NASA has started preparations for the Artemis 2 mission, with a "wet rehearsal" scheduled for February 2. The space agency will conduct a mission countdown simulation, during which it will perform a critical fueling test for the Space Launch System rocket ahead of the actual launch. While the actual fuelling test takes place on Monday, work began at approximately 8 pm ET on January 31. This is because launch flight controllers and pad engineers are required to take control of their stations 49 hours before the T-0 "launch" time scheduled for 9 pm ET on Monday. The wet dress rehearsal was earlier scheduled to start on the night of January 29, but was delayed because of cold weather. This is the last major test SLS has to pass before a crew of four astronauts takes off for the Moon for the first time in over 50 years. However, the two-day delay in the simulation has also led to the actual launch being pushed forward by two days. Instead of the original date of February 6, the rocket will now be launched no earlier than February 8.Also Read: Artemis II launch date announced: Humanity returns to the Moon after 53 years
Artemis 2 launch window and astronauts
The first launch window for Artemis 2 starts February 8 and will last until February 11. Artemis 2 wet launch begins at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center: Launch date, astronauts and other details

NASA is set to send a crewed mission to the Moon for the first time in over 50 years. Artemis 2 is expected to take flight on February 6 this year, sending four astronauts outside low Earth orbit and into space. The Artemis 2 team is taking with it some priceless items linked to America's space journey, NASA announced. Several artefacts will be placed on the Orion spacecraft that will celebrate the American space agency's work in the field. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said in a statement, "This mission will bring together pieces of our earliest achievements in aviation, defining moments from human spaceflight, and symbols of where we’re headed next." He added, "Orion will carry astronauts around the Moon while also carrying our history forward into the next chapter beyond Earth." One of the artefacts on the Artemis 2 flight kit will be from the first powered flight performed by the Wright brothers in 1903. It is one square inch of muslin fabric from the original Wright Flyer. This aircraft was the world’s first powered flying machine. The fabric has been loaned by the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. A smaller piece of the fabric was launched into space in 1985 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery. Artemis 2 will also carry a small American flag that has been on previous missions. It was on STS-1, the first shuttle mission, and then STS-135, the last shuttle mission. NASA’s first crewed test flight of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft also took the same flag to space. Also Read: Artemis II launch date announced: Humanity returns to the Moon after 53 years
American flag in space
An American flag that was scheduled to fly into space as part of the Apollo 18 mission in 1970 will finally take the much-awaited trip. The mission never took off, and it was never out on any other spacecraft as well. An artefact from the 1964 Ranger 7 mission, which led NASA to make its first successful contact with the lunar surface after 13 failed attempts, will also be part of the kit. Ranger 7 returned 4,300 images of the lunar surface back to Earth, and a copy of one of the photo negatives from it will be added to the Artemis 2 kit. The SLS and Orion spacecraft rolled onto NASA’s Kennedy Space Center launchpad on January 1,7 and final preparations are underway before the bid day.

NASA unveiled the names of its four astronauts on Monday that will go on the Artemis II mission. Its lunar mission of NASA will take off in November 2024 and the training for the same will begin this year. The astronauts are NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency.

“We’re going”, said NASA administrator and former astronaut Bill Nelson as he began his address during the space agency’s announcement of the four astronauts. The unveiling event was live-streamed on NASA’s website on Monday.

“We will unlock new knowledge and understanding. We have always dreamed about what more is ahead. Why? Because it is in our DNA. It is part of us. It is who we are, as adventurers, as explorers, as frontiers people,” added Nelson.

Apart from being an engineer, Glover holds a certificate in space systems from the Naval Postgraduate School, as well as a certificate in legislative studies from Georgetown University.

3. Reid Wiseman

Reid Wiseman will be the commander of the Artemis II mission, Wiseman previously lived and worked on the International Space Station in 2014. Before that, he commanded the undersea research mission NEEMO21, a 16-day underwater mission that simulated space exploration. He also served as chief of NASA’s Astronaut Office in the past.

Hansen was the pilot of the CF-118 fighter jet in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was promoted to the rank of colonel before joining the Canadian Space Agency. He has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in space science with First Class Honours from the Royal Military College in Ontario. He is also a Master of Science in Physics, with a research focus on a wide field of view satellite tracking.

NASA’s Artemis II mission

NASA’s Artemis I mission laid the foundations of its latest human exploration capabilities, which included the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, Orion spacecraft, and all associated ground systems. Artemis II will be the first crewed mission to test all of this. It will be a 10-day-long mission that will have the four astronauts flying around the Moon to test Orion and its life-support mission to ensure that it can provide a safe habitat for astronauts to live and work during deep space exploration.
