An all-female panel was featured in a show of Afghan broadcaster Tolo News aired on Wednesday from its studio along with a female audience to mark International Women's Day. It was seen as a rare broadcast after Taliban took over the country and many female journalists were forced to quit their profession or work off-air.

According to a survey done by Reporters Without Borders last year, it was discovered that more than 75 per cent of female journalists had quit their jobs after the Taliban took over the government and the foreign forces withdrew from the country in August 2021.

On Wednesday evening, the panel featured three women and one female moderator, who discussed women's position in Islam while covering their faces with surgical masks.

"A woman has rights from an Islamic point of view ... it is her right to be able to work, to be educated," journalist Asma Khogyani said, during the panel discussion.

Last year, the Taliban banned girls from attending high schools and universities and barred Afghan females from working in NGOs.

A panelist and former university professor Zakira Nabil said that women will continue finding ways to work and learn.

"Whether you want it or not, women exist in this society ... if it's not possible to get an education at school, she will learn knowledge at home," she said.

Because of increasing restrictions as well as the severe economic crisis of the country, the International Labour Organisation said that there has been a decline of 25 per cent in female employment last year since mid-2021. It added that more women were opting for self-employed work like tailoring at home.

The United Nations Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Wednesday appealed to the Taliban to remove the restrictions imposed on the rights of women and girls, calling them "distressing."

The Taliban have claimed that they respect the rights of women in accordance with the Islamic law's interpretation and Afghan culture and that a committee has been set up by the authorities to examine perceived issues so as to work towards re-opening schools for girls.

The police in Georgia fired tear gas and water cannon at the thousands of protesters, forcing them to disperse, as they demonstrated on Wednesday against the planned "foreign agent" law which is similar to the Russian legislation which was used to silence critics.

Huge crowds of protesters gathered in front of Georgia's parliament building in Tbilisi, waving EU and Georgian flags, and chanting slogans like "no to the Russian law".

The protesters have been raising their demand that the bill on "transparency of foreign funding” be dropped by the authorities, which according to the critics is similar to the Russian law that forced the dissenting groups and media to shut down.

Protester Elene Ksovreli, aged 16, said that Georgians do not want their future to be threatened.

Thousands of protesters rally against 'foreign agent' bill in Georgia

AC Milan progressed to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2012 as the Italian champions held out for a 0-0 draw at 10-man Tottenham to win 1-0 on aggregate.

A European elimination hot on the heels of an exit from the FA Cup means Tottenham's 15-year wait to win a trophy will extend for at least another season.

Antonio Conte's return to the touchline failed to inspire a response from his side as Tottenham were toothless in attack and had to play the final 12 minutes a man down as Cristian Romero was sent off for two bookable offences.

Kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes after the later arrival of both sides due to traffic congestion, but it took far longer for the contest to get going.

Conte was back in charge after taking more time after the first leg to recover from gallbladder surgery.

The Italian was his usual animated self and was shown a yellow card by referee Clement Turpin for his protestations at a booking for Clement Lenglet.

However, his players lacked the same energy as Spurs failed to rise to the occasion.

Milan produced the one piece of imagination befitting of a Champions League knockout tie before the break as a well-worked free-kick found Junior Messias, but the Brazilian dragged his shot wide.

Spurs had lost four of their previous six games, including defeat to second-tier Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

The home support could not hide their frustration as the half-time whistle was met with a smattering of boos.

Conte was unable to provoke a response at the break as Spurs needed stand-in goalkeeper Fraser Forster to keep them in the tie.

Brahim Diaz scored the only goal of the first leg and his jinking run inside the Spurs box just lacked the finish as Forster's outstretched leg deflected the ball to safety.

Spurs at least forced Mike Maignan into a save 25 minutes from time as he tipped over Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's strike.

Conte gambled by switching to a front four for the final 20 minutes with Richarlison joining Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min up front.

But there was still precious little service for Kane and hope of a Tottenham fightback disappeared with Romero.

Milan hold off toothless Tottenham to reach Champions League quarter-finals

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored against his former club as Bayern Munich ended the Champions League hopes of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, beating the French club 2-0 in their last-16 second leg to reach the quarter-finals.

Choupo-Moting, who featured for PSG in their 1-0 Champions League final loss to Bayern in Lisbon in 2020, sidefooted the ball home after Thomas Mueller dispossessed Marco Verratti inside his own penalty area.

Substitute Serge Gnabry scored in the last minute of regular time to wrap a 3-0 aggregate victory for the six-time European champions.

Bayern reached the last eight for the fourth straight year, while PSG will need to wait at least another season to lift the coveted trophy for the first time.

The best chance of a tight opening half fell to PSG's Vitinha, who won the ball when Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer attempted to dribble out of a busy penalty area.

Vitinha was presented with an empty goal, but his rolled effort allowed Matthijs de Ligt to clear the ball off the line.

Bayern roared out of the blocks after half-time, but PSG were let off by the clumsy feet of Choupo-Moting, who tripped before shooting and then stood in the way of a goal-bound effort from Joshua Kimmich.

The Cameroon striker looked to have redeemed himself in the 52nd minute, but his header from a curling Jamal Musiala cross was chalked off for offside against Mueller.

Bayern continued to push and PSG's dam broke on 61 minutes, with Choupo-Moting doing the damage. Mueller robbed the ungainly Verratti in the box, clipped the ball to Leon Goretzka, who squared for Choupo-Moting to double his side's two-legged advantage.

PSG centre-back Sergio Ramos had a chance to equalise just two minutes later, but his powerful header was brilliantly palmed away by Sommer.

Gnabry put the result beyond doubt, racing onto Joao Cancelo's pass before firing into the far corner left-footed. Sadio Mane looked to have scored a third for the home side in injury time, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

United States President Joe Biden on Wednesday said that Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for supporting Fox News' attempt to play down the seriousness of the Capitol attack that took place on January 6, 2021, after a mob of Donald Trump's supporters gathered outside the Congress.

"More than 140 officers were injured on Jan 6. I've said before: How dare anyone diminish or deny the hell they went through?" tweeted Biden. "I hope House Republicans feel ashamed for what was done to undermine our law enforcement,” he said.

Biden extended his support to the Capitol Hill police, whose chief has claimed that Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson manipulated the video footage of the Capitol attack after Trump faced defeat in the elections.

Biden slams Republicans for playing down Jan 6 Capitol attack

For almost 45 years, US authorities remained unaware of the name or life of the woman they found shot dead on the left side of a logging road in Massachusetts.

But now, advanced genetic testing has helped them solve the mystery. They recently found out that the victim was Patricia Ann Tucker, who was aged 28 and was a mother to a five-year-old son when she was murdered, without her family having any knowledge of the tragedy for decades.

The office of the district attorney in Massachusetts announced that the investigators had found out that the murder victim was Tucker, who was known to many as the “Granby girl”, a nickname given to her based on the area where her dead body was found.

As per the police information, the assailant shot Tucker in the temple after which she was dragged by her neck before her decomposed body, buried under a stump and leaves, was found by loggers on November 15, 1978.

Later, her body was buried in a grave marked “unknown”. Matthew Dale, Tucker’s son who is now 50 years old, said he spent his childhood in North Carolina without being sure about the reason for his mother's disappearance.

Dale's assumption, about his mother being dead, started getting confirmed about two years ago. The local authorities were helped by the forensic laboratory in acquiring the Granby girl’s DNA profile, which led them eventually to a relative in Maryland, said a prosecutor with the north-western Massachusetts district attorney’s office.

The investigators were connected with Dale through that relative. Dale said that he handed a file with his digital DNA profile to the investigators, and in hours, he got a call from them, informing there was a clear genetic match between his DNA and the Granby girl, who they finally concluded was his mother.

ALSO READ | ‘Lady in the fridge’ case: Victim identified using DNA sample 27 years after body’s discovery As per the police information, the assailant shot Tucker in the temple after which she was dragged by her neck before her decomposed body, buried under a stump and leaves, was found by loggers on November 15, 1978. Later, her body was buried in a grave marked “unknown”. Matthew Dale, Tucker’s son who is now 50 years old, said he spent his childhood in North Carolina without being sure about the reason for his mother's disappearance. He added that, in his 30s, he had believed that she was dead, and hence, he had submitted his DNA to a database, if the authorities ever find her. Massachusetts ‘Granby girl’ identified, 45 years after she was killed

The ruling Law & Justice party of Poland came under fire over the death of opposition MP’s 15-year-old son Mikolaj Filiks, who committed suicide after a state-run radio station, in its report, identified him as a victim of a paedophile.

Poland's parliament, Sejm, observed silence for a minute on Tuesday on the demise of the MP's son. Filiks' mother, Magdalena Filiks, who is an MP from Civic Platform, which is Poland's main opposition party, last week said that he had died in February.

The teenager ended his life weeks after the state-run broadcaster Polskie Radio network, in its report on a convicted paedophile by Radio Szczecin, revealed the victim's details that made it possible for Filiks to be easily identified to the public.

In the report aired in December, the ages of minors were disclosed by the radio and it was said that one of them was the child of a local man. The report further stated that the convicted man — whose trial was held by the court in private in 2021 to protect his victims — was a former member of Civic Platform, an LGBT activist and an election candidate.

The report, which other state media widely relayed, led to a major uproar in Poland, as the supporters of the opposition party alleged that it was orchestrated by the national-conservative Law & Justice (PiS) party for political gain and hence, the party is partly responsible for the child's death.

PiS, which will be fighting a tough election later this year, tightly controls Poland's media and has led campaigns against the rights of the LGBT community. In turn, the ruling party's supporters have claimed that Civic Platform deliberately covered the original abuse conviction.

Leader of Civic Platform, former Polish prime minister and European Council president, Donald Tusk tweeted his vow to “hold PiS to account for every villainy, for all human harm and tragedies they have caused while in power”.

Former cabinet minister and Polish MEP Radosław Sikorski said the case displayed the kind of co-operation between prosecutors and the PiS-run media and stated that such operations were “planned … and routinely used to destroy political competitors”.

Opposition party Poland 2050's leader Szymon Hołownia said there were “no words today that could bring solace”. “However, there will come – let no one doubt it – a time of reckoning for those whose words bring death,” he added.

Poland’s ruling party faces heat after opposition MP’s son commits suicide

It is the kind of K-drama that rivets millions of viewers — bitter boardroom battles, expensive lawyers, hostile takeover claims and high-stakes shareholder meetings.

Except this is playing out in real life as the godfather of K-pop fights his nephew for control of the music company he founded.

It features HYBE, the agency behind the smash-hit group BTS, and tech giant Kakao in an A-list battle that could also determine the billion-dollar industry's future.

And it was triggered largely by one man: South Korean activist investor Lee Chang-hwan.

Lee's fund Align Partners bought a one per cent stake early last year in SM Entertainment, one of South Korea's leading music companies that helped bring K-pop to the world, managing early hit groups such as boy bands Super Junior and SHINee.

He used that stake to argue for corporate reform, saying that SM founder Lee Soo-man — the so-called Godfather of K-pop — was, in effect, syphoning off millions of dollars every year in bogus consulting fees.

"It didn't make sense," Lee Chang-hwan told AFP in a recent interview, saying the money — six per cent of publicly listed SM Entertainment's sales every year — was paid to a private entity called Like Planning, which was entirely owned and controlled by Lee Soo-man.

The 36-year-old self-made investor, who was raised by a single mother and first shot to public attention by winning a popular South Korean TV quiz show, started asking uncomfortable questions.

Lee Soo-man's pet company had raked in "nearly 160 billion won ($120 million) over the past 20 years", he said, as SM risked major financial and reputational damage due to the behaviour of its founder.

Creating K-pop

Lee Soo-man not only created individual K-pop bands in the 1990s such as H.O.T. and S.E.S., whose success arguably laid the groundwork for the stratospheric rise of groups like BTS and BLACKPINK, he came up with the industry's whole modus operandi.

He pioneered an obsessive level of training and micro-management of "idols" — trained K-pop stars — and his idea of combining strong visual performances and aggressive overseas marketing helped make SM Entertainment an industry behemoth.

He founded the company in 1989 and took it public in 2000 — so he was predictably outraged last year when SM Entertainment's management, including his nephew, agreed with activist investor Lee Chang-hwan's assessment and moved to terminate the "unfair" deal with Like Planning.

In an apparent fit of revenge, Lee Soo-man sold the majority of his stake in SM — 14.8 per cent of the company — to one-time rival HYBE, the agency that manages BTS, for $325 million.

The move made HYBE the single largest shareholder in SM Entertainment, prompting outraged protests from SM's management that it was a hostile takeover that would create an HYBE monopoly and damage the K-pop industry's massive potential.

In a bid to wrest back control, SM's management brought in South Korea's Kakao, a sprawling cash-rich tech conglomerate that owns the country's most popular messaging app. Kakao is now seeking to buy a controlling share of the company to block HYBE.

'Valley of death'

The feud has unleashed a family succession drama, with founder Lee's nephew, Lee Sung-su, who is the company's CEO, taking to YouTube to air their dirty laundry.

Accusing his uncle of tax fraud using overseas companies, he demanded the elder Lee "kneel down and apologise" for his alleged crimes.

"Sir, please stop now... It is the only way to save you from the Valley of Death", he said in a video posted online.

Lee Soo-man has not responded to his nephew's allegations, and could not be reached for comment by AFP, but Yonhap reported he has said Lee Sung-su is a "good nephew" and that his "heart aches" due to the feud.

Experts say the drama is an illustration of a perennial problem in South Korea's dynastic chaebols: founding families exerting control through a complex web of crossholdings, allowing them to wield unchecked power despite not holding controlling shares.

The chairman of South Korean giant Samsung Electronics, who was also the heir of the founding family, was convicted and jailed in 2017 over corruption, although he was given a presidential pardon last year.

Align Partners' Lee Chang-hwan says the SM Entertainment case is similar.

"It was a bad example of a person who runs the company as if it's his private entity... Whether it was legal or not, it is hard to accept as a shareholder," he said.

Lee Chang-hwan also opposes HYBE's bid for control, saying their efforts to create a monopoly bode ill for the market.

"We thought there was great potential for further K-pop growth," he said, adding he first started looking at investing in the industry in early 2021.

"BTS was already a huge success and we witnessed the formation of a real K-pop fan base in North America and Europe," Lee Chang-hwan said. SM Entertainment was "undervalued" due to its management woes, he said, and seemed a good target.
