Indian tech firm Byju's sued by agent linked to $1.2 billion loan: Report

<p>Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on Thursday introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden over his handling of migrant crossings along the United States-Mexico border.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, Greene said: "It is with the highest amount of solemnity that I announce my intention to introduce articles of impeachment today on the head of this America-at-last Executive Branch that has been working since January 20th, 2021, to systematically destroy this country: the President of the United States, Joseph Robinette Biden."&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said that Biden has "deliberately compromised" national security by refusing to enforce immigration laws and secure our border and, allowed approximately six million illegals from over 160 countries to "invade" the country, deprived the border patrol — Customs and Border Protection (CBP) — &nbsp;of the necessary resources and policies sufficient to protect our country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a tweet, she said that Joe Biden's "refusal to uphold our immigration laws has given Mexican drug cartels, human traffickers, violent criminals and terrorists operational control of our border" and for this, "he must be impeached".&nbsp;</p>

<p>She even tweeted that she announced the Articles of Impeachment against Biden, FBI Director Chris Wray, AG Merrick Garland, and Alejandro Mayorkas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And now, she is being "attacked", but further mentioned that she refuses to "back down".&nbsp;</p>

Peshawar: Blast at motorcycle workshop kills one, injures three

<p>A new study reflects on the climate crisis and global warming as it reveals that more than half of the world's largest lakes and reservoirs are drying up.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study which was published on Thursday in the journal Science highlighted that climate change and human activities are endangering lakes, which hold 87 per cent of the world's liquid surface fresh water. However, contemporary trends and sources of lake volume change are largely unknown around the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study titled — Satellites reveal widespread decline in global lake water storage — examined the 1972 largest global lakes using three decades of satellite observations, climate data, and hydrologic models.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study is aimed at finding statistically significant storage declines for 53 per cent of these water bodies over the period 1992–2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the study, the net volume loss in natural lakes is largely attributable to global warming, increasing evaporative demand, and human water consumption. Meanwhile, sedimentation is a dominant reason for storage losses in reservoirs.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>'Lakes are in trouble'</strong></h2>

<p>The authors of the study noted that roughly one-quarter of the world's population resides in a basin of a drying lake, underscoring the necessity of incorporating climate change and sedimentation impacts into sustainable water resources management.</p>

<p>Balaji Rajagopalan, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and co-author of the paper, which appeared in Science, told news agency AFP: "Lakes are in trouble globally, and it has implications far and wide."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It really caught our attention that 25 per cent of the world's population is living in a lake basin that is on a declining trend," he said, indicating that around two billion people are impacted by the findings. Rajagopalan also said that unlike rivers, lakes aren't well-monitored despite their critical importance for water security.</p>

<p>The findings suggest that 53 per cent of lakes and reservoirs saw a decline in water storage, at a rate of approximately 22 gigatonnes a year.&nbsp;</p>

A new study reflects on the climate crisis and global warming as it reveals that more than half of the world's largest lakes and reservoirs are drying up. The study which was published on Thursday in the journal Science highlighted that climate change and human activities are endangering lakes, which hold 87 per cent of the world's liquid surface fresh water. However, contemporary trends and sources of lake volume change are largely unknown around the world. The study titled — Satellites reveal widespread decline in global lake water storage — examined the 1972 largest global lakes using three decades of satellite observations, climate data, and hydrologic models. The study is aimed at finding statistically significant storage declines for 53 per cent of these water bodies over the period 1992–2020. According to the study, the net volume loss in natural lakes is largely attributable to global warming, increasing evaporative demand, and human water consumption. Meanwhile, sedimentation is a dominant reason for storage losses in reservoirs. WATCH | Asia heatwaves 30x more likely due to human activity: Study × 'Lakes are in trouble' The authors of the study noted that roughly one-quarter of the world's population resides in a basin of a drying lake, underscoring the necessity of incorporating climate change and sedimentation impacts into sustainable water resources management. Balaji Rajagopalan, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and co-author of the paper, which appeared in Science, told news agency AFP: "Lakes are in trouble globally, and it has implications far and wide." "It really caught our attention that 25 per cent of the world's population is living in a lake basin that is on a declining trend," he said, indicating that around two billion people are impacted by the findings. Rajagopalan also said that unlike rivers, lakes aren't well-monitored despite their critical importance for water security. The findings suggest that 53 per cent of lakes and reservoirs saw a decline in water storage, at a rate of approximately 22 gigatonnes a year. During the entire study period, 603 cubic kilometres of water were lost, which is 17 times the amount of water in Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. Rajagopalan said, "The climate signal pervades all factors." Fangfang Yao, who is the lead author and a visiting fellow at CU Boulder, added in a statement: "Many of the human and climate change footprints on lake water losses were previously unknown, such as the desiccations of Lake Good-e-Zareh in Afghanistan and Lake Mar Chiquita in Argentina." More than half of world's large lakes and reservoirs drying up: Study

<p>North Carolina Republican lawmakers overrode a veto by the state's Democratic governor to enact a law on Tuesday (May 16) that cuts the window for most abortions in the southern state from 20 to 12 weeks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The law bans elective abortions after the first trimester, except in cases of rape, incest, life-limiting fetal anomalies and medical emergencies. It will curtail access to the procedure for millions of women across the U.S. South where a number of states have greatly restricted abortions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Republican lawmakers were able to override the veto because they hold a supermajority of exactly three-fifths in each chamber, 72-48 in the House and 30-20 in the Senate. Before Governor Roy Cooper vetoed it, the measure whizzed through the legislature in early May in fewer than 48 hours with party-line votes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before the vote, Republican Representative and physician, Kristin Baker, said a doctor's duty is to protect "each and every life, each and every life" thus she was voting in favour.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Julie Von Haefen denounced the bill was being rushed and said it "will hurt women" in the state. "Why are you so determined to subvert the popular will of our state?" Von Haefen asked lawmakers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The White House said the law would "harm patients and threaten doctors for providing essential care," and repeated its call for Congress to enshrine abortion access rights into law nationwide.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The measure requires doctors to be present when abortion medication is given and requires those seeking medical abortions to have an in-person consultation with a doctor 72 hours before the procedure. That will make it more difficult for women from out-of-state to obtain an abortion in North Carolina.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bill includes funding for foster and childcare as well as paid parental leave.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Near-total abortion bans have taken effect in 14 states since the U.S. Supreme Court revoked federal abortion rights in June 2022, according to the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion rights advocacy research group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Abortions in North Carolina rose by 37%, more than any other state, in the first two months after the ruling, according to a study by the Society of Family Planning, a nonprofit that promotes abortion rights and research.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A UN expert has claimed that Russia and China have been sending deadly aid to Myanmar's military. The junta has apparently imported at least $1 billion in arms and other materials since it seized power in the country on February 1, 2021, through a coup.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Myanmar's junta reportedly arrested more than 21,000 people after seizing power and ousting Aung San Suu Kyi's government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the aftermath, the junta reacted with air strikes and heavy weapons after some opponents of military authority took up arms and joined ethnic minority insurgents in some places.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tom Andrews, who is the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, alleged in the report that Russian-made Mi-35 helicopters, MiG-29 fighter jets and Yak-130 light aircraft, and Chinese K-8 jets, have been most frequently used to conduct air strikes. Schools, medical facilities, homes and other civilian sites have been targeted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Andrews said, "Despite overwhelming evidence of the Myanmar military's atrocity crimes against the people of Myanmar, the generals continue to have access to advanced weapons systems, spare parts for fighter jets, raw materials and manufacturing equipment for domestic weapons production."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Those providing these weapons are able to avoid sanctions by using front companies and creating new ones while counting on lax enforcement," Andrews added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The good news is that we now know who is supplying these arms and the jurisdictions in which they operate. Member States now need to step up and stop the flow of these arms," the expert added.</p>

Russia and China amping up Myanmar's military with 'deadly aid': UN expert

<p>Manchester City produced a stunning performance to reach the&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;final as Bernardo Silva's double put Real Madrid to the sword in 4-0 thrashing, securing a 5-1 aggregate win for the English&nbsp;champions&nbsp;on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Eder Militao's own goal and Julian Alvarez's strike in stoppage time rounded off a memorable night for Pep Guardiola's men as they moved to within three wins of matching Manchester United's treble in 1998/99.</p>

<p>A fifth Premier&nbsp;League&nbsp;title in six seasons appears a formality with City needing just three points from their final three games, while United await in the FA Cup final on June 3.</p>

<p>But it is a first ever&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;that City crave the most and they will be strong favourites to finally conquer Europe against Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10.</p>

<p>Seven years into Guardiola's reign as City boss, the home fans were sent into seventh heaven by the quality of a display that rivalled the former Barcelona boss'&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;final wins in charge of the Catalan giants in 2009 and 2011.</p>

<p>Madrid dashed City's dreams at this stage last season with a remarkable comeback from two goals down in the dying seconds of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.</p>

<p>But Carlo Ancelotti's men this time had no answer to City's excellence.</p>

<p>Were it not for Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, the defending&nbsp;champions&nbsp;would have been on the end of a hiding before half-time.</p>

<p>The giant Belgian needed all of his two-metre (6ft 7in) frame to claw Erling Haaland's header round the post.</p>

<p>Haaland had already been denied his 53rd goal of the season by Courtois with another downward header.</p>

<p>Rodri, John Stones and Jack Grealish also saw pot shots fly off target from the edge of the area, but Madrid's luck finally ran out on 23 minutes.</p>

<p>Kevin De Bruyne unpicked the lock as his pass found Silva inside the area, and he smashed high past Courtois' left hand.</p>

<p>The visitors had barely registered a touch inside the City half for the opening half hour, but were inches away from an equaliser 10 minutes before half-time when a piledriver from Toni Kroos rattled the crossbar.</p>

<p>Just as Madrid were beginning to settle, City grabbed the second goal their first half dominance deserved.</p>

<p>The in-form Ilkay Gundogan was denied a fifth goal in May by Eder Militao's block, but the ball looped up kindly for Silva to head into an unguarded net.</p>

<p>Haaland fired another blistering effort just wide and Courtois denied Silva an unlikely hat-trick as City attacks continued in waves before the break.</p>

<p>But they had to show a different side to their game early in the second-half to weather Madrid's reaction and ensure there was no repeat of last season's late drama between the sides.</p>

<p>The closest Real came to a lifeline was a dipping free-kick from David Alaba that Ederson tipped over.</p>

<p>At the other end Courtois continued to win his personal battle with Haaland by turning the Norwegian's shot onto the bar when one-on-one.</p>

Manchester City produced a stunning performance to reach the Champions League final as Bernardo Silva's double put Real Madrid to the sword in 4-0 thrashing, securing a 5-1 aggregate win for the English champions on Wednesday. Eder Militao's own goal and Julian Alvarez's strike in stoppage time rounded off a memorable night for Pep Guardiola's men as they moved to within three wins of matching Manchester United's treble in 1998/99. A fifth Premier League title in six seasons appears a formality with City needing just three points from their final three games, while United await in the FA Cup final on June 3. But it is a first ever Champions League that City crave the most and they will be strong favourites to finally conquer Europe against Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10. Seven years into Guardiola's reign as City boss, the home fans were sent into seventh heaven by the quality of a display that rivalled the former Barcelona boss' Champions League final wins in charge of the Catalan giants in 2009 and 2011. Madrid dashed City's dreams at this stage last season with a remarkable comeback from two goals down in the dying seconds of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. But Carlo Ancelotti's men this time had no answer to City's excellence. The final is set ✅#UCLFinal pic.twitter.com/LBhHRu7j61 — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) May 17, 2023 × Star of the show 🌟#UCL pic.twitter.com/sceP5PEcB6 — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) May 17, 2023 Star of the show 🌟#UCL pic.twitter.com/sceP5PEcB6 — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) May 17, 2023 × What a performance 👏#UCL pic.twitter.com/nCNr7jUyUa — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) May 17, 2023 × Man City are going to the final! 🔵#UCL pic.twitter.com/niNOGO5uYD — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) May 17, 2023 × Were it not for Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, the defending champions would have been on the end of a hiding before half-time. The giant Belgian needed all of his two-metre (6ft 7in) frame to claw Erling Haaland's header round the post. Haaland had already been denied his 53rd goal of the season by Courtois with another downward header. Rodri, John Stones and Jack Grealish also saw pot shots fly off target from the edge of the area, but Madrid's luck finally ran out on 23 minutes. Kevin De Bruyne unpicked the lock as his pass found Silva inside the area, and he smashed high past Courtois' left hand. The visitors had barely registered a touch inside the City half for the opening half hour, but were inches away from an equaliser 10 minutes before half-time when a piledriver from Toni Kroos rattled the crossbar. Just as Madrid were beginning to settle, City grabbed the second goal their first half dominance deserved. The in-form Ilkay Gundogan was denied a fifth goal in May by Eder Militao's block, but the ball looped up kindly for Silva to head into an unguarded net. Haaland fired another blistering effort just wide and Courtois denied Silva an unlikely hat-trick as City attacks continued in waves before the break. But they had to show a different side to their game early in the second-half to weather Madrid's reaction and ensure there was no repeat of last season's late drama between the sides. The closest Real came to a lifeline was a dipping free-kick from David Alaba that Ederson tipped over. At the other end Courtois continued to win his personal battle with Haaland by turning the Norwegian's shot onto the bar when one-on-one. But City won the war to move within one match of completing a transformation in the club's fortunes since an Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008. The next blow to the Spanish giants was self-inflicted as Militao deflected Manuel Akanki's header past Courtois 15 minutes from time. Haaland was replaced by Alvarez two minutes from the end and that was all the Argentine World Cup winner needed to make his mark as he slotted home from Phil Foden's pass. Siddaramaiah to be next CM of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar his deputy: Report

<p>A US court has approved the extradition of Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana to India. The authorities sought Rana for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>New Delhi was expecting the decision as last month, a source-based report mentioned that India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) was preparing to initiate the extradition proceedings against one of the main accused in 26/11 attacks in Mumbai by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in 2008.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India had filed a complaint on June 10, 2020, and had sought the provisional arrest of the 62-year-old with a view towards extradition. The request for the extradition of Rana to India was supported and approved by the Biden Administration.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Judge Jacqueline Chooljian, US Magistrate Judge of the US District Court Central District of California, said, "The Court has reviewed and considered all of the documents submitted in support of and in opposition to the Request, and has considered the arguments presented at the hearing."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 48-page court order dated May 16 was released on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The judge further wrote: "Based on such review and consideration and for the reasons discussed herein, the Court makes the findings set forth below, and CERTIFIES to the Secretary of State of the United States the extraditability of Rana on the charged offences that are the subject of the Request."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Court proceedings&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>During court proceedings, US Government attorneys argued that Rana was aware that his childhood friend, Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley, was involved with the terrorist organisation LeT, and that by assisting Headley and providing cover for his activities, he was supporting the terrorist organisation and its associates.</p>

<p>It was also said that Rana was aware of Headley's meetings, and the attack strategy, including some of the targets. The US government claimed that Rana was a member of the conspiracy and that he committed the substantive crime of commissioning a terrorist act.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the other hand, Rana's attorney spoke against the extradition.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>26/11 attacks&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>On November 26, 2008, India was rocked by a series of terrorist attacks when members of LeT carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks in Mumbai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A total of 166 people, including six Americans and more than 300 were wounded during the attacks that lasted for four days as it ended on November 29 when India's National Security Guards (NSG) conducted Operation Black Tornado to kill the remaining terrorists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Out of 10 attackers, nine were killed and Ajmal Kasab was the only attacker arrested alive by police. He was hanged in Pune's Yerwada jail in secret on November 21, 2012, after he had exhausted all legal remedies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The judge ruled that the extradition of Rana to India is fully under the jurisdiction of the treaty as there is also an extradition treaty in place between India and the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The judge said that India has issued an arrest warrant and charged Rana with the following offences on which the US is proceeding:&nbsp;<br />
(a) conspiracy to wage war, to commit murder, to commit forgery for the purpose of cheating, to use as genuine a forged document or electronic record, and to commit a terrorist act&nbsp;<br />
(b) waging war,&nbsp;<br />
(d) murder,&nbsp;<br />
(e) committing a terrorist act&nbsp;<br />
(f) conspiracy to commit a terrorist act.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The foregoing charged offences constitute extraditable offences within the meaning and scope of the Treaty and over which India has jurisdiction," the judge ruled.</p>

<p>"It is therefore ordered that Tahawwur Hussain Rana be and remain committed to the custody of the United States Marshal pending a final decision on extradition and surrender by the Secretary of State to India for trial of the offences as to which extradition has been granted pursuant to Title 18, United States Code, section 3186 and the Treaty," the judge ruled.&nbsp;</p>
