He also alleged that the spectrum attack has tainted the DMK&#39;s ideological movement and questioned, &quot;Who will punish those who tainted your 80 year public life?&quot;

The judge noted that the prosecution has &quot;miserably failed to prove any charge.&quot;

Shortly after the verdict was announced, Raja said that his faith in the nations&#39; justice was validated.

&quot;My firm belief in the rightfulness of my actions as well as my faith in our nation&#39;s justice system has been validated today,&quot; he said.

He said he had felt vindicated all along the case and added that results of his actions had benefitted the people.

Raja also said that the matter was <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/2g-scam-entire-case-was-cooked-up-says-a-raja-27393">all cooked up</a>. He claimed that the judge acquitted him because the prosecution case was false.

Raja, surrounded by family, had wept in court after the verdict.

Everyone was expecting the conviction of someone. I mean acquittal of everyone was not expected. There were money trail that were established.&nbsp; The Enforcement Directorate has clearly established links between the bank accounts and money flowing back and forth.&nbsp;

I wouldn&#39;t say there was no case.

WION: Was it a badly argued case?

GG: I wouldn&#39;t say badly argued. I wouldn&#39;t say that the Prosecution did a bad job. I would say, it was not as big a loss, as big a case, or it wasn&#39;t as sensational as everyone was claiming from the word go.

WION: Did the court make a difference between criminality and civil offense

GG: Yes. There were lapses in decision making, which can at best be an administrative lapse. To prove criminality, you have to show something beyond reasonable doubt. If you are trying a person for life, you have to show something beyond reasonable and that was not meted in this case.&nbsp;

The government did say, the Raza was the mastermind and all his motives were actuated by the motive of illegal bribery and gratification that he had taken. This illegal gratification of bribery is what the CBI has failed to establish. They have failed to establish the lapses of Raza, if there was one, was part of illegal gratification.&nbsp;

WION: So, what went wrong with the case? Many would say that this verdict shows that as if nothing has happened.&nbsp;

GG: If you believe in the judgement then you have to say that this was the propaganda by the Opposition. Today, as a lawyer, as a citizen, I cannot travel beyond the judgement.&nbsp;

WION: As a lawyer, do you think there were any glaring legal loopholes through which some slipped away?

GG: From the very beginning what Mr Rai was saying of losses of 1.76 crores that was junked by the CBI. The CBI said that can&#39;t be the magnitude. It is about one-sixth of that. Then when it came to court proceedings, the CBI was unable to show how 30,000 crores was also lost by the public exchequer. So, yes there was more hype, less substance.&nbsp;

WION: Do you think the UPA government was victimised unnecessarily&nbsp;

GG: As a lawyer, I have to confine myself to what has come out in the judgement. If the judgement says, what it says is right, then yes.&nbsp;

All the hype about the UPA government tenure being completely tainted by scandal, you have to remember, one scam came to symbolise all the ills of UPA-2. If the judgement is held to be correct, there was some victimisation.&nbsp;

The chargesheet against him also accuses him of misleading the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The former DMK leader has denied the charges and said the decisions were taken keeping Manmohan Singh in the loop.

A Raja was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2011 following which the trial in the case commenced. He was released on bail nearly a year later.

DMK leader Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi is accused of accepting kickbacks.The CBI alleges bribes worth Rs 200 crore paid by a telecom company to A Raja was deposited in the account of a television channel partly owned by her. She has denied the accusations against her.

Kanimozhi was arrested in 2011 and released on bail the same year after spending over six months in jail.

Two cases have been filed by the CBI and another one by the Enforcement Directorate. The court is likely to pronounce its judgement in all the cases today.

The matter will go up to the higher court but will give enough time for the Congress to milk it. It was this case, particularly, Kapil Sibal&#39;s famous &quot;zero loss&quot; statement which turned 2G into a hurricane, unsettling BJP&#39;s secured nook.

&nbsp;For now, the acquittal unsettles the political map. It marks the return of Manmohan Singh who was the victim of a vicious campaign.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Sympathy is a very important ingredient in Indian politics. People at large had stopped sympathising with Manmohan Singh. He was called servile and more loyal to the Congress Party than to the post of the Prime Minister.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

This case changes all of that. It should worry BJP.

Manmohan Singh&#39;s credibility was in tatters and the Opposition made him the face of crony capitalism.

&nbsp;

&nbsp;This verdict will enable Singh to be far more aggressive than he has ever been after 2014. Even his limited appearance in Gujarat on GST got him good coverage. This is not to say that Manmohan will regain the centre stage in the Congress. However, he has the capacity to emerge as a tool to attack BJP on many issues and gain sympathy.&nbsp;

For this, the former prime minister can put BJP in a dock.

&nbsp;Many can argue that high and mighty never get caught and 2G is going to the Bofors way. However, Manmohan Singh&#39;s ability to gather sympathy should not be underestimated. Though the case involved corporates, bureaucrats and DMK leaders, Manmohan had to face the jibe of the Prime Minister Modi where he said that people should learn from Manmohan Singh how to bath in a bathroom wearing a raincoat.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

&nbsp;The verdict also thickens the relationship between Congress and the DMK despite the fact Prime Minister Modi made a visit to greet Karunanidhi. Today AIDMK lies in tatters despite a solid majority. There are corruption cases against its leaders and the DMK as a house looks far more disciplined. Alighari&rsquo;s issue has been long settled and the verdict for some time will allow DMK to be politically very aggressive in Tamil Nadu. It will become even more acute for the ADMK as they don&rsquo;t have Jayalalitha to arrest the reversal of fortune.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Coming back to the moot point of BJP&rsquo;s position on corruption, the government will have to explain as to what went wrong during the argument. It will have to convince the public that it ran a genuine campaign against corruption and only the argument has gone wrong. Till then, Congress will have a field day using Manmohan Singh as a victim. After Gujarat, the 2G verdict has again opened the game for the Congress. Let&rsquo;s see what it makes of it.

Opinion: With 2G verdict, Manmohan Singh returns to glory

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who unearthed the 2G spectrum case, on Thursday, snubbed the verdict in the multi-crore scam while saying that the government needs loyal officers, not sycophants.

All accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam cases - including former telecom minister A Raja and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi - were, earlier in the day, acquitted by a Special CBI court.

Speaking to media, the BJP leader also slammed former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi for welcoming the verdict and said such people should not be made law officers.

&quot;Mukul Rohatgi has welcomed this judgement. When he was appointed Attorney General, I had written to the Prime Minister opposing his appointment, as Rohatgi was an advocate of many of the accused companies, including Unitech. These people should not be made law officer because a wrong signal will go that we are not serious about corruption,&quot; he said.

&quot;The corruption agenda has been derailed, but it can be put back on track again. We just need some honest and straightforward law officers and good lawyers, not those who do &#39;chamchagiri&#39; to the ministers. We need somebody who has got stature and we need to put them together to have a team and within three months we can reverse whatever has happened,&quot; Swamy said.

He further called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a lesson from this and &quot;set up war council for fighting corruption.&quot;

&quot;The Judge says earlier there was a lot of enthusiasm, but later it became worse and worse. Judge also said counsels were lackadaisical. This is a big condemnation of the government controlling of the case. This is not a setback at all. It is an aberration as the law officers were not serious on fighting against corruption... We must now fight corruption on war footing,&quot; he said.

He further said that a special team should be set up, which would set aside this judgment.

The verdict was announced nearly seven years after the first arrest was made by the CBI in 2011.

The alleged scam relates to the granting of 2G spectrum licence allocations in 2007-08, which caused, according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the public exchequer.

It was among the major corruption scandals that came to light during the second term of the UPA government headed by former prime minister Manmohan Singh.&nbsp;
