Veteran BJP leader LK Advani on Saturday 'wholeheartedly' welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict in Ram Janmabhhomi-Babri Masjid case, saying the ruling has paved the way for the construction of a magnificent temple for Lord Ram at Ayodhya.

"I join all my countrymen in wholeheartedly welcoming the historic judgement delivered by the five-member Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court today in the Ayodhya matter," said Advani in a statement.

"I stand vindicated, and feel deeply blessed that the Supreme Court has given its unanimous verdict paving the way for the construction of a magnificent temple for Lord Ram at Ram Janmabhhomi in Ayodhya," he added.

"This is a moment of fulfilment for me because god almighty had given me an opportunity to make my own humble contribution to the mass movement, the biggest since India's freedom movement, aimed at the outcome which the Supreme Court's verdict today has made possible," said the former Deputy Prime Minister.

Stating that Ram and 'Ramayana' occupy an 'esteemed' place in India's cultural and civilisational heritage, the BJP leader said that it is gratifying that their belief and sentiments have been respected.

Advani also welcomed the apex court's decision that five acres of land be given at a prominent place for the building of a mosque in Ayodhya.

"Today's judgement is the culmination of a long and contentious process that played itself out in various forums - both judicial and non-judicial - in the past many decades. Now that the prolonged Mandir-Masjid dispute in Ayodhya has come to an end. The time has come to leave all contention and acrimony behind and embrace communal concord and peace," he said.

The BJP leader also appealed to all sections of the diverse society to work together to strengthen India's national unity and integrity.

"In the course of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, I had often stated that the true purpose of constructing a Ram Mandir at Ayodhya is to construct a magnificent Rashtra Mandir - building India as a strong, prosperous, peaceful and harmonious nation with justice for all and exclusion of none. Let us rededicate ourselves to that noble mission today," the statement further quoted Advani, as saying.

The Supreme Court on Saturday directed the Central government to hand over the disputed site at Ayodhya for the construction of a temple and set up a trust for this purpose.

The apex court further directed the government to give a suitable plot of land measuring five acres to the Sunni Waqf Board.

A five-judge constitution bench presided by Chief Justice Gogoi and comprising Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer passed the order on a batch of petitions against an order of the Allahabad High Court which trifurcated the site among Ramlalla Virajman, Sunni Central Waqf Board and Nirmohi Akhara.

Though the Ayodhya dispute has always been treated as a land suit both between the two parties, the Supreme Court of India in its wisdom ensured that faith and belief of millions of Indians is respected and not disregarded as superstition. The court must be lauded for it.

The order of the Supreme Court did not delegitimise the issue of faith and belief by measuring it on the scale of historicity and scientific evidence. Indian belief system and traditional knowledge went through a process of de-hierarchization under the colonial rule. The scientific and industrial revolution which changed the global landscape also pushed traditional practice and wisdom as myths and poor forms of knowledge.

The best example is that of yoga which had to reinvent itself in the language of modern science. People who practiced it called it scientific in nature to sell it to the modern world. The same was the case with Ayurveda.

In the case of Ayodhya, the absence of strong historicity of the material was used as an evidence against the idea of Ram’s birthplace. The debate was put forth in the light of liberal vs conservative or progressive vs communal elements of the society.

Those who professed faith in it believed in the birthplace of Lord Ram but were seen a the enemy of the Indian Constitution.

This binary was broken by the Supreme Court where it acknowledged the importance of faith in its decisionmaking process. Hinduism is an ancient religion and it cannot be compelled to prove historicity in the context of Islam, Sikhism, Judaism or even Christianity. It was the absence of this material historicity and violence of 1947 that complicated the case for a temple in Ayodhya.

It is time that Indian liberals get over the violence of partition and stop portraying practicing Hindus as next door communal hooligans. They should stop imitating the French experience of secularism. Indian plurality cannot be forced to mimic western expectations. Very few people remember that Indira Gandhi during the emergency without any debate added words like secularism and socialism to the Indian constitution. Was India less secular or plural in 1952? That is a different debate altogether but the fact is that virtue was made of secularism by Congress for political ends.

Religious morality forms the bedrock of Indian cultural experience. Ramayana and Mahabharata form the arch of the ethical ecosystem of the Indian civilization. It is not to say that other religions have to adhere to this ethical overview but it cannot also be disregarded for the sake of new world secularism.

It cannot be set aside at the altar of secularism. The destruction of Hindu temples in medieval India remains a fact. It should be acknowledged and life should move on. The obfuscation of history and denial makes the matter more complicated. Even the UPA had to bow down to the public sentiment when it had to withdraw its affidavit on Ram Sethu in the Supreme Court. The first affidavit mentioned Lord Ram as a mythological figure. The public outrage led to the withdrawal of the affidavit.

Since then dredging of Ram Sethu or Adam’s bridge has not taken place. It is for this reason, the Ayodhya verdict is the step in the right direction. It acknowledges the importance of faith and belief of millions of Indians. The verdict also mentions the destruction of the mosque. The top court called it an act of vandalism but in the end, acknowledged the essence of the contention and that being faith of millions of Indians cannot be disregarded.

It is time to accept the verdict and move forward.

PM Modi on SC verdict over Ayodhya dispute: Today's day marked as the 'Day of New India'

The Supreme Court in its historic judgment on Saturday called the judgment of the Allahabad High Court in Ayodhya land title dispute case, which had trifurcated 2.77 acres of the contested area between three parties in 2010, 'legally unsustainable'.

Passing a unanimous verdict on the case, a five-judge constitution bench of the apex court presided by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi ruled, "The three-way bifurcation by the High Court was legally unsustainable. The solution which commended itself to the High Court is not feasible. Dividing the land will not subserve the interest of either of the parties or secure a lasting sense of peace and tranquillity."

A 1045-page judgment came on a batch of petitions challenging the 2010 verdict of the Allahabad High Court.

The bench also comprising Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer directed the central government to form a trust to monitor the construction of a temple at the contested site and also directed that a five-acre plot to be allotted to Sunni Waqf Board for construction of a mosque.

The apex court said that no evidence was offered by the Muslim parties to indicate that they were in exclusive possession of the inner structure of the Mosque's dome.

It, however, said that there is evidence to indicate that namaz was offered within its precincts. The court added that there is "clear evidence" to establish that the Hindus worshiped in the outer courtyard.

"As regards to the inner courtyard, there is evidence on a preponderance of probabilities to establish worship by the Hindus prior to the annexation of Oudh by the British in 1857," the judgment stated.

The bench said that justice would not prevail if it were to overlook the entitlement of the Muslims. It also observed that the damage to the Babri mosque in 1934, its desecration in 1949 leading to the ouster of the Muslims and the eventual destruction on 6th December 1992 constituted a serious violation of the rule of law.

"They have been deprived of the structure of the mosque through means which should not have been employed in a secular nation committed to the rule of law," the judgment stated.

The contentions of Nirmohi Akhara, which was one of the litigants in the case, of being a shebait (devotee) were also rejected by the court.

It, however, asked the Central government to give it an appropriate role of management in the trust formed by the government to oversee the temple construction. The legal battle between the two parties dates back to the British era. The first appeal was, however, filed in 1950.

70-year-old Ayodhya dispute put to rest

Ahead of the expected verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit by Supreme Court, the District Magistrate of Ayodhya has issued various directives keeping in mind the law and order situation in the district.

Ahead of the expected verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit by Supreme Court, the District Magistrate of Ayodhya has issued various directives keeping in mind the law and order situation in the district. In an order dated October 30, the District Magistrate has prohibited all persons, organisations or groups from attempting to disturb social harmony through any programs or statements. Civilians have also been barred from keeping, using or demonstrating firearms, explosives, lathi or other sharp weapons. Licensed weapons have also been banned for use and demonstration at public events. "In any public place, no person will join such a group whose motive is to participate in activities against the law," the order stated. Some other directives in the order included a ban on accumulating explosives, acid or stones, ban on the use of loudspeakers and strict action on defamatory posts against deities on social media. Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh on Sunday said that the state police is ready and if needed the National Security Act (NSA) will be imposed on elements who attempt to disrupt law and order ahead of the apex court verdict. A five-judge Supreme Court bench heard the Ayodhya case on a day-to-day basis for 40 days and reserved its verdict on October 16. The apex court is expected to deliver its verdict on a dispute over the ownership of 2.77 acres of land in Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh before November 17, when the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi retires. The Hindu parties, during the hearing, had argued that the entire 2.77 acres of land is the birthplace or "janm sthan" of Lord Ram while the Muslim parties claimed the title over the land, saying Muslims had ownership of the land since 1528 when the mosque was built.
