Bond markets poised for gains if Biden re-elected: Morgan Stanley CIO

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said to the militant group Hamas that it is "time for the haggling to stop" after "numerous changes" were proposed by its leaders to a plan for a Gaza ceasefire as well as hostage release deal.&nbsp;

In Doha, he informed the reporters that a few of the changes were "workable" and others were not workable, but that the United States and mediators Qatar and Egypt will "try to close this deal".

On Tuesday (June 11), Hamas said that it was willing to "deal positively" with the process, however, it emphasised the need for Israel to agree to full withdrawal from Gaza and a permanent ceasefire.&nbsp;According to The Times Of Israel, the main issue on which the deal is getting stuck is that the Palestinian terror group has been demanding an Israeli guarantee up front which will agree to a permanent ceasefire.

The proposal has not been publicly endorsed by Israel's prime minister which US President Joe Biden had claimed was offered by the country while outlining it 12 days ago.&nbsp;

However, Blinken said Benjamin Netanyahu had "reaffirmed his commitment" in a meeting in Jerusalem on Monday (June 10). A resolution was passed by the UNSC in support of the proposal and he added that Washington DC has been exerting diplomatic pressure.

At a press conference, Blinken said that they were discussing the changes which were requested by Hamas to the US-backed ceasefire proposal.

"A deal was on the table that was virtually identical to a proposal that&nbsp;Hamas put forward on 6 May&nbsp;- a deal that the entire world is behind, that Israel has accepted, and Hamas could have answered with a single word: 'yes'," Blinken said.

"Instead, Hamas waited nearly two weeks and then proposed more changes, a number of which go beyond positions that it had previously taken and accepted. As a result, the war that Hamas started… will go on, more people will suffer, Palestinians will suffer, more Israelis will suffer," he added.

Hamas issued a statement, in which the terror group called for "a complete halt of the ongoing aggression against Gaza" and the Israeli forces' full withdrawal.

Hamas political bureau's member Izzat al-Rishq said their response was "responsible, serious and positive" and had opened up "a wide pathway" for reaching an agreement.

Hamas, later in a statement, said that they have shown "full positivity" in its efforts to reach an agreement and have appealed to Blinken to put "direct pressure" on Israel.

Even after facing setbacks, Blinken said the United States, along with Egypt and Qatar, will "try to close this deal".

"I believe those gaps are bridgeable. But that doesn't mean they will be bridged because, ultimately, Hamas has to decide," Blinken said.

Meanwhile, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani said that both Israel and Hamas are required to make some concessions.

"We are witnessing a shift in this conflict in the recent period and there is a clear and firm call to end this war," he said.

"In the coming weeks, we will put forward proposals for key elements of a 'day after plan', including concrete ideas for how to manage governance, security, reconstruction," Blinken said.

<h2 class="MsoNormal">IMF releases $336 million as part of bailout program<o:p></o:p></h2>

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the second review of Sri Lanka's $2.9 billion bailout package, authorising the flow of around $336 million to the crisis-hit nation. The global lender acknowledged signs of economic growth in a statement issued on Wednesday but warned that the country's economy remained highly vulnerable and that achieving debt sustainability remains a challenge.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">IMF urges swift debt restructuring<o:p></o:p></h2>

The IMF has urged the Official Creditor Committee (OCC), which comprises key lenders Japan and India, to complete a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as soon as possible. It also encouraged complete agreements with the Chinese Export-Import Bank. The lender highlighted the importance of completing these agreements in stabilising Sri Lanka's financial status and ensuring a long-term economic recovery.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Sri Lanka's economic crisis and recovery<o:p></o:p></h2>

Sri Lanka experienced its greatest financial crisis in over seventy years in 2022, following a significant depletion of its foreign exchange reserves. This resulted in a dollar shortage, driving inflation to reach 70 per cent, a steep 7.3 per cent economic contraction, and the rupee to collapse. The IMF bailout won in March of last year has subsequently brought some stability, with the currency rising by 7 per cent in recent months and inflation falling to 0.9 per cent in May. However, demand remains low, and continuing debt restructuring talks continue to rattle markets.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Key economic indicators show improvement<o:p></o:p></h2>

According to the IMF, Sri Lanka's economy is beginning to revive. Inflation has slowed, income collection is increasing, and foreign reserves are being accumulated. Shehan Semasinghe, Sri Lanka's State Minister of Finance, pointed out&nbsp;the significance of these events, saying on platform X that the approval of the second review demonstrates a continuous commitment to economic recovery and growth, which is critical for maintaining stability and resilience.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Challenges and future risks<o:p></o:p></h2>

Despite these encouraging signs, the IMF cautioned of "important vulnerabilities" that continue to imperil Sri Lanka's economic future. These include issues such as continued debt restructuring, income mobilisation, reserve buildup, and the financial sector's ability to support recovery. The IMF underlined the importance of additional revenue measures to finance the 2025 budget, as well as further tax administration reforms and increased clarity in tax exemption limits.<o:p></o:p>

The lender also expressed concern about potential domestic concerns, including the prospect of "waning reform momentum" if consistent policies are not maintained. With presidential elections slated for before mid-October, opposition parties have suggested that if elected, they may reconsider current government tax policy and IMF program aims.<o:p></o:p>

Eight former SpaceX employees have sued the rocket company and its CEO Elon Musk as they alleged that the latter gave orders for their sacking after they accused the company of tolerating sexual harassment in the workplace.&nbsp;

In 2022, the eight employees were&nbsp;fired after an “open letter” was circulated by them within SpaceX in which they alleged that Musk's “behaviour in the public sphere is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment", according to the lawsuit filed.&nbsp;

In the lawsuit, it was alleged that Musk “runs his company in the dark ages — treating women as sexual objects to be evaluated on their bra size, bombarding the workplace with lewd sexual banter, and offering the reprise to those who challenge the ‘Animal House’ environment that if they don’t like it they can seek employment elsewhere.”&nbsp;

According to the former employees, Musk's social media posts worked as an encouragement for the inappropriate work environment in the spacecraft company.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve chose to keep current interest rates unchanged, implying that any rate decreases may not occur until December. This decision is consistent with the Fed's assessment of an economy that has performed consistently across key parameters in recent years. Fed Chair Jerome Powell stated that the current economic conditions, which are marked by strong growth and low unemployment, do not need quick rate adjustments.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Focus on inflation and the labour market<o:p></o:p></h2>

Powell remarked that the Federal Reserve is content with its present rate policy until there is a dramatic change in economic signals, such as a sharp drop in inflation or an increase in unemployment. "These dynamics can continue for as long as they continue," Powell said at a press conference concluding the two-day policy meeting. He added that inflation had declined without significantly affecting the economy, implying that this trend may continue.<o:p></o:p>

Because of the Fed's conservative approach, inflation is likely to gradually fall to the 2 per cent target. The central bank's preferred inflation measure, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, is expected to remain essentially steady for the rest of the year, with only a quarter-point rate drop planned.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Market reactions and future projections<o:p></o:p></h2>

The market reacted positively, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq Composite indexes closing considerably higher. In reaction, the US currency and Treasury yields plummeted. Investors mostly maintained their forecasts for quarter-point rate cuts in September and December, suggesting confidence in the Fed's strategic posture.<o:p></o:p>

Powell admitted that future rate decreases would be based on thorough data analysis, including inflation patterns, labour market conditions, and overall economic development. "We don't make decisions about future meetings until we get there," he stated, highlighting the Fed's data-driven strategy.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Long-term economic outlook<o:p></o:p></h2>

Despite a weak first quarter, the Fed expects the economy to grow at an above-trend rate of 2.1 per cent this year, with unemployment remaining stable at 4 per cent. The policy statement underlined the persistence of strong employment gains and robust economic activity.<o:p></o:p>

The Federal Reserve also raised its long-term "neutral" rate, which is necessary to keep inflation under control while preserving growth, from 2.6 per cent to 2.8 per cent. This change reflects the Fed's forecast for longer-term inflationary pressures.<o:p></o:p>

Powell pointed out that, while the long-term rate adjustment has no direct impact on short-term rate projections, the Fed is regularly monitoring the restrictiveness of its monetary policy, which has been severely tightened over the previous two years to combat high inflation following the epidemic.<o:p></o:p>

An unusual event took place in our cosmic space in the year 1975. The binary star system HM Sagittae (HM Sge) grew 250 times brighter and captured the attention of astronomers across the world.&nbsp;

A supernova's brightness fades away within months or years, however, the brightness of HM Sge had unusually persisted for decades.

The retired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) and NASA’s&nbsp;Hubble Space Telescope recently observed the enigmatic&nbsp;star system and unveiled the surprising details.

A supernova happens when a gas from its companion is ingested in a white dwarf and causes a sudden increase in brightness.

The gas from the giant star was consumed by the white dwarf in this system. In this process, &nbsp;a hot disk of material was created around the white dwarf.

When the giant star's hydrogen gas accumulates on the surface of the white dwarf, it can reach a critical density and lead to the ignition in a thermonuclear&nbsp;explosion.

Such interactions between the stars give valuable insights into the processes of stellar evolution and the dynamics of binary&nbsp;star systems.

<h2>The 1975 outburst and the transformation&nbsp;</h2>

In 1975, HM Sge’s outburst happened and it transformed from an obscure star to a focal point for astronomers.

“In 1975 HM Sge went from being a nondescript star to something all astronomers in the field were looking at,” emphasised Ravi Sankrit of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI).

The brightness of HM Sge did not diminish rapidly unlike typical novae. For decades, the supernova maintained its luminosity which puzzled scientists.

With the use of the Hubble Telescope and SOFIA, Steven Goldman of STScI, Sankrit as well as the collaborators revisited HM Sge in 2021. The scientists figured that the system had turned hotter but paradoxically dimmer.

According to Hubble's new ultraviolet (UV)&nbsp;data, a strong emission line of highly ionized magnesium was absent in earlier spectra from 1990.

A supernova's brightness fades away within months or years, however, the brightness of HM Sge had unusually persisted for decades. The retired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) and NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope recently observed the enigmatic star system and unveiled the surprising details. After remaining buried and lost for nearly 2,000 years, an ornate "blue room" has now emerged from the ruins of Pompeii in excavation.

Thousands of years have passed since Mount Vesuvius erupted and left Pompeii in ruins, however, new and intriguing things continue to come up from the ancient archaeological site.

According to the Archaeological Parks of Pompeii's press release, the latest finding is an ornate "blue room" which has female figures carved on the cerulean-painted walls.&nbsp;

Speaking to NBC News, site’s director Gabriel Zuchtriegel said that this is a “very unusual thing for Pompeii". He added that blue “was the most expensive colour” because it was difficult to make this colour.&nbsp;

“You had to import it from Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean and beyond. So it was expensive, and if you wanted to have something in blue, you had to pay more. Red, yellow and black were much easier to produce because natural materials like stone and sand were widely available," he said.

The room's size was nearly 90 square feet and it was initially excavated during the Bourbon period (1813-1840) but was recently found and shown for the first time on May 27.

<h2>A shrine, a storage of sacred or a sacrarium?</h2>

The room was found in block No. 10 of Pompeii’s ninth section. This is that part of the town which has not been excavated&nbsp;before after the region was destroyed in the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 A.D.

In a press release, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii stated that the room's walls are decorated with female figures which represent the four seasons along with portrayals of agriculture and sheep farming. &nbsp;

As per the experts, the room's pigment was particularly significant because "the colour blue found in this room rarely occurs in Pompeian frescoes and was generally used for elaborately decorated rooms."

It was understood that the rare blue room was either a&nbsp;sacrarium or a Roman sanctuary "devoted to ritual activities and the storage of sacred objects".

In the room,&nbsp;archaeologists found 15 transport amphorae, or large vases, along with a set of bronze objects consisting of two jugs and two lamps.

Discovery of a 'blue room' in Pompeii has archaeologists scratching their heads

The impossible was made possible by a father and daughter duo when they decoded an 'alien' signal from Mars.

The task which was assigned by various governments to different experts was cracked by the civilians.

The historical task was completed after the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute released an 'alien message'.

&nbsp;The company's project 'A Sign In&nbsp;Space' was a kind of intergalactic piece of 'global theatre'. And the man behind this project was Daniela de Paulis.

"Throughout history, humanity has searched for meaning in powerful and transformative phenomena. Receiving a message from an extraterrestrial civilisation would be a profoundly transformational experience for all humankind," de Paulis was quoted as saying by media outlets.

"A Sign in Space offers the unprecedented opportunity to tangibly rehearse and prepare for this scenario through global collaboration, fostering an open-ended search for meaning across all cultures and disciplines," he added.

An encoded message was sent by the project from the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter back to Earth in May 2023.

More than a year after it was first released, the 'alien message' was finally encrypted.

<h2>What was found in the decoded signal?</h2>

De Paulis was sent the correct solution of the signal by the father and daughter duo on June 7.

The father and daughter investigated the message with the possibility that it was connected with the computation model known as the cellular automaton.
&nbsp;
The pair used the Unity&nbsp;video game&nbsp;engine and placed the 'alien message' through 6,625 transformations to turn the code into something tangible.

The two of them found that the signal was an image of five amino&nbsp;acids, all of which were represented by blocks of various pixels. For example, one block presented hydrogen, six for carbon, seven for nitrogen, and eight for oxygen.

Before the code was solved by the father and daughter duo, the message was taken up by three radio astronomy observatories - the Medicina Radio Astronomical Station Observatory, Italy, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, West Virginia and the SETI Institute’s Allen Telescope Array, California.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, ATA Project Scientist Dr Wael Farah said, “This experiment is an opportunity for the world to learn how the SETI community, in all its diversity, will work together to receive, process, analyse, and understand the meaning of a potential extraterrestrial signal.”

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Samsung introduces one-stop shop for AI chips<o:p></o:p></h2>

Samsung Electronics stated on Wednesday that its contract manufacturing division wants to revolutionise AI chip manufacturing by providing a one-stop shop for customers. This strategy combines Samsung's global leading memory chip, foundry, and chip packaging services to fulfil the growing need for AI technologies.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Accelerated production timeline<o:p></o:p></h2>

By allowing clients to communicate through a single channel that coordinates Samsung's memory chip, foundry, and chip packaging teams, Samsung has cut the time necessary to develop AI chips by around 20 per cent. Typically, AI chip manufacture takes several weeks. "We are truly living in the age of AI - the emergence of generative AI is completely changing the technology landscape," said Siyoung Choi, President and General Manager of Foundry Business, at an event in San Jose, California.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Market growth and industry projections<o:p></o:p></h2>

Samsung expects worldwide semiconductor industry sales to reach $778 billion by 2028, driven primarily by AI chips. Marco Chisari, Executive Vice President of Foundry Sales, and Marketing, shared similar optimism and supported OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's estimates of growing AI chip demand. Altman has reportedly expressed a desire to develop over three dozen new chip plants, highlighting the sector's tremendous expansion.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Strategic advantage and technological innovations<o:p></o:p></h2>

Despite previous customer reservations about Samsung's dual status as a competitor and service provider, the company's integrated strategy is now viewed as a competitive advantage in the age of artificial intelligence. Samsung's comprehensive service package enables high integration of all chip elements, which is critical for efficiently processing huge datasets with low power consumption.<o:p></o:p>

Samsung also demonstrated its advanced gate-all-around (GAA) transistor architecture, which improves chip performance and efficiency. The South Korean corporation, an early adopter of GAA technology, intends to commence mass manufacturing of second-generation 3-nanometer circuits employing GAA in the latter part of this year. Samsung also introduced its latest 2-nanometer chipmaking technology, which enhances power delivery by inserting power rails on the backside of the wafer and is set for mass production in 2027.<o:p></o:p>

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Competitive landscape<o:p></o:p></h2>

Samsung's disclosure comes as other companies, including industry leader TSMC, are developing GAA-based processors. However, Samsung's early adoption of this technology may provide it an advantage in the AI chip industry. Samsung's merger of its many services under one banner could provide them with a substantial advantage in meeting the needs of the developing AI sector.<o:p></o:p>

"We are truly living in the age of AI - the emergence of generative AI is completely changing the technology landscape," said Siyoung Choi, President and General Manager of Foundry Business, at an event in San Jose, California. Market growth and industry projections Samsung expects worldwide semiconductor industry sales to reach $778 billion by 2028, driven primarily by AI chips. Marco Chisari, Executive Vice President of Foundry Sales, and Marketing, shared similar optimism and supported OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's estimates of growing AI chip demand. Altman has reportedly expressed a desire to develop over three dozen new chip plants, highlighting the sector's tremendous expansion. Strategic advantage and technological innovations Despite previous customer reservations about Samsung's dual status as a competitor and service provider, the company's integrated strategy is now viewed as a competitive advantage in the age of artificial intelligence. Samsung's comprehensive service package enables high integration of all chip elements, which is critical for efficiently processing huge datasets with low power consumption. Samsung also introduced its latest 2-nanometer chipmaking technology, which enhances power delivery by inserting power rails on the backside of the wafer and is set for mass production in 2027. Competitive landscape Samsung's disclosure comes as other companies, including industry leader TSMC, are developing GAA-based processors. However, Samsung's early adoption of this technology may provide it an advantage in the AI chip industry. Samsung's merger of its many services under one banner could provide them with a substantial advantage in meeting the needs of the developing AI sector. (With inputs from Agencies)
