The tragic Halloween incident in South Korea left a scar on the lives of family members, who lost their loved ones. Now, a motion has been passed by South Korea’s National Assembly demanding the dismissal of Interior Minister Lee Sang-min. The government's response to the Itaewon crush has been criticised as 158 people were killed in the pre-Halloween crowd crush.

On Sunday, the Democratic Party (DP)-controlled parliament passed a no-confidence motion against the interior minister, blaming him for the negligence that led to the fatal incident on October 29.

The Yonhap News reported that the main opposition party used its parliamentary majority to pass the motion, which received support from 182 of the 183 lawmakers who voted, with one vote declared invalid. The report added that the ruling party, which opposed the dismissal motion, boycotted the vote.

Last month, Lee issued an apology for the horrific incident, stating that the nation has unlimited responsibility for the safety of its people. Apart from the interior minister, some government officials have come under fire for the Halloween night massacre in Seoul.

Although, President Yoon Suk Yeol might reject the motion, despite the fact that it was passed.

"Minister Lee hastily tried to minimize the nature and significance of the tragedy by referring to the [Itaewon] disaster as an 'accident' and victims as 'the dead,' and also focused on shirking his ministerial duties by making the excuse that there is no official response outlined in administrative manuals for a [mass gathering] event without an organizer," the motion said.

While WION takes utmost care to accurately report this developing news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos. Ukrainian authorities claimed that fresh Russian strikes left the southern city of Odesa without power on Saturday (December 10). The authorities mentioned that Moscow launched "kamikaze drones" during the night-time attack. Only critical infrastructure such as hospitals and maternity wards had access to electricity as most parts of Ukraine’s southern port city of Odesa were without power. The local officials said Russia used drones to hit energy facilities and parts of the surrounding region were also affected. Odesa mayor, Gennadiy Trukhanov, wrote on Facebook: "Due to the scale of the damage, all users in Odesa except critical infrastructure have been disconnected from electricity." Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the presidential administration, said on Telegram that the city was without electricity at the time of post on the messaging app. He noted that the situation remains difficult, but is under control. Maksym Marchenko, who is the governor of the region of Odesa, claimed that Russia used "kamikaze drones" to attack the post city overnight. He said, "As a result of the strike, there is no electricity in almost all districts and communities of our region." Marchenko also stated that Ukrainian air defence units shot down two drones.
A New Zealand court had taken temporary custody of a sick baby whose parents refused life-saving treatment because the blood donors may be vaccinated against coronavirus (COVID-19). A day after the custody, the baby, who is identified only as Baby W, has undergone a heart surgery and is doing well, The Guardian reported quoting the lawyer of the parents.

The lawyer Sue Grey confirmed to broadcaster RNZ on Friday that the six-month-old baby boy had undergone the procedure and was doing well.

A landmark bill that will give federal protection to same-sex marriage was passed by the US Congress on Thursday (December 8). The bill was passed after a vote of 258-169, with all of the chamber's Democrats and 39 Republicans voting in favour. On the other hand, 169 of the chamber's Republicans voted against it and one voted "present".

President Joe Biden, who vouched for the bill, has promised that he will quickly sign the measure into law. It will be called the Respect for Marriage Act.

The bill had won the senate's approval last month with a vote of 61-36. Shortly before the vote, outgoing House Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "Today this chamber proudly stands with the forces of freedom."

Today's vote was needed to reconcile minor differences with the Senate's version.

Pelosi tweeted on Thursday, "I began my career fighting for LGBTQ communities and now, one of the final bills that I will sign as Speaker will ensure the federal government never again stands in the way of marrying the person you love."

Shortly before the vote, outgoing House Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "Today this chamber proudly stands with the forces of freedom." Today's vote was needed to reconcile minor differences with the Senate's version. Pelosi tweeted on Thursday, "I began my career fighting for LGBTQ communities and now, one of the final bills that I will sign as Speaker will ensure the federal government never again stands in the way of marrying the person you love."
