Almost a day after dropping seven squad players and releasing two coaches after losing the Lord’s Test to England, the PCB has demanded a detailed explanation within the next 24 hours from the selection committee over Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq’s inclusions.
The latest reports suggest that the PCB has issued show-cause notices to the four-member selection committee, challenging their decisions to play Rizwan and Imam on away tours of the West Indies and England. The committee, comprising former cricketers, including Aaqib Javed, Asad Shafiq, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Misbah-ul-Haq, has less than a day to respond to the PCB.
Cricbuzz reports that a PCB spokesperson confirmed this development.
"As advised by competent authority, you are hereby requested to provide an explanation regarding the basis and rationale for the selection of the two players, including relevant selection criteria, performance considerations and any other factors taken into account during the selection process,” the formal wording read.
The PCB move comes following underwhelming performance from Rizwan on the English tour and mystery surrounding Imam’s left calf strain. Following a modest Caribbean tour with the bat, Rizwan’s returns against England in the first two Tests never helped Pakistan recover from any dire situation. Although most of their batters failed in the two Tests, where Pakistan didn’t cross 200 in four innings, Rizwan’s lack of game awareness cost Pakistan dearly, as they lost those matches and have conceded the three-match series. Rizwan scored 7, 1, 12 and 41 in four outings.

On the other hand, opener Imam-ul-Haq, who was amongst the seven players released from the squad, did not bat at Lord’s after suffering a left calf strain. Although he suffered that injury during the series opener at Headingley and batted in both innings with tape around, he did not play any role in Lord’s Test after tea on day one.
Imam was taken for scans, which later revealed the severity of his injury, with the team doctors suggesting he rest for 10 days.
Meanwhile, these developments came shortly after Misbah tendered his resignation on Tuesday (Sep 1), but reports suggested that the PCB has yet to accept it.
