Monaco's Wilfried Singo apologised to Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on Thursday after the Italian suffered a gruesome facial injury as a result of a collision between the two during a Ligue 1 match.
Donnarumma was left requiring 10 staples after suffering lacerations to the right side of his face when he was caught by the studs of Singo during PSG's 4-2 win in the principality on Wednesday.

"I'd like to apologise to Gianluigi Donnarumma. My act was obviously not intentional, but I was able to see afterwards that he had a serious injury to his face," Singo wrote on Instagram.
He then addressed the shotstopper directly, saying "I wish you a good recovery".
Donnarumma was unable to continue after the challenge early in the match and was replaced by Matvey Safonov.
He will undergo "medical examinations on Thursday and will have to remain inactive for several days", a statement from PSG said.
Footage published by PSG showed the two players greeting each other in the stadium after the final whistle, with the Italian telling the Ivorian: "Everything's fine, no worries."
Singo, already on a booking, did not receive a red or yellow card for the challenge, which the referee adjudged to have been "part of the action", according to PSG captain Marquinhos.
Monaco announced Thursday that the defender has been subject to racist insults on social media in the aftermath of the incident.
"(Monaco condemns) in the strongest possible terms the unacceptable racist comments made about Wilfried Singo on social media after the match," the club said in a statement. "Such behaviour has no place in sport, either on or off the pitch, and is totally at odds with the values that the club stands for."

Monaco's Singo apologises to PSG keeper Donnarumma for gruesome face injury

London, UK
The US-based Friedkin Group have completed the takeover of Everton, the Premier League club announced Thursday.
Everton said the club had been acquired by Roundhouse Capital Holdings Limited, an entity within the Friedkin Group.

The Premier League said the Friedkin Group had purchased a 98.8 percent stake in Everton, which becomes the 10th English top-flight club under majority American ownership -- a list that includes Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.
Thursday's announcement came after Everton said in September the Friedkin Group had agreed to buy Farhad Moshiri's majority stake in the struggling side subject to regulatory approval -- which has now been granted by the Premier League, Women's Professional Leagues Limited, the Football Association and the Financial Conduct Authority.
The BBC reported the Friedkin Group's deal to buy Everton was worth in excess of £400 million ($506 million).
The Texas-based group is led by chairman Dan Friedkin and also owns Italian Serie A club Roma. Friedkin has a net worth of £6.16 billion, according to Forbes.
Everton have twice been sanctioned under the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) in the last 13 months, and had eight points in total deducted last season.
American investment firm 777 Partners were unable to complete a deal earlier this year.
John Textor, who has a 45 percent share in Crystal Palace, had appeared to be in the frame before Everton confirmed they were entering into an agreement with the Friedkin Group.
Everton are putting the finishing touches to a new stadium and are preparing to leave Goodison Park, which has been the club's home since 1892.
They are currently 16th in the Premier League table, just three points above the relegation zone.
Everton have remained in the English top flight for the last 70 years but have survived several battles to avoid relegation in recent seasons.
The Liverpool-based club posted losses of just under £400 million ($534 million) for the four years between 2019 and 2023.
British-Iranian businessman Moshiri first bought a 49.9 percent stake in Everton in 2016, before increasing his holding to 94.1 percent in 2022.
<h2>'Great institution'</h2>
Despite their recent struggles, Everton are one of England's most historic clubs. Only Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have won more top-flight titles than their total of nine.
Friedkin, in an open letter, said: "I take immense pride in welcoming one of England's most historic football clubs to our global family, the Friedkin Group. Everton represents a proud legacy, and we are honoured to become custodians of this great institution."
Incoming executive chairman Marc Watts said: "Providing immediate financial stability to the club has been a key priority, and we are delighted to have achieved this.
Everton were last crowned champions of England in the 1986/87 season and have not won a major trophy since 1995.
But Watts added: "While restoring Everton to its rightful place in the Premier League table will take time, today is the first step in that journey."
Moshiri welcomed the deal by saying: "I truly believe that the transaction with The Friedkin Group is the best outcome for the club and its future success."
Everton, managed by Sean Dyche, are at home to second-placed Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday with Friedkin Group representatives expected to be in attendance at Goodison Park.

Football - Friedkin Group completes Everton takeover for over $506mn, club confirms

A Paris court on Thursday sentenced a brother of France midfielder Paul Pogba to a three-year prison term, with two years suspended, after convicting him in a high-profile extortion case.

Mathias Pogba will be able to serve his one-year sentence with an electronic bracelet rather than behind bars.

The court also fined Paul Pogba's brother 20,000 euros for participating in the attempted extortion of 13 million euros ($13.5 million) from Pogba in 2022, and for putting pressure on the player, his family and his business contacts to obtain the payment.

The case involving six men linked to Paul Pogba has shocked the French football world because the alleged perpetrators included three childhood friends and Pogba's own brother.

The five other defendants were found guilty of extortion, kidnapping and detention, as well as participation in a criminal association, and sentenced to up to eight years in prison, as well as fines of between 20,000 euros and 40,000 euros.

Roushdane K., considered to be the mastermind of the case and the only person to appear in custody, was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment.

Mathias Pogba's lawyer Mbeko Tabula said the ruling was "extremely harsh," adding he planned to appeal.

"He's obviously in a state of shock," he said of his client. "From the outset, he has maintained his innocence, saying that he was manipulated, that he was coerced, that he was pressured, that he would never have acted negatively towards his brother."

Mathias was the one to go public in the case, publishing a video on social media in August 2022 promising revelations about his younger brother that were "likely to be explosive".

Pogba told French investigators he had in March 2022 been "tricked by childhood friends" from the gritty Paris suburb where he and Mathias grew up.

He accused them of snatching him before he was held at gunpoint by two hooded men with assault rifles, demanding 13 million euros for "services rendered" and blaming him for not helping them financially.

Pogba said at the time that he had paid them only 100,000 euros.

Known as the 'Emperor of Herentals' after the Belgian city where he lived, Van Looy delivered newspapers on his bicycle from the age of 12, turned professional at 20 and went on to chalk up 371 pro victories.
He was a specialist in the one-day classics in his heyday in the 1950s and '60s, becoming the first cyclist, before Merckx and Roger De Vlaeminck, to win at least once all five of cycling's monuments - Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Tour of Lombardy.
He was the only rider to have won all the classics of his era, 16 in total including eight monuments, something that Merckx, who never won Paris-Tours, was unable to do.  "Rik was an immense champion, an absolute icon with an incredible record of achievements," said Merckx, who was Van Looy's team-mate for one season in 1965, in a statement.  "Rik was a super champion who was almost unbeatable in the classics. I'm happy to have been able to race against him."

The 79-year-old revealed that Van Looy had contacted him 10 days ago to wish him well after Merckx had fallen from his bike, necessitating a hip replacement.  "Even though he was ill, he took the trouble to call me when I was in hospital after my crash," said Merckx. "It wasn't until last month that his condition deteriorated rapidly. A few days ago, I gave him some words of encouragement myself."
Aside from his one-day success Van Looy claimed numerous stages on all the three big Tours in France, Italy and Spain and won the world road race title in 1960 and 1961.

Belgian cycling legend Rik Van Looy passes away at 90

Old Trafford, UK
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said he wants to keep Marcus Rashford in his squad after the local hero suggested he could leave Old Trafford for a "new challenge".
The 27-year-old, who was left out of last weekend's derby against Manchester City, came through United's youth ranks and has chalked up 138 goals in 426 appearances for the club since making his debut in 2016.

However, he has struggled for form over the last 18 months, losing his place in England's squad for the Euros in the summer.
Amorim's bold decision to leave out the forward against City was followed by Rashford's interview with British journalist Henry Winter on social media on Tuesday in which the forward revealed he was ready to end his 20-year association with United.
Rashford's comments were put to Amorim at a Wednesday press conference scheduled to preview nominally the club's League Cup quarter-final at Tottenham.
"No (I've not spoken to him)," Amorim said. "Not yet. It was yesterday (when) I gave the day off to the lads, so he's our player and he's ready for the next game."
Asked if he would be happy to retain Rashford in his squad, the recently-arrived Amorim replied: "Of course, because this kind of club needs big talents and he's a big talent.
"So, he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus."
Amorim added the "new challenge" Rashford spoke of could be found at Old Trafford in trying to revive the fortunes of United, once the dominant force in English football, but now a lowly 13th in the Premier League.
"We have here a new challenge, it's a tough one," he said. "For me, it's the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I already said that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
"So, this is a really new challenge and the biggest one. I hope all my players are ready for this new challenge."

New Delhi, India
Saudi Arabia is the second country in the Gulf to get hosting rights for a FIFA World Cup. In a jaw-dropping announcement earlier, Saudi was named the host of the 2034 edition, 12 years after Qatar hosted this sporting spectacle for the first time. However, unlike in Qatar, where the government made a U-turn a few days after announcing no liquor for fans during the event, Saudi has cleared its stance, saying no alcohol will be served during, before or after the tournament.
During the 2022 mega event, which Lionel Messi-led Argentina won by beating the defending champions France in the penalty shoot-out, Qatar relaxed its alcohol laws.

Though they barred everyone from consuming liquor during any game inside the stadium or its premises, the government allowed foreign citizens to purchase it from specific stores and drink in waterholes in select hotels in the capital city of Doha.
Per the latest report, Saudi is highly unlikely to relax any laws around it for the showpiece event.
“FIFA sources told the Guardian there were no plans to pressure the Saudi government to relax their laws. FIFA has not publicly addressed the matter, but insiders confirmed that there will be no beer sales at matches,” a Guardian report claimed.
<h2>'Stay home if you cannot respect rules'</h2>
Meanwhile, Saudi banned alcohol, including its sale and consumption since 1952, even for foreign citizens, with the violation inviting fines, jail, public flogging or even deportation. Considering the harsh punishments, European and American fans were seemingly concerned and disappointed when FIFA allotted the 2034 edition to Saudi Arabia.
Their liquor laws are strict enough not to allow even the luxury hotels in the country to sell alcohol.
Last year, Saudi Arabia’s sports minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, in a chat with Sky News, said it would not be possible to lift some of its restrictions, adding ‘the World Cup is for everyone’ and that those who feel uncomfortable about it can avoid travelling.
“If you are against that, and you don’t feel like you’re going to enjoy your time coming, and you can’t respect that rule, then don’t come. It’s as simple as that,” a report in the Indian Express said.
Besides, he said that hundreds of sporting events have taken place in Saudi and all have been dry events, including Saudi GP, where the drivers sprinkle rose water instead of spraying wine.
“We’ve had over 100 global sporting events that have already taken place in Saudi Arabia. No alcohol was served in those tournaments. We had three million sports fans come in and enjoy those tournaments that have come and come again,” he said in a chat with Reuters last year.

No alcohol for fans during FIFA World Cup 2034 in Saudi Arabia – Report

Brasília, Brazil
Brazil legend Ronaldo has confirmed he wants to become president of the country's football governing body to address a "deep crisis" the sport is facing nationally.
"I have hundreds of motivations, but I think the biggest of them is really to restore international respect to Brazilian football," he said in an interview on Monday with the Globoesporte website.

Ronaldo said he wanted to be an "alternative for significant change" as candidate for the job of running the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
"O Fenomeno" ("The Phenomenon"), as the 48-year-old became known over the course of his 1993-2011 career, said he wants to use the CBF presidency to help Brazil's national team to regain its glory as five-time world champions.
"The Selecao has to recover its prestige. I'll do everything so that the players understand the historic importance of playing for the national team," he said.
Ronaldo scored both goals when Brazil beat Germany in the 2002 World Cup final in Japan, and was twice winner of the Ballon d'Or.
To lodge his CBF candidacy, he needs the support of Brazilian regional clubs and federations.
To get those, he promised to travel "all around Brazil" and share the "incredible plans" he has for the sport.
The date of the next CBF election has not yet been set, but should happen between March 2025 and March 2026, according to Brazilian media.
<h2>'Much deeper problem'</h2>
Current CBF chief Ednaldo Rodrigues has been criticized for slotting in temporary coaches for the national team after Tite's 2022 exit while waiting for Carlo Ancelotti to arrive -- something that did not happen when the Italian decided late last year to extend his contract as manager of Real Madrid.
Currently coached by Dorival Junior, the Selecao are fifth in South America qualifying for the 2026 World Cup tournament, seven points behind leaders Argentina.
"My problem is not Ednaldo. The problem is much deeper. My goal is to bring the people closer to the Selecao. Today, the people are indifferent when the Selecao plays," Ronaldo told Globoesporte. "I am an alternative of significant change for Brazilian football, which is going through a deep crisis," he said.
Ronaldo, a former star for Barcelona, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, already has leadership experience.
In 2018, he took majority control of Spain's Real Valladolid, and in 2021 did the same for Cruzeiro, the Brazilian club where he started his career.

In his interview, Ronaldo said he was in talks to "very soon" sell his Valladolid stake to avoid "any obstacle" to his CBF candidacy.

Ronaldo wants to run Brazil’s football to help regain its glory as world champions

Paris, France
Super League promoters on Tuesday revealed they have asked FIFA and UEFA for "official recognition" of their proposed competition, renamed the "Unify League", leaning on a ruling from Europe's top court.
A22 Sports Management said it sent the proposal after discussions with various leagues, clubs and other stakeholders, revising its qualification system to base participation on annual domestic performances. It has submitted plans for competitions featuring 96 teams divided into four leagues, running from September to April, followed by a knockout phase starting with the quarter-finals.

In a statement, A22 argued last year's European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling meant that "any competition where qualification is inclusive and meritocratic, and which complies with the overall match calendar can be officially established".
Promoters also said matches would be shown live for free via a streaming platform.
"Our extensive engagement with key stakeholders revealed a number of pressing challenges facing the sport including increasing subscription costs for fans, an overloaded player calendar, insufficient investment in women's football, and dissatisfaction with the format and governance of the current pan-European competitions," said A22 CEO Bernd Reichart said.
"Our proposal is designed to directly address these challenges."
<h2>Furious backlash</h2>
European football was hit with a bombshell in early 2021, when 12 of its biggest clubs announced they had signed up to the planned Super League, triggering a furious backlash from fans and a stark warning from UEFA that clubs and players who took parts would be barred from competitions like the World Cup.
Within 48 hours, nine of the 12 rebel clubs—including six from the English Premier League—backed down and the project collapsed, but Real Madrid and Barcelona remain strong supporters of it.
Last year, the ECJ ruled that UEFA had broken EU law by abusing its "dominant position" in European football to stifle an upstart breakaway league of elite clubs.
But when the firm promoting the Super League seized on the court victory to announce plans for a new 64-team tournament to compete with or replace UEFA's flagship Champions League, it was met with scorn and rejection.
In May, a Spanish court said FIFA and UEFA had "prevented free competition" by opposing the Super League, but UEFA insisted it did not explicitly support the creation of the Super League.
"The judgment does not give third parties the right to develop competitions without authorisation and does not concern any future project or indeed any modified version of an existing project," UEFA said at the time.
European football's governing body also pointed out that it had since brought in new rules to ensure it now complied with EU law.

A22 Sports Management said it sent the proposal after discussions with various leagues, clubs and other stakeholders, revising its qualification system to base participation on annual domestic performances.

Paris, France Super League promoters on Tuesday revealed they have asked FIFA and UEFA for "official recognition" of their proposed competition, renamed the "Unify League", leaning on a ruling from Europe's top court. "Our proposal is designed to directly address these challenges." FA suspends Chelsea forward Mykhailo Mudryk over failed drug test

India’s new chess sensation D Gukesh is full of admiration for legendary Viswanathan Anand after winning the World Chess Championship (WCC) on Thursday (Dec 12). In a marathon 14-game WCC showdown, Gukesh got the better of China’s Ding Liren to become the youngest champion at 18. After the win, Gukesh took to his X handle and recalled memories with Anand.

<h2>Gukesh admires Anand’s role</h2>
"Thanks @vishy64theking! Inspiration from the start joined waca, helped with Gaju and learnt a lot discussing Chess etc," tweeted Gukesh.
On Thursday, Gukesh won game 14 of the WCC to pocket the tournament with a score of 7.5-6.5. He became the second Indian after Anand in 2000 to win the WCC while also breaking Russian great Garry Kasparov’s record for the youngest champion.

<h2>What happened in the final?</h2>
Having ended game 13 in a draw after a marathon five-hour contest, Gukesh and Liren started defensively in the latest contest. Playing with the white pawns, Gukesh had a considerable time advantage at the start despite losing key pieces. By the 36th move of the game, the Indian had a 30-minute advantage while both were on the decadency of losing key pieces.
On the 37th move, Gukesh gave a check to Liren with his rook despite no chance of causing any terror. However, a swift response and some aggressive play by the Chinese star meant the game was heading into a draw.
However, the 18-year-old Indian had luck on his side when Liren decided to offer his rook up in his 55th move by placing it at f2, which turned out to be the Championship-deciding blunder. The move opened the gates for Gukesh to win his first World Championship on the 58th move.

During the 2022 mega event, which Lionel Messi-led Argentina won by beating the defending champions France in the penalty shoot-out, Qatar relaxed its alcohol laws.&nbsp;

Though they barred everyone from consuming liquor during any game inside the stadium or its premises, the government allowed foreign citizens to purchase it from specific stores and drink in waterholes in select hotels in the capital city of Doha.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Saudi banned alcohol, including its sale and consumption since 1952, even for foreign citizens, with the violation inviting fines, jail, public flogging or even deportation.

“If you are against that, and you don’t feel like you’re going to enjoy your time coming, and you can’t respect that rule, then don’t come. It’s as simple as that,” a report in the Indian Express said.&nbsp;
