News brief: Big stories of the day

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday dismissed NCP chief Sharad Pawar's recent accusations of BJP luring rival party legislators, and asked the senior leader to instead introspect within his party.

National Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday alleged that the Central government is pressuring leaders of opposition parties to join the BJP.

"A lot of NCP and Congress legislators are willing to join BJP but we will only induct selected few in the party. The people, against whom ED or any other inquiry is ongoing, will not be taken in the party. We do not want to invite anyone or run behind anyone, people are themselves coming to BJP," Fadnavis told reporters here.

Fadnavis also rejected Pawar's accusation of BJP misusing probe agencies for threatening politicians and said, "BJP has never indulged in politics of pressure. In the last five years, a lot of troubled sugar factories have been helped by the government and state bank. The list is long but in return of the same no one was asked to join the party. Pawar Sahab must introspect within his party."

Fadnavis's reaction comes after Pawar on Sunday alleged that the Central government is pressuring leaders of opposition parties to join the BJP.

Pawar went on to accuse that the BJP is misusing premier probe agencies to threaten politicians of various parties.

"Central Government is misusing their power before elections (Maharashtra), pressuring those leaders who are not willing to join BJP. This is not limited to Maharashtra, it has happened everywhere. Maharashtra Chief Minister and his cabinet ministers have been involved in calling many leaders. On the other side, we are getting complaints from many that some agencies are being used like ED, CBI and state government's ACB. These agencies are being used to threaten the public representatives," he said while addressing the media in Mumbai.

Former Chief Minister and People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said that the priority of her party is to defend the identity of Kashmir and the legitimacy of Article 35A and Article 370 of the Constitution.

"Our priority is to defend our identity, especially the legitimacy of Article 35A and Article 370 of the Constitution. So, we are ready for the big fight," the former Chief Minister said on the 20th raising day of the PDP.

She claimed that it was her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who exerted the most pressure on the Central government to resolve the Kashmir issue.

"It was my father who tied the hands of the Central government to resolve the Kashmir issue," said Mehbooba.

She further asserted that her party is not corrupt and will not be cowed down by the NIA and the ED raids.

"My party and ministers are not corrupt. So, the NIA and the Enforcement Directorate raids are not the solutions. Any power including the Chief Minister's chair is not permanent for anyone," she said.

She had earlier stressed that the Kashmir issue is a political problem, which cannot be solved by using the military might.

"Jammu and Kashmir is a political issue. There is no military solution to this issue. It cannot be solved until you talk to Pakistan and the people here. You can establish temporary peace by (using military) but for long, lasting peace, it is necessary to solve the Kashmir problem (through talks)," she said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that Modi government during its first term laid down the foundation in order to make India a $5 trillion economy.

"The PM (Narendra Modi) said India will be made a $5 trillion economy. Remarks were made by people. But I'd like to say that between 2014-2019, the central government completed the work of laying down a foundation for this," said Shah, during UP Government's second groundbreaking ceremony of projects.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her budget speech early this month, had announced that the government envisioned to make India a $5 trillion economy.

Targeting the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Shah said that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government failed to improve the Indian economy.

"When Atal Bihari Vajpayee government lost in 2004, We were 11th largest economy in the world. Then UPA government took over and for 10 years there was no growth in the ranking," he said.

"But in the last five years, we jumped from 11th biggest economy to sixth-largest economy," he added.

He also praised UP Government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for its development works.

"It is a matter of great pleasure and shock to me that in just three years Adityanath has contributed a lot for the development of the state," he added.

"At that time the only thought of Narendra Modi and me, as party president, was that someone who is determined and capable of hard work will adapt to all situations. So we handed over UP`s future in hands of Yogi ji. That decision was proven right by him," he added.

Joint Forum, a platform of 29 tea trade unions, has sought the intervention of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the implementation of Minimum Wages Act for the tea garden workers.

West Bengal government had formed a Minimum Wages Advisory Committee to resolve the crisis earlier. However, the forum claims "not a single positive step has been taken by the committee in favour of the workers even after conducting 14 meetings on the issue."

With their demands not being met despite repeated pleas, the forum has now decided to step up its protest. A meeting is being organised on July 29 in Terai and Dooars and later the workers plan to take out a march.

Aloke Chakraborty, President, Darjeeling district, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and senior leader of Joint Forum said, "Around 4.5 lakh tea garden workers have been facing severe distress due to the prolonged negligence. The situation has deteriorated further now. Many tea gardens have been closed down. We are surprised that no step has been taken so far by the state government or the central government to reopen the gardens."

Pratap Kujur, tea garden worker and forum leader said, "We have sent our demands to Mamata Banerjee and Nirmala Sitharaman and have requested them to call us to resolve the crisis. We are hoping for the best."

Iran has freed nine Indian crew members of a Panama-flagged tanker it seized this month, the foreign ministry said on Saturday, and it appealed for the release of three remaining crew members held from the same ship.

Dozens of Indian crew members on ships in the Gulf have been caught up in rising tensions between Iran and the West.

The MT Riah was detained by the Iranian coastguard on July 13, with 12 Indian crew members on board, the foreign ministry said.

The seizure of the British tanker in the world’s most important waterway for the oil trade has deepened a crisis between Iran and the West that was triggered in May when the United States tightened sanctions, effectively barring all countries from buying Iranian oil.
