Dry vegetation fueling fire
California has endured a string of devastating wildfires over the past several years as a lingering drought and warmer temperatures have left forests and grasslands bone dry. In Arizona, hundreds of residents near Flagstaff were evacuated over the weekend as a wind-driven blaze threatened communities there.

“It’s an eerie look, to have that in your backdoor. So it’s (the fire) climbed that ridge and gone up and over, just smouldering away. Today is going be a tricky day because I got to stand on top of this little valley where it comes right down through the past down through those mountains right there,” an eyewitness said.
Engulfed in smoke
No casualties had been reported and no structures burned, according to fire managers, but downed power lines were hampering communications.
