These injuries happen despite the athletes taking good care of their body, having a custom-made training regimen and everything else possible to maximise the potential. The anatomy of a leg is divided into three parts: A joint which is knee, femur and tibia bones (thigh and shin, respectively), and third is a set of muscles - quadriceps and hamstrings at front and back of a thigh. Now, athletes tend to focus more on muscle but what they forget to realise is that there are two S for muscles - Stretching and Strengthening," said Dr. Mehta.</p><p>"The warm-up before playing any sport covers stretching but strength is required as well. The physios and coaches put more focus on stretching and not as much on strengthening. And, even if they are focusing on strengthening, it is often not in proportion to the anatomy of the athlete.</p><p>"For example, a wide pelvis of an athlete puts weight on knee at a different angle than an athlete with narrow pelvis. So, the first thing is to get the whole lower limb x-ray done and see where the weight bearing axis is and then plan the muscle stretching and strengthening program for that athlete which is different for each individual.</p><p>"For quads and hams, athlete focus on the muscle more and tend to neglect bone and the joint and the training session plan has to be made keeping all those things in mind. Even a slight negligence can cause an injury," he added.</p><p>Dr. Mehta also highlighted the importance of a good shoe for athletes and how it impacts as well as can prevent a potential injury and emphasised 'one size does not fit all.'</p><p>"A shoe is one of the most important thing to prevent a leg injury," he said. "One type of shoe doesn't fit all and most athletes don't understand that. Every individual has a different impression of foot arches. It is imperative to get a customised sole for the shoe or at least buy as per the foot arch impression. Till the time, shoe sole and arches are not in sync, knee will get affected during the run-up.</p><p>"The irony of the foot is that the problem of the foot gets transmitted to the knee," he added, highlighting the complex nature of human body and how a slight negligence can take a toll on athletes.</p>

<p>The steeplechaser also called out the prejudice of people who think that athletes are having a gala time while training abroad.</p>

<p>"There is no enjoyment for athletes training abroad. Some people think that we're spending government money, going on tour and having a gala time. But that's not the case. For the last four or five months, I've had to stay away from family and friends to train. You are returning from the ground at midnight and then having to cook your own food," said Sable.</p>

<p>"Some people are saying our athletes are coming last, but then we're competing against the world's best and trying hard," he added.</p>

<p>India won three medals in shooting, one in wrestling and one in hockey (all bronze) while javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra managed a silver.</p>

<p>It was Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem who won the gold this time in the javelin throw as Neeraj made only one successful attempt out of six in his gold defence from Tokyo Olympics 2020.</p>

<h2>Tajinder Toor shines in Shot Put</h2>

<p>Soon after Sable won his maiden gold medal at the Asian Games 2023, shot put thrower Tajinder Pal Singh Toor claimed his back-to-back gold medal, becoming the fourth Indian after Parduman Singh Brar (1954 and 1958), Joginder Singh (1966 and 1970) and Bahadur Singh Chouhan (1978 and 1982) to achieve this.</p>

<p>With his best throw of 20.36m in his sixth attempt, Toor breached the 20m mark and claimed the top position.</p>

<h2>Medals, medals everywhere</h2>

<p>Indian runners also claimed accolades in the 1500m. While Harmilan Bains won silver in the women’s 1500m, Ajay Kumar Saroj and Jinson Johnson took silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 1500m at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday. Bains completed the race in 4:12.74 time, whereas, Saroj clocked 3:38.94 and Johnson registered 3:39.74 in their event.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another medal hope in a different discipline, Murali Sreeshankar also returned with a silver medal in Men’s Long Jump event with his best jump of 8.19m but lost to China’s Wang Jianan, who won gold with an 8.22m jump.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the Women’s Discus Throw, veteran Indian Seema Punia stood third, winning the bronze medal with her best throw of 58.62m in her fourth attempt.</p>

<p>While in the Women’s Heptathlon event, Nandini Agasara won the silver medal with a personal best record.</p>

<p>India’s Jyothi Yarraji stood second in the Women’s 100m Hurdles following a false start review delaying the official declaration.&nbsp;</p>

Asian Games: Avinash Sable sets new record; Tajinder Pal Singh Toor also bags gold in shot put

<p>India's Avinash Sable has become the first track athlete from the country to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sable achieved the feat during the 3,000m steeplechase competition at the Silesia Diamond League. Sable clocked his second career-best time of 8 minutes and 11.63 seconds, beating the qualifying mark of 8:15.00 with a decent margin. His career-best is 8:11.20, which is also a national record in the event.</p>

<p>He finished sixth in the race which was won by reigning world and Olympic champion El Bakkali Soufiane in the meet record time of 8:03.16. Kenyan duo of Abraham Kibiwot (8:08.03) and Leonard Kipkemoi Bett (8:09.45) finished second and third, respectively.</p>

<p>The Olympics committee considers men's and women's race walk in road events while the long jump comes under field event, making Sable the first track athlete from the country to qualify. The Olympic qualifications began July 1, 2023, and will continue till June 30, 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 28-year-old, with his sixth-place finish in Silesia, now has seven points in the Diamond League 2023 standings, including three from his latest race. Sable is currently ninth overall in the event in three Diamond League legs he took part in. He had finished 10th during the Rabat leg and a whopping fifth in Stockholm, with the timings of 8:17.18 and 8:21.88, respectively.</p>

<p>The athletes are awarded points instead of medals at eight legs of Diamond League in the run-up to the final. Top eight finishers overall of each event after all eight legs compete in the final for the trophy. The Diamond League Final 2023 will be held in Eugene, USA on September 16 and 17.</p>

<p>India's Avinash Sable created history at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday (August 06) as he came up with one of the most memorable performances by an Indian track athlete in the history of the Games. Sable claimed the&nbsp;silver medal in men's 3000m steeplechase to bring home India's first medal in&nbsp;steeplechase in CWG history.</p>

<p>Sable was not in contention for a podium finish initially after he finished fourth in the 1,000m and the 2,000m respectively. However, he upped the ante in the final 1,000m on the track and managed to catch up with the rest of the athletes in what was a thrilling finish to the final.</p>

<p>Sable finished second in the final with the timing&nbsp;of 8:11.20 and missed out the gold medal by a whisker against Kenya's Abraham Kibiwot, who finished on top of the podium with the timing&nbsp;of 8:11.15. Kenya's Amos Serem won the bronze medal as he finished third with the timing of 8:16.83.&nbsp;</p>
