Google officially launched its artificial intelligence chatbot, called Bard, to take on rival Open AI’s ChatGPT, which is backed by Microsoft.

At an annual Google developers conference in Silicon Valley on Thursday, the tech giant announced that its new tool will be rolled out in over 180 countries.

Google said that its AI chatbot has been imbibed into 25 products, including Maps and Gmail, and will let users&nbsp;write mail responses with the help of Bard.

"Seven years into our journey as an AI-first company, we are at an exciting inflection point," Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, told thousands of developers gathered for the event.

"With generative AI, we're taking the next step, with a bold and responsible approach, we are reimagining all of our products."

However, one noticeable key decision Google has taken differently than Microsoft is that unlike ChatGPT which is ingrained into Bing search, Bard chatbot will not be included in the Google search.

How Bard is different from ChatGPT

The tech firm said that its traditional Google search will still be used for finding and seeking information, such as locating something to purchase.

Whereas Bard AI chatbot, which has a persona that can hold human-like conversations, will be used for “creative collaboration” for instance, to generate software code or write a caption for a photo.

Google's AI chatbot Bard to be rolled out in 180 countries including India

The man generally called the “Godfather of artificial intelligence", Dr Geoffrey Hinton, has said that he will respond to the requests received from Twitter CEO Elon Musk, the White House and politician Bernie Sanders, days after he quit Google and warned the world about the risk that AI carries with itself. 
 
Dr Hinton, 75, was given the Turing Award,&nbsp;the highest honour of computer science, in 2018 for his work on “deep learning”, along with the University of Montreal’s Yoshua Bengio and Meta’s Yann Lecun. 
 
The technology behind the AI revolution has emerged from the efforts of Dr Hinton to understand the human brain. However, the computer scientist may not give the advice that the world leaders want to hear.

“The US government inevitably has a lot of concerns around national security. And I tend to disagree with them. For example, I’m sure that the defence department considers that the only safe hands for this stuff is the US defence department – the only group of people to actually use nuclear weapons,” he said while speaking to The Guardian. 
 
“I’m a socialist. I think that private ownership of the media, and of the ‘means of computation’, is not good,” Hinton added. 
 
“If you view what Google is doing in the context of a capitalist system, it’s behaving as responsibly as you could expect it to do. But that doesn’t mean it’s trying to maximise utility for all people: it’s legally obliged to maximise utility for its shareholders, and that’s a very different thing,” he said. 
 
Since Hinton spoke on Monday about the fears of AI which can end the civilisation in 20 years, he has been receiving new requests to talk every two minutes. 
 
However, he has not been able to offer a piece of concrete advice. “I’m not a policy guy. I’m just someone who’s suddenly become aware that there’s a danger of something really bad happening. I wish I had a nice solution, like: ‘Just stop burning carbon, and you’ll be OK.’ But I can’t see a simple solution like that,” he said. 
 
Artificial intelligence's rapid progress in the past year has made Dr Hinton talk about&nbsp;the threat that digital intelligence carries. 
 
“For the last 50 years, I’ve been trying to make computer models that can learn stuff a bit like the way the brain learns it, in order to understand better how the brain is learning things. But very recently, I decided that maybe these big models are actually much better than the brain,” the godfather of AI said.

“You need to imagine something that is more intelligent than us by the same degree that we are more intelligent than a frog. It’s all very well to say: ‘Well, don’t connect them to the internet,’ but as long as they’re talking to us, they can make us do things,” he warned.

A video doing the rounds on social media can be proof to it.&nbsp;On Sunday (April 23), the&nbsp;video appeared on Weibo showing a woman&nbsp;aggressively bashing a hospital robot with a club inside the lobby of the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University in Jiangsu Province's Xuzhou, as reported&nbsp;by&nbsp;Jiangxi Morning News.

According to the agency, the hospital's initial evaluation said&nbsp;the woman was suffering from a mental illness.

A hospital employee cited by&nbsp;Boiling Point Video said&nbsp;that&nbsp;the reasons for her behaviour are unknown, and the hospital's security department and information office were in contact with the individual involved. It also reported that police have joined the inquiry.

Dictatorships and authoritarian regimes lag behind more democratic and inclusive nations in nurturing cutting-edge, creative technology such as robotics and clean energy.&nbsp;Because of competing interests, artificial intelligence may be an exception, at least in China, as per The Harvard Gazette.&nbsp;

At a recent dean's conference on social science insights into the emergent global power, Harvard Economics Professor David Yang discussed the outsized success of China's AI sector. He highlighted a recent US&nbsp;government list of companies generating the highest accurate facial recognition technology as evidence. The top five were all Chinese firms.

“Autocratic governments would like to be able to predict the whereabouts, thoughts, and behaviors of citizens,” Yang said. “And AI is fundamentally a technology for prediction.” This creates an alignment of purpose between AI technology and autocratic rulers, he argued.

Because AI relies significantly on data, and autocratic governments are known to gather vast amounts of it, this benefits companies with Chinese government contracts, who may then use official data to enhance commercial ventures, he noted.

Students performed better on accounting exams than ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI, according to research.&nbsp;Despite this, they praised ChatGPT, calling its performance "impressive" and a "game changer that will change the way everyone teaches and learns - for the better," reported PTI.&nbsp;

In a bid to determine how well OpenAI's technology will do on accounting examinations, researchers from Brigham Young University (BYU), US, and 186 other universities conducted this study. Their research was published in the journal Issues in Accounting Education.

The average student score on the accounting exam used by the researchers was 76.7 per cent, while ChatGPT received a score of 47.3 per cent.

While ChatGPT was shown to outperform students on 11.3 per cent&nbsp;of the questions, doing particularly well on accounting information systems (AIS) and auditing, it was discovered that the AI bot performed worse on tax, financial, and managerial tests. &nbsp;The reason for this, according to researchers, may be that ChatGPT had difficulties with the mathematical operations necessary.&nbsp;

Further research revealed that the AI bot, which use machine learning to produce natural language writing, performed better on true/false and multiple-choice questions (69.5&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;right), but less well on short-answer questions (between 28.7&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;and 39.1&nbsp;per cent).

In general, the researchers found that ChatGPT had difficulty responding to higher-order questions. &nbsp;In fact, it was discovered that ChatGPT occasionally offered binding written justifications for wrong responses or offered multiple approaches to the same subject matter.&nbsp;

Importantly, researchers discovered that ChatGPT occasionally made-up facts. For instance, when providing a reference, it generated a reference that appeared authentic but was entirely false. &nbsp;Sometimes neither the work nor its authors were even real.

The image captured by the Event Horizons Telescope (EHT) in 2019 revealed a blurry, red-orange fiery, doughnut-shaped object. The updated picture using AI has been published in the&nbsp;Astrophysical Journal Letters which shows the same shape of the black hole, albeit with a much sharper resolution. Meaning, the ring around the black hole appears skinnier and centre, much 'darker'.&nbsp;

To provide a better image, the scientists used PRIMO, a dictionary-learning-based algorithm that used simulations of the accretion disk as a training set.&nbsp;

"By learning the correlations between the different regions of the space of interferometric data, this approach allows us to recover high-fidelity images even in the presence of sparse coverage and reach the nominal resolution of the EHT array," stated the new research.

<h2>AI filled the gaps&nbsp;</h2>

When the image was released in 2019, it was a monumental feat, for it was the first time humanity had seen what an actual black hole looked like. It was made using the EHT which employs&nbsp;numerous synchronized radio telescopes situated across the planet, forming one giant telescope, roughly the size of the Earth.

However, despite an Earth-sized telescope working night and day, gaps remained in the data. The scientists using AI relied on the same data but filled the gaps using machine learning.&nbsp;

Both images of the black holes were similar but the scientists said capturing&nbsp;Sgr A* was much more difficult.&nbsp;

“The gas in the vicinity of the black holes moves at the same speed — nearly as fast as light —&nbsp;around both Sgr A* and M87*. But where gas takes days to weeks to orbit the larger M87*, in the much smaller Sgr A* it completes an orbit in mere minutes. This means the brightness and pattern of the gas around Sgr A* was changing rapidly as the EHT Collaboration was observing it — a bit like trying to take a clear picture of a puppy quickly chasing its tail," said&nbsp;EHT scientist Chi-kwan (‘CK’) Chan.&nbsp;

Most black holes are formed when stars reach the end of their lives. While a significant number of stars inflate to become red giants, they later cool down to&nbsp;metamorphose into a white dwarf. However, those much bigger than our solar system's star (10 to 20 times massive) become super-dense neutron stars or so-called stellar-mass black holes.
