A new research has claimed that dogs can be made to sniff out an oncoming flashback which is a result of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Such dogs have been trained by scientists to recognise the scent present in people's breath which reflects their past traumatic experiences, claimed the study whose findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Allergy.

The scientists said that the findings can be used to make PTSD assistance dogs more effective.

PTSD is a mental health issue which can be triggered by frightening, distressing or stressful events and those who have gone through those moments are generally haunted by flashbacks and nightmares.

While speaking to The Independent, Laura Kiiroja, who is part of the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University in Canada, said: “PTSD service dogs are already trained to assist people during episodes of distress. However, dogs are currently trained to respond to behavioural and physical cues. Our study showed that at least some dogs can also detect these episodes via breath.”

The researchers stated that all humans have a “scent profile”. This profile is made up of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are released from the body in different secretions such as sweat.

They added that there is some evidence that hints at dogs being capable of detecting VOCs related to human stress.

How the experiment was done?

To carry out the study, a team of 26 people were collected and more than half of them met the diagnostic requirements for PTSD.

The people were directed to breathe into a facemask and at the same time recall their past traumatic events. Twenty five dogs were recruited by the team to train in scent detection, however, only two dogs (Ivy and Callie) appeared skilled and motivated throughout the experiments, said the researchers.

“Both Ivy and Callie found this work inherently motivating. Their limitless appetite for delicious treats was also an asset. In fact, it was much harder to convince them to take a break than to commence work. Callie in particular made sure there was no dilly-dallying," Kiiroja said.

In that experiment, Ivy was 74 per cent accurate and Callie's performance was 81 per cent on spot, as per the team.
Taking the ongoing research on the Martian land to the next level, scientists have not spotted a massive and oddly shaped volcano - which is bigger than Mount Everest - on the surface of the planet.

The volcano is said to have been hiding for decades in plain sight. On March 13, lead author of the research and Mars Institute Chairman Dr Pascal Lee announced the new volcano spotted on Mars at the 55th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas, which sent waves across the planetary sciences community.

The volcano identified by Lee and Sourabh Shubham, who is a doctoral student of geology at the University of Maryland, is located in the Noctis Labyrinthus region of Mars. This is terrain close to the equator and has a web of canyons.

For years, scientists have failed to see the volcano in the “Labyrinth of Night” despite multiple satellite observations since it does not tower over the landscape which surrounds it, said Lee.

“It’s also deeply eroded, eaten up and collapsed by erosion to the point that unless you’re really looking for a volcano, you would be really hard-pressed to spot it very quickly,” he said while speaking to CNN.

If the spotting of the volcano is correct, the new finding can have major implications for Martian geology's understanding.

Scientist hopes hidden volcano may help find water ice, life

Lee said that he is hopeful the discovery of the volcano will help future exploratory missions in searching for signs of water ice or life.

The efforts of the research team initially led to a study which was presented in March 2023 and stated that the Noctis Labyrinthus region is filled with massive glaciers which are covered in salt deposits.

After that, Lee and Shubham investigated the data collected by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and tried to find whether water might still be frozen under the salt.

The find for water ice is important since this can be used to sustain human exploration on Mars and also convert it into rocket fuel.

Lee, while studying the landscape, said that he was struck by “this little lava flow next to the glacier.”

"The lava hadn’t yet been fully oxidised, a process that would turn it the same muddy orange hue as the surrounding surface," said Lee, as reported by CNN.

This hinted that the lava is likely to be fresh which was the first hint that an undetected volcano is lurking nearby.

“We started looking at the landscape carefully. And sure enough, when we examined the high points of this region, we noticed that they formed an arc," said Lee.
If the spotting of the volcano is correct, the new finding can have major implications for Martian geology's understanding. Scientist hopes hidden volcano may help find water ice, life Lee said that he is hopeful the discovery of the volcano will help future exploratory missions in searching for signs of water ice or life. Watch: Planet warming at an accelerating rate The find for water ice is important since this can be used to sustain human exploration on Mars and also convert it into rocket fuel. Lee, while studying the landscape, said that he was struck by “this little lava flow next to the glacier.” "The lava hadn’t yet been fully oxidised, a process that would turn it the same muddy orange hue as the surrounding surface," said Lee, as reported by CNN. This hinted that the lava is likely to be fresh which was the first hint that an undetected volcano is lurking nearby. “We started looking at the landscape carefully. And sure enough, when we examined the high points of this region, we noticed that they formed an arc," said Lee. (With inputs from agencies)

In a not-so-anticipated moment, Guyanese President Irfan Ali went all out questioning the "Western hypocrisy" when a journalist tried to place him on edge on the issue of carbon emissions.

President Ali's interview with BBC journalist Stephen Sackur went viral in which he was questioned about the carbon emission rates of Guyana as it planned to extract gas and oil along its coast.

In the viral video clip, the Guyanese president was seen interrupting the journalist's question and asking him if he had the "right to lecture him on climate change" and if he was in the "pockets of those who destroy the environment through the industrial revolution and are now lecturing us".

Countering the query of the journalist that the extraction of oil and gas in Guyana will result in more than two billion metric tonnes of carbon emissions from its coast, President Ali said, "Do you know that Guyana has a forest forever that is the size of England and Scotland combined? A forest that stores 19.5 Gigatons of carbon, a forest that we have kept alive."
