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik on 'India-Iceland partnership towards making a greener planet'.

Ahead of World Cancer Day on February 4, the founder of Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment Hospital, located in West Punjabi Bagh area, said the facility raises awareness on combating the disease and many patients help in spreading its name through word of mouth as well.

"Many patients come to us after having lost all hope in allopathic treatment. We use a four-pronged approach -- lifestyle and food habit changes, ayurvedic medicines and yoga," its founder-president Atul Singhal said.

Asked about the efficacy of ayurvedic medicine on cancer, he said, "Our patients are our biggest testimonies. They feel the benefit and tell it to others, or make videos and post those online."

"For medicine, we use 'panchgavyas', mixture of five products of cow, and we use yoga to aid in recovering.

"We change their lifestyle and food habits and ask them to forego some of them for treatment. So, instead of wheat we tell them to eat barley, black pepper instead of red chilli, jaggery instead of sugar, etc," Singhal said.

The 52-year-old said he started the facility after losing his mother to cancer in 2011.

"My mother battled cancer for three years and finally succumbed to it. So, I wanted to do something about it and I have faith in our ancient medicinal system of ayurveda. So, in 2013, we first started Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment and Research Centre which became Ayurvedic Cancer Treatment Hospital in 2015," he said.

Run by a trust, the 20-bed facility has three permanent 'vaidyas' (doctors) and a staff of about 15 people for other ancillary jobs, Singhal said.

"Irrespective of a patient or his other family's economic status, we offer treatment based on just a token sum of Rs 11,000. If a patient is poor, we ask for less amount or none if they are very poor. Our idea is to keep it a charitable cause and not a commercial one," Singhal said.

The founder of the hospital said, the facility is run under a trust which has 21 trustees, including members from well-known trading families.

"We also get funds from philanthropists and some patients, after treatment, or their family members give some endowment which helps in running the hospital," he said.

Singhal said patients come from all parts of the country, especially from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and even Jammu and Kashmir. He claimed that some patients also come from abroad.

He said the token sum is applicable for 11 days only, and after that Rs 1,000 is charged per day, as the number of beds are limited beds.

"We are planning to expand and make it a 100-bed facility," Singhal said, adding, two union ministers have visited the facility so far.

World Cancer Day, organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and celebrated each year on February 4, is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer.

"Various methodologies are prevalent in medical treatment today. Earlier, people used to rely on direct experience. But now there is a system in place wherein documentation is done and research is conducted. There is a research methodology....a system of methodology has to be approved, which should be pursued by the practitioners of Ayurveda," said the RSS chief.

Acknowledging efforts being made in this regard, Bhagwat demanded that the pace is increased.

"There is a need to make the study of Ayurveda and its application more relevant as per the research methodology prevalent in the present system," he said.

Bhagwat said, "A common medical practitioner keeps records of his observations and experience, and writes papers on them. These papers are then published in (science) journals, on the basis of which experiments are conducted. Good record keeping of Ayurveda is the need of the hour".

He said an Ayurveda practitioner, apart from knowing the ancient science in detail, must also be aware of current trends.
