A US court has denied the latest request by Elizabeth Holmes to remain free and ordered her to start serving prison time on May 30. Holmes sought to appeal her fraud conviction.

But US District Judge Edward Davila set the date on Wednesday for the 39-year-old Holmes, who has to serve 11 years and three months in jail for defrauding investors with her Silicon Valley start-up Theranos.

Holmes was found guilty of deceiving investors into believing she had invented a groundbreaking medical device. She became famous after she said that Theranos' small devices could perform a variety of diagnostic tests with only a few droplets of blood.

In 2014, she was even named by Forbes the world's youngest female self-made billionaire at the age of 30, and her stake in Theranos was valued at $4.5 billion. Theranos went bankrupt after a series of Wall Street Journal stories questioned its technology in 2015.

Media reports have mentioned that US Judge Davila has recommended that she do her time at a women's prison in Texas.

Davila also ordered Holmes and her senior Theranos lieutenant, Ramesh "Sunny" Balwani, to pay $452 million to victims of their scam, including Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch, who is owed $125 million.

Davila and the 9th Circuit rejected Balwani's requests to remain free on bail during his appeal and he began serving his sentence on April 20.

Holmes was supposed to start prison time in late April, but her lawyers filed a last-minute appeal on procedural grounds after an earlier attempt was dismissed.

During the trial, prosecutors said that Holmes misrepresented Theranos' technology and finances. Holmes testified in her own defence, stating that she thought her remarks were correct at the time.

Holmes is appealing several of the judge's judgements, including his acceptance of information about Theranos' test accuracy that predated her investor disclosures.

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes to report to prison in two weeks

The oldest near-complete Hebrew Bible more than 1,000 years old was sold for a whopping $38.1 million in New York on Wednesday (May 17). With a pre-sale estimate of between $30 million and $50 million, the document was auctioned for the first time in more than 30 years.

Sotheby's said that the sale has set a record for the most valuable manuscript ever sold at auction. The Codex Sassoon dates to the late ninth to early 10th century. The hammer was reportedly dropped after a four-minute bidding war between two bidders.

Ambassador Alfred H. Moses of Washington, DC and the Moses family purchased the Codex Sassoon on behalf of the American Friends of ANU and donated it to the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel.

On its website, Sotheby's stated that the Bible is one of the world's "greatest treasures" and holds powerful resonance for the three monotheistic religions and their billions of adherents.

Sotheby's, which is a multinational corporation with headquarters in New York City, noted that the price of the auction has surpassed the 1994 sale of Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester manuscript, which achieved $30.8 million. So far, the most expensive historical document remains one of the first prints of the US Constitution, which was sold for $43 million in November 2021.

Sotheby's said that the sacred words of the bible have been studied, contemplated, and analysed for thousands of years. The Hebrew Bible is made up of twenty-four books that are separated into three sections: the Pentateuch, the Prophets, and the Writings. These texts are known as the Old Testament by Christians, and they are included in the canons of the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches. It has been copied, printed, and translated into scores of languages the world over.

Who was David Solomon Sassoon?

News agency Reuters reported that the Codex Sassoon is named for the previous owner, David Solomon Sassoon, who purchased the Bible in 1929 and amassed one of the twentieth century's most significant private collections of Judaica and Hebraica manuscripts. According to Sotheby's, Sassoon was a prominent scholar and bibliophile.

In an interview with Reuters earlier this year, Sotheby's book and manuscript department's senior consultant of Judaica and Hebraica said: "This manuscript, Codex Sassoon, written around the year 900, contains all the books of the Hebrew Bible in one single format. It is the earliest time that we have an almost complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible."

World's oldest near-complete Hebrew Bible sells for $38.1 million

In a public speech, writer Salman Rushdie warned that freedom of expression in the West is under its most severe threat in his lifetime. The appearance came nine months after being stabbed onstage.

The 75-year-old Rushdie appeared to be leaner than before the attack and was wearing spectacles with one tinted lens. When he was attacked at a literary event last year, he was blinded in his right eye and suffered nerve damage to his hand.

Rushdie received the 'Freedom to Publish' award at the British Book Awards when he delivered a video address.

As quoted by The Associated Press the organisers said the honour "acknowledges the determination of authors, publishers and booksellers who take a stand against intolerance, despite the ongoing threats they face."

During the ceremony, he said, that "we live in a moment, I think, at which freedom of expression, freedom to publish has not in my lifetime been under such threat in the countries of the West."

He added, "Now I am sitting here in the US, I have to look at the extraordinary attack on libraries, and books for children in schools. The attack on the idea of libraries themselves. It is quite remarkably alarming, and we need to be very aware of it, and to fight against it very hard."

Rushdie was stabbed multiple times while he was preparing to deliver a lecture on a stage at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state last year in August.

Rushdie spent years hiding under death threats from Iran because of his infamous novel The Satanic Verses. The novel was banned in many countries with large Muslim populations.

The book was published in 1988 and a year later, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then supreme leader of Iran, pronounced a fatwa, calling upon Muslims to kill the novelist and anyone involved in its publication for blasphemy. Even a bounty worth millions of dollars was raised to murder the novelist.

Rushdie received the Booker Prize in 1981 for his novel Midnight's Children. His most recent work, Victory City, which he finished a month before the attack, was released in February.

IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals hurt Punjab Kings' playoff chances with 15-run win

North Korea's state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim Jong Un inspected a military satellite facility on Tuesday from where the military reconnaissance satellite No. 1 will be launched. According to the report, Kim has also authorised the non-permanent satellite-launching preparatory committee's next stages in the action plan.

The committee is a group dedicated to launching North Korea's first military intelligence satellite.

The state media reported earlier this year that Pyongyang has completed building its first military spy satellite and final preparations to launch the satellite were underway.

So far, there is no information regarding the scheduled date of the launch.

But the report noted that Kim has said that the successful launch of the military reconnaissance satellite is an "urgent requirement of the prevailing security environment of the country".

Last year in December, a report by the state media said that North Korea has executed an "important final-stage" test of launching a military reconnaissance satellite into orbit at its rocket launching site, with plans to finish preparations for the project by April.

The KCNA had reported that the test was carried out at the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground to "evaluate the capabilities of satellite photography, data transmission system, and ground control system".

KCNA said that on Tuesday, "after acquainting himself in detail with the work of the committee, (Kim) inspected the military reconnaissance satellite No. 1, which is ready for loading after undergoing the final general assembly check and space environment test".

One of Kim's primary defence goals for 2021 was the building of a military reconnaissance satellite. Experts in South Korea questioned the results at the time, claiming that the quality of the black-and-white photographs given by North Korea – reportedly captured from a satellite – was poor.

Analysts have said that Pyongyang might face issues while doing satellite reconnaissance with its own technology and without high-tech help from Russia or China.

Yang Moo-jin, who is the president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told news agency AFP last month that "since North Korea's reconnaissance satellites are an important factor in the event of a nuclear pre-emptive strike, they pose a significant threat to the South".

The White House said on Tuesday (May 16) that President Joe Biden may skip a visit to Australia on an upcoming Asia trip because of the US debt ceiling crisis.

The White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said that Biden would depart for Japan on Wednesday as scheduled but a subsequent stop in Australia is being "re-evaluated."

"We're working though, thinking through, the rest of the trip right now," Kirby said, further clarifying that "there's not been a cancellation as yet, but that could happen. We'll see where it goes..."

He noted that Biden would meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australia's Anthony Albanese at the G7 anyway in Hiroshima, Japan.

Kirby didn't confirm anything, but the news agency AFP reported citing two people familiar with Biden's plans that the president will cut short the major trip this week.

The report mentioned that he will return on Sunday to Washington for high-stakes negotiations with Republicans to avert a potentially catastrophic debt default.

According to the individuals who were not authorised to talk publicly, Biden has cancelled scheduled stops in Australia and Papua New Guinea but will still attend the upcoming G7 summit in Japan.

US debt ceiling crisis

Biden and Republican leaders have started high-stakes talks Tuesday aimed at countering a potentially catastrophic US debt default, but Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had warned ahead of the talks that the US could default on its debts as early as June 1.

The Treasury has warned of "catastrophic" implications if the nation runs out of funds to pay its debts, which would leave it unable to pay government employees and trigger a likely rise in interest rates, which would have a significant impact on businesses and mortgage holders.

In a letter to the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, she said, "We still estimate Treasury will likely no longer be able to satisfy all of the government's obligations if Congress has not acted to raise or suspend the debt limit by early June, and potentially as early as June 1."

Both, Biden and McCarthy, have blamed the other side for the failure to make progress in the first round of discussions last week.

McCarthy told reporters at the US Capitol on Tuesday, "We've got to solve the problem. I just want to get in the room and work out the challenge here and come to an agreement."

But Biden accused the Republican Party of holding the economy hostage. He said, "America cannot default on its debt. If we were to do that it would be catastrophic. It would be devastating for America and quite frankly the whole world."

US debt crisis forces Joe Biden to shorten upcoming Asia tour

Inter Milan reached their first Champions League final for 13 years as Lautaro Martinez's sole goal of the match gave them a 3-0 aggregate win against AC Milan on Tuesday.

Inter will undoubtedly be the underdogs against either Real Madrid or Manchester City in the final in Istanbul on June 10, but the way they managed both legs of this all-Milan tie suggests they will be hard to beat.

The key moment of the night at the San Siro came when Martinez exchanged passes with substitute Romelu Lukaku and drilled a shot from inside the penalty area that Milan keeper Mike Maignan allowed in at his near post.

That goal effectively killed off the tie.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Milan had pushed hard in the first half, spearheaded by Rafael Leao who shot across the goal and past the post with one of his side's best chances.

Maignan then superbly dropped to his knees to collect Edin Dzeko's glancing header from Hakan Calhanoglu's pacy free-kick.

Lukaku's introduction in the second half proved the spark that Inter needed to extend their lead.

Absent for much of the season with injuries and with a damaged reputation following a disastrous World Cup with Belgium, Lukaku has slowly worked his way back to his best.

The forward on loan from Chelsea immediately caused problems in the Milan defence and created Martinez's goal to guarantee their place in their first Champions League final since the last time they won European club football's biggest prize under Jose Mourinho in 2010.

"Tutti a Istanbul", the joyous Inter fans sang.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Sam Altman, who is the chief executive officer (CEO) of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, urged lawmakers in the United States on Tuesday to regulate artificial intelligence (AI). Politicians chimed in after experts expressed concerns about the advancements of AI.

Altman weighed in on AI's ability to interfere with election integrity, which will be a "significant area of concern" and added that it needs regulation. He said, "If this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong."

A leading senator opened the session on Capitol Hill with a computer-generated voice that sounded eerily similar to his own. Senator Richard Blumenthal said, "If you were listening from home, you might have thought that voice was mine and the words from me, but in fact, that voice was not mine."

Blumenthal, who is a Democrat, said that AI technologies "are more than just research experiments. They are no longer fantasies of science fiction, they are real and present".

Some experts and critics of AI believe that the technology would increase societal problems such as bias and misinformation, and some even think that AI could end humanity itself.

In recent months, several companies have rushed to bring increasingly versatile AI to market. They have poured unending data and billions of dollars into the effort.

Senator Cory Booker said, "There's no way to put this genie in the bottle. Globally, this is exploding."

Meanwhile, Senator Mazie Hirono pointed out the problems related to the spread of misinformation as the 2024 election nears.

ChatGPT's Sam Altman urges US lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence

United States President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy held talks to discuss the "catastrophic" debt crisis, but the negotiations ended on Tuesday (May 16) after less than an hour, without any breakthrough.

The White House said Biden was "optimistic that there is a path to a responsible, bipartisan budget agreement if both sides negotiate in good faith." But McCarthy told reporters there was still "a lot of work to do" to break the high-stakes standoff with Biden over the borrowing limit.

"I did think this one was a little more productive... We've got a short timeframe here to try to find out how we could come to an agreement," McCarthy told reporters, as he said that Biden is attempting to achieve a debt ceiling agreement before June 1 in order to avert economic disaster.

According to McCarthy, Republican Congressman Garrett Graves will meet with White House counsellor to Biden, Steve Ricchetti, and Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young as part of efforts to resolve the debt ceiling standoff.

The Treasury has warned of dire implications if the country runs out of funds to pay its debts, which would prevent it from paying federal employees and precipitate a likely rise in interest rates, which would have ramifications for businesses, mortgages, and global markets.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Monday that the nation could begin defaulting on its debts "potentially as early as June 1", while the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has forecast June 15.

According to the White House, Biden has asked his staff to "continue to meet daily on outstanding issues," and that he will consult with Republican leaders after returning from the G7 meetings.

Republicans have insisted on large expenditure cutbacks in exchange for their support for raising the debt ceiling, dismissing Democratic requests for a "clean" rise with no strings attached.

The president departs on Wednesday for a three-day G7 conference in Japan, but according to a source, Biden decided on Tuesday to miss subsequent stops in Papua New Guinea and Australia.

The White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said that Biden would depart for Japan on Wednesday as scheduled but a subsequent stop in Australia is being "reevaluated".

"We're working though, thinking through, the rest of the trip right now," Kirby said, further clarifying that "there's not been a cancellation as yet, but that could happen. We'll see where it goes..."
