US-based iPhone maker Apple has sought incentives from the government to set up a manufacturing unit in India.&nbsp;

In a communication to the government, the Cupertino-based technology major has asked for incentives related to the Department of Revenue and Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeITY), an official told PTI.

&quot;They are doing their due diligence from quite some time. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) will write to both the departments regarding this communication for their views,&quot; the official added.

At present, to boost electronic manufacturing in the country, the government provides benefits under Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (MSIPS).

The scheme provides financial incentives to offset disability and attract investments in the electronics hardware segment. It also gives subsidy for investments in Special Economic Zones, among other benefits.

Apple&#39;s products are currently manufactured in six countries, including Korea, Japan and the US.

Apple&#39;s communication regarding setting up of a manufacturing unit assumes significance as the Finance Ministry in May had rejected relaxing the 30 per cent domestic sourcing norms, as sought by the iPhone and iPad maker as a pre-condition for bringing in FDI to set up single-brand retail stores in the country.

The company had sought exemption on the ground that it makes state-of-the-art and cutting-edge technology products for which local sourcing is not possible.

The government had also turned down the firm&#39;s proposal to import refurbished phones and sell them in India.

The company sells its products through Apple-owned retail stores in countries like China, Germany, the US, the UK and France, among others.

It has no wholly-owned store in India and sells its products through distributors such as Redington and Ingram Micro.

The government has announced incentives to promote electronic manufacturing in India and reduce the import bill.

Total import of electronics goods were valued at Rs 2.25 lakh crore in 2014-15 as against Rs 1.95 lakh crore in the previous year.&nbsp;

Apple stocks highest since December after Samsung Note 7 fire fiasco

Samsung on Tuesday announced a total halt to production of its troubled Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, citing continued safety concerns over the device exploding.

&quot;We recently readjusted the production volume for a&nbsp;thorough investigation and quality control, but putting consumer safety as top priority, we have reached a final decision to halt production of Galaxy Note 7s,&quot; the company said in a statement.

The world&rsquo;s largest seller of smartphones told its customers to stop using their Galaxy Note 7 smartphones while it investigates reports of fires in the devices.

&quot;Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device,&quot; the company said.

The company, which was banking on its flagship Note 7 to take on competitors like Apple&rsquo;s iPhone 7, hit rock bottom when reports of battery explosion began surfacing.

Samsung then initiated a global recall of at least 2.5 million devices in 10 countries in September. But with even the replacement devices reportedly catching fire Samsung might be heading towards a global scandal.

Top US and Australian carriers had suspended sales or exchange of Note 7s, after there were reports of even the replacement devices exploding.

Samsung&rsquo;s decision to pull Note 7s off the shelves for the second time in two months underscores the South Korean firm&rsquo;s struggles to fix the over-heating issue.

The premium device was launched in August but within weeks of the launch images of charred Note 7s began appearing on social media.

Edward Snyder, managing director of Charter Equity Research, told Reuters it was important to get the Note 7 off the market.

&quot;This has probably killed the Note 7 brand name, who knows if they&rsquo;ll even be allowed to re-release it,&quot; Snyder said.

&quot;By the time they fix the problem they have to go through re-certification and re-qualification and by the time that happens they&rsquo;re going up against the (Galaxy) S8 launch.&rdquo;

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said Samsung was making the right decision by halting sales and exchanges of the device.

&quot;No one should have to be concerned their phone will endanger them, their family or their property,&quot; CPSC Chairman Elliott Kaye said in a statement.

&quot;While we continue our active investigation into reports of phones overheating and burning in multiple states, consumers should power down and stop using all Galaxy Note 7s. This is the safest course of action.&rdquo;

Samsung halts production of Note 7 over safety concerns

Japanese regulators are considering taking action against Apple Inc over possible antitrust violations that may have helped it dominate the nation&#39;s smartphone sales, government sources said, a move that could hit the company&#39;s profit margins in one of its most profitable markets.

In a report published last month, Japan&#39;s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said that NTT Docomo, KDDI Corp and Softbank Group were refusing to sell older surplus iPhone models to third party retailers, thereby hobbling smaller competitors.

Apple was not named in that report, but two senior government sources told Reuters that regulators were also focusing on Apple&#39;s supply agreements with all three carriers.

Under those deals, surplus stock of older iPhones is kept out of the market and sent to overseas markets, such as Hong Kong, according to industry sources.

The carriers, locked in a costly battle to win consumers who covet iPhones, also bulk purchase the Apple smartphones and sell them at a discount, which gives the U.S. company an advantage over rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co, according to the two government officials and an industry source.

Both iPhone 7 and Samsung&#39;s Galaxy S7 edge model sell for 93,960 yen ($932) under Docomo&#39;s main service package without any contract, but the cost for the iPhone drops sharply to 38,232 yen with a two-year contract, while the Galaxy falls to 54,432 yen.

When asked about the antitrust concerns, Apple forwarded a link to a webpage published at the time of the Aug. 2 FTC report that says it has created or supports 715,000 jobs in Japan with Japanese-based developers raking in more than $9 billion in revenue from Apple apps since 2008. It did not comment further.

Largest share

The strategy has helped Apple sustain demand for new iPhones, making Japan one of its most profitable markets. The U.S. company accounts for almost one in every two smartphones sold in Japan, its largest share in a major market.

It also kept new mobile service providers such as messaging app firm Line Corp and online retailer Rakuten Inc from selling iPhones, and helped the top three carriers control more than 90 percent of the mobile phone market.

Any government order for corrective measures may crimp demand for more profitable new iPhone models that compete against well-reviewed Android phones such as the Galaxy S7.

&quot;The actions of the three operators alone do not account for the state of the market,&quot; said one of the officials, who confirmed that the August report was also directed at Apple. &quot;We are getting closer to taking action.&quot;

The officials said the watchdog hoped pressing the carriers would get them to solve the antitrust issue, which could include renegotiating contracts with Apple.

They asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

The FTC did not give a deadline or say what penalties, such as fines, it would impose if the companies did not act.

In the past, FTC has issued cease and desist orders, and imposed a &quot;surplus charge&quot; to recoup profits resulting from antitrust violations. The biggest surplus charge to date for a case, which involved five companies, is 27 billion yen ($269 million).

Fines on companies judged to be operating cartels or monopolies, however, can be higher.

NTT Docomo said it did not believe it was blocking new entrants. &quot;We have always strived to conduct sales and services appropriately and we will take the FTC&#39;s report on board and consider our response,&quot; a spokesman said.

A spokeswoman for KDDI said her company had operated its business in an appropriate manner and followed guidelines.

A Softbank spokesman also said it would work with regulators. &quot;Up to now we have never had any issues with competition laws over our sales practices and pricing,&quot; he said.

Samsung declined to comment.

"The actions of the three operators alone do not account for the state of the market," said one of the officials, who confirmed that the August report was also directed at Apple. "We are getting closer to taking action." The officials said the watchdog hoped pressing the carriers would get them to solve the antitrust issue, which could include renegotiating contracts with Apple. They asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to speak to the media. The FTC did not give a deadline or say what penalties, such as fines, it would impose if the companies did not act. In the past, FTC has issued cease and desist orders, and imposed a "surplus charge" to recoup profits resulting from antitrust violations. The biggest surplus charge to date for a case, which involved five companies, is 27 billion yen ($269 million). Fines on companies judged to be operating cartels or monopolies, however, can be higher. NTT Docomo said it did not believe it was blocking new entrants. "We have always strived to conduct sales and services appropriately and we will take the FTC's report on board and consider our response," a spokesman said. A spokeswoman for KDDI said her company had operated its business in an appropriate manner and followed guidelines. A Softbank spokesman also said it would work with regulators. "Up to now we have never had any issues with competition laws over our sales practices and pricing," he said. Samsung declined to comment. ($1 = 101.87 yen) (Reuters)

Island City, a recent Hindi movie, makes an interesting statement about the technology-driven world we inhabit. Winner of the FEDORA prize for the Best Young Director at the Venice Film Festival 2015, the film gives a sly nod to the greater-than-ever influx of technology in our lives and its ramifications.

Director Ruchika Oberoi has managed to capture the changing dynamics of human relationships and isolation vis-a-vis advanced interaction with digital products and services. The contrived mirth in the automated alerts from the &lsquo;Fun and Frolic Committee&rsquo; is grim and farcical at the same time.
&nbsp;
Whether it is Uber&#39;s plan to roll out driver-less taxis or robots replacing workers in factories across the world, human beings are being made dispensable by technology. With the launch of Apple Nike + watch last fortnight, human beings are not needed even for nagging. &quot;The Nike+ Run Club app offers daily motivation through smart run reminders, challenges from friends and even alerts informing when the weather is right to get outside&quot;, reads the description on Apple&rsquo;s website. &nbsp;If you miss a run, you get nagged by your wrist-watch instead of a running partner, physician or a family member. A recent article on the internet called the device a &quot;dystopian nagging machine&quot;. Does digital really spell dystopia?

Ashwin Mushran, Mumbai-based actor who was part of Island City, has an interesting take on this. &quot;The film engages with technology at a subliminal level. It is more about the isolation. Technology is what we make of it. There are apps and services that make lives much easier. On the other hand, there may be unhealthy dependence. The good thing is that users can control their level of engagement with technology. I can easily tweak my Facebook settings as per my privacy requirements,&quot; he says.

In the first story of the film, Mushran plays a boss straight out of a nightmare whose insistence on structure and organisation eventually leads to a catastrophic climax. The actor says, &quot;The first story could be set anywhere in the world. It is about how we are conditioned to be from anywhere. Technology brings us together but it also flattens individualism, local character. It is also about our unthinking response to technology which becomes tyrannical.&quot;

Technology aids in organisation but how far? Mushran says, &quot;I use an app to track my monthly expenditure. It is a great help to my accountant and I can manage my money better. The voracious reader in me has found salvation in Kindle. The catch lies in questioning the technology and not taking orders mindlessly. The latter comes close to living in the Nazi Germany. It will certainly spell disaster eventually. The future belongs to technology, the earlier we understand and adapt to it the better. There is no getting away and we shall all be forced to go digital without understanding it. Why not prepare ourselves for it then and use technology on our own terms?&quot;

Technology facilitates these behaviours but rarely causes them,&quot; says Aggarwal, who graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi.

On technology replacing human interaction, Aggarwal says, &quot;Technology does not take away from relationships. A skype chat can be more intense than a physical one. Maybe the dynamics of relationships undergo a change because of digital intervention. But look around, we are able to stay in touch with our school friends through networking sites. Families spread across continents connect through communication technology.&quot;

&quot;When we speak of the hazards of overexposure, we must realise that it is our own inability to prioritise. Digital platforms play on our insecurities and attention deficit. It is easier to blame technology than take responsibility of our own excesses. Technology does offer an easy escape. But so do newspapers and books! How much you want to remove yourself from your surroundings is up to you,&quot; he adds.

However, Shilesh Chandra, a businessman from the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is still sceptical about most things digital. He carries a basic mobile phone and uses it only to make or receive calls. He endearingly squabbles with his seven-year-old granddaughter over phone lock passwords. &ldquo;It is just cumbersome. I do not have the patience to deal with so much happening inside my phone. I love my afternoon nap and that&rsquo;s when I switch even this phone off. Does digital spell dystopia?

Imagine a&nbsp;smartpen that lets you write or draw things on any surface and export the same to your smart device.

The Phree, a smartpen that&nbsp;uses a 3D laser technology patented by US-based parent company OTM Technologies, was successfully crowdfunded in 2015, and since then it has been able to secure a good position in the stylus market.

WION Edge interviewed&nbsp;Co-CEO of OTM Technologies Dr Opher Kinrot to understand how a crowdfunding campaign helped the product stand out. Excerpts:

When did the initial idea for Phree come up?

When we developed our optical tracking technology &ndash; OTM (Optical Translation Measurement) &ndash; one of the first ideas that came to mind was using it to develop a digital pen that can be used anywhere. We have been using digital devices &ndash; computers, mobile phones&ndash; all our lives. Making the user interface natural and intuitive is something that is on our minds constantly.

How is the product technologically superior?

Phree is enabled by our OTM optical tracking sensor. This is the only sensor that gives accurate high-resolution motion tracking on any surface in three dimensions. The motion tracking during multi-stroke input &ndash; while crossing the &lsquo;t&rsquo; and dotting the &lsquo;i&rsquo; &ndash; allows natural use of Phree, similar to using a pencil pen. &nbsp;

Is the technology patented?

Yes. The OTM technology is patented worldwide by a host of patents, some already granted.

&ldquo;Who wants a stylus?&rdquo; Steve Jobs mockingly asked while introducing the iPhone in 2007. However, your campaign has proved otherwise. How do you feel about it?

Steve Jobs was right in 2007, and the success of the iPhone, iPad and touch interface shows it.

However, our fingers have limitations, in the same way that you cannot compare &lsquo;finger painting&rsquo; with fine details of a paintbrush and pencil. The dexterity one achieves by holding a tool with three fingers is unparalleled.

Apple themselves have recognised the need and came out with Apple Pencil in September 2015, only three months after the completion of our crowdfunding <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1958554063/phree-make-the-world-your-paper">Kickstarter campaign</a>.

How do you differentiate your product from the other products in the market?

No other product in the market provides what Phree does &ndash; writing anywhere and on any surface. The best styluses by Microsoft (Surface), Samsung (Note) and Apple (Pencil) work only on screens. In addition, Phree works with multiple devices. You can switch from your mobile phone to tablet, laptop and TV.

What should consumers know about stylus technology and other competitors before deciding to buy a stylus?

Consumers need to look at their usage scenarios, both &#39;where&#39; and &#39;when&#39; they want to use a stylus, whether their main use is on the go or in the office, sitting near their table or in meetings, with a single device or using multiple devices, etc. Phree is the only solution that lets you use a stylus anywhere and with any device - not limited by the screen size or location.

Are there any more plans for the future to make Phree stand out?

Phree will bring further usability with emerging virtual and augmented reality headsets, where touch input does not exist and there is no other accurate input device at present.

At what price point are you currently selling your product?&nbsp;

We have pre-orders at $198. Once we start shipping, the price will go up to around $230.

We feel this product is geared more towards the professional user rather than the general user. What are your thoughts?

We see professionals as part of the first users of Phree &ndash; including architects, designers, lawyers, doctors &ndash; people who gain by the ability to easily and quickly markup documents. We also see Phree as being geared to the general user like students and creatives for annotating notes in class, jotting down an idea anywhere and free sketching on the go. General users especially benefit in countries where keyboard use is limiting the input with many characters in the alphabet. Examples of languages that will greatly benefit from handwriting input with Phree are Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Arabic, etc.

Do you feel this product has more potential and can have a next generation? If so, what all changes will be made?

This product has the potential to become the preferred input method for VR/AR &ndash; the &lsquo;mouse&rsquo; for virtual reality interaction. In addition, there is a large potential in education and of course as a mobile input device turning the mobile phone into a work station. Future versions may be specifically geared to these markets.

A smartpen that lets you write on any surface

Apple loyalists in Sydney became the first in the world to purchase the newly-launched iPhone 7 as sales for the new model begins today across 28 countries around the world, the biggest launch of the phone yet, as per UK-based, the Telegraph.&nbsp;

About 200 people queued up outside the Apple store in the Australian city in light rain, according to international news agency Reuters.

A customer, however, was disappointed when he was not able to purchase the much sought-after, jet-black colour he wanted which had sold out to pre-orders.&nbsp;

&quot;We were sad. &nbsp;I&#39;m happy personally to get the matt black 7, like I&#39;m cool with that but I&#39;m still very sad that I&#39;m not going to get a jet black of any phone. I thought Apple being Apple they would have some, they wouldn&#39;t sell out through pre-orders, they would have some aside for loyal fans like me that lineup,&quot; Marcus Barsoum told Reuters.&nbsp;

In US, the iPhone model starts at $649. &nbsp;The American tech giant had launched the smartphone, that features improved cameras, in San Francisco earlier this month. However, the traditional head jack has been removed in favour of the new technology.

The smartphone also hit the shelves in the Asian markets, including China and Japan.

Queues of customers could be seen outside stores in Hong and Beijing, Reuters said. &nbsp;The activity at the Hong Kong store, however, was reportedly subdued.&nbsp;

Crowds in front of Apple stores in downtown Tokyo were also smaller than in past years, according to reports.&nbsp;

It is being speculated that success with the iPhone7 in China is crucial for Apple, though an economic slowdown has slammed the brakes on what was once touted as the firm&#39;s next big growth engine.

Some observers are also of the view that Samsung Galaxy Note 7&#39;s battery fiasco may end up benefitting Apple. &nbsp; The Korean company has already announced that it would recall or replace 1 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in US&nbsp;in the wake of reports of battery fires.&nbsp;

Australian customers first in the world to purchase iPhone 7 as sales begin today

In line with rumours, Apple unveiled the successor to the Apple Watch at the iPhone 7 launch event in San Francisco on Wednesday (September 7).

While the new Apple Watch Series 2 has a design similar to that of the first-generation model, it comes with a plethora of new features.

One of the key highlights of the new Apple Watch is that it comes with built-in GPS, which will allow users to run and gather fitness data during an outdoor workout without having to carry their phone. It is also claimed to be swim-proof (water resistant up to 50 metres). The original Apple Watch was only splash-proof.

As the company claims, the new Apple Watch has &ldquo;the brightest display Apple has ever shipped&rdquo;. The new Watch is powered by a dual-core processor, which, Apple says, is 50 per cent faster than its predecessor.

Apart from aluminum or stainless steel cases, the Apple Watch now comes in a ceramic material, which is said to be four times harder than stainless steel.

The Apple Watch Series 2 will be available in more than 25 countries from September 16. Prices for the new Apple Watch start at $369.
&nbsp;
Apple has also partnered with Nike for a Watch variant called the Apple Watch Nike+. It will also retail at $369, and will go on sale in late October.

Apple Watch Series 2: Apple launches next-generation smartwatch

After weeks of speculations, Apple has finally unveiled the much-anticipated iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus smartphones. The former features a 4.7-inch screen, while the latter comes with a 5.5-inch display.

While the next-generation iPhones come with a host of enhancements, the most significant of them is the removal of the headphone jack. In other words, the new iPhones don&rsquo;t include the traditional 3.5 mm port to connect headphones. The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, instead, will allow users to connect headphones using Apple&#39;s proprietary Lightning connector.

&quot;We are taking the headphones in iPhone 7 and 7 Plus to Lightning, and including them in the box with the device. We have also made a (3.5 mm headphone jack) adapter, which will be included in the box as well,&quot; said Apple vice president Phil Schiller at the iPhone 7 launch event.&nbsp;The adapter will let people use old headphones and accessories with the new iPhones.

With the&nbsp;view to offer users a hassle-free audio experience, Apple has also introduced new wireless headphones - AirPods - which will be available in late October at $159.

Another key improvement in the new iPhones is on the camera front. The iPhone 7 sports a 12 megapixel rear camera with six-element lens, optical image stabilisation and a larger f/1.8 aperture. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, has a dual-camera setup at the back. The Plus variant features the same 12 megapixel wide-angle camera as the iPhone 7 along with a 12 megapixel telephoto lens that offers a 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom. The new iPhones come with a 7 megapixel front HD camera - up from 5 megapixel on the iPhone 6s.

Apple's latest iterations of the iPhone do not include the traditional 3.5 mm headphone jack

In other words, the new iPhones don’t include the traditional 3.5 mm port to connect headphones. The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, instead, will allow users to connect headphones using Apple's proprietary Lightning connector. "We are taking the headphones in iPhone 7 and 7 Plus to Lightning, and including them in the box with the device. We have also made a (3.5 mm headphone jack) adapter, which will be included in the box as well," said Apple vice president Phil Schiller at the iPhone 7 launch event. The adapter will let people use old headphones and accessories with the new iPhones. With the view to offer users a hassle-free audio experience, Apple has also introduced new wireless headphones - AirPods - which will be available in late October at $159. The iPhone 7 Plus has a dual-camera setup at the back. (Image: Apple) The next-generation iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come with iOS 10, which is claimed to be the biggest release ever of Apple’s mobile operating system. Apple will start rolling out the iOS 10 software update from September 13. Other key features in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus include stereo speakers, 25 per cent brighter Retina HD display, and the A10 Fusion chipset which is claimed to be 40 per cent faster than the A9 chipset that powers its predecessors. The new iPhones are water and dust-resistant. Pricing and availability Prices for the iPhone 7 start at $649, while the iPhone 7 Plus is priced at $769 onwards. Apple readies for iPhone 7 launch event

Ireland&#39;s fragile minority government meets for crunch talks to resolve a stalemate on Friday after an EU ruling on Apple that has divided the country and undermined a cornerstone of its economic policy.

Ireland needs to decide whether to appeal the ruling to take 13 billion euros ($15 billion) in taxes from the US tech giant, with growing public pressure to use the money to ease the pain of years of austerity.

The money is equivalent to around five percent of Ireland&#39;s gross domestic product last year and almost all of its annual healthcare budget.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan described the landmark European Commission verdict on Tuesday as &quot;bizarre&quot; and vowed to challenge the finding that Ireland had given Apple special treatment.

But an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday that had been expected to fast-track the appeal to the European Court of Justice failed to reach a consensus.

Instead independent ministers in the coalition government have refused to agree, and sought an early recall of parliament to vote on the issue.

The Irish Times newspaper described the EU Commission&#39;s ruling as a &quot;mini-earthquake&quot;, saying that an inability to agree a common strategy could &quot;end with the crumbling of the coalition&quot; and cause early elections.

&#39;Do the right thing&#39;&nbsp;

Ireland&#39;s minority government, led by the Fine Gael party, includes a number of independents and relies on the support of the main opposition Fianna Fail party, which is likely to back an appeal against the EU ruling.

Some in the government believe Ireland cannot afford to undermine its tax policies, one of the main planks of a highly successful inward investment strategy that has consistently attracted the world&#39;s top tech and pharma multinationals over the past three decades.

Others believe Ireland should take the money the European Commission says it is owed and spend it on services or build more affordable homes to deal with a housing crisis.

Ireland has two months to lodge an appeal against the ruling.

The concern for government is that public opinion could strengthen against an appeal in the run-up to a tough budget scheduled for October, which will have to deal with the economic fall-out for Ireland from neighbouring Britain&#39;s vote to leave the European Union.

Fianna Fail technology spokesman James Lawless said Ireland had to appeal but admitted this would be difficult to explain to voters who wanted the money &quot;gift-wrapped on their doorstep&quot;.

&quot;I would be more interested in preserving Ireland&#39;s sovereign tax status,&quot; he said, accusing the European Commission of interfering in Ireland&#39;s tax affairs.

&quot;Ireland has been caught in the crossfire between the United States and Europe,&quot; he said.

On Thursday, Apple chief Tim Cook turned up the heat further stating his belief that the Irish government &quot;would do the right thing&quot;.

The govt wants to fight an EU verdict saying the tech giant owes the country $15 billion in taxes, but independent ministers disagree

Apple ruling pushes Irish government to the brink

The European Union is expected to order Apple on Tuesday to pay billions of Euros in back taxes in Ireland in one of its largest such cases after ruling that sweetheart tax deals for the US tech giant were illegal.

The bloc&#39;s competition watchdog, Margrethe Vestager, will hold a press conference at 1000 GMT in which sources told AFP she is set to announce the European Commission&#39;s findings on the case.

Brussels launched an inquiry three years ago into tax breaks that Ireland offered iPhone-maker Apple, in one of a series of anti-trust cases targeting major US corporations that have angered Washington.

A European source speaking on condition of anonymity said they &quot;understand it could be billions&quot; that Apple is expected to repay.

Apple and Ireland are both expected to appeal against any decision which rules that the highly competitive tax breaks that Dublin offered to the Silicon Valley giant amounted to illegal state aid.

Apple has had a base at the southern city of Cork since 1980 and employs 5,000 people in Ireland, through which it routes its international sales, avoiding billions in corporation taxes.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a Washington Post interview published August 13, said he hoped to &quot;get a fair hearing&quot; on the matter.

&quot;If we don&#39;t, then we would obviously appeal it,&quot; he added.

&#39;No bias against US&#39;

The US stepped up its fight last Wednesday against the commission&#39;s crackdown on tax avoidance by Apple and other multinational companies, accusing it of unilateralism and overstepping its mandate.

In a white paper, the US Treasury said the commission probe into alleged special tax treatment that certain EU countries gave Apple, Amazon, Starbucks and Fiat Chrysler &quot;undermines the international tax system.&quot;

The EU has made taxes a core issue since the LuxLeaks scandal in which it was revealed that European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker&#39;s native Luxembourg gave companies huge tax breaks while he was prime minister.

In October Brussels ordered US coffee giant Starbucks and Italian automaker Fiat to each repay up to 30 million Euros ($34 million) in back taxes to the Netherlands and Luxembourg respectively.

But the Apple case is set to dwarf those by the virtue of the company&#39;s huge turnover.

A US Treasury spokeswoman declined to comment on a possible ruling Tuesday from the commission.

The US has acknowledged the problems around the issue of multinational firms obtaining state aid, in the form of secret and extremely lucrative tax breaks, from Ireland, Belgium and Luxembourg for setting up business in those countries.

But it said those deals were made under international treaties and accepted tax practices.&nbsp;

Last week the European Commission denied it was targeting US companies in particular and said that EU rules do not allow national tax authorities to give tax breaks to some companies that are not available to others.

&quot;There is no bias against US companies,&quot; it said in a statement.

Washington has also expressed concern about EU anti-trust cases targeting tech giant Google alleging that it has unfairly suppressed &nbsp;

European Union to charge Apple with multi-billion Euro tax in Ireland

Apple Inc on Thursday issued a patch to fix the security flaw with its iPhones&nbsp;and iPads following an attempt to hack the phone of a United Arab Emirates&nbsp;(UAE) dissident.

Human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor had received a text asking him to click&nbsp;on a link. Mansoor instead of clicking the link forwarded the message to&nbsp;researchers at the University of Toronto&#39;s Citizen Lab.

The hack was found to be capable of remotely taking over a fully updated&nbsp;iPhone 6.

&quot;Once infected, Mansoor&rsquo;s phone would have become a digital spy in his&nbsp;pocket, capable of employing his iPhone&rsquo;s camera and microphone to snoop on&nbsp;activity in the vicinity of the device, recording his WhatsApp and Viber calls,&nbsp;logging messages sent in mobile chat apps, and tracking his movements,&quot;&nbsp;Citizen Lab wrote in a report released on Thursday.

The company has now developed a fix and distributed it as an automatic update&nbsp;to iPhone 6 owners.

The attack softwarre was attributed to a private seller of monitoring systems,&nbsp;NSO Group, an Israeli company.

NSO spokesman Zamir Dahbash said that the company &quot;cannot confirm the&nbsp;specific cases&quot; covered in the Citizen Lab and Lookout reports.

Citizen Lab did not directly accuse UAE of carrying out the attack on Mansoor&nbsp;but it said that other NSO attacks on critics of the regime were connected to&nbsp;the government.

It also said that a Mexican journalist and a minority party politician in Kenya&nbsp;had been targeted with NSO software too and that domain names set up for&nbsp;other attacks referred to entities in Uzbekistan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Turkey,&nbsp;and other nations.

The market for government hacking tools has come under increased scrutiny&nbsp;recently.

Microsoft on Monday announced it bought a startup to boost its artificial intelligence capabilities, and rival Apple confirmed it has boosted its health focus with an acquisition of its own.

Microsoft did not disclose financial terms of its deal to buy Genee, which specialises in using machine smarts to handle the time-sucking task of scheduling meetings.

&quot;Genee uses natural language processing and optimised decision-making algorithms so that interacting with a virtual assistant is just like interacting with a human one,&quot; Outlook and Office 365 corporate vice president Rajesh Jha said in a blog post.

For example, Genee can be copied into an email exchange to act as a virtual assistant of sorts to pin down a time for a business or social meeting.

Jha touted Genee as having designed &quot;an intelligent virtual assistant specialised in the appointment decision.&quot;

The technology was expected to be put to work in Office 365 software that Microsoft offers as a service in the internet cloud.

Apple on Tuesday rejected allegations from Russia&#39;s state competition watchdog it may have been involved in fixing prices for iPhones, saying resellers set their own prices.

Apple reacted a day after Russia&#39;s Federal Anti-Monopoly Service (FAS) said it had opened a case into the allegations after a consumer had pointed out that identical prices had been set for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models, which appeared in Russia in October 2015, at 16 major resellers.

Apple, in emailed comments, said it did not oblige Russian resellers to fix prices for its products.

&quot;Resellers set their own prices for the Apple products they sell in Russia and around the world,&quot; the company&#39;s press office said.

FAS said it was looking into the idea that Apple had somehow obliged Russian resellers to treat its recommended product prices as mandatory. It said an investigation had shown that retailers had set identical prices and kept them at that level for a certain time period, including for other models.

FAS has the power to fine firms it finds guilty of price-fixing.

It said an investigation had shown that retailers had set identical prices and kept them at that level for a certain time period, including for other models. FAS has the power to fine firms it finds guilty of price-fixing. (Reuters)

Looks like the long wait for the Frank Ocean fans will finally be over by the end of this week.&nbsp;

According to a source, the R&amp;B singer will be releasing his latest record, &#39;Boys Don&#39;t Cry&#39;, on Friday through an exclusive deal with Apple Music, reports the New York Times.

It will be the first album since his last release on 2012, titled &#39;Channel Orange&#39;, which was widely hailed by critics and nominated for six Grammy Awards. The release is also expected to include a major video and a printed publication called &#39;Boys Don`t Cry&#39; that will be distributed at Apple stores.

The source added that the album is expected to remain exclusive to Apple for two weeks before becoming more widely available.

Ocean first announced the new title three years ago and seemed to play with the long wait when he included the image of an old-school library due-date slip labeled &#39;Boys Don`t Cry&#39; on a website connected to the album. He even added a series of stamped dates going back over a year.

On Monday, a mysterious video appeared on the same website showing a pair of workbenches in a large empty room.&nbsp;

Director Francisco Soriano briefly took credit for the video itself early Monday in an Instagram post that was later deleted. But many viewers did notice the Apple Music logo in a watermark on the feed.&nbsp;

Apple announced yesterday the sale of its billionth iPhone, a milestone for the company as it seeks to keep momentum in a competitive smartphone market.

Chief executive Tim Cook made the announcement at a staff meeting at the company&#39;s California headquarters.

&quot;IPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history,&quot; he said in a statement.

&quot;It&#39;s become more than a constant companion. IPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day. Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we&#39;ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference.&quot;

The news comes a day after Apple reported a drop in iPhone sales over the past quarter, a second straight drop after uninterrupted growth since its introduction in 2007.

Apple sold 40.4 million iPhones in the quarter ending June 25, down 15 per cent from a year earlier, highlighting concerns over growth for the iconic smartphone.

The quarterly results underscored the challenges for Apple, which has built a huge business around the iPhone but is unlikely to see continued growth, due to a saturated smartphone market and increased competition.

Apple has been seeking to diversify its product line and move into services for a more stable revenue base, while keeping users in its ecosystem with offerings such as music, connected cars and its Apple Watch.

Apple announces sale of billionth iPhone

Apple Inc &lt;AAPL.O&gt; is planning to open its first Apple Store in Taiwan, a move that comes after the U.S. technology giant raised $1.38 billion in a bond offering last month on the island that is home to many companies in its supply chain.

Apple was seeking &quot;a leader for personnel training plans for the Taiwan Apple Store&quot; and other retail positions indicating it was looking for a team in Taiwan, according to job postings dated Friday on Apple&#39;s website.

The Cupertino, California-based company confirmed it had plans to open the first Apple Store in Taiwan, but provided no other details.

The Apple Store is the envy of many in the retail world, with the highest sales per square foot in the industry, but some say the stores have lost their edge since the first one opened 15 years ago.

This year Apple&#39;s popular iPhones saw their first ever sales decline during the second quarter as the firm struggled with an increasingly saturated smartphone market.

Apple&#39;s Greater China revenue, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, sank 26 percent in its second fiscal quarter from a year earlier.

Apple didn&#39;t break out revenue for Taiwan, but company executives said in April that the decline had to do with revenue from Hong Kong.

Google on Wednesday announced a deal to buy Moodstocks, a French startup behind technology that helps smartphones recognise whatever they are aimed at.

Moodstocks caught the US technology giant&#39;s eye for its work in computer vision and machine learning, as well for accomplishments in enabling smartphones or other mobile devices to recognise images and objects.

Google is among Silicon Valley titans investing in ways to get computers to see and understand the world around them the way people do.

Machine learning has been woven into an array of Google offerings, such as its free language translation and photo services.

&quot;There&#39;s a lot more to be done to improve machine vision,&quot; Google France tech site lead Vincent Simonet said in a blog post.&nbsp;&quot;That&#39;s where Moodstocks comes in.&quot;

The Moodstocks team, described as a small group of researchers and engineers, will join a Google research and development centre in Paris, according to Simonet.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.&nbsp;Google and its parent Alphabet are expected to integrate the image search team in artificial intelligence efforts.

At its annual developers conference in May, Google unveiled a virtual home assistant device that will challenge Amazon Echo.&nbsp;Google Home, about the size of a stout vase, will hit the market later this year and will incorporate new virtual assistant software.

When Home hits, it will challenge Amazon Echo voice-controlled assistants that have proven to be a hit since the Seattle-based online retail colossus unveiled them two years ago.

Many Internet companies are exploring the promise of artificial intelligence, for example, smartphone applications that can learn a user&#39;s habits and anticipate searches and requests.

In the high tech hub of Tel Aviv, where companies have been responsible for ground-breaking advances like the USB stick, Or Offer never thought it would be hard to find workers for his fast-growing Internet data firm SimilarWeb.

But an alarming lack of engineers, technicians and even doctors, which is jeopardizing Israel&#39;s place among the world&#39;s technological elite, sent him looking abroad.

&quot;There&#39;s a brutal fight over skilled employees,&quot; said Offer, whose company has quadrupled in size in the past two years, hiring over 200 new people.

To boost the technical side of the business that analyses website data, he set up a development centre in Ukraine.

Without the huge populations of emerging markets like India or the vast network of foreigners who call Silicon Valley home, Israel&#39;s high tech enterprise seems to have dried out the well.

Over the next decade it will face a shortage of about 10,000 engineers and programmers in a market that currently employs 140,000, according to the country&#39;s chief scientist, Avi Hasson, who is the government&#39;s point man on sustaining innovation.

&quot;The issue of skilled and available manpower is the main barrier to growth and competitiveness in the field of high tech,&quot; Hasson said.

The industry, which sprouted from an advanced military and flourished with state backing, became a major growth engine and investment magnet for Israel.

Multinationals like Apple, Intel and Google have been eager to snap up local start-ups and set up research centres. High-tech goods and services now account for 12.5 per cent of Israel&#39;s gross domestic product and half its industrial exports.

Younger firms are noticing the skills problem as they compete for workers with the global giants operating in Israel.

&quot;There are a lot of international players around, coming in with deep pockets. Facebook, Google and others can make offers 50 per cent above market and equity packages that are very lucrative,&quot; said Nir Zohar, president of website-designer Wix.com, which is known for its big-budget Super Bowl ads. &quot;It&#39;s becoming harder and harder with the amount of effort you need to put in to recruit.&quot;

Human capital

Since taking office in 2013, Bank of Israel Governor Karnit Flug has been sounding the alarm over the threat to Israel&#39;s pool of &quot;human capital&quot;.

An aging population, lagging education and poor integration of Israel&#39;s Arab and ultra-Orthodox Jewish minorities in the labour market is making the workforce less effective, she said in a May speech. Combined, Israeli Arabs and ultra-Orthodox Jews make up about 30 per cent of the population.

Nearly half the country&#39;s doctors, for example, are 55 or older, the highest figure in the Western world, while the rate of students completing medical school is among the lowest.

University graduates in maths and computer science fell to 1,600 in 2008 from 3,000 in 2005. The figure has recovered, but not returned to prior levels. Israel is ranked 17 among the 34 members of the OECD in the ease of finding skilled workers.

Tech companies prospered for years by tapping into the skills of workers trained in the military or intelligence sectors and start-ups benefitting from tax breaks and government funding. But those are drying up.

Two years ago Israel lost the top spot it held for more than a decade among the OECD when it comes to investment in research and development, mainly due to a steep drop in government investment. South Korea is now top of the tree.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews and Arabs rarely serve in the military and are marginalised from the high tech industry. The government is now implementing a number of programmers to include them, like improving language skills and special training.

Visas

Feeling the heat, firms have been fighting to bring in qualified foreigners to ease the stress.

&quot;In Israel, to get a work permit is harder than to make peace,&quot; said Eldad Tamir, head of the Tamir Fishman Investment House and a partner in Eucalyptus Growth Capital, a fund that invests in high tech companies.

Tamir&#39;s partner in Eucalyptus, David Perlmutter, former chief product officer at Intel, lamented that Israel imports labour for agriculture and construction but not for technology.

&quot;If you look at other countries that want to develop, they bring in workers. All of Silicon Valley is based on that. Here it doesn&rsquo;t happen,&quot; he said.

Nearly 75 per cent of computer and math workers aged 25-44 employed in California&#39;s Silicon Valley are foreign-born, according to the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies.

In the 1990s, the influx of one million immigrants from the former Soviet Union helped fuel Israel&#39;s high-tech boom. Today about 30,000 people arrive annually, but it is not enough to meet the demands of the growing industry.

&quot;Israel was built in a very homogenous way in terms of our innovation ecosystem. We did import talent, but only Jewish talent,&quot; and that needs to change, said Hasson.

Only an &quot;anecdotal&quot; number of foreign high tech workers are being brought in today, Hasson said, referring to a smattering of cases like the US-born CEO of TowerJazz who over the past decade helped turn around the ailing chipmaker.

He said Israel would soon begin a pilot for issuing a few hundred work visas a year, but it&#39;s unlikely to be enough.

Israel's high tech boom threatened by shallow labour pool

Japan&#39;s, Sony Corp, on Wednesday, lifted the sales target for its games division next year on hopes for its new virtual reality headset, and said it would re-enter robots a decade after it last abandoned the business.

But the electronics giant cut its outlook for image sensor sales amid slowing demand for smartphones, and maintained its operating profit target of 500 billion Yen ($4.9 billion) for the year beginning April.

The announcement comes as company watchers rely on sensors to continue driving Sony&#39;s revival after years of struggle.

While the sensor slowdown is likely to disappoint, investors can take comfort in the unchanged profit target, which highlights that Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai is keeping to a recovery track and has not given up on new technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

Hirai at a news conference said the games business was set to be Sony&#39;s biggest growth driver, helped by strong console sales, a rise in subscribers to its PlayStation network and the launch of its virtual reality headset.

The headset will be sold from October for $399, in competition with, the $599 of a rival product from Facebook Inc&#39;s Oculus Rift.

&quot;It&#39;s an area where Sony can leverage its expertise in cameras, filming, content production as well as entertainment assets,&quot; Hirai said, lifting the division&#39;s sales target range to 1.8 trillion to 1.9 trillion yen ($17.6 billion to $18.6 billion) from 1.4 trillion to 1.6 trillion yen.

He also confirmed Sony aimed to introduce a robot &quot;capable of forming an emotional bond&quot;.

Sony was a pioneer in robotics, launching dog AIBO in 1999 and humanoid QRIO in 2003. But efforts stalled during a decade-long struggle to cut costs in its consumer electronics business amid price competition from Asian rivals. It produced its last AIBO and QRIO in 2006.

Sensor slowdown &#39;inevitable&#39;

Sony cut its sales outlook for its devices division, which includes image sensors used in smartphones, to a range of one trillion to 1.05 trillion Yen from 1.3 trillion to 1.5 trillion Yen.

Strong demand from smartphone makers such as Apple Inc had helped Sony recover from a slump in sales of consumer electronics such as television sets.

But Apple and other smartphone makers have seen slowing sales of high-end handsets since late last year, prompting Sony to recently cancel the development of advanced camera modules designed for high-end smartphones.

&quot;The ongoing slowdown in profit growth appears inevitable through fiscal 2017,&quot; Hirai said.

Asked about the impact of Britain&#39;s vote to leave the European Union, Hirai said Sony aims to achieve its targets regardless of consequent currency swings.

FTC Chairman Jeong Jae-chan declined to comment on specifics

South Korea's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating "some matters" relating to tech giant Apple Inc, the head of the anti-competition body said during a parliamentary hearing, without disclosing further details. Speaking at the hearing on Tuesday, FTC Chairman Jeong Jae-chan declined to comment on the specifics of the regulator's investigation when asked to do so by a South Korean lawmaker. Domestic media reports said earlier this month the FTC was reviewing details of the US firm's contracts with South Korean mobile telecoms carriers. Apple didn't immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. (Reuters)

Apple said today&nbsp;it will continue to sell its iPhones in China pending an appeal of a ruling which said the smartphones violated a patent of a Chinese manufacturer.

An Apple spokesman said in a statement&nbsp;that &quot;iPhone&nbsp;6&nbsp;and&nbsp;iPhone&nbsp;6Plus as well as&nbsp;iPhone&nbsp;6s,&nbsp;iPhone&nbsp;6S Plus and&nbsp;iPhone&nbsp;SE models are all available for sale today in China.&quot;

&quot;We appealed an administrative order from a regional patent tribunal in Beijing last month and as a result the order has been stayed pending review by the Beijing IP Court,&quot; the statement said.

A May 19 ruling said Apple violated design patents of Chinese maker Shenzhen&nbsp;Baili for its iPhone6 and&nbsp;iPhone&nbsp;6&nbsp;Plus, and would be barred from selling those models.

The news comes with China an increasingly important market for Apple as it deals with a slowdown in global&nbsp;smartphone&nbsp;sales.

Apple Inc announced a series of long-awaited enhancements to its App Store on Wednesday, but the new features may not ease concerns of developers and analysts who say that the App Store model - and the very idea of the single-purpose app - has seen its best days.

The revamped App Store will let developers advertise their wares in search results and give developers a bigger cut of revenues on subscription apps, while Apple said it has already dramatically sped up its app-approval process.
The goal is to sustain the virtuous cycle at the heart of the hugely lucrative iPhone&nbsp;business. Software developers make apps for the iPhone because its customers are willing to pay, and those customers, in turn, pay a premium for the device because it has the best apps.

The store is now more strategically important than ever for Apple as sales of the iPhone begin to level off and the company looks to software and services to fill the gap. Apple CEO Tim Cook said during&nbsp;a recent conference call&nbsp;that App Store revenues were up 35 per cent over last year.

But the store is also a victim of its own success. Eight years after its launch, it is packed with more than 1.9 million apps, according to analytics firm App Annie, making it almost impossible for developers to find an audience - and increasingly difficult for customers to find what they need, as some 14,000 new apps arrive in the store each week.

&quot;The app space has grown out of control,&quot; said Vint Cerf, one of the inventors of the internet and now a vice president at Alphabet Inc&#39;s Google, who was speaking at a San Francisco conference on the future of the web on Wednesday. &quot;We need to move away from having an individual app for every individual thing you want to do.&quot;

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Some users are moving away from apps toward messaging services such as Slack and Facebook Inc&#39;s Messenger, which are branching out into areas like shopping and document storage.

Meanwhile, rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to a world where people navigate their phones through voice-controlled digital assistants such as Apple&#39;s Siri, rather than opening individual apps.

To be sure, chat and AI are in their infancy, and their appeal to the masses remains uncertain. But if they take off, they could erase the edge Apple enjoys by virtue of its strong app ecosystem and tip the scales toward Google, which is widely considered to have the lead in AI.

&quot;The current dynamic is very favorable to Apple, and this is a suggestion that we might shift to a different dynamic where Google would have a very strong advantage,&quot; said Benedict Evans, a partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.

&quot;No matter what you do to an app store, you always have that underlying problem: It&#39;s a list of a million things,&quot; Evans&nbsp;added.

Apple may yet find ways to wield AI to reinforce the App Store. The company has already woven more intelligence into its operating system, which now prompts iPhone users to open certain apps during the day based on their habits.

DEVELOPER GRIPES
On a more basic level, the changes announced this week address some of the loudest complaints from developers, who say it is virtually impossible to stand out in an app landscape dominated by hit games, big media companies and internet giants such as Facebook and Google.

Statistics from Sensor Tower, an app analytics firm, show a stark and widening divide between top earners and low performers in the App Store.

The top one&nbsp;per cent of app publishers raked in about 94 per cent of the store&#39;s estimated $1.43 billion net revenue in the first quarter of 2016. The gulf has expanded rapidly since July 2012, the first month for which Sensor Tower has data, when the top one&nbsp;per cent netted about 80 per cent of the revenue in the store, according to data provided to Reuters. The figures cover paid apps and apps that include in-app purchases.

Some developers who carved out a niche early say they doubt success would come so easily today.

&quot;Now the challenge for developers is, if there&#39;s an app for everything, how will you create an app people will use?&quot; said Lucas Buick, who founded Hipstamatic, a photography app that was an early hit in the App Store.

TOO LATE?
David Barnard, founder of Contrast, an app development company, applauded the new focus on subscriptions, which he said would encourage developers to invest in their apps. But getting attention in the store remains a challenge.

&quot;It&#39;s not like they fixed everything in one fell swoop,&quot; Barnard said.

Pete Zed, a 33-year-old Oakland, California developer, thought he had a hit on his hands when reminder app Bump was featured by Apple in January 2015, inspiring thousands of users to install the programme. But as soon as the promotion ended, downloads dropped. Zed discontinued the service this year.

Some developers are banking on the next wave of user interfaces.

In 2014, developer Eswar Priyadarshan founded Tasteful, which aims to guide users with various diets to healthy restaurant dishes through its app. Tasteful&#39;s audience, though loyal, is too niche to vault it up the App Store charts, Priyadarshan said.

In a bid to lessen his dependence on the App Store, he recently made Tasteful available on chat platforms such as Messenger and Slack.

&quot;It has been difficult to get the kind of growth we need to sustain an app&nbsp;business,&quot; Priyadarshan said.

Analyst Bob O&#39;Donnell of TECHnalysis Research said he doubted the changes will do much to move the needle for small developers.

&quot;At the end of the day I&rsquo;m not sure how much real-world impact it&rsquo;s going to end up having for a lot of these apps,&quot; he said.
