<p>Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has slammed the ruling government for delivering a harsh treatment to party president Shehbaz Sharif by continuing to transport him from jail to courts despite the National Assembly Opposition leader suffering from chronic backache.</p>

<p>She further alleged that the Gilgit-Baltistan election was stolen by incarcerating Sharif. Meanwhile, Dawn reported that PML-N Punjab information Secretary Azma Bukhari stated that the prosperous Punjab of Shehbaz Sharif was now at the mercy of "wheat and sugar mafias" as the government was engaged in "persecution" of the former chief minister and his son Hamza Shehbaz.</p>

<p>She also alleged that the Punjab cabinet meeting held on Monday discussed ways and means to further distress the Sharifs through tactics like forcing the Anti-Corruption Establishment to act against the opposition.</p>

<p>The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday registered cases against Sharif and his two sons among others in the multibillion rupee sugar scam, under money laundering, fraud, and other charges.</p>

<p>Last year, Sharif and his son Hamza were indicted in connection with the Ramzan Sugar Mills case.</p>

<p>NAB had then alleged that Sharif misused his post as the former Punjab chief minister to build a bridge amounting to rupees five hundred million to facilitate the Ramzan mills.</p>

<p>Zatko answers to CEO Jack Dorsey and is expected to take over management of key security functions after a 45- to 60-day review.</p>

<p>In an exclusive interview, Zatko said he will examine "information security, site integrity, physical security, platform integrity -- which starts to touch on abuse and manipulation of the platform -- and engineering."</p>

<p>Zatko most recently oversaw security at the electronic payments unicorn Stripe. Before that, he worked on special projects at Google and oversaw handing out grants for projects on cybersecurity at the Pentagon's famed Defense Advanced Research and Projects Agency (DARPA).</p>

<p>Zatko's colorful career began in the 1990s, when he simultaneously conducted classified work for a government contractor and was among the leaders of Cult of the Dead Cow, a hacking group notorious for releasing Windows hacking tools in order to goad Microsoft into improving security.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I don't know if anyone can fix&nbsp;Twitter's security, but he'd be at the top of my list," said Dan Kaufman, who supervised Zatko at DARPA and now leads the advanced products group at Google.</p>

<p>Twitter&nbsp;faces numerous security challenges. A year ago, the US&nbsp;government accused two men of spying for Saudi Arabia when they worked at&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;years earlier, saying that they passed along private information about the kingdom's critics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In July, a group of young hackers tricked employees and won access to internal tools, which let them change account settings and then tweet from the accounts of then-presidential candidate Joe Biden, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The data breach this summer was an important reminder of how far&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;needs to go in building some of the basic security functions necessary to run a service targeted by adversaries much more skilled than the teenagers arrested for that incident," said Alex Stamos, a former Facebook chief security officer and current Stanford researcher who has helped lead efforts to fight election disinformation.</p>

<p>Stamos, who once worked for Zatko's security consultancy, called him a great fit for a company lacking the financial muscle of Facebook and Google. "They are going to have to find creative solutions to these problems, and if Mudge is famous for anything in security, it is being creative."</p>

<p>Zatko said he was committed to improving public conversations on&nbsp;Twitter. He praised a recent move to increase "friction" by prompting users to comment instead of simply retweeting; a next step could be to force people to understand a long conversation before participating in it, he said.</p>

<p>Zatko said he appreciated&nbsp;Twitter's openness to unconventional security approaches, such as his proposal for confusing bad actors by manipulating the data they receive from&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;about how people interact with their posts.</p>

<p>"They are willing to take some risks," Zatko said of his new employer. "With the challenges of algorithms and algorithmic bias, they are not standing by and waiting until someone else solves the problem."</p>

<p>“We are worried that he’s going to do some rash things that aren’t going to make sense for the future of the country or global stability,” said Rufus Yerxa, the president of the National Foreign Trade Council, which represents major multinational companies. “Given the history of President Trump’s use of executive authority, we’re taking nothing for granted in these next few months.”</p>

<p>Still, “most of what he could do is through executive orders and executive actions, which can be reversed by a Biden administration,” Yerxa added.</p>

<p>Whether Biden opts to roll back Trump’s more punitive measures will depend, at least in part, on China’s future behavior, including whether it pursues more aggressive incursions into the South China Sea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, people close to his campaign say.</p>

<p>Beijing has recently endorsed a policy of greater technological self-reliance and a stronger military to protect itself from a more antagonistic United States, and moved ahead with cementing other economic partnerships. On Sunday, China signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, a pan-Asian trade pact that includes Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries, and will help cement China’s image as the dominant economic power in the region.</p>

<p>Similar to Biden himself, many of Biden’s closest advisers have a moderate track record on trade and China, believing they can work with Chinese leaders on some issues even as they challenge them on others. But several of his national security advisers are more skeptical of China.</p>

<p>No matter the path, business groups, economists and others are hoping for a coherent strategy that does not result in the type of economic brinkmanship Trump appeared to thrive on.</p>

<p>While Democrats and Republicans have credited Trump with drawing attention to China’s security threats, and its unfair economic practices like intellectual property theft, his dealings with China have also been transactional and inconsistent. In an attempt to secure a trade deal, Trump lavished praise on Xi, delayed sanctions against China’s human rights violations for months, and pardoned Chinese company ZTE for running afoul of U.S. law. And he has employed racist and xenophobic rhetoric, like calling the coronavirus the “kung flu,” that has fueled attacks on people of Asian descent around the country.</p>

<p>“The Trump administration never did lay out a coherent, comprehensive, engaged trade strategy,” said Thea M. Lee, an economist and the president of the Economic Policy Institute. “It was much more scattershot: Throw up a tariff here, do a deal with China, disparate elements that didn’t seem to talk to each other.”</p>

<p>“But there are a lot of tools in that toolbox, and I would like to see the Biden administration be thoughtful and strategic about how to use them,” Lee said.</p>
