The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery discovered the remains of the last known Tasmanian tiger stashed in one of its cupboards, which was believed to be lost for 85 years.

In 1936, the thylacine died at Hobart Zoo’s captivity and the local museum handed over its body. However, the museum then lost track of the thylacine’s remains and it was believed that it has been thrown out.

In new research, it was discovered that the remains were in preserved the museum through the years, but it was not catalogued properly.

Robert Paddle, who had published a book based on the extinction of the species in 2000, said, "For years, many museum curators and researchers searched for its remains without success, as no thylacine material dating from 1936 had been recorded.” "It was assumed its body had been discarded,” he added.

An unpublished report of a taxidermist was found by him along with a museum curator, which prompted a review of collections in the museum.

The missing female specimen was found by them in the education department’s cupboard. Curator Kathryn Medlock said that the specimen was taken around for exhibit but the staff was unaware of the thylacine.

"It was chosen because it was the best skin in the collection. At that time they thought there were still animals out in the bush,” she stated.

The thylacine’s skeleton and skin have now been put on display at the museum in Hobart. It is believed that the Tasmanian tiger were originally found in Australia, but its population declined due to the impact of dingoes and humans.

The Islamic State (IS) on Sunday took responsibility for an attack on the embassy of Pakistan in Kabul, in which the Charge d’Affaires was able to escape safely, however, the guard was injured critically.

The terror group’s Khorasan chapter (ISIS-K), in a statement released in Arabic on social media, said that the ambassador and his guards were attacked by two of its members who were armed with “medium weapons and snipers” in the embassy’s courtyard on Friday. The Foreign Office (FO) stated that the claims made by ISIS-K about the attack on the embassy are being verified by the officials.

“Independently and in consultation with the Afghan authorities, we are verifying the veracity of these reports,” stated the Foreign Office. “This notwithstanding, the terrorist attack is yet another reminder of the threat that terrorism poses to peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region,” it added.

“We must act resolutely with all our collective might to defeat this menace,” it further said. The FO reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to combat terrorism. Two unidentified gunmen had attacked Charge d’Affaires Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani while he was strolling in the compound of the Pakistan embassy. His guard suffered critical injuries in the attack.

The injured guard was lifted by the helicopter and is now receiving treatment in the hospital. Pakistan had summoned Afghanistan’s Charge d’Affaires on Friday and had conveyed to him its concern over the attack on the embassy.

To solve Russia’s issue of homeless animals, the deputy for the Communist Party in Oryol, Viktor Makarov, suggested that homeless dogs can be used as suicide bombers to "blow up tanks" in Ukraine, reported the Orel Times on Friday. The suggestion was given in the Legislative Assembly’s recent session where previously Makarov had suggested that the dogs can be sent to China.

The comments of Makarov caught the attention of Meduza’s managing editor Kevin Rothrock, who on Saturday tweeted, "A Communist deputy in Russia's Oryol region wants to train stray dogs to run at Ukrainian tanks as suicide bombers.”

The regional parliament’s deputy speaker Oleg Koshelev asked what were the chances of people not getting bitten by sterilised dogs. Deputy Andrei Frolov, meanwhile, quizzed about the financial cost of keeping one animal per day. Due to the lack of answers, the regional parliament failed to adopt the proposed law. The United States Army Europe’s former commanding general Mark Hertling took to Twitter on Saturday and criticised the proposed plan of the Russian official.

"Don't know why they see the need to train dogs to do this...they currently are asking RU soldiers to do the same," Hertling said in his tweet.

Around 200 truckers are staying inside the five tents near Seoul and fighting the narrative of the government that they are well-paid "labour aristocracy” as well as bitter cold.

These drivers claim to be aware of the impact of their strike for minimum wage protection at a time when the world is fighting inflation and say that their demand for stronger minimum pay protections is important for them to save themselves from poverty.

"We are not the enemy. We are loyal to our country, because we are contributing to exports. Our money is stretched to eat and live for a month. Labour aristocracy? That is nonsense,” Kim Young-chan, a container truck driver said.

Thousands of truckers in South Korea have been striking for more than 10 days, as negotiators representing the unions and the government are failing to make any progress on disagreements over rules of minimum pay.

As fuel costs continue to soar, more than 25,000 truckers are appealing to the government to establish a permanent minimum-pay system which is also known as the "Safe Freight Rate".

However, the government has clarified that the minimum pay system would not be expanded beyond three years for truckers. The union demands it to be permanent and wider in its scope.

President prepares to widen back-to-work order

On Sunday, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol directed officials to prepare for widening a back-to-work order, extending beyond the cement industry as the truckers' strike continues.

On Tuesday, the president issued a "start work" order, the first of its kind order to be issued in the history of the country, asking the 2,500 protesting drivers to either return to the cement industry or face penalties.

In a statement, spokesperson Lee Jae-myoung said, “On Sunday Yoon called on government ministers to make preparations to issue a return-to-work order on such sectors as oil refining and steelmaking, where additional damage is expected.”

President Yoon said that those who are violating laws while participating in the strike and appealing to ministers to work towards minimising the damage by employing alternative military personnel, drivers and military equipment should be punished.

Union plans a general strike on Tuesday

Meanwhile, a general strike is being planned by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, which is an umbrella group, on Tuesday.

"I cannot but regard this planned strike as a politically motivated action, rather than one aimed at representing the workers' rights," said President Yoon, as quoted by Lee, referring to a harsh reaction from the government.

"Holding the people's living and national economy hostage at this time of economic difficulty makes the survival of weak, unorganised workers harder and deprives future generations and the general public of their future jobs," he added.

The industry ministry stated that the supply chain of South Korea has been disrupted by the strikes and has cost ₩1.6 trillion ($1.2 billion) in the shipments lost in the first seven days of the protest.

As per reports, Amazon is planning to fire 20,000 employees currently working in the company. In the coming months, Amazon will go through a huge layoff and the employees will be fired from their distribution centres located in several regions. The corporate executive and technology staff will also be fired by the company, the DNA reported.

CEO Andy Jassy had earlier hinted about the layoff, however, he had not clearly specified the number of employees to be laid off. The New York Times had, in November, reported that the company was considering laying off employees.

However, a recent report now claims that the number of employees likely to be fired has now increased to 20,000 and that people at all levels are likely to be fired by the company. Recently, Amazon’s CEO announced that they would continue the process of a layoff and that the employees who will be impacted will be informed after everything is assessed by the company.

Those decisions will be shared with impacted employees and organisations early in 2023. We haven’t concluded yet exactly how many other roles will be impacted (we know that there will be reductions in our Stores and PXT organisations), but each leader will communicate to their respective teams when we have the details nailed down. And, as has been the case this week, we will prioritise communicating directly with impacted employees before making broad public or internal announcements,” Andy stated.
