The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that heavy rainfall is likely in Odisha after the monsoon reaches Kerala in next 96 hours.

"The monsoon is likely to reach Kerala during the next 96 hours. After the onset of monsoon in Kerala, we will tell about Odisha advancement. In the next 24 hours, there will be thunderstorms at isolated places in the north and south Odisha," said HR Biswas, Director, MeT Department here on Tuesday.

"Cloud is moving towards the west to east. When monsoon clouds come, it will move from east to west. From June 8, there will be thunderstorm activity over Odisha along with heavy rainfall," he said.

The IMD has already issued warning about heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, movement of vehicles on National Highway 26 was hampered here on Monday as rain coupled with thunderstorm wreaked havoc in the region.

Several trees and electric poles were uprooted due to which vehicles were lined up for hours near Moter and Kusumkhunti.

The rains, however, brought much-needed respite for locals who were suffering from soaring temperatures in the region.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Meteorological Department's (MeT) local office had said monsoon will reach Odisha five to six days late this time.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said the party will fight bypolls alone on all 11 Uttar Pradesh Assembly seats if its alliance with the BSP ends, stressing that he would deliberate on the decision carefully.

After the BSP president Mayawati announcing her decision to go solo in the bypolls, the alliance with the SP appeared to be falling apart on Tuesday.

Yadav, who was in Ghazipur to visit the residence of SP worker Vijay Yadav to express his condolence after his murder, said, "If the gathbandhan (alliance) has disintegrated or whatever that is being said about the gathbandhan is true, then I will deliberate on it very carefully..."

"When there is no alliance, we will prepare on our own for the upcoming UP bypolls and contest on all the 11 seats. We will be preparing for it and a decision will be taken after consulting senior members of the party," he told reporters.

He said that even if the BSP treads a separate path, it is welcome.

The SP chief said, "At this point of time, the 'gathbandhan' is not important for us. What is more important is that the family of our slain party worker should get justice...I am more concerned over the killing of our workers."

Vijay Yadav was killed by some unidentified people who attacked him after barging into this house on May 24.

Akhilesh Yadav, who was earlier in Azamgarh, the seat from where he won the Lok Sabha election, said, "In 2022, the SP will form a government in Uttar Pradesh and this is our strategy."

Earlier, Mayawati said her party will fight the upcoming bypolls alone but can work with the SP in the future if Yadav is able to "fulfil his duties".

She also said that the Bahujan Samaj Party's ties with the Samajwadi Party "is never going to end" and she will try to ensure that their relationship stays "intact".

The alliance was formed in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls after a similar tie-up ensured the rout of the BJP from three Lok Sabha seats - Gorakhpur, Phulpur and Kairana - in bypolls held last year after the saffron party swept to power in the state.

But the tie-up this time failed to yield desired results for the SP, which contested 37 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats, and for the BSP which pitted its candidates in 38 seats.

While the BSP wrested 10 seats this time from nil in 2014, the SP won five, the same number of seats it bagged last time. Another ally RLD lost on all the three seats it contested jointly with the SP and the BSP.

The alliance had not fielded candidates in the Congress strongholds of Rae Bareli and Amethi, though the grand old party could retain only Rae Bareli, losing out Amethi to BJP's Smriti Irani.

The Kerala government Tuesday said it is in "constant contact" with the Union Health ministry in the wake of confirmation about Nipah infecting a person in the state, a year after the deadly virus claimed 17 lives.

State Health Minister, K K Shailaja, confirmed on Tuesday that a 23-year-old college student, who was undergoing treatment for fever in Kochi, has been infected by the virus.

Pathological samples from youth had been sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, which confirmed that the youth had been infected by the deadly virus. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said there was no need to panic as the health network would rise up to the challenge.

"We are in constant contact with the Union ministry for health. A team of experts have arrived in Kochi. Their guidelines will also be used to tackle the virus outbreak," Vijayan said in a Facebook Post.

"The news of confirmation should not be a reason for panic. Our health network is ready to rise up to the challenge," he said.

Under the supervision of the state health minister, all necessary preparations have been completed, Vijayan said, adding those who came in contact with the infected person, have been traced and are under observation.

Urging everyone to follow the instructions of the health department, the chief minister warned that stringent action would be taken against those spreading misinformation.

"The state had overcome the battle against Nipah last year. In this battle also we are going to prevail", he said.

In May last year, Nipah had claimed 17 lives -- 14 in Kozhikode and three in neighbouring Malappuram. The deceased included a nurse, who had taken care of one of the victims.

Meanwhile, the health department has sounded alert in Kollam, as three students, who had come in contact with the affected youth are from the district.

Isolation wards have been opened in district government hospitals, including Parippali medical college there, health department officials said.

India will be releasing five Pakistani prisoners on June 7 as a goodwill gesture.

The situation of Indian and Pakistani prisoners languishing in each other's jail has been one of the biggest humanitarian issues between the two countries.

In April, New Delhi had sent a note verbale to Islamabad asking for the release of prisoners who have completed their sentence; after Pakistan released 360 Indian prisoners.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first term was able to secure the release of 1749 Indian prisoners, including 1725 fishermen along with 57 boats.

In 2017, India had suggested Pakistan that the two sides could work together for the release and repatriation of elderly, women and mentally unsound prisoners on humanitarian grounds and proposed to revive the mechanism of Joint Judicial Committee.

Last six months saw New Delhi sending a number of note verbale to Islamabad asking to organise an early visit of Joint Judicial Committee to Pakistan but it has not received any response.

In December 2018, Pakistan released Indian Citizen Hamid Nehal Ansari after six years in jail. Hamid was arrested by Pakistani authorities in 2012 after he was found with a fake passport. He had gone to Pakistan via Afghanistan on a fake passport to meet a girl he befriended on Facebook.

It was followed by the release of two Pakistani nationals by India, Imran Warsi and Abdullah Shah. Imran Wari had come to India in 2004 on a valid visa but overstayed after marrying an Indian girl who he loved. He was caught after trying to make a fake passport in Bhopal and released in 2018, after 10 years in jail. Shah, an autistic person from Pakistan's Swat district, crossed over to India to meet Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan in 2017.

India will be releasing five Pakistani prisoners on June 7 as a goodwill gesture. The situation of Indian and Pakistani prisoners languishing in each other's jail has been one of the biggest humanitarian issues between the two countries.

Enforcement Directorate has termed as "misleading" the medical reports submitted by fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, an accused in 13,000 crore PNB scam case, as an excuse for not appearing before the Bombay High Court.

The law enforcement agency, in its affidavit submitted before a division bench headed by Justice I A Mahanty, said that the submission made by Choksi to the court on his medical conditions appear to be "facades being erected merely to mislead the court in an obvious attempt to delay the lawful proceedings.

"The documentation submitted by the appellant are merely copies. In the absence of the original, both the genesis and veracity of the contents of the documents cannot relied upon by the court," read the ED affidavit.

Seeking dismissal of medical records submitted by Choksi, the ED stated that the intention of Choksi appeared to be suspicious as he "purposefully failed to submit the medical records February 17, 2018, onwards.

"The agency further submitted that Choksi underwent coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty in February 2018 but was allowed to return to work within 3-5 days.

"It is not clear as to what prevents him from undertaking travel after about 8-9 months from the date of undergoing the procedure.

"It further contended that the medical certificates dated October 26, 2018, and January 18, 2019, appears to from general practitioner instead of a cardiac expert.

"The medical certificates appear to have been specifically obtained to hoodwink the due process of law in India," the affidavit further stated.

ED said that no further time should be granted to the appellant to submit any other document at this stage.

"The intention of the appellant is clearly dilatory in the matter," the affidavit read.

The agency also sought dismissal of a plea moved my Choksi against the Special FEOA (Fugitive Economic Offenders Act) special court declaring him a fugitive offender.

In July last year, the ED had filed an application in the Special FEOA (Fugitive Economic Offenders Act) special court to declare Choksi an economic offender.

Soon thereafter, in October, Choksi filed applications seeking for the ED's plea to be dismissed.

The application was, however, dismissed by the special court following which he moved Bombay High Court challenging the order and sought for it to be set aside.

In the affidavit, the ED accused Choksi of "siphoning and laundering the proceeds of crime" generated in the PNB fraud case.

"Summons was issued to him but he has not joined the investigation. He is clearly a fugitive and absconder," ED submitted.

The matter will be taken up for hearing today.

Mehul Choksi and nephew Nirav Modi are key accused in the Punjab National Bank(PNB) fraud case.

They fled the country a year ago. The scam is estimated at two billion US dollars.

Choksi was granted citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda on January 15, 2018.

Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday in connection with a money laundering case linked to purchase of alleged illegal assets abroad, officials said.

Vadra arrived at the agency's office near India Gate around 10:45 AM. He had skipped the summons on May 31, citing bad health.

Vadra was grilled for about five hours last Thursday when the investigating officer of the case recorded his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Vadra, before deposing before the agency Tuesday, issued a statement on social media saying he was undertaking the questioning exercise for the 13th time "post almost 80 hours with the Enforcement Directorate, answering any number of questions, amidst sensation and unnecessary drama around, I stay focused and calm."

But, he added, "blatantly and carelessly airing my health matters is not correct...But my time spent with people with worst problems, ailing, blind and orphaned kids to see them still smile, gives me the strength to go on."

"My life is unique and I have fought for almost a decade over baseless accusations. Physically situations can change, but ones honest mind cannot. I am determined on the truth and it is a book in the making, for the world to read and know clearly my side...," he said.

Vadra's comment on his health came as a Delhi court on Monday allowed him to travel abroad for six weeks for a checkup and obtain a second opinion on his ailment.

Vadra has appeared before the ED multiple times in connection with this case as also in another criminal money laundering case related to alleged irregularities of land allotment in Rajasthan's Bikaner district.

In this case, the businessman has appeared for the 11th time while in the Bikaner case he has deposed twice before the ED at its Jaipur office.

The agency recently sought cancellation of the anticipatory bail given to Vadra and had also opposed his plea for foreign travel.

The ED had maintained in courts that it required Vadra's custody as he was not cooperating with the investigation.

The ED case against Vadra relates to allegations of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property at 12, Bryanston Square worth 1.9 million GBP (British pounds), which is allegedly owned by him.

The agency had told a Delhi court that it has received information about various new properties in London which belong to Vadra. These include two houses, one worth 5 million GBP and the other valued at 4 million GBP, six other flats and more properties.

Vadra has denied the allegations of possessing illegal foreign assets and termed them a political witch hunt against him. He said he was being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends.

After a huge outcry and allegations of Hindi imposition by many states, the Centre on Monday made changes to the new Draft National Education Policy, making the language optional.

"In keeping with the principle of flexibility, students who wish to change one or more of the three languages they are studying may do so in Grade 6 or Grade 7, so long as they are able to still demonstrate proficiency in three languages (one language at the literature level) in their modular Board Examinations sometime during secondary school," read the tweaked version of the draft policy.

In the original Draft National Education Policy 2019, a three-language formula recommended the inclusion of English and Hindi besides mother tongue in the non-Hindi state, while the Hindi-speaking states were to include English and Indian language from other parts of India.

The draft policy had said multilingualism is a necessity of India as of much of the developed world and must be considered a boon and an opportunity for learning and expanding one's horizons rather than a burden.

Many leaders from non-Hindi states, especially Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, had opposed the policy.

In Tamil Nadu, leaders across party lines had said the state would not tolerate any imposition.

Echoing the same sentiments, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had said that the Centre cannot force any language.

However, despite the raging controversy, the Centre had maintained that the policy was just a draft subject to changes and ensured that no language will be pressed upon.

"The committee was formed for drafting New Education Policy. That committee has given its report. The report of the committee is only received by the Ministry. That's not the policy. No language will be imposed on any state," HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishak had told ANI on Saturday.

The eight-member team consisting of climbers from the UK, US and Australia went missing en route to the Nanda Devi East peak.

Bodies of five mountaineers were sighted near an unscaled peak adjoining the Nanda Devi East peak during an air search by Air Force helicopters on Monday, Pithoragarh District Magistrate VK Jogdande said.

Apparently, the mountaineers were killed in an avalanche while ascending an unscaled peak near the Nanda Devi East peak after they failed to scale the latter, he said.

The bodies were sighted after an air search was conducted over the peak on the basis of clues provided by four climbers from UK rescued during a sortie undertaken on Sunday.

"We are sending a report to the Centre. The rescue operation will be conducted after we get instructions," the District Magistrate said.

"We have an expert team from State Disaster Response Force, besides experts from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. In addition to these teams we have stationed our search teams at Laspa and Bugdiyar camps close to the Nanda Devi base camp in Munsiyari," said the official.

Sub Divisional Magistrate of Munsiyari KN Goswami said, "It is now ITBP and SDRF and Air Force teams that will conduct the search operation with help of expert mountaineers and local villagers."

Led by well-known British mountaineer Martin Moran, the team went missing recently on way to the 7434-metre-high Nanda Devi East peak in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district.

A liaison officer of Indian Mountaineering Foundation in New Delhi was also part of the team.

They had left Munsiyari on May 13 to scale the peak but did not return to the base camp on the appointed date of May 25.

The members of the team were Martin Moran, John McLaren, Richard Payne, Rupert Havel (all from UK), Ruth Macrain (Australia), Anthony Sudecam (US), Rachel Bimmel (US) and liaison officer Chetan Pandey, the District Magistrate said.

British mountaineer Martin Moran had scaled the peak twice in the past, he said.

The route to the peak begins from Munsiyari about 132 km from the district headquarters.

India has slammed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its references on Kashmir in its final Communiqué at its summit in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on May 31.

Rejecting the OIC Communiqué, the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said, "The OIC has no locus standi in matters relating to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India. It is reiterated that OIC should refrain from making such unwarranted references”.

The OIC in its Communiqué mentioned Kashmir six times and said, it "reaffirmed its principled support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the realization of their legitimate right to self-determination".

It is not for the first time when the OIC has made references on Kashmir. India has slammed the group, which comprises 57 Muslim countries, every time.

Since the early 1990s, communiqués and resolutions have been issued at the OIC summits and ministerial meetings which have included one-sided criticism of India. Pakistan has been behind such anti-India references in the OIC communiqués/resolutions.

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was invited for the 46th OIC foreign ministers meet at Abu Dhabi on March 1. She was in attendance as the Guest of Honour. The invite was extended by foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Many countries such as Bangladesh, the UAE and Syria have supported India's inclusion at the OIC but Pakistan has been creating resistance.

Speaking at a press conference at the end of Abu Dhabi foreign ministers meet, where India was invited on March 1, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan said, "OIC has sent a very clear and a positive sign to India, to the people of India, that the OIC appreciates the relationship with India".

Adding, that the organisation, "looks forward to strengthening such a relationship with India to the point where we can embrace India one day in the OIC".

Pakistan boycotted the plenary session at the OIC foreign minister's meet due to India's presence. Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had written to OIC secretary-general Dr Yousef bin Ahmad Al Othaimeen asking the UAE to rescind the invite to India. The plea did not receive any response.

Earlier this year, Syrian envoy to India Dr Riad Abbas, told WION, "India has full right to be a permanent member of the OIC and we would like to be a full member of the OIC."

In 1969, the Indian delegation led by Congress leader Fakrudin Ali Ahmed, who later became the President of India, was not allowed to attend the final session of the OIC in Rabat, Morocco at the behest of Pakistan's then-president, Yahya Khan.
