Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was seen celebrating Independence Day with Congress leaders, while he skipped the event at the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag and delivered an address to the nation.
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday (Aug 15) aimed a fresh strike at Opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge after the two leaders decided to “skip” the Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort in Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag and delivered a noteworthy speech. The ruling party has called the absence of Congress leaders “shameful behaviour.”
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took to X to slam the Opposition leaders, saying, “Congress spokesperson in TV debate with me just now confirmed that ‘LoP’ Rahul Gandhi skipped 15th August Program at Red Fort. This was a national celebration but sadly Lover of Pakistan Rahul Gandhi – in Modi virodh does Desh & Sena Virodh! Shameful behaviour. Is this Sanvidhan and Sena ka Samman?”
While Rahul Gandhi skipped the grand celebration at the Red Fort, he was seen observing Independence Day at Indira Bhavan in Delhi. He was joined by other Congress members and senior leaders for a flag-hoisting ceremony, during which Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge hoisted the flag.
Both Congress leaders extended greetings to citizens on India’s 79th Independence Day and paid tribute to the sacrifice of the country’s freedom fighters.
Extending his greetings on the occasion, Rahul Gandhi wrote on X, “Heartfelt Independence Day greetings to all countrymen. This freedom, achieved through the sacrifices of great freedom fighters, is a resolve to build an India where justice rests on the foundation of truth and equality, and every heart is filled with respect and brotherhood. It is the duty of all of us to protect the pride and honor of this precious heritage. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!”
Last year, Rahul Gandhi was seen seated in the back rows during the Independence Day event at the Red Fort, which became a controversy as the Leader of the Opposition is usually seated in the front row alongside senior ministers. The Opposition said it was an insult to the people, while the government responded by saying the seating arrangements were adjusted to accommodate Olympic medal winners, who were attending the event.
