In a big blow to people to people contact between arch rivals Pakistan and India, Imran Khan-led government announced that it's shutting down Samjhauta Express--the bi-weekly train that connects Delhi in India to Lahore in Pakistan -- ''forever''.

In a tweet, the Pakistan Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said, "Pakistan to shutdown Samjhota Express". He said the service will be closed "forever"

Those who have already brought Samjhota Express tickets will be refunded without any deduction, he added.

The development comes amid escalating tension between India and Pakistan after Modi government abrogated Article 370 that gave a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under the Indian constitution.

Dismissing the security concern, Indian railway authorities have sent Indian crew and own engine to bring the train from Wagah to Attari on the Indian side. The train reached Wagah with 110 passengers.

Samjhauta express was discontinued after the attack on Indian Parliament in 2001. Service was later resumed in 2014 but again suspended after the assassination of Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto.

In 2019, Pakistan again suspended the service after its forces attacked Indian military installation on February 27 in retaliation to India's counterterror strikes on Jaish-e-Mohammed camps in Balakot.

The service was started in 1976 as part of the Shimla Agreement and initially ran between Amritsar and Lahore.

"Janmasthan need not be the exact spot but can also mean surrounding areas," Senior counsel K Parasaran said continuing his arguments before a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

The constitution bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud, S A Bobde, Ashok Bhushan and S A Abdul Nazeer, is conducting a day-to-day hearing in the Ayodhya title dispute case after the mediation panel had failed to achieve an amicable settlement.

He said there was no dispute that the disputed site is the "Janmasthana" (birthplace).

Parasaran maintained that both Hindus and Muslims have always called it a Janmasthana.

The counsel further contended that the High Court had ordered partition of the disputed properties but no one had sought it.

"The rights of the entire area, that is 2.77 acres as a whole, had to be decided but the High Court divided the property," he added.

Veteran Congress leader and last prince of Jammu and Kashmir Karan Singh on Thursday said that he is not in favour of the blanket condemnation of government's decision on the state, saying there are several positive points.

He also welcomed the reorganisation of the region and the Union Territory status for Ladakh.

"Ladakh's emergence as a Union Territory is to be welcomed. In fact, "I had suggested this as far back as 1965 when I was still Sadar-i-Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir when I had publicly proposed reorganisation of the state", he said in a statement.

He also supported the scrapping of provisions of Article 35A as the issue of gender-discrimination needed to be addressed. However, he condemned the government's decision to sideline the two main political parties of Jammu and Kashmir - the Peoples Democratic Party and National Conference - before deciding to scrap Article 370.

PM Modi to address nation at 8pm today after scrapping Article 370

An Indian transgender couple who both underwent sex re-assignment have tied the knot in a traditional Bengali ceremony, in what is believed to be the state's first "rainbow wedding".

Surrounded by family and friends, bride Tista Das, 38, and groom Dipan Chakravarthy, 40, took part in rituals and pledged their love for each other in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state.

"We are feeling awesome actually. We are out of the gender box and we love to be an exception and we think this is a strong bond between us," Tista Das told AFP on Monday.

"It's a bond of love. It's a bond of liberty also," she said. "And this is the solidarity of our souls."

Das said she battled for a long time to "achieve her identity as a woman, as a human being", adding: "I was not even considered as a human being in this brutal society."

A transgender friend of the couple, Anurag Maitrayee, said the ceremony was a "beautiful, emotional union of two hearts and two souls".

"Despite all the oddities and all the atrocities, I have seen how Tista and her journey from a man into a woman and her relation, emotion, love with a person with a soul whose journey is from a woman to a man," Maitrayee said.

Official estimates for India's transgender population are not known but they are thought to number several million.

Transgenders often live on the extreme fringes of Indian society, with many forced into prostitution, begging or menial jobs.

Over the centuries transgenders have assumed different roles in society, from royal courtesans to participants in birth ceremonies and other auspicious occasions.

They have waged a lengthy battle to protect their rights and end discrimination.

India's Supreme Court recognised them as a third gender in a historic 2014 ruling.

On Tuesday, India's lower house passed a transgender bill to enshrine the rights of transgender people in law. The bill is currently being discussed in the upper house.

But the community as well as human rights activists have raised concerns that the bill's language is unclear over whether it allows transgender people to self-identify.

"The Transgender Persons Bill should be a remarkable achievement for a long-persecuted community, but the current draft fails on the fundamental right to self-identify," Human Rights Watch South Asia director Meenakshi Ganguly said last month.

"It's crucial that the law be in line with the Supreme Court's historic ruling on transgender rights."
