"There was a lack of concentration, individual errors," admitted Xavi.

"It's a game of errors and we are not minimising them."

After Barcelona's recent humbling by Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final Xavi admitted the team needs to win a trophy this season.

Eight points off the top in La Liga, the record 31-time Copa del Rey winners saw the cup as an accessible route to silverware.

In their way were former Barca coach Ernesto Valverde and his Athletic side, 23-time cup champions, behind only the Catalans, featuring the inspired Williams brothers.

"The fact Inaki was here was a huge morale boost," Valverde told TVE.

Unfit Lionel Messi ruled out of season opener against Bilbao

Barcelona's opening match of their La Liga title defence at Athletic Bilbao will take place next Friday after a judge ruled that matches could be played on that day but not on Mondays.

The decision from a court in Madrid means matches scheduled for Fridays in the opening three rounds, which were announced at the start of July, can be played, while matches planned for Mondays will have to be reorganised.

But La Liga has announced it will appeal the ruling as it aims for both Friday and Monday matches to be allowed this season.

"While the ruling has partially respected La Liga's requests with regards to interim measures, this organisation ... does not agree with the ruling and will proceed to exercise its right to appeal the decision," La Liga said in a statement.

Bilbao will host Barca at 9pm local time (1900 GMT) at San Mames stadium on August 16.

A thigh injury had limited Messi to 27 minutes against Real Madrid on Wednesday and while he played the full match at San Mames, Barca's assistant coach Jon Aspiazu had admitted before kick-off he was not yet 100 per cent.&nbsp;

In all likelihood, he stayed on because his team needed him but Messi was not at his best and neither were Barcelona, who would even have lost had it not been for Marc Andre Ter Stegen's stunning late save to deny Inaki Williams.&nbsp;

"He saved us," coach Ernesto Valverde said. "It was a great stop."

The draw makes it three games without a win for La Liga's leaders, whose advantage is still six points but now with Real Madrid their closest challengers, after they beat Atletico on Saturday.&nbsp;

"We were first last week and we are still first, and if my maths is right, we will be again next week," Valverde said.

But Real's victory at the Wanda Metropolitano was their fifth on the bounce and just as they have gained momentum, Barca appears to be losing theirs, at a crucial juncture, with more stern tests to come.&nbsp;

After Real Valladolid at home next weekend, Valverde's side travel to Lyon in the Champions League and Sevilla in the league. They then face two Clasicos in four days, one in the Copa del Rey, and both at the Santiago Bernabeu.
