Former England captain Nasser Hussain has backed India great Virat Kohli to break the deadlock and come good with the bat on the big day as India and South Africa gear up for the T20 World Cup Final in Barbados on Saturday (June 29). Having scored just 75 runs in seven matches while opening the batting in this edition. Kohli has struggled big time, getting out to single digits on several occasions. With all eyes on Team India and their batting mainstay, Hussain feels Kohli will up his game against the Proteas.

Recalling how the batting veteran weathered the storm against Pakistan at the MCG the last time, Hussain said players like Kohli come good on the days when it matters the most, and what’s better than doing it in the T20 WC final?

"I mean, you go back to the game against Pakistan at the MCG, India were floundering. Who was there at the end? Smashing. That's the biggest game of all time for the Indians. India, Pakistan, you know. So, he is always there in big matches," Nasser Hussain said during a chat on Sky Sports.

Squashing the idea of Kohli changing his style of play, which hasn’t helped him nor the team in any way in this tournament, Hussain feels Virat must continue to bat like he’s batted for over a decade, in a very Virat Kohli style, instead trying to become someone whom he’s not. Hussain added Kohli has all the shots in his book, and despite a healthy strike rate of around 138, he can stick around and act as a glue.

"He's not like Hardik Pandya, who is a power player. You just go out and power here. Virat Kohli needs time in the middle rhythm. He bats for 3–4 overs and gets that rhythm.
England white-ball coach Matthew Mott is ready to take the result chin-up but promises to return ‘bigger, badder and better’ following the T20 World Cup exit. Mott and Captain Jos Buttler faced wrath for an embarrassing outing against India in the second semis of the ongoing showpiece event in the Americas, with local media reports suggesting a change in the leadership group going forward. Although none of the stakeholders have spoken about it, Mott feels he can retain his job and be back in style.

England was there and still not there in their semis clash against India in Guyana. Though they had a couple of daunting wins to boast about in their lead-up to the final four, losses to Australia and South Africa and a washout game against Scotland, where they hit them for 90/0 in ten overs, didn’t present the best picture about their preparations.

We will come back 'bigger, badder and better', says England coach Matthew Mott after T20 WC exit

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels Rohit’s Indian Team has what it takes to win the 2024 T20 World Cup Final against South Africa. Ganguly backs the Men in Blue to break the 11-year ICC trophy drought deadlock by topping another unbeaten unit at the tournament, South Africa. However, he jokingly remarked if India failed to win this time (the second ICC Final in around seven months), Rohit would jump into the Barbados ocean.

Since taking over the India captaincy from Virat across formats a couple of years ago, Rohit has led the Indian Team to three ICC Finals, including the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia last year and the 50-over World Cup at home a few months later; however, India lost to Australia on both occasions.

T20 World Cup: From one leader to another – Stokes backs Buttler to retain job despite India hammering

The 2024 T20 World Cup final between India and South Africa will get underway at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday (June 29). The two teams are unbeaten thus far in the tournament, with the summit clash to separate one from winning the title. With the cricket world preparing for the summer's biggest match, fans worldwide would be eager to know about the weather conditions and the pitch report.

Weather condition in Barbados

Given how the second semi-final between India and England unfolded, with rain interruptions making it frustrating for the players and the fans, everyone is asking one question – will it rain during the T20 World Cup final?

Per AccuWeather, there are chances of showers before and during the finale.

Though there is an approx 50% chance of precipitation during the morning from 4 am to 9 am, the number reduces to 30% between 10 am (scheduled toss time) and 1 pm, while increasing to 50% after that.

For the game to be complete, 190 minutes of extra time will be allotted, but in case of excess rain abandoning Saturday’s play, the match will move to the reserve day (on Sunday).

In case the game gets underway on Saturday and later is stopped due to rain, the match will begin from that same point on Sunday instead of starting from scratch.

Besides, for the result to come out on either day, both teams must play for at least ten overs, or else the finale would be called off, with both teams sharing the trophy.

Pitch report

It will be the ninth game taking place at this venue this edition. While the first game here went till the Super Over, none of the following matches were close contests. In the next four games at this venue, teams batting first won three times, with Scotland racing to 90 for no loss against England in a washout tie.

Meanwhile, the last two matches in Barbados suggest a different story, as West Indies and England wrapped up the USA early, completing a successful run chase quickly.

Though South Africa hasn't played at this venue, India’s lone match against Afghanistan saw them defend 182.

Result Prediction

Two unbeaten teams will have a go at each other for the T20 World Cup title, with the Men in Blue entering this contest as favourites.

Should India beat South Africa, it will be their second T20 title, but if the Proteas emerge victorious, they would be putting their hands on a WC trophy for the first time.

With the cricket world preparing for the summer's biggest match, fans worldwide would be eager to know about the weather conditions and the pitch report. Weather condition in Barbados Given how the second semi-final between India and England unfolded, with rain interruptions making it frustrating for the players and the fans, everyone is asking one question – will it rain during the T20 World Cup final? Pitch report It will be the ninth game taking place at this venue this edition. While the first game here went till the Super Over, none of the following matches were close contests. T20 World Cup Final, India vs South Africa: Will rain play spoilsport in showdown tie?

Two batting stalwarts across formats in the past decade, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, gear up for the showdown in the Caribbean, with India facing South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup final on Saturday in Barbados. Having served Indian cricket for over 15 years and won two ICC titles each, Virat and Rohit, knowing less about what the future holds for them, could be seen playing a T20 World Cup for the last time.

Although none has commented anything about their T20I future, neither did the media try getting under their skin, but one can believe that both have perhaps reached the pinnacle in this format; if India wins their second T20 world title this time, what’s a better occasion to bow out than now?

Rohit and Virat have seen it all in cricket – agony, ecstasy, heartbreaks and whatnot. With both being at the helm of the things in India’s countless failed campaigns since 2013, when India last won an ICC title (Champions Trophy), the two greats must be eager to end the trophy drought and walk away with their heads held high.

Meanwhile, considering a change in the leadership and the backroom staff following this T20 World Cup, plenty will alter. Regardless of the result in the final against the Proteas, Rohit might continue to lead in the Tests and ODIs until the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with chances of a new captain replacing him afterwards.

To back this, per the latest reports, Gautam Gambhir – the top contender to replace Dravid as Team India head coach, is said to have put out five conditions before accepting the offer, one of which reads that if India fails to win the eight-team competition next year, four senior players, including Virat, Rohit, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami, will be shown the door.

Not that the incoming coach has an agenda on the head, but the idea is to prepare a team with the right blend of experienced and young cricketers for the next 50-over World Cup in 2027, which was also one of the five conditions he laid.

Eye on 2026 T20 World Cup

In between all of this, India would co-host the next T20 World Cup two years later in 2026.

Given Rohit would be 39 by then, and Kohli would be 37, the selectors and the new backroom staff might want to back the youngsters at the top, considering the unbelievable pool of talent India has.

However, with all eyes on the mega clash against the Proteas this time, Virat and Rohit will again look to put the Men in Blue off to a flyer. Although Rohit has been among runs, having scored two fifties in the previous two outings, veteran Virat hasn’t looked in his element.

Logistical challenges continue to haunt the organisers, the players and their families, the broadcasters and ICC match officials. With the USA and the West Indies hosting the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup, rapid changes to the schedule and short turnaround between matches haven’t spared anyone. The South African Team is the latest to be hit by such an obstacle.

After winning their semi-final match against Afghanistan on Thursday (June 27) in the most one-sided affair, the Proteas team, their staff and everyone else got stranded at the Trinidad airport because of a runway closure at the Grantley Adams airport in Barbados, the venue for the T20 WC final. It was due to a landing failure of a small private plane.

Logistical challenges hit T20 WC before India-South Africa final as Proteas team landing delayed in Barbados

Jos Buttler admits India outplayed England in the Guyana semi-final as the defending champions crashed out of the 2024 T20 World Cup after a 68-run loss. Reflecting on how they failed to beat a spirited Indian Team, Buttler said his judgement error of not bowling Moeen Ali on the spin-friendly track is one of the reasons behind the embarrassing defeat.

While for India, their captain Rohit Sharma (57), Suryakumar Yadav (47) and Player of the Match Axar Patel (for his six-ball ten and three wickets for 23 runs in the second innings) made headlines, England’s performers were their two leg spinners – Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone and seamer Chris Jordan, who picked three wickets.

After electing to bowl first following a rain delay, England’s back was against the wall. Rashid and Liam provided some relief later by conceding a combined 49 runs in eight overs, picking a wicket each. Though Buttler ruled out toss as the reason for their thrashing, he admitted that avoiding bowling Moeen on this track proved costly, as India, per him, scored 20-25 runs more to his liking.

India’s World Cup winner, Kapil Dev, revealed the mantra behind how top teams stand tall in ICC events, mainly the World Cups. With Rohit Sharma-led India Team side plying its trade in the ongoing 2024 T20 WC in the Americas, Kapil feels everyone has a role to play in the side, and though every team's tactics are centric around their star players, playing together will only benefit in the end.

“Why talk about only Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, or Kuldeep Yadav? Everybody has a role to play. Their job is to win the tournament,” Kapil said in a chat with PTI.

“To win a match, an odd person can come out, but to win a tournament everybody has to work together. If we are going to depend on Bumrah or Arshdeep, then you are going to lose it.

“Let’s talk about the team. That gives you a better perspective rather than the odd player. Yes, main player is there, and we can go around him. But everybody has to chip in to win the World Cup,” Kapil continued.

‘Talk about team and not one player’ – Kapil Dev’s suggestion to Rohit's Indian Team on how to win World Cup

Former Australia opener David Warner feels dynamite batter Jake Fraser-McGurk can fill his place in the white-ball side following his international retirement. Australian Team's exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup meant Warner bowed out without a trophy this year.

One of the most successful Aussie batters over the past decade, Warner spent some time with Fraser-McGurk in the middle and dressing room during IPL 2024, playing for Delhi Capitals, and also during the showpiece event, where Australia picked McGurk as a travelling reserve. Although he was in contention for making it to the final 15 following his magnificent maiden IPL season, the selectors opted to pick seniors instead.

However, with their campaign done and dusted, Australia will look into bringing a new face to replace Warner at the top, and who better than Fraser-McGurk?

"All yours now champion," Warner’s caption on Instagram Stories read while mentioning Jake.

Speaking to the media after Australia’s T20 WC exit, Warner said how he learnt the art of playing ODIs, Jake has to do the same, and once he gets the gist of it, he will go place in the shorter formats.

Commenting on his prospect of becoming a regular in the ODIs, Warner in a chat with News Corp and cricket.com.au. said, "Every time I put something out there, I become a selector [but] I think he's definitely got the ability to definitely do that."

"He (Jake) can lock it in. And a bit like myself, you [have to learn] how to play…50-over cricket. That's one thing that I learnt from Twenty20. I got dropped after seven games because I didn't really understand how to play the game of one-day cricket," he added.

"So, from a one-day perspective, if he learns that and understands that he'll have a fantastic career, especially batting in Australia. Best wickets in the world," Warner further said.

Jake’s ready for the rise

Jake made a name for himself during the Marsh Cup last year, smashing a 29-ball hundred – the quickest ever in List A cricket. Jake then made his Australia debut soon after, playing two ODIs against West Indies, scoring 51 off 23 balls across two innings.

His mega moment came when Delhi Capitals roped him in as an injury replacement, with Fraser smashing three of the quickest fifties in the tournament history.

With the selectors likely to pick him for the upcoming Scotland and England series later this year, Warner feels McGurk is not far from his Test debut.

"Will he play Test cricket? I think he'll have to have a breakout year in the next 12-18 months to prove himself," Warner said. "I think we've all had to score hundreds to get your name up there [to] warrant that.

"Hopefully, when it comes to Shield cricket this year, he sticks at that. There's going to be a lot of money thrown around to him for these Twenty20 leagues, and it's upon him and his management to keep him focused and aligned with what he wants to do. But I hope he does - I know he's thinking like that. He wants to play red-ball cricket,” he continued.

"All yours now champion," Warner’s caption on Instagram Stories read while mentioning Jake. ALSO READ: ‘That's a decision way above my pay grade’, says England's Mott on Guyana hosting India-England semis Speaking to the media after Australia’s T20 WC exit, Warner said how he learnt the art of playing ODIs, Jake has to do the same, and once he gets the gist of it, he will go place in the shorter formats. Commenting on his prospect of becoming a regular in the ODIs, Warner in a chat with News Corp and cricket.com.au. said, "Every time I put something out there, I become a selector [but] I think he's definitely got the ability to definitely do that." "He (Jake) can lock it in. Jake’s ready for the rise Jake made a name for himself during the Marsh Cup last year, smashing a 29-ball hundred – the quickest ever in List A cricket. (With inputs from agencies)

David Warner passes opening baton to ‘dynamite’ Jake Fraser-McGurk after Australia's T20 WC exit

Even before the 2024 T20 World Cup began in the Americas, the broadcasters, the Indian Team, and cricket fans worldwide all knew if the Men in Blue topped their group and Super 8s, they would be playing their semis clash in Guyana, something England head coach Matthew Mott feels could advantage them. Ahead of the marquee T20 WC semis tie between India and England at the showpiece event on Thursday (June 27), Mott shared his thoughts on what’s keeping India’s nose ahead.

With two semi-finals in one day and the final within 48 hours, the ICC decided against providing a reserve day for the second semis clash (between India and England). With the rain likely playing a spoilsport in the Guyana game, India, for topping their group, would advance to the final, leaving the English camp and fans furious over the whole scenario.

England haven't had the best of runs this tournament as they were staring at an early exit, considering their start, with a draw against Scotland and a loss against the mighty Aussies in their next match. However, two massive wins in their Group B saw them qualify for the Super 8s.

‘That's a decision way above my pay grade’, says England's Mott on Guyana hosting India-England semis

Jos Buttler feels the defending champions will be under pressure against Rohit Sharma-led Indian Team in the marquee 2024 T20 World Cup semis clash in Guyana on Thursday (June 27). While England lost a few games in the lead-up to this match, the Indian Team is unbeaten thus far, winning six games on the trot. Buttler said he is in awe of Rohit and his team’s run this time, admitting England will deploy the same attacking approach in the all-important knockout.

England played some of the top teams this time, including Australia in the group stage and West Indies and South Africa in the Super 8s, winning against the co-hosts and going down to the other two.
Jos Buttler is easily the best T20 batter for a reason. The veteran batter has plenty of records to boast, adding another one to his tally during the USA game in Super 8s of the T20 World Cup the other night. Chasing a moderate 116, Buttler went berserk, whacking an unbeaten 83 off 38 balls, including eight massive sixes. That inning included an over of USA off-spinner Harmeet Singh, who conceded 32 runs – second most in T20Is, with Buttler hitting him for five sixes in that over.

The right-hander smashed the slow left-armer to all parts of the ground, becoming only the second batter after India’s Yuvraj Singh to hit five sixes in an over in T20Is. Notably, Yuvraj hit six sixes in an over against England’s Stuart Broad during the inaugural edition.

Meanwhile, Buttler was on song against the tournament debutants, the USA, with Phil Salt playing a handy knock to ensure England won the match within the asked period to qualify for the semis. They completed the run chase inside ten overs, finishing as the group leaders, something Buttler always wanted.

"Yeah, it was, absolutely," Buttler replied when asked if topping the group was their ultimate aim.

"You've got to earn the right to start with, to try and get in, and then once we got through a few overs, we were really trying to target the [short] side with the wind. We paid the USA a lot of respect, but when we came here, we talked a lot about our intensity. If we could bring that on the field, we thought we'd be too good,” he continued.

Although the defending champions struggled throughout the tournament, with their draw against Scotland, loss to Australia (in the Group Stage) and narrow defeat to South Africa in the Super 8s, they stood up when the chips were down, proving why they deserve to play the semis.

Buttler praises hat-trick taker Jordan

Chris Jordan created history in Barbados, his birthplace, by picking a hat-trick and becoming the first English men’s player to do so in T20Is. He picked four wickets in total, all coming in the 19th over.

WATCH VIDEO - View this post on Instagram A post shared by ICC (@icc) × The right-hander smashed the slow left-armer to all parts of the ground, becoming only the second batter after India’s Yuvraj Singh to hit five sixes in an over in T20Is. ALSO READ: T20 World Cup: Rohit’s Team India eye redemption against Australia as semis spot on the line "Yeah, it was, absolutely," Buttler replied when asked if topping the group was their ultimate aim. Buttler praises hat-trick taker Jordan Chris Jordan created history in Barbados, his birthplace, by picking a hat-trick and becoming the first English men’s player to do so in T20Is. He picked four wickets in total, all coming in the 19th over. 5 Sixes in one over! England’s Jos Buttler hammers USA’s Harmeet Singh in record run chase at T20 WC – WATCH

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian Team has a chance to knock Australia out of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. With the semis spot on the line and redemption in mind, India will be upbeat to end Australia’s campaign, with their match taking place in St Lucia on Monday (June 24).

Meanwhile, after Australia’s shocking loss at the hands of Afghanistan in the Group A Super 8 clash earlier, the only way they can cruise ahead is by beating India, something Aussie captain Mitchell Marsh is confident about.

Here is the match preview and result prediction of the India vs Australia Super 8 match in T20 WC.

Match Preview

India vs Australia is a blockbuster tie any day of the week, and with what is on the line this time, it makes this a grander affair in St. Lucia in Super 8s. Meeting for the first time since the 50-over WC final on November 19 last year, where Australia crushed a billion hopes with a sixth world title, Team India is ready to give it back.

The unbeaten yet far-from-convincing Indian Team has won both games in Super 8s, beating Afghanistan and Bangladesh, respectively, but they are yet to confirm their place in the final four. Although they are sitting at the top of Group A ahead of this marquee clash, mathematically, India can still get ruled out from the semis race.

However, looking at the positives, it begins from the number three position, where Rishabh Pant bats, with Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya adding value to the batting order.

Though Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja are yet to come in handy with the ball, India will rely on its bowling trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and star performer Kuldeep Yadav to hit the final nail in the coffin.

Australia not ready to bow out yet

The former champions will not bow down and let this opportunity go to waste.

Despite losing to Afghanistan, they will still enter this contest as favourites, with a settled unit at the helm waiting to unleash, especially when the chips are down. Considering it is a do-or-die situation for them, Australians are bound to bring their A-game to the forum.

Besides, the world cannot wait to witness a contest between Travis Head and Jasprit Bumrah, two superb performers from each camp.

Weather Report –

Rain will likely interrupt this marquee India vs Australia game in St. Lucia.

Result Prediction –

Though Australia will be hungrier to beat India and seal their ticket for the final four, India’s run in this tournament gives them the edge over their mighty nemesis.

T20 World Cup: Team India eye redemption against Australia with semis spot on the line

In one of the biggest upsets of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Afghanistan has beaten Australia by 21 runs in Super 8s in Kingstown to avenge last year’s World Cup loss at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Afghanistan registered their maiden win over Australia across formats, with prospects of who will top Group A wide open. Star Aussie seamer Pat Cummins again made headlines with his second successive hat-trick in the tournament being held in the US and West Indies.

Afghan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib was the star with the ball in hand, picking four wickets for 20 runs, while seamer Naveen-ul-Haq returned with three wickets going for the same number of runs. Besides, another hundred-plus stand between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran was instrumental in Afghanistan putting up a fighting total on the board.

Australia elected to bowl first after winning the toss. With Ashton Agar replacing Mitchell Starc at the top, the Aussies failed to make an impact early on as Gurbaz and Zadran put up another show in this competition. Both played per how the conditions demanded as Gurbaz top-scored with 61 runs, smashing four sixes and as many fours, and Zadran also struck 51, hitting six boundaries.

Marcus Stoinis broke the 118-run opening stand, with the Aussies picking three quick wickets inside the next three overs.

However, for the second time in two straight games, seamer Pat Cummins picked a T20 WC hat-trick, becoming the first bowler to achieve this feat in the shortest format.

That put brakes on Afghanistan’s inning as they finished on 148 for six in 20 overs.

Maxwell couldn’t repeat Mumbai heroics

The mighty Australians lost three wickets inside the Powerplay, with none of the top-order batters able to weather the Afghani storm. Afghanistan’s nemesis, Glenn Maxwell, became the centre of attraction, smashing a crucial fifty.

Though the ‘Big Show’ cracked some blows this time also, the wickets continued to tumble on the other hand, keeping the Aussie camp worried. Naib, the eighth bowler used by Captain Rashid Khan, was the game-changer for them as he tore into the Australian middle order to put their backs against the walls.

Despite batting deep till number eight, Australia failed to hold on to them as they got all out on 127, losing this match by 21 runs.

Even after the loss, they sit in the second position in Group A with one win in two games and, more importantly, a better NRR. While Australia’s last Super 8 game is against India on Monday in St. Lucia, Afghanistan will take on Bangladesh at Kingstown on the same day.

For Australia to qualify for the semis, they have to beat India, or if India wins, Australia must hope for Bangladesh to beat Afghanistan, keeping Australia’s NRR ahead of them.

Maxwell couldn’t repeat Mumbai heroics The mighty Australians lost three wickets inside the Powerplay, with none of the top-order batters able to weather the Afghani storm.

T20 World Cup: Afghanistan shock Australia in major upset after Cummins’ second hat-trick

Australia seamer Pat Cummins became just the second man in cricket history to pick two hat-tricks in successive games, with former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram being the first. Though Cummins picked three wickets across two overs – similar to how he bagged against Bangladesh in the previous game, his heroic feat failed to win the game for Australia. On the other hand, Afghanistan’s bowling coach for this tournament, Dwayne Bravo, celebrated his team’s maiden win over the Oz by dancing to his famous album ‘Champion’ in the team bus.

Beginning with Cummins’ feat, he removed Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib to complete his second T20I hat-trick. Cummins is the second Australian bowler after pace great Brett Lee to pick a T20 World Cup hat-trick.

Cummins record-breaking hat-trick to Bravo’s ‘Champion’ dance – Relive best moments from AUS-AFG T20 WC game

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh knows that winning their final Super 8 match is the only way to cruise to the 2024 T20 World Cup semis after what transpired in Kingstown against Afghanistan. A shocking 21-run loss at the hands of the Rashid Khan-led Afghan team complicates Australia's final four chances, but Marsh feels good about taking on the spirited and unbeaten Indian Team on Monday in St Lucia.

Afghanistan avenged the 2023 World Cup loss at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai with a stunning win on Sunday (June 23) in the format they have prospered lately. With their performances in this edition blowing the roof off, having beaten New Zealand in the Group Stages earlier, Afghanistan remains in contention for an improbable semis spot.

Speaking to the media after their second Super 8 game, Marsh sounded disappointed with the result, saying they got outplayed across all departments and that it was an off-night for them on the field, which he and his team owned up to.

The lanky all-rounder also spoke about the toss, where, considering the team batting first has won most games in this competition, Australia elected to bowl first.

"They got 20 too many. And to be honest, they played a really good game of cricket. We were outplayed tonight. (On not batting first, based on ground stats) We did think about it. A lot of teams have bowled first at this World Cup to get an idea of the surface. Don't think we lost at the toss. It was an off-night for us in the field, and we own that,” Marsh said.

With India next in line, Australia knows they have a mountain to climb. However, Marsh feels that the Aussies having beaten the Men the Blue lately (across formats and on bigger stages) gives them a psychological advantage, and they wish to make the most of this in the do-or-die clash.

“We'll be back next game. It wasn't an easy wicket, but both teams played on this surface. (India next...) First and foremost, it becomes clear for us. We need to win, and no better team to do it against. Full credit to Afghanistan for tonight, and we move on quickly,” he continued.

Rashid lauds teammates

With Afghanistan trying as many as eight bowlers, with the match-winner Gulbadin Naib (who picked four for 20) being the eighth one, Captain Rashid feels having a few all-rounders gives him more options and he is happy to make the most of it.

"The beauty of this team is having too many all-rounders gives you options. As a captain, it makes it easy,” Rashid said after a massive win.

Reflecting on his team’s performance, Rashid said they came close to beating Australia twice in the last two years but failed; feeling glad to cross the line this time. The star bowler added this win is for the Afghanistan fans.

"It's a massive win for us as a team and as a nation. In the World Cup, beating champions is a great feeling. It's something we missed in the last two years - in the 2023 World Cup and also in 2022 in Australia, where we lacked some runs.

"It is so much important for people at home and for everyone all over the world where Afghans are there. They were badly missing this win. I am sure they would be proud of this and would have enjoyed the game. It is just the beginning for us, big game next, and we have all the chances of making the semis,” he concluded.

T20 WC: ‘No better team to do it against' - Marsh warns India as semis scenario complicated after AFG win

The cricketing world is in disbelief over what unfolded in Kingstown, with Afghanistan beating Australia in a T20 World Cup classic, avenging last year’s World Cup loss they suffered at the hands of the mighty Aussies. Though the fans from the sub-continent cannot stop celebrating this feat, the Australian Team knows what lies between them (facing India in their last Super 8 match) and the semis spot. Meanwhile, several former stars and broadcasters took to social media to congratulate Afghanistan on this clinical win.

For Afghanistan, there were more than a couple of protagonists in this massive win. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran completed their third hundred-plus stand in this T20 World Cup, with Gurbaz top-scoring with 61 while Zadran hit 51 off 48 balls.

In the bowling department, all-rounder Gulbadin Naib starred with a four-wicket haul, including picking Glenn Maxwell on 59. Seamer Naveen-ul-Haq also returned with three wickets for 20 runs, as Afghanistan stunned former champions with a dominating show.

Pat Cummins created history by picking his second-straight T20 WC hat-trick against Afghanistan, removing three batters on three balls across two overs – similar to his show against Bangladesh in the previous match.

Now, considering that Group A is wide open, with all four teams in contention for a semis spot, the remaining two matches (in Super 8) between Australia and India and Bangladesh and Afghanistan will decide the fate of the two teams cruising ahead.

ALSO READ: T20 World Cup: Afghanistan shock Australia in major upset after Cummins’ second hat-trick In the bowling department, all-rounder Gulbadin Naib starred with a four-wicket haul, including picking Glenn Maxwell on 59. Let’s see how social media reacted to Afghanistan’s stunning win over the mighty Aussies in this T20 World Cup. Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. Afg are good enough to beat any team on their day. They played to their potential today and defeated a very good Aus team. A fact that should be celebrated. ‘It’s not an upset’ – Cricket world reacts to Afghanistan’s historic win over Australia in Super 8s of T20 WC

West Indies opener Shai Hope smashed an unbeaten 82 against the USA in their Super 8 tie in Barbados to keep his team’s chances alive in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Hope’s whirlwind knock helped West Indies chase a moderate 129 inside 11 overs with nine wickets remaining, as USA’s dream run at the showpiece event ends. This result, however, tightened the semis race as all three of WI, England, and South Africa could cruise ahead from Group B.

South Africa keeper-batter Quinton de Kock credited the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) experience for his game-changing inning against England in their crucial Super 8 T20 World Cup clash in St Lucia. De Kock slammed an impressive 65 off 38 balls, with most of his runs coming inside the first six overs, which later turned out to be the difference as Proteas beat England by seven runs in a thriller.

Having played seven matches for Barbados Royals in CPL 2022, three of which were played at Gros Islet – two day games and one under the lights, De Kock knew the par score (163/6) during morning matches would be significantly low in comparison to the ones played at night.

Besides, he also knew that Powerplay was the best chance for him to score runs, where he hit 49 off 20 balls, including whacking sixes off Jofra Archer (twice) and one each to Moeen Ali and Sam Curran.

"I've played a lot of day T20 cricket in the West Indies, and generally that is the most important time to score runs," De Kock said of his impactful knock against England in Super 8s.

“I don't know if the rest of the guys knew, but I had a fair sense: I've played here quite a bit in the Caribbean league, and it's the same thing: the wicket looks beautiful. At night, it plays most different, but in the day, 160-170 are winning scores here in the day. Generally, it goes like that in the Caribbean: I think the lights and maybe a bit of dew at night help the ball skid on a bit better.

“The easier time to score runs is in the Powerplay. When the ball's old and as the wicket deteriorates, it gets harder,” he continued.

‘Powerplay was the difference’

Although 160-plus looked chaseable on the wicket on which England hammered West Indies in the run-chase in their previous game, they failed to get past the winning line despite a stunning 78-run stand for the fifth wicket between Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone.

Reflecting on the nature of this wicket, England Captain Jos Buttler said, "It looked a similar wicket. This has been, so far in the tournament, the best batting pitch… I think the wicket was probably a little bit slower than everyone expected. 160 was about a par score. We bowled really well in the back 10-15 overs to restrict them,” he added.

Speaking highly of De Kock’s knock in the Powerplay, Butter continued, "I felt like the Powerplay was the difference in the game, and the way Quinny (De Kock) could bat at the rate that none of us could bat at… I think the way Quinny played at the top really put us under a lot of pressure.”

Meanwhile, England and South Africa are in the race for a semis spot. England will face the USA in their final Super 8 match, while South Africa and West Indies will square off in a virtual knockout in their slated tie.

De Kock explains how CPL experience helped him gain advantage over England in crucial Super 8 clash at T20 WC

The Indian Cricket Team is one step closer to sealing their semis berth at the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup but are also aware of the challenges that come along while facing Bangladesh in the shortest format, as both teams set for their marquee Super 8 tie in Antigua on Saturday (June 22). The Men in Blue sit in a commanding position on the points table, and a win over their Asian opponents will confirm their ticket in the final four.

Here is the preview and result prediction of the India vs Bangladesh Super 8 match at T20 WC.

Preview

India hold the upper hand in this tally, having won on all occasions before in this competition. After how they beat Afghanistan in their first Super 8 match, the Men in Blue look confident of maintaining their winning run.

Although their combination looks sorted on paper, they still have a few worries to iron out, including Virat Kohli’s batting position and Shivam Dube’s form. While both continue to struggle in this tournament, India might stick with Kohli, probably bringing him back to his best position (number three), replacing him with Yashasvi Jaiswal to open alongside Captain Rohit Sharma.

In that case, Dube makes way for Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant, who has done well so far at number three, might get demoted to number five. With Suryakumar Yadav at four and Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel to follow, India’s batting line-up is intimidating for any opposition.

Ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, with Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav to play as remaining bowlers.

The Bangladeshi side will enter the contest following a lacklustre showing against the mighty Aussies in their first Super 8 tie, losing the rain-hit game by 28 runs. A team filled with unbelievable talent is yet to produce a dominating performance in this tournament, and with India on the opposite side on Saturday, they can hope to make this day theirs.

Besides, India must also be wary of their bowling attack, consisting of two-seamers on the top of their prowess – Tanzim Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman, with rookie spinner Rishad Hossain to come in later.

Result Prediction –

Irrespective of the threat Bangladesh brings to the table, they are unlikely to topple India in this Super 8 match in Antigua.

Predicted Playing XIs of both teams –

India - Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh

Preview India hold the upper hand in this tally, having won on all occasions before in this competition. ALSO READ: T20 World Cup: Shai Hope’s whirlwind 82* ends USA’s dream run as semis race tightens Ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack, with Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav to play as remaining bowlers. Result Prediction – Irrespective of the threat Bangladesh brings to the table, they are unlikely to topple India in this Super 8 match in Antigua. Predicted Playing XIs of both teams – India - Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh Bangladesh - Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain, Litton Kumar Das, Shakib al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Tanzim Sakib

India eye semis berth but remain wary of Bangladesh challenge in Super 8s at T20 World Cup

India is on a winning run in this ongoing showpiece event in the Americas, much like how they were last year during the 50-over World Cup at home. And although they had a separate yet settled opening pair playing through all patches, they still made little tweaks to stay ahead of everyone. Likewise, at the 2024 T20 World Cup, they must consider changing the winning XI to ensure a smooth and attacking batting line-up with the tournament entering its business end.

Where does the problem lie?

Having the opening pair of Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli looks best for a fantasy app, but the idea doesn’t seem to work anywhere close to what the coach and management thought it would.

Though Virat’s T20I numbers are exceptional, he has failed to put value on his wicket in four outings thus far in the tournament. With three single-digit scores, including a zero against the USA, Kohli hasn’t looked in his element this time. That puts pressure on already out-of-touch and ageing Rohit Sharma to score upfront, which he clearly hasn't done.

ALSO READ: PCB demands evidence against match-fixing allegations; calls for journalists, YouTubers to provide proof

Rishabh Pant’s promotion and form at number three, with ace T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav providing a cushion at number four is what saved Team India from any embarrassment.

Although the situation doesn’t look as grave, bringing in Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top, dropping Kohli to his favourite position at three, and demoting Pant to number five, where he played most of his white-ball cricket, even in the IPL, can bring more balance to the side.

Considering his form, Jaiswal’s inclusion can boost India’s Powerplay numbers, allowing them to go all out from the ball one – a precedent used by most teams in this format.

Why change Pant’s batting position?

Although there aren’t many explanations that can justify this, for the greater good, this looks like a viable solution.

Rishabh batting at number five will kick out-of-touch Shivam Dube from the playing XI, with the team having ample options from SKY to Pant to Hardik Pandya and even Ravindra Jadeja to try from in a dire situation.

Why Jaiswal must play the Bangladesh game?

After beating Afghanistan convincingly, India has at least one foot in the semis, and for them to ensure their qualification, they must win one of their two remaining Super 8 matches (against Bangladesh and Australia).

With Bangladesh next and Australia at the end, Team India can experiment with this change in the XI and give Jaiswal two matches before the knockout stage arrives.

Should India consider changing winning XI to solve top-order woes at T20 WC? Probably yes!

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) demanded evidence of match-fixing allegations against the players after the team exited the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup after the first round. Losing to the co-hosts and tournament’s debutant, the USA, broke their confidence before arch-rivals India clinched a tight win to dent their chances of entering Super 8s. Although they won their match against Ireland, Pakistan failed to cruise ahead owing to the washout game against Canada, resulting in them falling behind the USA on the points table.

However, considering the rise of criticism culture in the country over the past few years, the fans, a few journalists, several former cricketers and countless YouTubers began hammering the team for their dismal show at the showpiece event. Although the board expected such a reaction from the fans, knowing how invested they are in their cricket, allegations of players getting involved in fixing-related activities escalated the whole matter.

Regardless of the formats, England and South Africa - the two top sides in world cricket, are up against each other in the Super 8 clash at the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. Both are capable of beating even the mightiest of teams on their days, but against each other, they have a lot more than just a semis spot to play for.

While the Proteas are unbeaten entering this contest, England emerged as tournament favourites after a daunting win over the co-hosts West Indies in their first Super 8 tie. The defending champions found their mojo against a high-flying West Indies side, winning the marquee clash by eight wickets. A win against South Africa in St. Lucia will seal their semis spot; so is the case with the Men in Green, who won their first match of Super 8s against the spirited USA Team.

Meanwhile, a high-scoring ground would see some of the maddest hitters of the cricket ball take centre stage, including the English trio of Captain Jos Buttler, Phil and Jonny Bairstow, while Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller will be there in the South African dressing room.

Starc bowled Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan for a second-ball duck to pick his 95th wicket across both competitions, surpassing Sri Lanka veteran Lasith Malinga (94) on this elite list.

Two years later, his performance at the 2023 World Cup, wherein he returned with 16 wickets, helped Australia win the 50-over WC for the record sixth time.

His contribution in all eight World Cups (three 50-over and five 20-over) keeps him head and shoulders ahead of everyone in terms of numbers, performance and impact.

Besides, with Australia set to play Afghanistan and India in the remaining Super 8 matches, Starc has a chance to reach triple digits. (With inputs from agencies)

T20 World Cup: Suryakumar, Bumrah help India crush Afghanistan in Super 8 match

England opener Phil Salt credited inputs from Kieron Pollard for his team's eight-wicket win over the co-hosts West Indies in their first Super 8 tie at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Pollard - hired specifically for this tournament as an assistant coach, made his experience count as England chased 181 inside 18 overs, with Salt and Bairstow remaining unbeaten on 87 and 48, respectively.

Speaking to the media on what Pollard brought to the table, Salt admitted the veteran T20 batter helped them work on constructing the run chase.

"Pollard's brought a lot to the group, but I'd say that's the most valuable thing I've taken so far is constructing that run chase," Salt said after his match-winning inning against West Indies.

"We've spoken a lot about taking eights from one side to take twelves from the other, and that's 200. So, it's really simple, it sounds so simple to say it, but putting that into action there wasn't really a point in time out there I knew I was, I slowed down, I knew I hadn't got much strike, but I knew that If I just get through that period, then we're going to be in a good position and I can have a good dip, a good calculated risk at the seamers,” he continued.

‘Win brings momentum’

Following England’s shaky start to the tournament, where they were on the brink of an early exit in the first round, the defending champions changed the narrative with a massive win over the home side. Salt, among their top-performing batter, admitted his confidence-building inning and England’s statement win is perhaps the first step in the right direction.

Answering questions about whether this England win reminds the players and fans of the last edition where they won the tournament despite being in a similar situation, Salt said, “I don't know if you can compare the two but it's definitely the first step in that direction.”

"I've already said, in tournament play, you need a bit of luck at the right time, and you need to build your momentum and confidence, and I feel like that's the first step in the right direction.

"I think firstly, it's a bit of confidence - you're going to get bored of me saying confidence and momentum, but it's a bit of confidence playing on this ground, knowing the conditions, knowing the dimensions, the wind, everything like that. Getting that momentum, that's how I see tournament cricket. The good sides that I've played in have all sort of come to the peak and at the right time,” he added.

Meanwhile, for England to qualify for the semis, they must win at least one of the remaining two matches against South Africa (June 21) and the USA (June 23).
