Thirteen&nbsp;frontline workers including government and private doctors, healthcare and sanitary workers have been infected in the state. Currently, Tamil Nadu has 27 testing centers(including government and private facilities), which the state government claims is the highest in the country. The testing capacity of all these centers put together is 5590 samples per day.

On the delay in receiving the consignment of rapid test kits from China, the chief minister said that no other state in India had received them, adding that the government has been making efforts to get them.

Responding to the criticism against his government from the DMK-led opposition, Palaniswami said that the opposition leader was unable to accept that the government has been efficiently battling COVID-19.

“In other states there is political unity during such unprecedented adversity, but here in Tamil Nadu we have parties that do not cooperate with the government”, he added.&nbsp;

Controversy erupts over food distribution in Tamil Nadu amid lockdown

There are innumerable instances amid busy workdays and lethargic weekends when we find solace in food and drinks from our favorite restaurants.&nbsp;

Our website was launched on April 2 after we decided that, amid the lockdown and job cuts in restaurants worldwide, we need to give back to our favorite restaurants to help them tide over the current crisis and ensure that they are back in business soonest”, Sadagoban the founder of WTF told WION.&nbsp;

“The main challenges that small and medium restaurants face is the lack of cash flow, which cripples them. Our website lists out our partner restaurants and allows patrons to digitally buy a ‘Foodie Card’, costing anywhere between 170 and 800 Rupees. Once the card is bought by a customer, he/she receives an SMS with a unique code. Our team then credits the amount to the restaurant, without charging any fee. The restaurants can use this income to meet their expenses and stay afloat, as business resumes, people can redeem the Foodie cards. How foodies are helping their favourite restaurants amid lockdown

A special fight arrived in Chennai from Kuala Lampur on March 23rd, carrying 113 Indian citizens, who were provided clearance along with their baggage, following which the passengers were quarantined as per government instructions. Since April 1st, seven flights carrying foreign nationals had flown to their respective destinations from the Chennai airport, carrying a total of 1142 passengers. This included four Batik Air flights to Kuala Lampur, two Air India flights to Frankfurt and one Qatar Airways flight to Paris via Doha. All of them are provided with sanitizers as well. When we have flights coming in, we get the information in advance and we would be ready with additional staff, as per the requirement. For urgent medical supplies that reach our foreign post office, we ask the consignee to come and collect it as they could be life-saving medicines or protection equipment that has been sent from abroad” Rajan Chaudhary, Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport told WION. We have so far received 21 shipments in total, which consisted of critical components of ventilators, face masks, digital thermometers and some medicines. “Almost a week back, on the day of Janta Curfew I saw a lot of people roaming on the roads, as though it was some sort of holiday. There was hardly any awareness of the seriousness of the situation. That’s when I decided that something needs to be done about this”, Gowtham told WION.&nbsp;

At first, he made some placards on coronavirus that read, “If you come out I will come in” and handed them over to the police which they displayed at the nearby flyover and intersection. But Gowtham wanted to take his creativity further and give people the “real look and feel of the coronavirus” and how big a threat it was.&nbsp;

Costing less than Rs.500 (most of which was spent on the paint) the corona helmet was made of discarded materials, given that all the shops were closed due to the ongoing lockdown. In five hours the helmet was painted and ready, after which Gowtham offered it to the nearby Police station. He suggested that this would help the cops in sending out a stern statement, even without brandishing their batons(Lathis).

Gowtham says “the intention was to collaborate art and security in a manner that reaches adults and kids. The best part was that Inspector Rajeesh Babu of the Villivakkam station himself chose to wear the helmet and man the temporary check-post along with his team and ask valid questions to create awareness amongst the public. Every time a vehicle passed by he would stop them and ask them rhetorical questions - &nbsp;“Can I come and sit in between you? What if I come close? Why no masks? Do you know who I am? What if I infect you ?”&nbsp;

Now, this campaign is a success and people appreciate the novel method that we have used, but it is all thanks to the Inspector who was receptive towards this off-beat idea. This is enough motivation for me to start work on other art forms and techniques to ensure that people remain home and safe during this lockdown, Gowtham adds.&nbsp;

A novel coronavirus helmet that uses art to enforce discipline

The Chennai Corporation has successfully completed trials for using drones to disinfect inaccessible and congested neighbourhoods in the city.&nbsp;

Developed by the Abdul Kalam Advanced UAV Research Center in the Anna University, each of these drones can spray disinfectants over a large area of up to 2 lakh square meters when deployed on day and night duty.&nbsp;

The usage of drones is meant to enhance the efforts of the corporation which has already deployed over 500 vehicles to disinfect the city. The drones would provide additional reach by enabling coverage of narrow lanes with buildings that are tightly packed.&nbsp;

The drone that is to be used by the Corporation is a modified version of the drone that &nbsp;Anna University had developed to help farmers spray nutrients onto their crops spread across large fields.&nbsp;

“We have modified the mechanism and tweaked the parameters in a way that the centrifugal pump can disperse an ultra-low volume spray. This ensures that every single droplet is broken down into thousands of smaller particles which cover a wider area”, Dr Senthil Kumar added.&nbsp;

Usage of drones drastically reduces the risk of exposure of healthcare workers who are otherwise deployed for disinfecting operations with hand pumps or trucks.

While battery-powered drones need to be grounded and fitted with a new battery every few minutes, the petroleum-powered variant is capable of flying for nearly two hours, after which it can be refuelled and instantly deployed for work.&nbsp;

Petrol-powered drones also require lesser resources and manpower and they can operate for longer durations and need not depend on a portable generator for charging its batteries.&nbsp;

With five drones currently available, there are plans to deploy them for disinfecting large public spaces such as open-markets, railway stations, hospitals etc. &nbsp;

The drones are designed and developed by the Abdul Kalam Advanced UAV Research Center in the Anna University, they are manufactured by private partners, in line with the Make in India initiative.&nbsp;

The usage of drones is meant to enhance the efforts of the corporation which has already deployed over 500 vehicles to disinfect the city. The drones would provide additional reach by enabling coverage of narrow lanes with buildings that are tightly packed. × "Most other drones are battery-powered and have a capacity of holding lesser than 10 litres of disinfectant, whereas our drone is powered by an Internal combustion engine that runs on petrol and can carry 16 litres of disinfectant, thus enabling it to operate for longer hours. Our drone can also perform the spraying from altitudes as less as 3meters to 25meters and have a two-hour endurance", Dr.K Senthil Kumar, Director, Abdul Kalam Advanced UAV Research Center told WION. The drone that is to be used by the Corporation is a modified version of the drone that Anna University had developed to help farmers spray nutrients onto their crops spread across large fields. “We have modified the mechanism and tweaked the parameters in a way that the centrifugal pump can disperse an ultra-low volume spray. This ensures that every single droplet is broken down into thousands of smaller particles which cover a wider area”, Dr Senthil Kumar added. Usage of drones drastically reduces the risk of exposure of healthcare workers who are otherwise deployed for disinfecting operations with hand pumps or trucks. While battery-powered drones need to be grounded and fitted with a new battery every few minutes, the petroleum-powered variant is capable of flying for nearly two hours, after which it can be refuelled and instantly deployed for work. Petrol-powered drones also require lesser resources and manpower and they can operate for longer durations and need not depend on a portable generator for charging its batteries. With five drones currently available, there are plans to deploy them for disinfecting large public spaces such as open-markets, railway stations, hospitals etc. The drones are designed and developed by the Abdul Kalam Advanced UAV Research Center in the Anna University, they are manufactured by private partners, in line with the Make in India initiative.

“We have come across incidents where men and women from our community have been shouted at in public places. Some miscreants and ill-informed people look at us and scream Corona! Our features may be similar to those in the Eastern part of the world, but our fellow Indians should know that we have different types of people in this country. Such discriminatory remarks shouldn’t be happening and we Indians should be united as this is a global crisis. Such incidents are very unfortunate given that there are over 10,000 people from the North East who are in Chennai. They are engaged in academic pursuits, professional careers, and they also work in the malls, restaurants and other informal sectors” Wapang Toshi, President, North East India Welfare Association Chennai, told WION.&nbsp;

The availability of fewer flights, trains coupled with the higher ticket prices and apprehensions about travel has resulted in many people worried about their continued stay in the city.

People of North-East apprehensive as coronavirus-related racist incidents on the rise

Sports and leisure activities meant for special children are hardly imaginable, as they remain dependent on their wheelchairs or simply because there aren’t any activities that are designed specifically for them.&nbsp;

But nearly 250 special children had the opportunity to soar to the skies and have an unparalleled experience of parasailing, that offered them breathtaking views of the Besant Nagar beach in the Chennai.&nbsp;

The special parasailing event was conducted for five days as a part of the 35th-anniversary celebrations of Vidya Sagar, a rights-based organization, with emphasis on creating awareness in the community on issues related to disability and advocating rights for persons with disabilities. They support and train special children who are rejected by other schools, such as those with motor disability, visual, speech or intellectual impairment, autism and other learning difficulties.&nbsp;

“My kids too are special-needs kids and they experienced such adventure sports during their childhood and it made a huge difference, so we believe that why not most special children get to experience this? Even if the kids want to experience it, who gives them the chance? Even a small improvement in their self-esteem is a positive change” said Radha Ramesh, the director of Vidya Sagar.

A parachute equipped with a special harness that could accommodate 2 people- a special-needs child and a faculty member/trainer was attached to a jeep that would be driven for a few meters on the beach sand, thus helping the strong breeze to inflate and elevate the parachute. For nearly 5 minutes the child and the faculty would be suspended mid-air to enjoy the breathtaking views.&nbsp;

“For our needs, we are using a better harness, more safety measures are in place and around 15-20 staff are present for ensuring it happens with utmost care. We've also got the requisite permission from the authorities. Sports is always important for children, our kids dream of having a wheelchair-friendly path until the beach. All over the world beaches are accessible and Wheelchairs can go till the water, but unfortunately, that’s not the case in India. So we thought that parasailing can be made a reality for our kids and they can see and enjoy how the world looks like from a height” Poonam Natrajan, the founder of Vidya Sagar told WION.&nbsp;

Vidya Sagar provides delivery of services, focus on early intervention, special education, physiotherapy, speech and communication therapy, vision training, occupational therapy, co-curricular activities, counselling, vocational training, exploring and creating employment opportunities and training of resource persons to work in the field of disability.

A sky-high experience for special children in Chennai

The Madras High Court has said that actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan can appear before the Central Crime branch Office, instead of the Indian 2 crane accident site at EVP Film City. He had approached the court for urgent relief, alleging harassment from the police. Cops had summoned 24 film crew members, including Haasan to appear at the ancient site on Wednesday morning, for a probe into the tragic crane accident that claimed three lives and injured 10 people.&nbsp;

Kamal had complained that the police were acting under political pressure, forcing him to re-enact the accident scene and that it was causing him mental trauma. He maintains that he had cooperated with the Police investigation for over three hours on March 3rd and that he wouldn’t be able to visit the accident spot, when he still hadn’t gotten over the tragedy and ensuing trauma.&nbsp;

The Police had mentioned that Kamal Haasan, director Shankar and 22 others were issued summons to appear at the accident spot, as they were eye-witnesses in this case. They also emphasized that Kamal Haasan could not be exempt because he was the lead actor in the film and that there wouldn’t be any law and order issues in having the actor appear on-location. Police have clarified that they were merely following procedure and did not harbor political motives.&nbsp;

After appearing before the police on March 3, Haasan said that it was his duty towards his deceased brethren to appear before the police and share the details regarding the accident.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters on March 3rd, the actor had said, “The Commissioner’s Office wanted to seek details about the incident that took place that day. I was one among those who survived that accident. I have explained to the police to the extent that I have known. This is the first step to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.”

In a late-night crane accident on February 19th, at the EVP Film City on the outskirts of Chennai, three technicians had died and ten others were injured. &nbsp;Assistant Director Krishna, Art Assistant Chandran and Production Assistant Madhu had died in the accident.

A day after the accident, Hassan had expressed disappointment and embarrassment at how the film industry could boast of 100cr and 200cr collections but failed to provide basic security for the personnel on set. He also recalled that director Shankar, actor Kajal Aggarwal and himself were among those who had a narrow escape on that fateful night.&nbsp;

“Before 2017 December I have never made mention of politics, prior to that I have maintained that only God will decide. In 1996 had I come to politics, I wondered and thought what should I offer to the people and I started following politics.”&nbsp;

Rajini's three-point agenda

1. "Both mainstream parties AIADMK and DMK have booth committees of around 50,000-60,000 party posts. These posts are needed during elections but aren’t required after winning. But after winning the polls and forming the government, the people holding these posts and their family members will take up contracts, tenders and be an impediment to the implementation of welfare schemes. This is bad for governance, the people and the party. We will keep only those that are needed".

2. "In the current legislative assembly, most members are aged above 50 and 60, those below the age of 50 are very few. New and young people don’t come into politics, if they do, it is because of influence. I envision a party where 60-65 per cent of people are aged below 50. Youth with adequate qualification and a decent social standing. The realigning 30-40 per cent would consist of retired judges, IAS, IPS and politicians. This would also include women. I will invite such genuine people who are admired by the masses and invite them to clean up the system."

3. "All across India, when it comes to state parties the party chief and head of government are the same people. If someone questions the leader, they will be shunted out. I propose one leader for the party and another leader for the government. There will be a council of experts who will recommence the necessary actions and decisions, policies and the political leadership and will be held responsible for implementing it - more like the role of a CEO. The party leader should not interfere in the work of the government and won’t disturb them, but will monitor them like an opposition party and replace those in government if they are found to be at fault.

Rajinikanth also said: “I have never even thought of becoming the CM of Tamil Nadu or sitting in the Assembly and speaking. It is not even in my blood. I want a new wave, new power and&nbsp;new blood to go to seize power in the assembly and Rajini will be a bridge for this”.

He said that he was very confident of his ideas and that as he started speaking to eminent people it was surprising that they didn’t accept it. "Even when I spoke to our district secretaries and told them that I didn’t want to be chief minister, they didn’t agree to it and asked who will join us? “But I say that we don’t need those who are after power, we need those who would come together for the national good.”

He cited the example of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister CN Annadurai who created so many leaders.

“In Tamil Nadu, there are two established political giants who have money and muscle power and in amid this, it will be difficult for us to make an entry.”

Speaking of the ‘Dravidian giants’- the AIADMK and DMK, Rajini said, that the two big leaders of the state are absent and that people could change the 54-year-old rule and that the public needs to think about it.”

“If I back out they will call me a coward, but on the other side, elections are not ordinary, my cadre and party men would spend money and am I not making them sacrificial lambs? “

Taking the names of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda, Rajini said that a new movement should rise, using this opportunity.&nbsp;

“We need to tell people, this is not for Rajini, this is for the people of Tamil Nadu. I’m not here to get 15-20 per cent of the votes and this is my only chance. I am 71 years old and by the next polls in 2026, I will be 76. Once the message reaches more people and the common people want a change, let me see that happen and I will come to make my entry.”

This should spread across India. If political change and government change do not happen today, it will never happen, Rajini said.&nbsp;

Rajinikanth says no desire to become CM, lists three-point agenda

As the world celebrated Women’s day this weekend, a group of men and women at the Army Officers Training Academy, Chennai were cherishing the completion of their 11-month gruelling and rigorous training. At the spectacular Passing out&nbsp;Parade, 167 Indian and 11 foreign cadets were commissioned as officers into the Indian and their respective foreign armies.&nbsp;

There were 136 Gentlemen cadets and 31 Lady cadets who passed out of the Academy, in addition to 11 cadets from friendly foreign countries such as Bhutan, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.&nbsp;

The parade was reviewed by Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff.

Among the commissioned officers were Veer Naris (a martyr's spouse) and various other pathbreakers who have overcome challenges and left behind comfortable jobs to don the Olive greens in service of the nation.&nbsp;

On the process of making provisions for Veer Naris to join the Army, Lt Gen A. Arun, the Chief Instructor of OTA Chennai told WION, “This is not a college or an academy. This is life. This is a life which you join and as co-travellers within the Army, we do not let go even if you fall, stumble or pass away. It is the strongest piece of thread that binds the fabric that is the Army. There is constant encouragement for a martyr’s spouse to join the Army. It starts with counselling, then the lady herself has to choose and we facilitate the choice. But still, not everyone makes it, however, we encourage them to make it.”&nbsp;

“For the Veer Naris, there is no dispensation in the standards to be achieved, except for the age criteria which is relaxed for them. Most of them are elder than the other ladies and gentlemen in their batch, but there is no difference in the standards they have achieved. We don’t let go of our families”, he added.

"I used to work for Mercedes Benz Research and development as a wiring harness engineer. I had worked there for over two and a half years. People ask me why did you join the Army by leaving behind an illustrious and luxurious career when you had a good package and could go to Germany for work. But there was something that was pulling me towards the Indian Army. The passion and feeling that you get from serving your country and commanding your men, it doesn’t measure up to the luxury or the money that you get in the corporate sector. We as Army guys sleep peacefully as we have done something that benefits our citizens, be it a rescue during a natural disaster or fighting a war. I had done eight SSB attempts and this was my last attempt, once I cleared I didn’t think twice and even my company supported me well and here I am getting commissioned."

As the world celebrated Women’s day this weekend, a group of men and women at the Army Officers Training Academy, Chennai were cherishing the completion of their 11-month gruelling and rigorous training. At the spectacular Passing out Parade, 167 Indian and 11 foreign cadets were commissioned as officers into the Indian and their respective foreign armies. There were 136 Gentlemen cadets and 31 Lady cadets who passed out of the Academy, in addition to 11 cadets from friendly foreign countries such as Bhutan, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The parade was reviewed by Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff. Among the commissioned officers were Veer Naris (a martyr's spouse) and various other pathbreakers who have overcome challenges and left behind comfortable jobs to don the Olive greens in service of the nation. On the process of making provisions for Veer Naris to join the Army, Lt Gen A. Arun, the Chief Instructor of OTA Chennai told WION, “This is not a college or an academy. This is life. This is a life which you join and as co-travellers within the Army, we do not let go even if you fall, stumble or pass away. It is the strongest piece of thread that binds the fabric that is the Army. There is constant encouragement for a martyr’s spouse to join the Army. It starts with counselling, then the lady herself has to choose and we facilitate the choice. But still, not everyone makes it, however, we encourage them to make it.” “For the Veer Naris, there is no dispensation in the standards to be achieved, except for the age criteria which is relaxed for them. Most of them are elder than the other ladies and gentlemen in their batch, but there is no difference in the standards they have achieved. We don’t let go of our families”, he added. Today I am here as a commissioned officer, to live the dreams of my husband personally and professionally.
