Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make his first foreign visit to the Maldives after assuming office for his second term, according to Maldivian media Raajje.

"Modi is expected to visit the Maldives from 7 to 8 June," the report added.&nbsp;

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had called PM Modi on May 23 to congratulate him on his re-election.

During his first tenure in 2014, Narendra Modi's first foreign visit was to Bhutan.

There have been a number of high-level visits between the two countries since the new government of President Solih took over in November 2018.&nbsp;

Modi was also present during the swearing-in ceremony of President Solih in November 2018. This was followed by visits of Maldivian Foreign minister Abdulla Shahid and President Solih.

India announced 100 million Maldivian rufiyaa grant aid to the country during External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's visit in March.

Last week, Maldives had announced about two Indian projects to be launched as part of grants in the country.

The projects included Police Academy in Dhaalu Atoll and Convention Centre in Ukulhas, Alif Alif Atoll. The total cost of both the projects will be 14.8 million Maldivian rufiyaa or 960,000 US dollar.

The Maldives is a key country in the Indian Ocean region and lies in the heart of busy shipping lanes connecting Africa with Asia. The previous administration under President Yameen so "India first" policy being replaced by a pro-china policy.

Modi picks Maldives for first foreign visit in second term

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday called PM Narendra Modi to congratulate him on his re-election in the landslide victory last week during which the latter called for creating an "environment free of terrorism." &nbsp;

Government sources have told WION, the purpose of the telephone call by Imran Khan was to congratulate Modi but clarified no invitation was extended&nbsp;for the swearing in of the new government.&nbsp;

President Ram Nath Kovind will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the Prime Minister and other members of the Union Council of Ministers at 7 pm on May 30, at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

While thanking him for the call and greetings, PM Modi referred "to his earlier suggestion to the Prime Minister of Pakistan to fight poverty jointly."

But the focus was also on terror during the call that lasted for 3 minutes 12 seconds.&nbsp;

The Ministry of external affairs said PM Modi, "Stressed that creating trust and an environment free of violence and terrorism which is essential for fostering cooperation for peace, progress and prosperity in our region."

The Pakistani foreign office said, Imran Khan, "Expressed his desire for both countries to work together for the betterment of their peoples and looks forward to working with PM Modi for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia."

This is the first conversation between the two leaders after the Pulwama terror attack on February 14 in which over 40 Indian security personnel died. Pakistan based and United Nations listed terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed took responsibility for the attack.

On the day of the results May 23, Imran Khan has tweeted congratulating PM Modi, "I congratulate Prime Minister Modi on the electoral victory of BJP and allies. Look forward to working with him for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia."

Wishes from all across the world poured-in for Narendra Modi for his re-election for the second consecutive term in the country.

From tweets to phone calls to letters, global leaders made a beeline to congratulate Prime Minister Modi.&nbsp;

Over 20 world leaders congratulated PM Modi for his victory.

The prime minister received calls from 13 leaders including Bangladesh, Bhutan (the king and the PM), Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Russia, France, Japan, Australia, Mauritius, UAE and Israel after his landslide victory.

Leaders from all South Asian countries extended wishes to PM Modi with Sri Lankan leadership being the first and Pakistan being the last via a tweet from Pak PM Imran Khan.

Japan

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the first foreign leader to call PM Modi and congratulate him.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs readout, during the conversation, "Both leaders noted the advances made in the bilateral relationship in the last five years"

The Japanese foreign ministry readout said PM Abe stated that "He would like to closely work with Prime Minister Modi hand in hand toward strengthening Japan-India relations and realising a free and open Indo-Pacific"

PM Modi will be in Japan in the last week of June for the G20 Osaka Summit while Japanese PM will come to India later this year for the next India-Japan Annual Summit.

Israel

Calling PM Modi a friend, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted in Hindi and congratulated him.&nbsp;

UAE

Another leader from West Asia to congratulate PM other than Israel was the United Arab Emirates. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan made a phone call to PM Modi. UAE in April had honoured PM Modi with Zayed Medal, the highest civil honour of the country.

France

French President Emmanuel Macron also made a congratulatory phone call to PM Modi wherein Prime Minister Modi thanked France for its steadfast support to India on critical issues, MEA stated. President Macron described "PM Modi as one of the foremost leaders of the democratic world", the government readout added.&nbsp;

PM Modi will visit France in August 2019 for a bilateral meeting and will also attend the G7 Summit at Biarritz.

China

China was quick to congratulate PM Modi with Chinese President Xi Jinping writing a letter to him. While congratulating PM Modi for re-election, Jinping said, "China-India relations have shown strong momentum of development under the joint efforts of both sides".&nbsp;

In the letter, President Xi noted the great importance he attached to the development of Indo-Chinese relations and his desire to work with Prime Minister Modi to take "Partnership between the two countries to a new height."

Russian President Vladimir Putin also wrote a letter to PM Modi wherein he said, "As the Prime Minister of the Republic of India you will further contribute to strengthening the centuries-old friendship between our people". He further reiterated his "readiness to continue fruitful personal contacts".

The US envoy &nbsp;Ken Juster while congratulating PM Modi said, "The United States looks forward to working closely with our strategic partner India in the years to come."

Australia&nbsp;

PM Modi also received calls from Australian PM Scott Morrison who got re-elected a few days back.

In a tweet, Australian PM said, "Australia and India enjoy a strong, vibrant and strategic partnership" and he looks forward to meeting him.

South Asia congratulates PM Modi

Sri Lanka

In fact, it was a South Asian leader to first congratulate PM Modi with a tweet. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was the first world leader to tweet congratulations at 12.34 pm IST.&nbsp;

In a tweet, he said, "Congratulations to @narendramodi on a magnificent victory! We look forward to working closely with you".&nbsp;

By 1 PM IST, all three top leaders of Sri Lanka - The President, PM and Leader of opposition had tweeted congratulations.

President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena tweeted his country "looks forward to continuing the warm and constructive relationship with India in the future".

While the opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said, "Both our nations will build on the existing strong bilateral relationship that we share".

The Sri Lankan Prime Minister also wrote a letter to PM Modi in which he extended "warmest congratulations" and "sincere best wishes on the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party at the recent general elections of India and your reassumption of the high office of Prime Minister of India".

Bhutan

PM Modi received calls from King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Bhutanese Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering, Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina and Nepal's PM &nbsp;K P Sharma Oli.

Bangladesh

In her congratulatory message to Narendra Modi, Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina said, “I strongly believe that with the renewed mandate given to both of us by our respective peoples, Bangladesh-India ties, which have already been termed as a role model of good neighbourliness, will be further consolidated and our relations will scale newer heights”.&nbsp;

Hasina herself got landslide victory herself during elections in her country in December of 2018.

Maldives

Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and foreign minister also congratulated PM Modi. The Maldivian President said the re election of Narendra Modi "is a strong affirmation of the Indian people's confidence in the BJP/led government"

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid sent a message of congratulations to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in which he said the "win is a decisive endorsement of the sound development policies and active foreign policy of the Government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past five years"

Afghanistan

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani while congratulating PM Modi said, "The government and the people of Afghanistan look forward to expanding cooperation between our two democracies in pursuit of regional cooperation, peace and prosperity for all of South Asia."

Pakistan

Pakistani Prime Minister was the last South Asian leader to congratulate PM Modi. In a tweet, he said, "I congratulate Prime Minister Modi on the electoral victory of BJP and allies." Adding that he looks "forward to working with him for peace, progress and prosperity in South Asia".&nbsp;

World leaders congratulate PM Modi on re-election, 13 leaders call him

The neighbourhood will be a priority and the focus will be on India's ties with the United States and China in the backdrop of Beijing-Washington standoff over trade issue, former envoys said after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-general-elections-2019/lok-sabha-polls-2019-narendra-modi-likely-to-take-oath-as-prime-minister-on-may-30-221221">historic victory of Narendra Modi</a> led-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in country's 17 Lok Sabha elections. Other than this, ties with Iran on the energy front and Russia which is a long-standing ally of India will also be in focus.&nbsp;

Our principal diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal spoke to 11 former Indian envoys on focus areas for the new government and the challenges ahead.

"The new government will have its hands full. And one of the many priorities would be the immediate neighbourhood- Sri Lanka Afghanistan and Pakistan should be higher on the list- need to work with Sri Lanka, work on Pakistan and with and for Afghanistan &nbsp;as it stands on a critical crossroad.US Taliban talks seem to have hit the wall of Taliban's intransigence andIR inflexibility. Ashok Sajjanhar, former Ambassador of India to Kazakhstan, Sweden and Latvia said, "Relations with the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/imf-warns-us-china-trade-war-will-jeopardize-2019-global-growth-221117"> US and China</a> will be the most challenging. India will have to deftly and skillfully deal with China's ascendancy and assertiveness through both cooperation and competition to safeguard and promote its strategic and economic interests. With Washington, India will need to ensure that America's growing capriciousness and unpredictability on trade matters does not adversely impact on the rapidly advancing bilateral strategic partnership. Energy security and prices, Pakistan, Afghanistan and West Asia are other challenges looming on the horizon which will need to be attended to urgently."

Kanwal Sibal, former Foreign Secretary said, "Standing up to the US &nbsp;on issues where it’s policies hurt our interests while maintaining the forward momentum of our ties. Keeping China engaged while boosting the Indo-Pacific concept. Preserving close ties with Russia as we become closer to the US and participate in hedging policies towards China."

Sharat Sabharwal, former High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ambassador to Uzbekistan, said, "Managing the relationship with a fast-rising and increasingly assertive China will remain the major foreign policy challenge of the new government. But an immediate crisis that the government may have to deal with is the mounting tension between the US and Iran, with the potential of a military conflict and its impact on India's energy supplies from West Asia and the large Indian diaspora there."

Anil Trigunayat, former Ambassador to Jordan Libya and Malta, said, "The biggest challenge in my view will be in managing the US especially with regard to our engagement with Russia and Iran as blatant unilateralism has the potential to undermine our strategic autonomy. &nbsp;If the US-Iran confrontation crosses the threshold it will have the worst repercussions for our energy security and diaspora welfare in the Gulf region."

Vijay K Nambiar, India’s former Permanent Representative to United Nations and former envoy to Pak, China, Afghanistan, said, "We are increasingly presenting an image to the outside world of an angry "underdog" power wanting to disrupt the status quo. Our biggest challenge, in the coming period, therefore, will be to preserve our traditional soft power image of an open, inclusive and introspective society that, while confident and unselfconscious about its own particularities, is willing to adopt a humane and harmonious attitude towards the outside world and to learn from others."

Deepa Wadhwa, a former envoy to Qatar, Japan, Sweden, Latvia and the Marshall Islands, said, "Sidhant, I believe the first issue the new government will have to confront, will be the fallout of the US-Iran standoff and its effect on our interests in the Middle East. The other priority will be our relationship with the US and in particular, deteriorating trade ties."

"There are perennials of our relations with China and the new government will soon have an opportunity to convey our sensitivities and concerns while batting for improved relations at the second informal summit to be held between the leaders of the two countries in the latter half of the year," Wadhwa added.

Anil Wadhwa, former Indian envoy to Italy, Poland, Oman and Thailand said, "The biggest challenge facing the new government will be the management of its complex web of relationships with the United States, Russia and China, and adapting and keeping pace with the new technological revolution which is changing the way countries operate and move forward in their domestic and external policies."

Bhaswati Mukherjee, a former Indian envoy to the Netherlands, said, "Managing the contradictions in the US-China relationship and its impact on India if a full-fledged trade war breaks out. Balancing out the relationship with Russia in the context of our strategic partnership with the US. Preparing for a meltdown in Afghanistan with the withdrawal of US troops."

Rajiv Dogra, former Indian envoy to Italy and consul general to Karachi "The biggest foreign policy challenge of the new government will be it, itself. If it flips -flops and changes direction whimsically it hands over the policy advantage to others. All said and done the coming months will test the new government repeatedly on the foreign policy front."

Neelam Deo, former Indian Ambassador to Denmark and Ivory Coast said, "With Prime Minister Modi’s return to the office, India will have continuity in foreign policy direction. We can expect an enhancement in the initiatives started in PM Modi’s first term. For example. a strong outreach to members of the Quad – Japan, USA and Australia in defence, especially on maritime matters. There will be an increased focus on building infrastructure, for example in partnership with Japan in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as well as Africa under the Asia Africa Growth Corridor. In its second term, the Modi government will move rapidly to put more content into its relationship with the West, especially the US, while the Gulf countries will be the focus of energy diplomacy."

Lok Sabha election 2019: US, China and neighbouring countries to be focus areas of new government, say former envoys

After taking over as the prime minister in his second term, Narendra Modi's first visit will be a country in the neighbourhood but it will not be in Bhutan. The visit will take place in early June.

During Modi's first tenure as the prime minister, his first visit was to Bhutan in June 2014.&nbsp;

PM Modi will have seven foreign visits scheduled in the next seven months, Kyrgyzstan, Japan, France, Russia, Thailand, Brazil and a country in the neighbourhood.&nbsp;

The visits will see him interact with global leaders and see a consolidation of his foreign policy actions and gains from his first term.

June: Kyrgyzstan, Japan

Other than a visit to a South Asian country, June will see two more major visits. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO summit from June 13 to 15 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan which will begin from June 28 to 29.

The SCO includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan as well as India and Pakistan. The SCO summit will be the first time PM Modi and his Pakistani counterpart &nbsp;Imran Khan will be under the same roof and the big question will be if they will meet.&nbsp;

There hasn't been any formal dialogue between India and Pakistan since years now. The last time India took initiative was on December 25 in 2015 when PM Modi landed in Lahore. But, days after India's initiative, Pathankot attack happened which resulted in the breakdown of Indo-Pak ties.&nbsp;

The SCO summit could also see the first meet between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping since the listing of Masood Azhar, chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed, a terrorist organisation.

In 2018, Modi-Xi met four times, starting with the famous informal summit in Wuhan, China. The Chinese president will be visiting India this year for the second informal summit.&nbsp;

G20 summit in Japan will also serve as the first major platform for PM Modi to meet global leaders including a likely meet with US President Donald Trump.&nbsp;

In 2018, during the G20 meet in Argentina, PM Modi met Donald Trump as part of a trilateral, Japan, America and India (JAI), in which Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was also present.&nbsp;

Another trilateral, Russia, India, China (RIC) saw the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping along with PM Modi.&nbsp;

Both the trilaterals&nbsp;are expected to meet this time as well.

August: France

This will be followed by participation of Indian PM at the G7 summit in Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France from August 25 to 27.&nbsp;

India has been invited by France, which is the chair this time, to participate at the G7 summit. During his congratulatory call to PM Modi on Thursday, French President Macron reiterated his invitation to visit France in August for a bilateral meeting and also to attend the G7 Summit at Biarritz.

In 2005, India was present at the G7 summit with participation of the then Indian PM Manmohan Singh. &nbsp;The G7 group consists of US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Japan &amp; Italy.

September: Russia

In September, PM Modi is going to Russia to participate in the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in the far eastern city of Vladivostok from September 4 to 6.&nbsp;

PM Modi has spoken to Putin three times in 2019, the first time on January 1 and the second time on January 28 during which the latter extended the invitation for the EEF. On Thursday Putin called Modi third time to congratulate him for his landslide victory in country's 17 Lok Sabha polls.

On January 1, a Russian government official readout the first phone conversation between Putin and Modi in which it was stated, "The President of Russia invited the Prime Minister of India to take part in the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in September 2019 as the main guest."

During PM Modi's second term he might also go for the United Nations General Assembly in New York that starts on September 17 and ends on September 30.&nbsp;

November: Thailand, Brazil

November will see PM Modi going to Bangkok for the East Asia Summit which takes place on third of that month followed by BRICS summit in Brazil from 11-13 November.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO summit from June 13 to 15 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan which will begin from June 28 to 29. The SCO includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan as well as India and Pakistan. The SCO summit will be the first time PM Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan will be under the same roof and the big question will be if they will meet. There hasn't been any formal dialogue between India and Pakistan since years now. The last time India took initiative was on December 25 in 2015 when PM Modi landed in Lahore. But, days after India's initiative, Pathankot attack happened which resulted in the breakdown of Indo-Pak ties. G20 summit in Japan will also serve as the first major platform for PM Modi to meet global leaders including a likely meet with US President Donald Trump. In 2018, during the G20 meet in Argentina, PM Modi met Donald Trump as part of a trilateral, Japan, America and India (JAI), in which Japanese PM Shinzo Abe was also present. Another trilateral, Russia, India, China (RIC) saw the participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping along with PM Modi. August: France This will be followed by participation of Indian PM at the G7 summit in Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France from August 25 to 27. India has been invited by France, which is the chair this time, to participate at the G7 summit. During his congratulatory call to PM Modi on Thursday, French President Macron reiterated his invitation to visit France in August for a bilateral meeting and also to attend the G7 Summit at Biarritz. In 2005, India was present at the G7 summit with participation of the then Indian PM Manmohan Singh. The G7 group consists of US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Japan & Italy. September: Russia In September, PM Modi is going to Russia to participate in the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in the far eastern city of Vladivostok from September 4 to 6. PM Modi has spoken to Putin three times in 2019, the first time on January 1 and the second time on January 28 during which the latter extended the invitation for the EEF. On Thursday Putin called Modi third time to congratulate him for his landslide victory in country's 17 Lok Sabha polls. On January 1, a Russian government official readout the first phone conversation between Putin and Modi in which it was stated, "The President of Russia invited the Prime Minister of India to take part in the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in September 2019 as the main guest." During PM Modi's second term he might also go for the United Nations General Assembly in New York that starts on September 17 and ends on September 30. November: Thailand, Brazil November will see PM Modi going to Bangkok for the East Asia Summit which takes place on third of that month followed by BRICS summit in Brazil from 11-13 November. Four leaders, Japan's PM Shinzo Abe, Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel, Putin and Xi Jinping are scheduled to visit India.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping both will be coming to India for the 2nd informal summit. In May last year, PM Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for an informal summit in the resort town of Sochi in Russia.

In April 2018, PM Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping for the informal summit in Wuhan which came in the backdrop of Doklam crisis of 2017 which saw a standoff between the Indian and the Chinese armies in the Bhutanese territory claimed by Beijing.

Another important visit will be that of the German Chancellor who will be visiting India for the 5th Intergovernmental Consultation. Confirming the visit, the new German envoy, Walter J Lindner told WION, "Chancellor will come again to India, at the end of the year. We have not yet fixed the date, but it will be October and November."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit is yet to be confirmed, New Delhi was ready to host the Isreali leader even before the dates of general elections were announced. The visit could not take place due to scheduling issues.

Asked when the visit will happen, Isreali envoy to India Ron Malka told WION, "hopefully in the near future, we will see, some kind of a visit, I am not sure when it will be, it is a matter of schedule. The PM wanted to come and will come."

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will also be visiting India this year for the 14th India-Japan Annual Summit that alternates its location between India and Japan. Ready to work with new government in India: Chinese foreign minister 

Terror, connectivity and Afghanistan were the main focus areas for India during External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj statement at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.&nbsp;

SCO's Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure or RATS has emerged as an important forum for counter-terror cooperation and India called for making it more effective.

On connectivity, India talked about five connectivity initiatives the International North-South Transport Corridor that will connect Mumbai with Moscow, Chabahar Port that will connect India to Afghanistan &amp; beyond, the Ashgabat Agreement for central Asia connectivity, the India Afghanistan air corridor &amp; towards the east the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway.

But New Delhi said the connectivity projects needs to be, "inclusive, sustainable, transparent and respect the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity", a comment that questions Chinese Belt &amp; road initiative that is causing debt crisis in many countries participating in it.

On Afghanistan, Sushma Swaraj said, "India stands committed to any process" which can help "Afghanistan emerge as a united, peaceful, secure, stable, inclusive and economically vibrant nation, with guaranteed gender and human rights."

Comments on Afghanistan comes in the backdrop of Delhi's increased engagement with stakeholders such as the US, China, Iran and Russia on the Afghan peace process.

This is the last high-level engagement of Sushma Swaraj in a foreign country as the external affairs minister under the present government.&nbsp;

This is the second SCO FMs meet in which New Delhi is participating as a full member of SCO, the first meet held in April of 2018 in Beijing.&nbsp;

India speaks out against terror at SCO FMs' meet in Kyrgyzstan

As part of 100 million Maldivian rufiyaa grant aid announced during External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's visit to the Maldives in March 2019, India will be building two projects in the country.&nbsp;

The projects include Police Academy in Dhaalu Atoll and Convention Centre in Ukulhas, Alif Alif Atoll. The total cost of both the projects will be $960,000.

Maldivian foreign ministry said, "The purpose of Police Academy is to provide modern training to police officers, and the necessary skills and knowledge required to perform their duties efficiently and effectively."

"The aim of the grant assistance is to conduct socio-economic development projects across the country which are of high impact,'' Ministry added.

The development comes even as reports emerged that India and Japan are planning to build part of Colombo port in Sri Lanka even as Chinese attempts to make inroads in the region, especially through its belt and road initiative.

During Sushma Swaraj's&nbsp;visit in March, Maldives requested Indian assistance for the construction of a cricket stadium which New Delhi is currently looking into.

Interestingly, Maldivian Foreign minister Abdulla Shahid met with a delegation from Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) led by General Manager, Cricket Operations Saba Karim on Tuesday.

India to build police academy, convention centres for Maldives

Afghanistan's government has lauded the support it has received from India, especially on the Afghan peace process. Afghan foreign ministry's spokesperson Sibghatullah Ahmadi spoke to WION from Kabul and said, "India supports a peaceful Afghanistan" with its backing of the Afghan government.

Ahmadi has welcomed the regional and international efforts for facilitating direct talks between the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Taliban representatives "in particular Germany and India’s recent engagements in this regard".

He further called for "tangible actions to be taken by Pakistan aimed at peace in Afghanistan".

The development comes even as last weeks saw hectic engagements in New Delhi regarding the Afghan peace process. US permanent representative on Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad, Chinese special envoy on Afghanistan Deng Xijun and chief executive of the Afghan High Peace Council <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-has-helped-build-strong-state-in-afghanistan-pak-must-shun-terror-afghan-presidents-special-envoy-to-wion-219460">Mohammad Omar Daudzai visited Delhi</a> this month and met External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to discuss the developments in the landlocked South Asian country.

India had also discussed the Afghan peace process with the visiting Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif. Poland's Ambassador to India Professor Adam Burakowski has said that the new Indian government should be even more open to the world especially Europe and Poland. In a candid interview to WION, he spoke about several issues regarding India-Poland ties,&nbsp;trade, terror and how India saved more than 1000 Polish children in World War II.

WION: How do you see India, Poland ties?

Professor Adam Burakowski: The relations between India and Poland are growing. This year in September we will have the historical movement of reopening the direct flight between Delhi and Warsaw. After 25 years, we are reconnecting out capitals. Also, our economic ties are growing. We have reached $3 billion mutual yearly exchange. Indian community in Poland is growing especially the students. We have around 4000 students from India studying in Polish universities.&nbsp;

WION: Expectations from the new Indian government?

Professor Adam Burakowski: I hope the new government will be even more open to the international world including Europe and Poland. Poland is a member of the European Union for 15 years. The country has a good environment for Indian companies to invest in. If you invest in Poland you will have access to all the European Union market.

WION: Terror has been a major issue. Europe has been a major target for terror networks. How do you plan to deal with the scourge?

Professor Adam Burakowski: Fortunately, Poland hasn't been the target of any terrorist attack in recent years. But we are preparing ourselves and our security forces are aware of the threat. We would like to cooperate with every country that has anti-terrorism on its agenda and India is one of them.

WION: Can you shed some light&nbsp;on the historic ties between the two countries and how India helped Poland in World War II?

Professor Adam Burakowski: Poland and India both have been always friendly towards each other. In 19th centuries, our countries were occupied by foreign powers so we share a common experience. In World War II India welcomed a big number of Polish refugees in camps. One was in Balachadi near Jamnagar, the local maharaja hosted 1000 polish children. And second was in Valivade, Kolhapur, the Maharaja also contributed in sheltering 5000 polish children in the world war. We established ties in 1954.

In a candid interview to WION, he spoke about several issues regarding India-Poland ties, trade, terror and how India saved more than 1000 Polish children in World War II. WION: How do you see India, Poland ties? Professor Adam Burakowski: The relations between India and Poland are growing. This year in September we will have the historical movement of reopening the direct flight between Delhi and Warsaw. After 25 years, we are reconnecting out capitals. Also, our economic ties are growing. We have reached $3 billion mutual yearly exchange. Indian community in Poland is growing especially the students. We have around 4000 students from India studying in Polish universities. WION: How have been the trade ties?
