The western US state of Montana is tenth on the list with a racial equality score of 57.70. Professor Terrell Strayhorn, Director of the Center for the Study of HBCUs, Virginia Union University, says that the reasons for racial wealth gaps in the US are mainly linked to social, historical and structural forces that work against some racial groups more than others.

Ninth on the list is Minnesota. The midwestern state has a racial equality score of 57.18, according to the WalletHub study shared with WION.

With a racial equality score of 55.90, Michigan takes the eighth spot in the list of US states with the least racial equality. "The undeniable truth is that racial wealth inequity persists in this country today because of the continued persistence of racism, discrimination, and bias", said Terrell Strayhorn.

The state of Mississippi is seventh on the list with a score of 55.19. According to Hephzibah V. Strmic-Pawl, Associate Professor, Manhattanville College, racial wealth differences are rooted in the past federal and state policies/practices that prevented fair wages, employment and education for people of colour.

According to the study, Louisiana is sixth on the list with a score of 53.68. Hephzibah V. Strmic-Pawl said that currently, the wealth gap is prevalent due to practices like discrimination in employment, mortgage lending, public education, and investing in non-White communities.

The fifth US state on the list is Wyoming, with a 53.37 racial equality score. According to the WalletHub study, the state also has the highest Poverty Rate Gap.

Iowa, a midwestern US state is fourth on the list, with a racial equality score of 52.27. The experts of the study say that ways to reduce racial inequalities are affordable housing, better education programs, entrepreneurship opportunities, and improvement in tax policies.

The third state with the least racial equality in the US is Wisconsin. It has a racial equality score of 48.34. "The 'best' of what the United States has to offer in its resources should not be restricted to only the wealthiest of its inhabitants", said Hephzibah V. Strmic-Pawl.

Another midwestern state, Illinois, makes it to the list. The state has a racial equality score of 44.82 and is second on the list. "Race still matters in the US and it structures one's opportunity to access education, jobs, housing, and wealth", said Terrell Strayhorn.

The state where racial equality is deplorable is the District of Columbia with a considerably low racial equality score of 16.47. It has the highest median annual income gap, labour-force participation rate gap, unemployment rate gap, and homeless rate gap.
