A group of minority leaders from different walks of life have endorsed the statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26. Prime Minister had said: "The way poor have been cheated, minorities have been deceived in the same way. It would have been good their education, their health had been in focus. Minorities have been made to live in the fear of those who believed in vote bank politics. I expect from you in 2019 that you would be able to make a hole in that deception. We have to earn their trust."

The minority community leaders in a letter dated 3.6.2019 endorsed the statement of the Prime Minister and said that they are committed to the initiatives announced by PM Modi.

The minority community leaders also thanked the prime minister for making a point to mention that the freedom struggle of 1857 was a common endeavour of all communities. The community leaders also wrote in the letter that skill development, education, healthcare and protection under law from hooligans as their top priority. The letter stated that education and health are two sectors which are crucial to bring minorities in the mainstream and to make them fully productive in order to realise the dream of turning India into the third largest economy in the world.

The letter states,"Sir, we are a group of concerned citizens who have contributed in educational, social and cultural development of the community and country. We assure you of our utmost cooperation in the fulfilment of the above goals and we offer our profound services to enable your honour to take the community into confidence for suitable measures you may propose to take on above suggestions. We are respectfully offering to interact with your honour from time to time as per your convenience."

The letter has been signed by eighteen eminent personalities from the minority community including Mehmood Madani, general secretary of Jamait Ulema-e-Hind. The outreach to Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumes significance as the Opposition has been campaigning on the line that BJP will never be able to bridge the trust deficit between them and the minority communities.

At a press conference in Srinagar, Malik, accompanied by four advisors and chief secretary, gave a detailed report of the administrative achievements since he took over. The Governor slammed the political parties for misguiding the population and the youth of the state. ”I am asking youth to shun violence and I'll host dinner for them,” he said.

“Politicians here are lying to masses here. Local kids (who joined militancy) should return to their families. Firstly, people here have to vote because leaders here are elected with few votes, so people should be told the power of the vote,” he stated.

He lauded the local population for their cooperation in elections and said that ”although some pockets witnessed less percentage, still representatives were chosen. We did elections peacefully. I'm thankful to people,” Malik told media.

Malik added that although the scrapping of article 35-A and 370 were part of political manifestoes of political parties, he asked people not to worry. He said a massive reach-out programme was on cards and in a month, the administration will start working on the outreach.

Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said "before July 12, we will bring a massive reach-out programme. We need to tell children that life is about living and not dying”.

On terrorism, Malik said Pakistan was in trouble itself and recruitment of local youth in terror ranks has gone down as the administration was taking a humanitarian approach. "LTTE was powerful but it vanished despite the support from several countries,” he said.

While blaming Delhi and local leadership of committing mistakes on Kashmir, Malik said that the PM was ready to meet anyone and discuss everything.

During his initial days, the Governor was vocal about corruption on the state by people in power. On being asked about the recent raids and the sacking of J&K bank chairman, he said that ”we have acted against J&K Bank. You will see a lot of things which will come out of this investigation which I'm privy to”.

The Chief Secretary of the state revealed that a letter from the RBI sought action against alleged misappropriation in J&K bank. "We will make a committee and they will decide the new chairman. Under recommendations, people have been appointed in the bank under CSR. How can this happen? 50 Crore rupees have been spent on a golf course in Srinagar. How can they do this?" he said.

The Governor urged the people in India to visit Kashmir valley as there was no fear and people were welcoming.

”Channels are running negative propaganda stories about Kashmir. I want to tell people that Kashmir is safe and they should come,” advisor to Governor, Khurshid Ganai said.

Later at the event, they released ’New Vision New Horizon’, a document carrying the details of the future projects and work that has been done.

Cyclone Vayu turns 'very severe', 10 districts on alert in Gujarat

In the first conviction under the amended anti-hijacking law, a special NIA court Tuesday awarded life term to a Mumbai-based businessman and also imposed a hefty Rs 5 crore fine for triggering a hijack scare on a Jet Airways plane in 2017.

After the incident on October 30, 2017, Birju Salla became the first person to be put under the "national no fly list" and was also the first to be booked under the stringent Anti Hijacking Act, which had replaced a vintage law of 1982. The new anti-hijack rules came into force in July 2017.

Holding Salla guilty of creating a hijack scare, the court of special National Investigating Agency(NIA) judge K M Dave ordered that the fine amount to be given by Salla be distributed among the crew members and passengers on board the plane.

Salla was accused of creating a hijack scare by planting a threat note written in English and Urdu in the tissue paper box of the aircraft's toilet.

The pilot and co-pilot of the flight will be given Rs 1 lakh each, the flight attendants will be given Rs 50,000 each, and 116 passengers on the flight will be given Rs 25,000 each from the fine collected from Salla, the court said.

The NIA had in January last year filed a charge sheet against him under sections 3(1), 3(2)(a) and 4(b) of the Anti-Hijacking Act, 2016.

The NIA had said Salla prepared a "threat note" in both English and Urdu language and placed it "intentionally" in the tissue paper box of the toilet near the business class of the Mumbai-Delhi Jet Airways flight 9W339 on October 30, thereby jeopardising the safety of passengers and crew on board.

Salla was arrested after the plane made an emergency landing at the Ahmedabad airport after a female flight attendant found the note in the washroom which read, "there are hijackers on board and explosives on the plane".

The case was first probed by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch before the NIA took over and re-registered the case under sections 3(1), 3(2)(a) and 4(b) of the Anti Hijacking Act on November 7, 2017.

Salla, who was held on suspicion, confessed and told investigators that he had done it in the hope that it would force Jet Airways to shut down its Delhi operations and that his girlfriend, who worked in the airline's Delhi office, would come back to Mumbai, according to the NIA.

The note said the plane should be flown to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir(PoK). The note ended with the words, 'Allah is Great'.

In a press statement released Tuesday, the NIA said, "During the investigation, clinching evidence regarding preparation of the threat note and its placement on the plane was collected. It was further established that accused Birju Kishor Salla intentionally committed the act to disrupt the operation of aircraft while on board."

"He also jeopardised the safety of the passengers and crew members on board by an intentional act of putting printed threat letter inside the toilet of the aircraft," the NIA added.

West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi has convened a meeting of major political parties on Thursday in view of the ongoing post-poll violence in the state, sources in the Raj Bhavan said.

Tripathi has sent a letter to all four prominent political parties in Bengal, the Trinamool Congress, the CPI(M), the BJP and the Congress, urging them to attend the meet at 4 pm at the Raj Bhavan, they said.

The BJP and the TMC have confirmed that they would attend the meeting. The Congress and the CPI-M confirmed receiving the letter, but are yet to confirm their participation.

"We will go to the Governor's all-party meeting tomorrow. The governor is a constitutional body," a senior TMC leader said.

Welcoming the move, West Bengal BJP unit president Dilip Ghosh said the state government should have taken the initiative.

"We welcome the decision. We have received Tripathi's letter. We would be attending tomorrow's meeting," he told PTI.

Tripathi had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday and apprised them of the situation in the state.

When he was asked about the possibility of imposition of the President's rule in West Bengal, Tripathi had told reporters that there was no such discussion during his meetings.

The Centre had on Sunday expressed "deep concern" over continuing violence in West Bengal, and the Union Home Ministry had sent an advisory saying the "unabated violence" even after the Lok Sabha polls appeared to be a failure on part of the state government.

In the advisory, the Ministry of Home Affairs had also asked the state government to maintain law and order, peace and tranquillity.

Unhappy with the advisory, Banerjee stepped up attack on the Centre, saying the violence was a "planted game and the central government and (BJP) party cadre are trying to incite violence in West Bengal".

News brief: Big stories of the day

Tamil Nadu’s ruling party the AIADMK passed five resolutions on Wednesday to thank voters, alliance partners and congratulate the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for their win in the recently held Lok Sabha elections.

The party also urged workers to work for the upcoming local body polls on the vision of former party supremos MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa at its first district secretaries meeting post the Lok Sabha poll rout and amid calls from certain quarters for a single charismatic leader.

This meeting gained significance as there had been demands from certain quarters last week, for establishing a single charismatic leader for the party, after which AIADMK leadership had written to the cadre asking them to "join hands to save the party and remain disciplined and follow the political lessons of MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa".

Fueling the speculation of deep divisions within the party leadership, there were posters in the vicinity of the party office in Avvai Shanmugam Salai, which urged Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to take over as party General Secretary, terming it as the expectation of the party cadre.

Speaking to reporters after the nearly hour-and-a-hour-long meeting, Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar dismissed the posters as gossip and maintained that status quo would prevail, he also said that the dual leadership issue wasn’t even discussed and termed it a routine meeting. When questioned about the decision to tie up with the BJP, he responded saying, it wasn’t an issue at all.

Senior AIADMK leader Vaithilingam said that there is no need to even speak about elections for the post of General Secretary as the existing set up of coordinator and co-coordinator are bound to continue.

The party has also instructed its spokespersons to not speak regarding the party's stance without seeking approval from the high command. Until further notice, they have also been instructed to not take part in any television debates, media interactions or post on social media regarding the party's future course of action.

Other functionaries have been instructed to not post their personal views or express them on the mainstream media or social media platforms and failure in following the instructions will lead to disciplinary action against them.

Speaking to WION about the developments in the party, senior journalist and political analyst Dr Sumanth C Raman stuck to his earlier analysis and said, "today’s meeting did not appear to be a rocky one and that there is likely to be no immediate change in the mode of leadership in the coming months."

The promise of democracy is the periodic opportunity it creates for fresh beginnings. A government re-elected with such a resounding mandate should continue with the successful aspects of its economic policies. The most notable has been promoting economic inclusion via the public provision of essential private goods and services, including toilets, housing, power, cooking gas, bank accounts, emergency medical assistance, and now a basic income for all farmers.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today shared pictures of Chandrayaan-2 which is set to be launched in July.

It will be India's second lunar mission after the grand success of Chandrayaan-1. ISRO has planned the mission as a tribute to pioneer of Indian space programme Vikram Sarabhai.

India's space agency plans to land a rover on the moon, a feat achieved by the former Soviet Union, USA and China. India hopes to join the elite club with the launch of the second mission. The rover will roll out for carrying out scientific experiments.

The Moon landing is expected in September, ISRO had said earlier. Chandrayaan-2 will have 13 payloads including one passive experiment from American space agency NASA.

ISRO chairman K Sivan had said earlier that the rover would land at a place "where nobody else has gone - the Moon's South Pole".

Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair had said that the second lunar mission would look for "specific minerals on the surface of the Moon".

Chandrayaan-2 mission is an advanced version of the previous Chandrayaan-1 mission about 10 years ago. Chandrayaan-1 had eleven payloads- five from India, three from Europe, two from USA and one from Bulgaria, and the mission had the credit for the discovery of water on the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan-2 launch comes ten years after ISRO launched its first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, in 2009. The mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor but didn't include a rover like Chandrayaan-2.

The mission which costs nearly Rs 800 crore will launched on board GSLV-Mk III which is an indigenous mission, comprising an orbiter, lander and rover.
