Dr Varsha Potdar, head of NIV Pune’s influenza division in a statement to the Hindustan Times stated that “the kit will be an easy, time saving and efficient way of detecting three infections through a single test. A single tube essentially means that using a person’s single sample, we will be able to diagnose multiple infections. Technicians will not have to test the sample separately.”

<h2>The kit’s usefulness&nbsp;</h2>

Dr Potdar explained the usefulness of the kit by adding that the symptoms of Influenza A, B and SARS-CoV-2 tend to overlap, making this kit particularly useful, especially during the flu season.&nbsp;

<h2>The commercialisation of the technology</h2>

Speaking to the media, Dr Potdar said that the National Institute of Virology, Pune, which is a constituent of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), on May 15, had invited expressions of interest (EoI) from companies to manufacture the kits in bulk. The institute is now ready to hand over the technology to licensees or manufacturers which will then commercialise the technology for vast usage across the country and the globe.&nbsp;

India's indigenous test kit to detect Influenza A, B and COVID-19 in a single swab

A male student at Shiv Nadar University in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday (May 18) shot dead his female batchmate from point-blank range on the campus and later shot himself in his hostel room.&nbsp;

The students, both aged 21, were in third-year sociology degree class. Sneha Chaurasia was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital and Anuj Singh died in his room. The shooting happened 10 minutes after Anuj sent a confessional statement to the university group at 1:18 pm titled "my suicide note."&nbsp;

The two met outside Dining Hall 2 around 1 pm local time. Both&nbsp;girls’ and boys’ hostels are located on either side of the hall. In the CCTV footage, the students were seen on the other side of the frosted glass having a conversation during which he gave her a hug and then fires at her twice, appearing to hide his gun in his bag. As she collapses on the ground he stands over her for a few seconds, leans once to check and then walks away.&nbsp;

However, there are reports stating that&nbsp;the boy was giving her something, presumably a gift, and she could be seen refusing the parcel following which he shot her.&nbsp;

The police officials received a call from university students at 1:30 pm. After reaching the spot, the officials found Sneha covered in a pool of blood. She died of the two bullet injuries in her stomach and chest while Anuj shot himself in the head.&nbsp;

Dr Sunil Balyan, the medical superintendent at the Yatharth hospital where Sneha was brought to the emergency room said, "Our teams checked her and she was pronounced brought dead. Thereafter, we informed the police and handed over the body for postmortem."

What led to this tragic incident?

As per investigators, the two&nbsp;have been in a relationship for a year and a half&nbsp;but broke up in December 2022. This&nbsp;left Anuj shattered as she started seeing someone else. In the video recorded and uploaded on Google Drive, Anuj towards the end said he is in the third stage of brain cancer and does not have much longer to live. In the mail he sent, he&nbsp;made a request to "not create any problems" for his and Sneha's parents and signed off by requesting forgiveness.&nbsp;

Police official Sarthak Sengar said&nbsp;that the officials are still investigating where Anuj got the pistol from.&nbsp;

Students alarmed over security leniency

Students told police officials that security personnel check bags and hostel rooms every day but no one knows how this tragedy happened.&nbsp;

A fourth-year student told Times of India newspaper that he heard gunshots from his hotel room.

He said, "The first time it came from near the canteen. Within a few minutes, I heard another shot, which was in the next building. The girl was in a bad condition when the guards found her. They called the ambulance and police."

While a PhD student at the university said that currently all undergraduate students are on a semester break and only master's and PhD students are in campus. However, some undergraduates stayed back with special permission from the professors.&nbsp;

It wasn't immediately clear if Sneha too was staying back or was about to leave in a day or two. Sneha's family is based in Kanpur and Anuj's in Amroha.

India's maritime force said that this maiden effort depicts the Navy's future-proof warfare readiness and commitment towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

"Indian Navy's latest indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao successfully carried out engagement of sea-skimming supersonic target. This maiden endeavour showcases IN's Future Proof Combat Readiness and commitment towards Aatma Nirbhar Bharat," the Indian Navy said in a statement.

Mormugao, which is named after the historic port city of Goa on the west coast, coincidentally launched its first sea attack on December 19, 2021. This was when Goa celebrated 60 years of independence from Portuguese rule.

The Indian Navy said that the ship, which measures 163 m in length, and 17m in breadth with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes, can rightfully be considered one of the most powerful warships to have been constructed in India.

<h2>India performs maiden test of sea-based ballistic missile interceptor</h2>

Last month, India's ambitious ballistic missile defence system achieved success with the first flight test of an endo-atmospheric interceptor missile from a ship in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha.

By engaging and neutralising a hostile ballistic missile threat, the sea-based missile's trial on Friday, according to the defence ministry, placed India into a select group of countries with such a capability.

AWACS (airborne warning and control systems) and other hostile aircraft, as well as approaching long-range nuclear missiles, can be intercepted by BMDs.

The Indian Navy and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) were commended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the successful testing of the ship-based ballistic missile defence (BMD) system's capabilities.

"The DRDO and the Indian Navy successfully conducted a maiden flight trial of sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal on April 21," the ministry said in a statement.

<h2>India joins the elite club</h2>

India has been working to improve its ability to intercept enemy ballistic missiles both inside and outside of the atmosphere of the earth.&nbsp;

The endo-atmospheric missiles are those that function within the earth's atmosphere and have a range of less than 100 kilometres. According to specialists, exo-atmospheric missiles are capable of completing missions in the uppermost part of the earth's atmosphere.

India's phase-II ballistic missile defence interceptor AD-1, which can engage a wide variety of targets, successfully completed its first flight test in November.

Long-range ballistic missiles and planes can be intercepted by the AD-1 long-range interceptor missile in both "low exo-atmospheric" and "endo-atmospheric" settings.&nbsp;

Talking about India-Australia relations, she said, "This visit was supposed to be Quad Summit, but that being cancelled, PM Modi made an effort to come here for a very important bilateral with PM. This is quite a significant meeting for India and Australia. It shows our strong relationship and it is a new chapter for both countries be it in trade, geopolitics, and our diverse Diaspora."

Meeting the Indian Diaspora

When asked about PM Modi's meeting with the Indian Diaspora, the former Australian Senator said, "This is where people really carry two hearts. Their homes are in India and Australia. Our Diaspora is one&nbsp;million and growing, and cultural diplomacy&nbsp;brewing people-to-people links is significant. It is important to note that he is holding a Diaspora event. It shows the strength of India - Australia relationships, beyond hard power, military, and politics and based on cultural diversity and people-to-people link. On being quizzed about the economic partnership between the two countries, she said, "The signing of the ECTA agreement was significant. Both nations need diversification. We have India - geopolitical convergence now with India having issues with China, we have a stronger foundation and reasons to look for trade with each other."&nbsp;

"China's assertiveness is outside of international law and order. India and Australia are countries that follow law and order and believe in multilateralism, but for now, the countries playing by rule for the Indo - Pacific region are India and Australia to make sure peace in the Indo-Pacific region," she added.

"Anything that disrupts the Australian way of life is a law and order situation. The vandalism in Hindu temples is being investigated by our authorities. We believe in diversity, we have many cultures here and that is our strength," she said.
