Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's political career appeared to have entered a turbulent storm after his Liberal party suffered a major setback in a by-election held in Toronto district, which is considered the safest Liberal seat in the country.

The shocking defeat has raised questions over Trudeau's 'political longevity'.

“This was obviously not the result we wanted, but I want to be clear that I hear people’s concerns and frustrations,” said Trudeau, while speaking about his party’s results in Toronto-St. Paul’s riding.

“These are not easy times. And it is clear, that I and my entire Liberal team, have much more hard work to do to deliver tangible, real progress that Canadians can see and feel. My focus is on your success and that’s where it’s going to stay," he added.

United States President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are believed to have treated their various real estate holdings in Delaware as their personal ATM for years by using them for various mortgages and refinancing them for not less than 35 times, according to a report.

The couple, whose reported net worth is $10 million, have allegedly borrowed $6 million against their properties for many years.

The dealings over their homes in Delaware are likely to have started in the late 1970s just after Joe and Jill got married.

According to a report published in the Daily Mail, the mortgage or credit deals were negotiated by the couple after approximately every 17 months. Such frequent refinancing has left the finance experts puzzled.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense unless they were desperate for cash,” said a finance expert, while speaking to Daily Mail.

The revelations made in the report have further added mystery to the financial past of his family as the president faces scrutiny over financial transactions.

Biden's murky financial transactions

The current residence of Bidens is a mansion which was purchased in 1996 and has an outstanding $541,000 mortgage after nearly three decades, as per records.

“Why would anyone view their home as an ATM?” LA realtor Tony Mariotti said while speaking to the Daily Mail.

“Over time, mortgage fees really add up. Paying off a mortgage… is like a forced savings account that bears modest interest,” Mariotti added.

As per the records, in 1996 the current four-acre spread was purchased by Bidens for $350,000 and they have since leveraged it with 20 different home credit agreements as well as mortgages totalling $4.23 million.

Bidens' other major property is a summer home in Rehoboth Beach which was purchased in 2017 for $2.74 million. It was a cash purchase and had no mortgages attached to it.

However, financial records of Bidens show that they have significant debt and have a mortgage on the Wilmington home as well as an equity loan on the same property.

The family's total liabilities fall between $350,000 and $850,000. Their estimated assets fall between $1 million and $2.6 million.

According to the records, the Bidens have sanctioned 13 home loans and two credit agreements between 1978 and 1994 which totals $1.72 million.

North Korea faces rare missile test failure amid war of trash balloons with South Korea

In a new study, a stunning revelation was made when currents were uncovered amid the turbulence which eerily reflected the winds flowing in the Earth's atmosphere and hinted that there can be some hidden forces which connect them.

According to a team of researchers from the University of Rostock in Germany and Kyushu University in Japan, the new discovery can help us better understand the environmental systems which circulate around the Earth. It is also likely to improve space and Earth weather forecasts.

At the top of Earth’s lower atmosphere, a layer of diffuse gases is present. This makes up the troposphere and stratosphere.

Larger statistical patterns are present within the swirl of winds which can be used by scientists to figure out deep mechanics of meteorology.

Till now, the structure of the thermosphere has remained mainly unexplored.

In the new findings, patterns have been identified that reflect similar structures which have been measured far below.

"This means that both the thermosphere and the troposphere – despite having drastically different atmospheric compositions and dynamics – follow the same physical laws," said space scientist Huixin Liu, from Kyushu University.

"How the energy flows and dissipates in these two regions is very similar,” he added.'

Here's how the team analysed the winds

To reach the study’s conclusions, the cross-track winds were analysed by the team in the thermosphere with the use of satellite data from the Challenging Minisatellite Payload and the Gravity Field and Steady State Ocean Circulation Explorer.

In their analysis, the researchers used third-order structure functions which are statistical tools that help spot patterns in winds and turbulence.

The researchers observed that even though there were different conditions in each atmosphere layer, a lot of the 'rules' remained the same.

It was also observed that the tendency of the winds to circle in one direction was the same in the thermosphere and the lower atmosphere.

"This suggests that similar underlying large-scale turbulence mechanisms may be at play," stated the researchers in their published paper.

"Similar to atmospheric weather forecasting, comprehending the energy distributions in the thermosphere is vital to advance our understanding of space dynamics," Liu said.

"We hope these findings can be used to improve space weather forecasting and ensure the continued functionality and safety of satellite-based technologies essential to everyday life," he added.

Is the wind on Earth being controlled by currents at the edge of space? Study hints so

Archaeologists made an unexpected discovery when they unearthed a jar of wine - which was filled with the drink and tightly sealed - in an ancient tomb nearly 2,000 years after it was buried.

The wine was recovered among the grave goods which were accompanying a Roman man in his burial. The Romans had filled his cremated remains in a glass container before sealing it.

The wine, which was once sweet, has now a reddish colour and is filled with human dust.

With the reddish stain and human dust, this wine is now the oldest known vintage of the world, going beyond the 4th century CE Speyer wine bottle by hundreds of years.

Archaeologist Juan Manuel Román of Carmona's Museum of the City said, "We were very surprised that liquid was preserved in one of the funerary urns."

Archaeologists in 2019 stumbled upon the chamber in southern Spain which was till then sealed and its contents were preserved for thousands of years.

The archaeologists found various luxurious grave goods – patchouli perfume, jewels and jewellery, fabrics, glass objects, and a large lead container.

However, after opening the container, the researchers were left shocked when they discovered a sealed glass urn which was half-filled with some sort of liquid.

In ancient Roman times, it was a known funerary practice to pour wine on the cremated remains. However, there is also little chance that the liquid entered into the urn by mistake.

How do scientists analyse the wine?

Headed by the University of Cordoba's chemist Daniel Cosano in Spain, the researchers held a comprehensive series of chemical analyses to determine what the liquid actually was.

In a miraculous medical achievement, the doctors were able to perform a kidney transplant successfully on a man who was awake throughout the procedure in the United States.

The man, identified as John Nicholas, on May 24 became the first to have gone through a kidney transplant with general anaesthetic at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. He was discharged the next day.

This is not the first time this procedure has been used worldwide, however, it is far from routine.

In 24 hours, the doctors discharged the 28-year-old man. This was superfast in comparison to kidney transplant patients remaining at the hospital for nearly a week.

Here's how the doctors carried out nearly impossible surgery

During the surgery of Nicholas, an anaesthetic was injected into the fluid which was surrounding the lower spinal cord by the doctors. They also lightly sedated the patient for comfort, as per a statement.

It took less than two hours to complete the surgery and Nicholas didn't feel any pain. During the procedure, at one point he was also able to see his new kidney, which was donated to him by his best friend Pat Wise, before the doctors implanted it into his body.

"That particular moment where I saw the kidney in Dr. Nadig's hands — like [it was] extremely powerful to see that," said Nicholas at a press conference Monday (June 24).

Nicholas has been facing kidney issues since he was 16 which eventually led to the need for a transplant. According to the lab, his kidneys were being damaged by inflammation.

Weeks after the surgery, Nicholas is now active and enjoying a less restrictive diet. He is also able to eat his favourite pizza, as per the statement.

He was asked to control his salt intake before the surgery because excess salt can lead to detrimental impacts on kidney function.

"I've hit 10,000 steps, I think, every day in the last week and I don't do that normally. So definitely doing well," said Nicholas.

At a press conference, Dr Satish Nadig, one of the surgeons who performed the transplant, said that spinal and local anaesthetic instead of general anaesthesia had not been used for the first time.

According to the study, if a planet is modified by the aliens in their solar system to make it warmer, scientists will now be able to detect it.

A new study, conducted by The University of California, Riverside, has identified the artificial greenhouse gases which will help find a terraformed planet (a kind of planet which has been artificially modified to be hospitable for life).

In the study, the gases described are fluorinated versions of methane, ethane, and propane, along with gases which have a mixture of nitrogen and fluorine or sulfur and fluorine. These gases can be detected with the use of existing technology in the atmospheres of planets which are outside our solar system.

The finding of gases which hint at extraterrestrial existence has also increased the possibility of the James Webb Space Telescope spotting an alien civilisation one day.

How fluorinated gases will make alien detection easy on James Webb telescope?

The gases, in large volumes, will act as pollutants if present on Earth. The warming power in Sulfur hexafluoride is 23,500 times in comparison to carbon dioxide. A freezing planet can be heated by the presence of a small amount of this gas to the point of creating liquid water persistently.

Scientists have also found potential reasons for these gases getting used by the extraterrestrials on an exoplanet.

Lead author of the study and astrobiologist Edward Schwieterman said, “[They’d] be good for a civilization that perhaps wanted to forestall an impending ice age or terraform an otherwise uninhabitable planet in their system, as humans have proposed for Mars."

Since these gases do not occur in large quantities naturally, they need to be manufactured. If the gases are found, they will hint at the existence of intelligent, technology-using life forms.

The gases are able to exist for longer duration and are capable of existing for up to 50,000 years on Earth-like atmospheres.

The gases can be very useful to the James Webb telescope as an infrared signature will be produced from the fluorinated gases on terraformed planets.

Scientists have not been able to quantify the likelihood of finding these gases in future, however, there is a possibility of detecting them during currently planned missions.

“You wouldn’t need extra effort to look for these signs, if your telescope is already characterising the planet for other reasons. And it would be jaw-droppingly amazing to find them," said Schwieterman.
