Antonio Conte praised his Tottenham Hotspur side's ability to turn defence into attack as they shrugged off a dreadful recent run to stun Premier League leaders Manchester City with a Harry Kane-inspired 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

After three successive league defeats, Tottenham's top-four ambitions were fading and Conte's honeymoon period since taking charge in November was well and truly over.

But the Italian, who has been under the spotlight all week after an interview in which he appeared to suggest Tottenham had been left weakened in the transfer window, masterminded the "perfect game" to stop the Man City juggernaut.

Tottenham only had 28% of possession against City, but defended diligently and somehow always looked a threat on the counter-attack with Kane, who scored twice including the 96th minute winner, linking superbly with Son Heung-min.

City had made it 2-2 in stoppage time through Riyad Mahrez's penalty, and it looked likely that the leaders would even snatch a last-gasp win, but Tottenham had other ideas as they revived their hopes of challenging for the top four.

"You know when you play Manchester City you will concede 70% of possession. But I say to my players that when you are defending, in your mind you must always be attacking. In your mind you want to win the ball and attack," Conte, who had not lost three league games in a row as manager for 12 years, said.

"To have this thought, in the final minutes, their goal could have killed you. Instead my players wanted to win.

"I think in every moment of the game my team wanted to attack them. Every time we had the ball I was thinking we could hurt them."

The surprise win lifted Tottenham back into seventh spot and with games in hand over the likes of West Ham United and Manchester United, they are back in the hunt for the top four.

But Conte knows that one big result will be pointless unless they can produce a much higher level of consistency.

"This win has to give us confidence, to trust the work we are doing together," the former Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan boss said. "But this is a process."

January signing Dejan Kulusevski, handed his first Premier League start, scored Tottenham's opening goal and impressed along with fellow new signing Rodrigo Bentancur.

But it was the old combo of Kane and Son Heung-min which really tormented City. Son set up Kane's first goal, the 36th time they have combined for a Premier League goal, equalling the record of Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard for Chelsea.

"To speak about only one player is difficult for me. They made a fantastic performance," Conte said.

Leave Ukraine within 48 hours as a Russian attack could come at any time, the White House told Americans on Friday. It said that the war could start with an air assault.

This comes as Russia has accused Western nations of lying to distract from own aggressive acts.

Jostling for influence in Europe, the Kremlin has rejected a joint Western diplomatic response as disrespectful.

"The risk is now high enough and the threat is now immediate enough. If a Russian attack on Ukraine proceeds, it is likely to begin with aerial bombing and missile attacks that could obviously kill civilians without regard to their nationality," White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters.

As per US intelligence, a rapid assault on Kyiv can come and Russian President Vladimir Putin could also order an invasion before the Winter Olympics ends, Sullivan said.

Russia's Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy looked to mock Sullivan's comments a little later and said on Twitter, "Some reasonable people were hoping US-fanned hysteria was waning. Maybe they put a jinx on it, because scaremongers have clearly got second wind. Our troops are still on our territory and I wonder if the US will invade Ukraine itself - someone has to, after such a panic campaign."

Washington is also looking to send 3,000 extra troops to Poland in near future to try and help reassure NATO allies, four US officials told Reuters. They will be in addition to 8,500, who are already on alert for deployment to Europe if needed.

If a Russian attack on Ukraine proceeds, it is likely to begin with aerial bombing and missile attacks that could obviously kill civilians without regard to their nationality," White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters. Our troops are still on our territory and I wonder if the US will invade Ukraine itself - someone has to, after such a panic campaign." Washington is also looking to send 3,000 extra troops to Poland in near future to try and help reassure NATO allies, four US officials told Reuters. They will be in addition to 8,500, who are already on alert for deployment to Europe if needed. (With inputs from agencies)

In a shocking move, the Republican party of the United States has officially termed former President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn his 2020 election loss and the attack on the Capitol as “legitimate political discourse”.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is holding its winter meetings in Salt Lake City as part of the formal censure of Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who are the only Republicans on the January 6 committee.

The Indian envoy said that New Delhi "stands in solidarity with UAE and extends its support for an unequivocal condemnation of this attack by the Council".

He highlighted that it is "important that the Council stands united in sending a clear signal against such acts of terror."

A relatively docile animal, with sparse history of violent behaviour, has caused trauma for a British man who claimed that he was attacked by a “swarm of” otters when he was out for a morning walk in a botanical garden in Singapore.

Graham George Spencer, a British citizen living in Singapore, told The Straits Times newspaper that he was chased, pinned down and bitten “26 times in 10 seconds” by a family of 20 otters.

“I actually thought I was going to die,” said Spencer, who lives in Singapore and is reportedly in his sixties.

He claimed that the animals were provoked by a runner, who may not have spotted them as it was still early morning.

“Because it was very dark, he never saw them. And he just ran straight into them. And he was treading on them," Spencer told a local outlet, Mothership.sg.

Spencer said the otters bit his ankles and he fell to the ground. They then started biting his legs and buttocks, and one bit his finger as he put his hands up to shield his face.

His friend managed to ward the creatures off by screaming at them, he said. The pair were then chased by the otters as they tried to seek help from a visitors' centre.

Spencer said that he needed stitches for some of his 26 wounds and was given a tetanus injection and antibiotics.

Staff at the park where Spencer was attacked told him that the incident is “under investigation”, he said.

The island is believed to be home to 10 families of otters, or about 90 in total, according to reports.

Although they seem benign, they do have a history of attacking people. As recently as May, a 77-year-old man was reportedly bitten by an otter on the leg while exercising near the Kallang River in Singapore.

According to the Washington Post, river otters were once driven away by pollution in the 1970s, but have since returned as the country’s waterways have been cleaned up in recent years.

The animals are common sights in hospital lobbies and condominium pools, and have even been seen drinking from public fountains.

The second most senior US general, John Hyten, has said the hypersonic missile tested by China this summer "went around the world", and warned that China might one day be capable of launching a surprise nuclear attack on the US.

He said, "They launched a long-range missile. It went around the world, dropped off a hypersonic glide vehicle that glided all the way back to China, that impacted a target in China."

When asked about the missile hitting the target, Hyten told CBS News: "Close enough."

Hyten said, "Why are they building all of this capability? They look like a first-use weapon. That's what those weapons look like to me."

China has denied that it has tested hypersonic weapons. The pace with which the Chinese have developed their system has surprised US national security officials.

Hyten, outgoing vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had previously deemed China's developing pace as "stunning."

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping opened a virtual summit. This was done with the aim of more communication between the superpowers and "guardrails" to prevent a conflict.

Biden said they must create "guardrails" so that the competition between the two countries does not veer into conflict, whether intended or unintended. They would have a "candid" discussion, he added.

Referring to Biden as his "old friend," Beijing's Xi said the rivals must work more closely. "China and the United States need to increase communication and cooperation," he said.

If a new study is to be believed, bees scream when they are under attack by giant “murder” hornets.

This new defence mechanism was revealed by a study published in the Royal Society Open Science journal this week.

If left unchecked, the giant Asian hornets can completely destroy a honeybee hive in hours. In what scientists call a “slaughter phase”, they feed on larvae and decapitate bees. The hornets later also feed severed body parts to their young.

As per the research, the bees release a “rallying call for collective defence” against the hornets.

The signal, which was previously undiscovered, is now known as an “anti-predator pipe, shares acoustic traits with alarm shrieks, fear screams and panic calls of primates, birds and meerkats,” said the study.

The bees produce the sound by vibrating their wings or thorax. It also elevates their abdomens and exposes a gland to release a pheromone.

Heather Mattila, a co-author of the study, told Gizmodo, “It’s alarming to hear. It’s characterised by rapid bursts of high-pitched sounds that change unpredictably in frequency – they’re quite harsh and noisy.”

During a hornet attack, signal rates increase seven- to eight-fold, shared the study.
