Moldovan tennis player Dmitrii Baskov has been hailed as an "Indian hero" after joining a campaign to feed Ahmedabad's poor, who are struggling during the coronavirus lockdown.

Baskov, a two-time Davis Cup player, arrived in India in January to visit a tennis academy before the advancing pandemic prevented him from returning home.

The 25-year-old, once a hitting partner for Wimbledon champion Simona Halep, has since been helping out by packaging food for the needy in Ahmedabad, capital of the western state of Gujarat.

He is among a team packing bread, rice and other dishes at the Ace Tennis Academy, destined for the city's slums and containment zones.

"My friend Pramesh Modi mentioned this (idea of feeding the poor) and I said yes, sounds great and the next day we did it and it continued day after day," Baskov told AFP.

"One hundred, 200, 300 packets and then we realised we are doing some great stuff. It is not a daily desire or action, it is now a natural act of helping.

"I am a sportsman and nothing more than that but the desire to help is always with me."

The nationwide lockdown, imposed on March 25, has caused misery for millions who rely on India's vast, hand-to-mouth informal sector.

Ahmedabad has seen a surge in coronavirus cases and the city remains under strict lockdown, with only milk and vegetable shops allowed to remain open.

Gujarat is the second-worst hit among India's states and territories, with 6,625 cases and 396 deaths, according to national government figures.

Baskov has also donated blood to help people with thalassemia, an inherited condition in which the body makes inadequate amount of haemoglobin.

A volunteer at the tennis academy says Baskov serves as a "lesson in humanity" for everyone.

"He is an Indian hero and could be a role model for a number of Indians who have not come out of their houses to even help out in one way or the other," said Mitul Parikh, who packs food alongside Baskov.

"So if a person from another country can help Indians in such times of crisis then it is a lesson in humanity for everybody."

Pramesh Modi, director of the academy, said his team have packed and delivered more than 275,000 food packages and more than 700 ration kits, which contain about a month's worth of supplies.

In a tragic incident, at least eight people, including a child, have been killed with over 800 rushed to emergency services following the toxic gas leak at a pharmaceutical chemical plant in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. Meanwhile, South Korean battery maker LG Chemical Ltd’s owner of the facility said the gas leak has been brought under control.

"We are looking into the exact damages, cause of the death and details of the incident," the company said in a statement.

Whereas, Andhra Pradesh DGP, Damodar Goutam Sawang said that gas has been neutralized and around 800 were shifted to hospital.&nbsp;

“Right now gas has been neutralised. One of the antidote is drinking a lot of water. Around 800 were shifted to hospital, many have been discharged. An investigation will be carried out to see how this happened,” Andhra Pradesh DGP Damodar Goutam Sawang said.

“Vizag Gas Leak is an accident. They were strictly following all protocols. Investigation underway. Forensic teams are also being sent to the spot,” he added.

As per reports, the gas leakage occurred around 3 am at the LG Polymers industry at RR Venkatapuram near Naiduthota area close to Gopalapatnam. Residents, near the chemical gas plant, reported burning sensation in their eyes and difficulty in breathing, officials said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi prayed for everyone’s safety and well-being while stating that he has spoken to officials at the Home Affairs ministry and the NDMA regarding the incident.

A statement from the Miami Dolphins said Shula had passed away peacefully at his home.

"Don Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years," the Dolphins said in a statement.

"He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scene," the team added.

Shula's career included two Super Bowl wins, a record 347 victories and the only unbeaten season in history when the Dolphins were a perfect 17-0 in 1972 en route to the title.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Shula would be remembered as "one of the greatest coaches and contributors in the history of our game".

"He made an extraordinarily positive impact on so many lives," Goodell said in a statement.&nbsp;

"The winningest coach in NFL history and the only one to lead a team to a perfect season, Coach Shula lived an unparalleled football life."

Shula's heyday came in the early 1970s. Taking over a fledgling Miami side in 1970, he transformed them into a dynasty, reaching three consecutive Super Bowls in 1971, 1972 and 1973.

That hat-trick of appearances included back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1972 and 1973.

But it was the achievements of his invincible 1972 side that helped elevate Shula to the NFL pantheon.

Shula however would later say that his record of 347 wins -- more than other coach in NFL history -- was his greatest source of pride.

Legendary Chicago Bears coach George Halas is second in the all-time standings with 324 wins while New England coach Bill Belichick is on 304.

"The 347 wins is the thing I'm most proud of," Shula said in a 2013 interview. "Nobody's even close to it."

Belichick led NFL-wide tributes for Shula on Monday.

"Don Shula is one of the all-time great coaching figures and the standard for consistency and leadership in the NFL," Belichick said in a statement.&nbsp;

"I extend my deepest condolences to the Shula family and the Dolphins organization."

Meanwhile, quarterback Dan Marino, who played under Shula for more than 10 seasons, wrote on Twitter that the Dolphins coach embodied "the definition of greatness".

"You brought that winning attitude with you every day and made everyone around you better," Marino wrote.

"Thank you for always believing in me. You made me a better player and person...love you coach."

Marino's former Dolphins team-mate and wide receiver Mark Clayton mourned the passing of the "greatest coach in NFL history".

"Coach Shula took a chance on me and the rest is history," Clayton wrote. "My condolences to the family. Best coach on earth, best coach in heaven."

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians wrote simply: "We lost the greatest coach of all time. RIP Coach Don Shula."

Dallas Cowboys&nbsp;owner Jerry Jones meanwhile said Shula had a presence which extended beyond the NFL.

"But at this point in time, it is difficult to predict when international movement and entry restrictions will be lifted by individual countries and territories in order to guarantee that players, their entourage, officials and staff can participate in tournaments safely."

Badminton has already moved the Thomas and Uber Cups, a highlight of the season, to later in the year, hoping that the virus emergency will have passed.
