<p>The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said today the southwest monsoon has set over Kerala, three days ahead of the normal date.</p>

<p>According to the Met Department, the rains were set to arrive on June 1.</p>

<p>Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency and a rival of the IMD, had said that the monsoon made its arrival in Kerala on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the IMD, if after May 10, 60 per cent of the available 14 stations - Minicoy, Amini, Thiruvananthapuram, Punalur, Kollam, Allapuzha, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur, Kudulu and Mangalore - report 2.5 mm or more rainfall for two consecutive days, the onset of monsoon over Kerala can be declared on the second day. This is one of the main parameters for declaring the arrival of monsoon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All the necessary parameters were met following which the onset of monsoon over Kerala was announced, Mritunjay Mohapatra, Additional Director General, IMD said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The IMD had predicted that India will experience third successful monsoon this year, even though some foreign forecasters have said uneven rain could affect crop production in the country.</p>

<p>The monsoon is considered normal if the average rainfall is between 96 to 104 per cent of long period average.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anything less than 90 per cent of LPA is termed a "deficient' monsoon", and 90-96 per cent of the same is considered "below normal".</p>

<p>"Upchunav mein jagah jagah se EVM kharab hone ki khabrein aa rahi hain, lekin phir bhi apne matadhikar ke liye zaroor jayen aur apna kartavya nibhayan," Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It loosely translates to "getting reports of problems in EVMs in the by-election, but still, voters should go out and vote".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sixteen Indian and Pakistani crew have been stranded on the MT Zoya 1 oil tanker for nearly a year due to a legal dispute.</p>

<p>The tanker is anchored 17 kilometres off the coast of UAE even as ship owners fight their case in a Sharjah court. The crew onboard the ship has been waiting inside the ship unpaid since December last year.</p>

<p>One of the sailors onboard the ship told WION that he had spent 11 months and he felt stressed and wanted to go back home. The Coastguard has refused to let the sailors deboard the ship.</p>

<p>Although the crew has been receiving regular food supply, but they are not being allowed to leave the ship until the owners settle their dispute.</p>

<p>Another sailor Rahul Kumar said: "We are suffering, our passport have been taken and we don't know the reason. Our company is not supporting us."</p>

<p>Around 44 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the first four hours of polling for Nagaland's lone Lok Sabha seat today.</p>

<p>Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio cast his vote at a polling booth at Touphema Basa village, around 25 km from the state capital, around 10 am, sources said.</p>

<p>The ruling People's Democratic Alliance (PDA), which has the NDPP and the BJP as its major constituents, has fielded former minister Tokheho Yepthomi from the seat.</p>

<p>Yepthomi is pitted against Opposition Naga People's Front (NPF) nominee C Apok Jamir. The Congress has also extended its support to Jamir.</p>

<p>Altogether 11,97,436 people are eligible to exercise their franchise at 2196 polling stations across the state, Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer Abhijit Sinha said.</p>

<p>Voting began at 7 AM and will go on till 4 PM in 1887 polling stations, while it will end an hour ahead in 309 booths, the CEO said.</p>

<p>"In 309 booths, set up in faraway places with barely any transportation facilities, the polling will end at 3 PM for the convenience of the election officials," he said.</p>

<p>Altogether, 40 companies of Central Armed Police Forces along with 80 companies of Nagaland Armed Police, 770 Home Guards and 2600 village guards have been deployed across the state to ensure free and fair polls, Sinha added.</p>

<p>The bypoll was necessitated after Rio, who is also the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) leader, resigned as a Lok Sabha member in February, days before the assembly polls.<br />

<p>A Congress MLA Siddu Nyama Gowda passed away in a road accident near Tulasigere, Karnataka while he was on his way to Bagalkot from Goa.</p>

<p>The 67-year-old MLA's car had rammed into divider while trying to avoid a collision from a truck coming from the opposite side.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He died while he was on his way to the hospital after the accident.</p>

<p>The accident took place early in the morning around 4.30 am near Tulasigere.&nbsp;</p>

A Congress MLA Siddu Nyama Gowda passed away in a road accident near Tulasigere, Karnataka while he was on his way to Bagalkot from Goa. The 67-year-old MLA's car had rammed into divider while trying to avoid a collision from a truck coming from the opposite side. He died while he was on his way to the hospital after the accident. <p>Pranab Mukherjee has given his consent to participate in the programme, RSS' Akhil Bhartiya Prachar Pramukh Arun Kumar told PTI.</p>

<p>The former president will be the chief guest at the valedictory session of the "Tritiya Varsh Varg" or the Third Year Course organised by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in June this year.</p>

<p>The Sangh leadership invites eminent people for the annual event held at its headquarters at Reshim Bagh in Nagpur.</p>

<p>"We have invited the former President of India and it is his greatness that he has given his consent for participating in the programme," Kumar Vishwas said.</p>

<p>In Karauli, the humidity was only 4% and the ultra-violet ray index was also at its peak causing people to stay home.</p>

<p>The heatwave has hit many states of North India including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana and according to reports, it will continue to prevail for another week in north-west and central India.</p>

<p>According to the Met department, a heatwave occurs when the&nbsp;maximum temperature of a station reaches at least 40 degree&nbsp;celsius or more for plains, 37 degree&nbsp;celsius or more for coastal stations and at least 30 degree celsius or more for hilly regions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The temperature in the national capital was recorded 33 degress celsius by the &nbsp;8:30am on Monday&nbsp;morning and is expected to rise during the day.</p>

<p>The minimum temperature on Sunday was at 26.3 degree&nbsp;celcius and maximum was at 45.8 degrees, Palam observatory said.</p>

<p>The heatwave warning has put millions of residents of these states at the risk of illness with heatstroke and exhaustion becoming common.</p>
